Golfer’s Guide

We are very excited about being part of the first digitaledition of this Golfer's Guide, named in my honor. Ourfriends at Scarlet Winter Publishing have produced a super

publication that will take you on a tour of some of the Gary PlayerDesign team's current and future developments, along with sometried and tested courses that continue to enhance the enjoyment ofthe golfing experience.

I am particularly proud of our new courses at Mazagan BeachResort in Morocco and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabiwhere our environmentally responsible design approach tookprecedence. Our design team took pains to ensure that bothcourses 'were one with nature' utilising the natural characteristics ofeach region and paying particular attention to water usage and thereduction of harmful chemicals. While both developments aretremendously environmentally sensitive, they hold much promise forthe growth of eco-sensitive golf design worldwide. Construction atZimbali Lakes on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal in South Africahas begun, and I look forward with much anticipation to thecompletion of this course in 2011. Bulgaria is a golf destinationwaiting to be discovered and the recent opening of theBlackSeaRama course will surely have a significant influence onthis region's emerging tourism market.

In addition to saving the planet, the dynamics of digital publishingare such that you can enjoy entirely new experiences, such as theinteractive views of signature holes and the graphics of eachcourse. I trust that you will enjoy this latest edition. You can feel freeto send it on to your family and friends as well, with minimal impacton the environment.

Aglobal leader in golf course design, as well as an expert in realestate planning and marketing, Gary Player Design has beendesigning and constructing golf courses around the world since

the early 80s. The team of seasoned professionals, under the BlackKnight's leadership, has already executed a portfolio of over 300projects in 35 countries on five continents.

One of the courses currently under construction is the 72 par, 7210yard (6,593m) Mazagan course in Morocco. Less than an hour fromCasablanca and within reach of the old fortified town of El Jadida, thisbreathtaking course will add extensive value to the world class KerznerInternational Mazagan Beach Resort.

Designed across undulating sand dunes with holes stretchingalongside the Atlantic coastline, the Mazagan course will offer playersimmaculate fairways and greens, with fabulous panoramic views. Thiswill be links golf at its best, with sea breezes drifting in from the AtlanticOcean and minimal rainfall to spoil a day's play.

Describing the concept of the Mazagan golf course, Mr Player says:“My design concept was twofold - to create a playable, memorable golfcourse that would also be enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. We

have quite a few heroic golf shots for the accomplished player, but theway I have designed the course allows for the high handicap player toplay along the ground in true links-style fashion and really enjoy theexperience. Equally important, we were able to utilise the dunes tocreate rolling fairways and greens to define the holes.”

“The course has several distinctive features,” Player continues. “Wehave designed the holes with wide fairways that can be played with thechanging wind conditions. This will offer the golfer a variety of anglesfrom which to approach each hole. Further, the course is unique in thatwe used one type of grass - Platinum Paspallum - wall to wall. Thisallowed me to design the course in such a manner that the greensbecame an extension of the fairways and we have some wonderfulputting surfaces.”

In addition to the 18-hole Gary Player signature golf course, the firstphase of the Mazagan Beach Resort will include a casino, a 500-roomhotel, 12 restaurants, a night club, conference centre and a luxury spa.

The US$350-million first phase, has recently been completed.TroonGolf, a leader in upmarket golf course management, has beenappointed to manage the Mazagan course.

Covering just under 120 000 square kilometres, the North WestProvince is conveniently sandwiched between Botswana and theprovince of Gauteng, that includes two of South Africa's major

cities, Pretoria and Johannesburg. As a result of seismic activities billionsof years ago, the geology of the region yields rich deposits of uranium andplatinum, as well as deposits of chromium, nickel, gold and diamonds.Parts of the province are used as agricultural land that yields maize, sunflower seeds and a variety of vegetables and dairy products. Thereare, however, vast stretches of land that provide the natural habitat for awide variety of wildlife and flora indigenous to the area.

