PREFACE.The game of ]Draughts has b^en held to have preceded Chess, of

which it is supposed to be the root or source. We have no authoritative record that Draughts was much practisedin Europe till the middle of the sixteenth century. The Introduction to the Game of Draughts (London, 1756) by

Mr. William Payne, a teacher of mathematics, is the book on whichour modern play is founded. In 1767 appeared "A Companion forthe Draught-Player," by W. Painter, which is really an abbreviatedcopy of Payne's work. So also are the different editions of Hoyle.Until 1800 no other work on the game was issued by English writ-ers, but in that year Joshua Sturges published his well known andmost able work, "The Guide to the Game of Draughts."

    J. Sinclair (Glasgow, 1832) was the next to issue a treatise on thegame, and was the first of the Scottish school of writers. Then fol-lowed John Drummond's first edition (Falkirk, 1838) and W. Hay(Stirling, 1838).

In 1848 Mr. Anderson published at Lanark his first work, followedin 1852 by his celebrated "Second Edition."

Since then different authors have published books, and in 1855the New York Clippe?- set the example, now followed by newspapersin all parts of the world, of giving a weekly column devoted to thegame.

In 1878, Mr Robert McCulloch, of Glasgow, issued a revised edi-tion of" Anderson's Second," but overlooked many well known errors, and credited other corrections he did give, to persons who had noright to their authorship.'On this account, I have been induced to prepare this work, which

I hope will be found to have omitted very few known errors in An-derson's play and also be the first to present others to the public.

1 PREFACEBy his systematic arrangement of play, under distinct openings,

Anderson did much to simplify the scientific study of the game.McCulloch further aids, by introducing the small dash (-) placed atthe Black moves, to distinguish the moves of Black from White. Tothis I have also added the plan introduced by R. E. Bowen in hisbook on the "Cross," to drop those variations where white moves first, one line from the top, and still further to facilitate the working out ofthe games, numbers are given at the b^^ttoms of the columns to in-dicate the variations from which they branch. There are many variations in Anderson which present useful points

of play, but have been cut out by later corrections ; when I have notbeen able to preserve these in the body of the games by reversingthe order of a few moves, I have added them at the ends of their re-spective openings, indicating the places where they vary from thebody of the book by the signs *, f , J, &c.Having often been asked the question, I will here say with Payne

that " there is indeed one Secret boasted in the World which I cannotteach. Some Men pretend to an infallible Method, by which he thatmoves first shall win the Game; but no such Hero has it ever been myfortune to encounter, and no such do I expect to find. Nor can itbe proved that the first Mover, has any considerable Advantage overa Person equally skilful with himself."

INSTRUCTIONS.The game is played on a board of sixty-four squares of alternate

colors, and with twenty-four pieces, called men, of adverse colors. Itis played by two persons ; the one having the twelve Black or Redpieces is technically said to be playing the first side, and the otherhaving the twelve White to be playing the second side. The finalobject of each player maybe thus briefly stated : The one endeavorsto confine the pieces of the other in situations where they cannot beplayed, or both to capture and fix so that none can be played j the personwhose side is brought to this state loses the game.

The following shows -THE DRAUGHT BOARD NUMBERED.

The men being placed as shown in the frontispiece, the game isbegun by each player moving alternately one of his' men along thediagonal on which they are situated. The men can only move for-ward, either to right or left, one square at a time, unless they haveattained one of the four squares on the extreme line of the board(technically termed the " crown-head "), on which they becomekings, and can move either forward or backward. The pieces takein the direction they move, by leaping over any opposing man thatmay be immediately contiguous, provided there be a vacant squarebehind it. If several men should be exposed by having open spacesbehind them alternately, they may be all taken at one capture, andthe capturing piece is then placed on the square beyond the last man.To explain the mode of capturing by a practical illustration, letus begin by placing the men as for a game. You will perceive thatBlack, who always plays first, can only move one of the men placedon 9, 10, II, or 12 ; supposing him then to play the man from n to15, and White answering this by playing from 22 to 18, Black cantake the White man on 18 by leaping from" 15 to 22,, and removing.

