The Gardens at DCH and the DuPont Pavilion

We started the fiscal year worried about what the economicclimate would do to the Delaware Center for Horticultureand we ended the year on a bullish and enthusiastic note.

Our programs have continued to flourish. Wilmington hasits first urban farm. Friends of Parks groups planted treesand perennials and nurtured eight different parks in

Wilmington. We established a pilot return-to-work program for five men in Delaware’scriminal justice system. We completed and printed five significant publications thisyear, and won two ECO Awards in a national competition for environmentalcommunications. We have been featured in more articles in the local and nationalpress than ever before, and in an increasingly diverse range of publications.

During the coming year, we plan to build on current programming and add anothereducational component at the Baylor Correctional Institution garden. With thesupport of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, DCHis embarking on an ambitious amount of urban forestry work in the City ofWilmington and New Castle County; including updating the tree inventory,building our return-to-work programs, and planting hundreds of street trees. Wehave also begun exploring the feasibility of starting a capital campaign to increaseour meeting and office space and add green technology to our current headquarters.

I am especially proud of the lengthening tenure of our staff. Lenny Wilson justcelebrated 10 years of service. Gary Schwetz has served 12 years and MarciaStephenson has served 7 years. Joe Matassino, Anita Jimerson, Jen Bruhler,Ann Mattingly and Patrice Sheehan will soon be celebrating 5 years of service.We must be doing something right, that such talented and professional employeescontinue to invest their time and energy with DCH.

In addition to the staff, I’d like to thank our wonderful Board and tremendousCouncil of Advisors. We are extremely grateful for their effective leadership,guidance, time and many personal contributions. It really is an honor to servewith these dedicated and hard-working volunteers.

It has been my pleasure to serve as president of theDelaware Center for Horticulture this past year, andwhat a challenging year it was for us all.

As a professional in the financial services industry, Isaw first-hand how the ups and downs of the marketimpacted people, the community and our charitable

organizations. DCH experienced some uncertain times, and had to tighten our beltas did many other nonprofits; but I am proud to say that we have come out strong!

In 2009, DCH was dedicated toensuring the preservation of our urbanforest, to beautifying and building uponneighborhood support for city parks,and to providing urban agriculturalopportunities for Wilmington’s residents.We are committed to seeing programmaticgrowth continue in 2010 in a sustainable way.

With more than 600 volunteers—anincredible number of volunteers for anorganization of our size—plus our dedicatedstaff, Board of Directors and Council ofAdvisors, I feel confident of DCH’s successin the coming year. We have embarkedon a planning study to determine thefeasibility of expanding and improvingupon the Center’s headquarters. Welook forward to some exciting progresswith this effort.

Results included theplanting of 8,000 flowering bulbs,1,000 perennials and more than 50trees and shrubs.