Whether you fly into Johannesburg and land at OR Tambo Airport, or landat Lanseria Airport, your journey through the North West Province is besttaken via Hartbeespoort Dam. On the way, be sure to stop at the LesediCultural Village, where tribal dancers will welcome you with music, traditional dance and stories of their heritage. Situated in The Cradle ofHumankind, Lesedi was founded by world renowned African adventurer,Kingsley Holgate. The village showcases the cultures of the Zulu, Xhosa,Pedi, Ndebele and the Sotho tribes in a collection of five homesteads.Souvenirs can be purchased at the Ndebele Craft Market, before you setoff for further adventure on the road north.

Located between the Witwatersberg and Magaliesberg mountain ranges,Hartbeespoort Dam is a great attraction for those that enjoy being aroundwater. In addition to boat trips and fishing, you have an opportunity tosleep in an ox wagon, take a hot-air ballon trip, ride on a cable car to thetop of the mountain ridge and visit the Lake Predator Park. There aremany arts and crafts studios in the area and as you travel north of thedam, you will find the Welwitschia Country Market and ChameleonVillage, which carry an abundance of African souvenirs from all over the continent.

For game lovers, there are a total of 14 national parks and provincialreserves, as well as ten registered conservancies and several game farmsand ranches in the province. Close to the northern reaches of HartbeesportDam, The Elephant Sanctuary, which was started in 1999, offers an up-close-and-personal interface with African elephants. Here, you have theopportunity to feed them, walk trunk-in-hand with them - and even besmooched by them! Adjacent to the Elephant Sanctuary, Monkeyland givesyou the opportunity to walk amongst the monkeys along paths andsuspension bridges and the natural vegetation that makes up their habitat.

Further along the route, just past Brits, the Ukutula Lion Park & Lodgeoffers you the opportunity to handle young lion cubs and see them at play.Ukutula has a volunteer programme for overseas (and local) visitors whoprefer to add value during their visit and a research programme that isconducted in conjunction with the Onderstepoort Vetinary University, in aneffort to preserve this endangered species.

The De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre is another initiative that isdevoted to the preservation of Africa's dwindling predator species. Inaddition to its cheetah-rearing programme, De Wildt also breeds wild dogsin captivity as well as other rare species such as brown hyena, suniantelope, red and blue duiker and the riverine rabbit.

Two of the most prominent game parks in the province are ThePilanesberg National Park and the Madikwe National Park, which are bothadministered by the North West Parks & Tourism Board. While Madikweis only open to visitors that book at one of the many lodges on thereserve, the Pilanesberg National Park is open to day visitors as well.

Once a volcanic crater, the landscape of the Pilanesberg is now coveredby open grasslands, punctuated by hills and ravines. The diversity of SA TOURISM

habitats is home to a wide variety of wildlife andbirds, including the Big 5 and more than 30 otherlarge mammal species that roam the 55 000hectare park.

This reserve seldom disappoints visitors when itcomes to wildlife spotting and at the end of aday's excitement and adventure, the park has arange of accommodation options from which tochoose - including caravan parks, self-cateringunits, bed & breakfast establishments and luxurybush lodges.

Then, on the other hand, a mere 20 minutesaway, there is the Sun City Resort, with a choiceof 4 hotels, including the opulent Palace of TheLost City. Named 'Africa 's Kingdom of Pleasure',Sun City is known for its glamorous casinos, gourmet restaurants, extensive sports facilitiesand dazzling star-studded performances. Thisresort is truly family-oriented, offering everythingfrom the Valley of Waves and a games arcadefor children, slots and gaming tables forgamblers, theatre extravaganzas and SuperBowl shows as well as golf, horse riding and avariety of sports activities, such as archery andclay pigeon shooting, for those that want to keep active.

Situated on the eastern half of the BalkanPeninsula, Bulgaria is a country of rustic beautysteeped in history. The Black Sea Coast formsthe country's eastern border and has become apopular tourist destination, with intriguingByzantine and Roman ruins, secluded coves andwide stretches of beaches.

Quiet and predominantly rural in nature, Bulgaria, in southeastern Europe, seems to have escaped much of theworldwide recession. Having emerged from Communist rule in

1990, the country has started to blossom and is attracting a flurry offoreign investment.