INSTRUCTIONS.the captured piece from the board. Should Black not take the manon 1 8, but make another movesay 12 to 16, for instancehe is lia-ble to be

" huffed ;" that is, White may remove the man (that on 15)with which Black should have taken, off the board for not taking.(See the i6th and 17th Laws.) When one party " huffs " the otherin preference to compelling the take, he does not replace the piecehis opponent moved, but simply removes the man huffed from theboard, and then plays his own move.

It has already been stated that when a man reaches one of thesquares on the extreme line of the board he is crowned, and becomesa king ; but there is another point relative to this which it is neces-sary to explain. The man on thus reaching the crown-head finishesthe move on being made a king, and cannot take any piece which maythen be liable to capture. To exemplify this, take the followingposition as an illustration :

    BLACK.

WHITE.Black having to play takes the man on 26, by leaping from 22 to 31and demands that his man should be crowned; but he cannot take the

X INSTRUCTIONS.man on 27 at the same move, which he could do were his piece a kingwhen it made the first capture. White, of course, will play 32 to 28,and recover the man lost. One of the great objects of the game, evenat its very commencement, is to push on for a king. But it is unne-cessary to dwell longer on the elementary part of the science, as play-ing through one of the games will do more in the way of teaching therudiments of Draughts than the most elaborate theoretical explana-tion. In studying the games, you should have a representation ofthe numbered diagram on a small card ; it is much preferable to fix-ing the numbers on the squares ; and a little practice in this way willshortly enable you to dispense altogether with the card. You should at first learn one or two variations for each side ofevery game in this work, and try to keep your opponent in those youhave examined ; but the moment he leaves off these, exercise yourown judgment, not your memory. Remember there ought to be amotive for every move ; the perpetually recurring question shouldtherefore be, What will be the result of this one, that one, etc. ? Ap-ply this important question at every stage of the game; answer it bycalculating the result of every plausible move at the point in ques-tion. After a few weeks' perseverance in this discipline, you will, ifpossessed of tolerable memory, find your skill greatly improved. Here we may remark that when you are learning the j^rsf side of anyof the games you should keep the Black men next you; but whenyou are studying the seco?id side, you will find it beneficial to turnthe White men next you.

In the Games in this work, the left side numbers indicate thesquares you ^\z.j fro77i ; those on the right, those you play to j thus,11-15 signifies "Play from 11 to 15." The moves of Black aredistinguished by the small dash between the figures. The' Variationsare numbered in natural succession in a line with the word " Game,"at the top of the page ; and the indicators that refer to them followeach other in succession down along the columns. Thus, i leads toVariation i ; 2 leads to Var. 2, and so on with the rest. The Bracehas its central point /^i the move at which the variations occur; seepage 2 at 6th move of Game (or " trunk," as it is technically called),where it points to 23 19, showing that Vars. 2 and 3 take place atthat point.

General Advice. As to general advice relative to rules or systems for draught-

playing, little or nothing could be learned from a volume of such in-struction. The various standard modes of opening will be seen byreference to the accompanying games. According to Sturges, amongthe few general rules that can be given, you should bear in mind thatit is generally better to keep your men in the middle of the boardthan to play them to the side squares ; as, in the latter case, one-halfof their power is curtailed. When you have once gained an advan-tage in the number of your pieces you increase the proportion byexchanges ; but in forcing them you must take care not to damageyour position. Accustom yourself to play slow at first, and, if a be-ginner, prefer playing with those who will allow an unconditionaltime for the consideration of a difficult position, instead of thosewho riQidly exact the observance of the strict law. Never touch aman without moving it, and do not permit the loss of a few games toruffle your temper, but rather let continued defeat act as an incen-tive to greater efforts both of study and practice. When one playeris decidedly stronger than another, he should give odds to make thegame equally interesting to both parties. There must be a greatdisparity indeed, if he can give a man, but it is very common to giveone man in a rubber of three gamesthat is, in one of the threegames, the superior player engages to play with only 1 1 men instead of12. Another description of odds consists in giving the drawn gamesthat is, the superior player allows the weaker to reckon as won allgames he may draw. Never play with a better player without offer-ing to take such odds as he may choose to give. If you find your-self, on the other hand, so superior to your adversary that you feelno amusement in playing even, offer him odds ; and should he re-fuse, cease playing with him. Follow the rules of the game most rig-orously, and compel your antagonist to do the same ; without which, the game ot Draughts would degenerate to mere child's play. Ifyou wish to improve, play with better players in preference to such asyou can beat ; and take every opportunity of looking on when fineplayers are engaged. Never touch the squares of the Board withyour finger ; and accustom yourself to play your move off-handwhen you have once made up your mind, without hovering with yourfingers over the Board. While you play, do not fall into the vulgar

    22/327

XII INSTRUCTIONS.1 abit of incessantly chattering nonsense ; and show no impatienceat your adversary should he be a little slow. Finally, bear in mindwhat may well be termed the three golden rules to be observed inplaying games of calculation :Firstly, to avoid all boasting andloud talking about your skill ; secondly, to lose with good temper ;and thirdly, to win with silence and modesty.

In conclusion, we would strongly advise the student to study andmaster the theory and practice of the play embraced in the " First,"'' Second," "Third," and " Fourth " Positions. These endings, indifferent forms, are of very frequent occurrence, and ought to bethoroughly understood.

NAMES OF THE OPENINGSAND HOW FORMED.

All authors prior to the publication of "Anderson's Second" setdown their games without any regular order, or attempt to indicatethe best lines of play to the student, but in his Second edition An-derson arranged his games under their proper openings, well saying," A certain opening undoubtedly constitutes a game, and all the sub-sequent varieties of play to which the opening leads, are merely vari-ations of that game."

In this book, play is given on the following openings. Some ofthese had been known to most Scottish players by name prior to thepublication of Anderson's books, but a brief account of their forma-tion may be generally interesting.

    1. The "Ayrshire Lassie," counting the play on both sides, isformed by the first three moves:11-15, 24 20, 8-1

    2. The "Bristol" is termed by the first three moves:11-16,24 20, 16-19.

    3. The "Center " is formed by the first five moves :11-15, 23 19,8-11, 22 17, 15-18. So called because both play at the center oftheboard.

    4. The "Cross " is formed by the first two moves: 11-15, 23 18.It is so named because the second move is played across the direc-tion of the first.

    NAMES OF THE OPENINGS.

    5. The "Defiance" is formed by the first four moves: 11-15,23 19, 9-14, 27 23. It is so named because it defies or prevents theformation of the " Fife."

    6. " Denny " is formed by the first move: 10-14. So called byDrummond.

    7. " Double Corner," is so named from its first move, 9-14, be-ing from the one double corner toward the other.

    8. " Dundee " is formed by the first move : i-x6. So called byDrummond.9. "Dyke" is formed by the first three moves: 11-15, 22 17,

15-19. The name has probably arisen from the observed resemblanceof many ofthe positions in this game to a " Dyke " (/. ^., a fence or astone wall), for at various stages the pieces are formed into straightlines.

    10. " Edinburgh " is formed by the first move: 9-13. So namedby Janvier.

    11. " Fife " is formed by the first five moves : 11-15, 23 19, 9-14,22 17,5-9. It has been so called since 1847, when Wyllie, hailingfrom Fifeshire, played it against Anderson.

    12. The "Glasgow" is formed by the first five moves: 11-15,23 19, 8-1 r, 22 17, 11-16, It has generally been known by thisname since Sinclair, of Glasgow, played it against Anderson at theirmatcli in Hamilton, in 1828.

    13. The " Kelso " is formed by the first move: 10-15. So calledby Drummond.

    14. "Laird and Lady, " is formed by the first five moves : 11-T5,23 19, 8-11, 22 17, 9-13. It was so called from being the favorite

of Laird and Lady Gather, who resided in Cambusnethan, Lan-arkshire. A more appropriate name is the " Mixed," as named byDrummond, because the men are often played behind those of the ad-versary.

    15. " Maid of the Mill " is formed by the first five moves: 11-15,22 17, 8-11, 17 13, 15-18. It is so named in compliment to a mill-er's daughter in Lanarkshire, who was an excellent player, and par-tial to this opening.

    16. "The Old Fourteenth " is formed by the first five moves:11-15, 23 19, 8-11, 22 17, 4-8. It was so named through beingfamiliar to players as the 14th game in Sturges's original work;

    17. The " Paisley " is formed by the first two moves: 11-16,24 19. So called by Janvier.

    18. The "Second Double Corner" is formed by the first twomoves: 11-15, 24 19. Like the "Double Corner," it is so namedbecause the first move of the second player is from the one doublecorner toward the other.