Roughly the same size as England, but with a population of only 8-million, Bulgaria is seen as a largely unspoilt tourist destination thatoffers both summer and winter diversions. Known as the BulgarianRiviera, the Black Sea coastline that stretches some 380 km, hasmany resorts and coastal attractions. The Black Sea itself is calm andfree of strong tidal currents. The average mid-day high at the coast ispegged at 28 deg C in summer, while the water temperature reachesa balmy 26 deg C.

Blair Atholl, situated on the north-eastern boundary of the Cradle ofHumankind in Gauteng province, was the original home of GaryPlayer and his family’s well loved country retreat. This is a luxurious

eco-estate that was conceptualised to encapsulate an open, country-stylelifestyle that provides a safe haven for families to grow and thrive. The farmwas bought in 2003 and after a 2-year planning and assessment period, thedevelopers, Wraypex, broke ground in August 2005. Along with basicservices such as the water and electricity supplies, sewerage and wastedisposal, access roads and perimeter security, low density housing wasconsidered paramount in the quest for quality of life. The consensus wasreached to allow only 329 stands on the 618 ha estate, resulting in anoverall density of one dwelling per 2ha of land. The stands are an averageof an acre, but each one is positioned so that there is plenty of 'commonproperty' surrounding it. There are building guidelines in place to restrict thecoverage on each stand to 20% and the best description for the positioningof most of the new houses would be 'discreet'.

Some of the original farmhouses, including Gary Player's own home, havebeen retained. The new homes, following mainly classical and traditionalarchitecture, have been constructed to blend with their rural appointment. That's to say, understated in appearance, but certainly not in terms oftechnology. The estate provides fibre-optic technology that makes theentire estate a 'smart village'. This has been incorporated mainly for thesake of the state-of-the-art security system, but the spin-off is that thehouses are not just bricks and mortar - they are intelligent homes thatincorporate wireless connectivity, videos on demand, DSTV and motionsensors and laser beams, if required by the property owner.

Access controlImposing 8m high walls are definitely not in the scheme of things at BlairAtholl Estate. In fact those alienating feelings of being trapped inside a self-made prison in order to preserve one's life are just not on the agenda atall. The entire perimeter of the estate is surrounded by a fibre-opticallysensor and sector-driven palisade fence, called Electrosade. Biometricfingerprint recognition equipment has been installed at the access gates toallow residents free flow in and out of the estate. The security guards areemployed directly by the Blair Atholl management for stricter control andround-the-clock surveillance and a network of specialised CCTV cameras, that even pick up movement and images in the dark, is linked to thesecurity nerve centre to monitor movement in and around the estate. there is any kind of emergency, a rapid response unit is dispatched to thescene right away to assist residents.

Protecting the environmentWhile Blair Atholl Estate has 6,5 km of the Crocodile River winding thoughit, there were concerns that, with the constant irrigation of a world class golfcourse, water usage would have compromised the delicate eco-system ofthe area. Wraypex took these concerns into consideration and in response, they devised a recycling system that purifies and re-uses grey water for thedams, water features, the greens and the general landscaping.

To supply fresh water to the estate, the developers built their own 28kmpipeline to draw water from the northern water treatment farm just north ofDainfern in Fourways. This was literally ground-breaking in terms ofmaking sure that the environment and the surrounding countryside werenot affected by the estate development. In order to ensure sufficient powersupply to all of the homes planned for the estate, the Lanseria Airport'selectrical sub-station was upgraded.

You can feel the thrillIf you love horses and have a penchant for the game of golf, you willknow you have arrived, as you drive along the winding roads of BlairAtholl. Horses graze peacefully in neatly kept paddocks surrounded bywhite split-pole fencing. The original stables, where Gary Player kept histhoroughbred race horses, have been renovated and upgraded forprivate, residents-only stabling. Bridle paths wind over a thousand acresof shady river and hillside trails on the estate, gentle enough for beginneroutrides yet capable of allowing more strenuous exercise for experiencedriders. There are also lunging and jumping arenas and dressageménages. The stables are expertly managed and tuition is available forindividuals and groups.