    19. The "Single Corner," is formed by the first twio moves:11-15, 22 18. It is so named from the fact of these moves beingplayed from one single corner toward the other.

    20. The " Souter " is formed by the first five moves : 11-15,2319,9-14, 22 17, 6-9. The game has been known by this name amongplayers in Scotland for many years, and was so named owing to itsbeing the favorite of an old Paisley shoemaker {Scoitice, Souter).

    21. The " Switcher" is formed by the first two moves: ii-i521 17, It is so called because Wyllie has used it so often to switchor beat players who had never examined it.

    22. The "Whilter" is formed by the first five moves: 11-15,

23 19,9-14, 22 17, 7-1 1. "Whilter" or "Wholter, " (in Scotch) sig-nitying an overturning or a change productive of confusion, is remark-ably applicable to many of the unexpected changes which occur i\\this game.

    23. The "Will of the Wisp " is formed by the first three moves :ii-i^^ 23 19,0-13. It was so named by Mr. George Wallace, ofGlaso^ow, from the peculiarity of some of the variations, where theplayer finds to his loss, that he has been pursuing an ignisfahms.

We need scarcely remark that the games formed by an odd num-ber of moves refer to the first side, while those formed by an evennumber refer to the second. For instance, if one says that he playedthe " Ayrshire Lassie," " Defiance," "Cross," or " Single Corner," we atonce understand that he played the second ^\Aq. of the games, while ifhe says he played the " Fife " or " Souter," he played the _/?rj-/ side.

    4. The Men shall be placed on the Black squares. (In Englandand this country they are often placed for play on the white squaresby agreement ; and because the Diagrams showing positions, etc., areusually made by type, the pieces and figures are placed on Whitesquares in all Checker books.)

Placing the Men.5. The Black men shall invariably be placed upon the real or sup-

posed first twelve squares of the board ; the White upon the lasttwelve squares.

THE THEORY OF THE MOVEAND ITS CHANGESPRACTICALLY EXPLAINED AND ILLUSTRATED.

When the men are so situated that, in the ordinary course of theplay, you can force your opponent's pieces into a confined position, you have what is technically termed "the Move." "The Move' inmany positions wins the game, in others it enables a draw to besecured, while in some instances, from the peculiarity of the situation, the player having the move loses the game. Hence the importanceof the knowledge which enables one to judge whether or not he shouldseek to gain " the Move."

THE MOVE.To have the move, signifies the occupying of that position on the

board, which (in playing piece against piece, without regard to theothers, till one square intervene between the pieces in each pair) willeventually cause the player who occupies that position to have the lastplay.

CALCULATION OF THE MOVE.For convenience, the squares of the board are divided into two

systems of four columns each. The columns of one system are thosereckoned upward from Black's crown-head, that is, from the squaresnumbered i, 2, 3, 4. The columns of the other system are those reck-oned downward from White's crown-head, that is, from the squaresnumbered 29, 30, 31, 32.

    Reckoning upward, the squares i, g, 17, 25 ; 2, 10, 18, 26; 3, 11,19, 27 ; 4, 12, 20, 28, form the columns of one system, and reckoningdownward, squares 29, 21, 13, 5 ; 30, 22, 14, 6; 31, 23, 15, 7 ; 32, 24,16, 8, form the columns ofthe other system. The following may more

    16^ 18^ 17

^ ir^ 10^ 9 ^2The columns of each system being situated alternately between

those of the other, it is evident that one system is the reverse of theother.

When the two players have an equal number of pieces it is obviousthat the total number of pieces must always be even.

Now, as an even number can only be divided into two even or twoodd numbers, it is clear that if the pieces be counted in each of thetwo systercs separately, the numbers will in the two cases be botheven or both odd.

In the course of the play each move will be out of one system intothe other, and will therefore make one system count one more, and theother one less ; so that if both systems were before odd, they will nowbe both even, and after another move they will again be both odd, andso on alternately, according to the player whose turn it is to play.

THEORY OF THE MOVE.To know ifyoil have the move when it is your turn to play,

    apply the following rules :

Rule I.Add together all the pieces, both Black and White, ineither system of squares, and if their sinn is odd you have the move :but if even, your opponent has the move.