ClubhouseYour first introduction to the Gary Player designed golf course is throughthe clubhouse, which is built from local rock in an Italian country style. From the parking area, the building appears to be somewhat low slung andrambling. It's only once you enter, that you are welcomed with the grandeurof the deep spacious reception rooms, plush furnishings and heavy drapesframing large windows that overlook the wide terrace, the start of thecourse and the Magaliesberg mountain range in the distance.

Facing one of the lounges, in a dedicated alcove, you will find GaryPlayer's grand slam trophies and memorabilia, set out in specialshowcases. Even non-golfers cannot help being caught up in the spirit of

the game, seeing the looks of triumph on the young Gary Player's face ashe won tournament after tournament since the early 1960s. Pictures ofother golfing legends over the past decades and the display of some of theprestigious trophies that have been won, all add to the atmosphere.

Alongside them, you will find evidence that the estate is already carving outa reputation all of its own. The development and the clubhouse have beenwinning their own accolades and these are proudly on display here.

So far, Blair Atholl has been recognised -• by Compleat Golfer with the 5 Star Golf Experience Award at the 2008

Revitalising body and soulIn a separate building alongside the clubhouse, the Savanna Spa providesa tranquil refuge where you can work out and regenerate body and soul. For exercise, there's the outdoor swimming pool, as well as squash courtsand a fully equipped gym. In the treatment rooms, trained staff perform awide variety of treatments such as body therapies, exfoliation, waxing, manicures and pedicures, eyebrow and eyelash tinting and massages. Forthose looking for that sun-kissed glow, there's a sunbed and skin bronzingfacility. Appointments can be booked for individual Pilates instruction, physiotherapy, sports massage and personal workouts. The juice bar andhealthy spa menu provide nourishment and recliners around the pool giveyou time to unwind and enjoy the open air and sunshine at your own pace.

Ranked as No.1 in the world by www.saveamillionshots.com, the BlairAtholl golf course is one of Gary Player's finest courses. Seeing that thecourse has been laid out across what was the Player family's country

retreat for over a quarter of a century, one can well understand that this was alabour of love for Gary.

At over 7500 square metres, the Blair Atholl course is the longest in SA. It hasbeen built in a long, expansive loop, with only two holes (the 1st and 18th holes)running alongside each other. The layout is characterised by rolling hills, withviews of the majestic Magaliesberg, the oldest mountain range in the world, andravines that slope down to the 6,5km stretch of the Crocodile River that windsthrough the estate. Whether alongside the Crocodile River or natural dams, theeleven water featured holes add lots of serenity and charm to the course.

The front nine holes are 600 metres shorter than the back nine, so the stop atthe Halfway House, set in dappled shade over the Crocodile River, is genuinelyappreciated by the time the players reach the end of the course. The design, both challenging and rewarding, allows for the testing of scratch players, yet stillensuring enjoyment for handicapped golfers.

The advanced aeration system installation under the greens helps with themaintenance, quality and consistency of the putting surface and benefits playersthrough the reduction of spring and summer surface maintenance, hollowtinning, topdressing and curative spraying. The irrigation system makes use ofgrey water to ensure optimal use of water and to reduce the golf course's impacton the natural surroundings.

A mere 2,5km from Lanseria Airport, situated in the luxury security estate of thesame name, Blair Atholl is a members only course. Alongside the superblyappointed clubhouse, there is a wellness centre/spa and the estate also boastsa full equestrian facility with 50 stables and dressage, jumping and lungingarenas.

Firmly established as one of South Africa's most prestigious andsuccessful developments of its kind, the Dainfern Golf Estate offerssafety and a superb carefree lifestyle in the Northern Suburbs of

Sandton. It was the second golf estate to be launched in South Africa andthe first in Gauteng.

The Dainfern Golf Course, opened in 1991, was designed by Gary Playeron the site of the old Fourways Golf Course, which was perfectly situatedon the banks of the Jukskei River. It has some of the most scenic yetchallenging holes in the country and is one of South Africa's most excitinggolf venues, testing the skills of proficient golfers, with play crossing theJukskei River six times.