As an illustration, take the following position :

You play Black, and have the move, because either system con-tains an odd number of pieces; one contains one, the other three.(To aid the beginner in mastering the idea of the two systems intowhich the board is divided, we have distinguished the one systemfrom the other by a series of dots.)

abreviation of the rule.Add together all the single pieces d^w^L all the single vacant squares

on the rows of either system, and if thpir sum is odd, you have themove ; but if even, you have not.Let it be observed that you will find the single pieces only on such

rows of the set as contain one piece, and \\\q single vacant squares oxAy

    34/327

THEORY OF THE MOVE.on such as contain three pieces. You omit all rows of the setwhich contain two or four pieces, because an even number does notaffect the result. In using this shortened form of the rule, you willnever count more than one on any given row : and three will bethe greatest number in the whole set when you have the move, andFOUR when you have not.

To have the move is often an advantage, though to have it in somecases may occasion the loss of the game.

As an illustration, take the following position

You play White first, and have the move, but lose the game, through black forcing your man on 9 into 5, a confined position. TheBlack king has then the move on your king, though you have themove if all the pieces are counted.

An exchange usually alters the move ; consequently, when youwish to obtain the move, make such an exchange as will alter it.

Take the following position as an illustration : Place Black menon 13 and 17, and White men on 26 and 30. You play Black and

THEORY OF THE MOVE.have not the move ; but play 17-22, white takes 26 17, you retake by13-22, and regain the move.

In every single exchange of one for one, when only one of thecapturing pieces remains on the board, the move is changed.

To find what kind of exchanges do or do not change the move, apply the following rules :Rule II.When the sum of the capturing pieces is even and in

reverse systems, and the captured pieces are odd on each side, themove is changed ; but if the capturing pieces are in the same system, the move is not changed.*

Place the following as an illustration : Black man on 11 and Kingon 26; White man on 22 and king on 7. You play White first andhave not the move : take 7 16, Black takes 26-17, and you gain themove, because the capturing piece on 7 is in reverse system to thecapturing piece on 26. Place also the following : Black man on 15and king on 26 ; White man on 22 and king on 10. You play Whitefirst and have not the move. Take 10 19, and black 'cakes 26-17,and this exchange does not change the move, because the capturingpiece on 10 is in the same system as the capturing piece on 26.

Rule III.When the sum of the capturing pieces is even and thecaptured pieces are even on each side, the move is not changed.

Rule IV.^When the sum of the capturing pieces is odd and thecaptured pieces are even in each system, the move is changed ; butif the captured pieces are odd the move is not changed.,

As a summary of the illustrations of the exchanges which do or donot change the move, the following will be found of universal appli-cation in the most complex positions :

Rule V.Add together all of the capturing pieces in both sys-tems, and if they are the same as the captured pieces in each system(that is, both odd or both even) the move is not changed; but if theyare reverse to each other (one odd and the other even), the move ischanged.

XXVI THEORY OF THE MOVE.A very full and scientific exposition of the Theory of the Move

was published by John Paterson in the Second Edition, but as manyplayers complained that it was too abstruse and complex for themto understand, he prepared the foregoing for Henry Spayth's Amer-ican Draught Player. In the " Game of Draughts " Mr. Spaythgives the following concise rule, credited to Alonzo Brooks, ofBuffalo. I have always found it suflficient for practical purposes, and use no other :

CALCULATION OF THE MOVE.For this purpose the squares of the board are divided into two

systems of four columns each. The columns of one system being those numbered upwards fromsquares i, 2, 3, 4.The columns of the other system being those numbered down-wards from squares 29, 30, 31, 32.

RULE.Add together all the pieces in either system, and if their sum is

odd, it being your play, you have the move. If even, your opponenthas the move. THE CHANGES OF THE MOVE.

RULE.Add together all of the capturing pieces in both systems, and if

they are the same as the captured pieces in each system (that isboth odd or both even), the move is not changed ; but if they arereverse to each other (one odd and the other even) the move ischanged.

Mr. William R. Bethell, of Philadelphia, also suggests that whenone side has a man superiority over the other, he has in practicealways found it sufficient to disregard or throw out the extra man,and proceed as above.