Golf Digest has ranked the course in the top 50 of their Top 100 courses. The course is 6 289 metres off the club markers but can be stretched to 6637 metres off the tips when hosting a tour event. In 1992 Ernie Els wonthe South African Masters at Dainfern and the Seekers Travel Pro-Am onthe Sunshine Winter Tour is hosted here each September.

The last four holes on the front nine are a treat with the par-4 7th abruising 450 metres from the tips, played from a high tee to a fairwaybordered by the Jukskei. The approach shot to a slightly hidden green isthe big challenge of this stroke one hole. It's followed by an equallyattractive par-5, where the river has to be carried twice.

The clubhouse is perfectly situated in the centre of the Estate giving bothresidents and members a wonderful place to unwind in the late afternoonswith a magnificent view of the golf course or socialising in the bar.

This course is truly one that Gary Player Design can be proud of as thedesign is one that can be set up for all levels of golfers and is enjoyed byboth the local and international golfing community.

The Erinvale golf course, built on a narrow stretch of land, escalatingsharply uphill and in the shadow of one of the Cape's mostmagnificent mountains, the Helderberg, is at the heart of one of

South Africa's pioneering and most successful estate developments. Thissuccess was always guaranteed due to its location, on the borders ofSomerset West, close to the beaches of Gordon's Bay and the Strand, and only half an hour from the vibrant city centre of Cape Town, addingconvenience to the estate's extraordinary scenic offering.

Since Erinvale's inception in 1994, this Gary Player designed course hashosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and more recently both the 2003 and2004 South African Open, the 2nd oldest golf championship in the world.

The superbly maintained championship course at Erinvale is a course oftwo moods, offering the golfer two distinctly different nines. The flatoutward nine is defined by challenging approach shots to long narrowputting surfaces, with the inward nine offering beautiful vistas from itsundulating fairways and a finish that rates among the best in the world. The course is Par 72, with 63 bunkers, and 14 dams. Kikuyu grass isused for the fairways and roughs, with a mixture of Bent and Poa annuagrass used for the greens.

The Erinvale Clubhouse, that overlooks both the 9th and 18th holes, isbuilt on three levels. The Terrace Bar is situated at ground level and is afavourite venue after a round of golf, while the restaurant situated upstairsoffers a fine dining experience. A large, wooden sun deck extends outtowards the 18th hole offering a spectacular view of the golfers playingtheir final hole.

Practice facilities at the Ervinvale course include a driving range, a putting green and a chipping green. Drive carts, trolleys and even golf clubs areavailable for hire.

Gary Player’s TipThis is an excellent walk - beprepared for a tough walk onthe back nine, but the views arewell worth the effort. The windcan play a major role here, butremember the course wasdesigned with this in mind. The Links, situated at Fancourt in George, is one of Gary Player’sfavourite courses. The course has been fashioned around the typicalScottish and Irish links golf courses, where play is primarily along the

ground, making use of the contours to best effect.

Links land is normally close to the ocean, where the receding sea has lefta vast area of sand exposed to the elements, creating an endless variationof undulating dunes. At the Fancourt Links, this environment had to beartificially created as the site was originally an abandoned airfield that wasflat and featureless. The true value of this course, therefore, has beendetermined by the ingenuity and creativity of the design team, whichconsisted of owner Hasso Plattner and the Gary Player Design team.

The course has been designed to feature not only extremely long Par 3s,4s and 5s, but also very short holes. The endless variety of slopes, hollowsand bumps dictate the nature of play and contribute to the individuality ofthe holes. The layout is such that the golfer seldom sees part of anotherhole, creating the feeling that he is on his own on the golf course.

Notwithstanding the fact that The Links is a truly championship standardgolf course, enough width is offered to create a challenge that most golferswill experience as being achievable, rather than impossible. In the end, thegolf course not only looks like a typical links style golf course but also playslike one. To achieve this a lot of attention was given to selecting the correctgrass varieties grown on tees, fairways, semi-roughs and greens. The outof play dune areas also feature typical coastal bush areas and areaswhere sand is evident, replicating a typical exposed side of a dune.

The Links has hosted a number of prestigious international events, includingthe 2003 President’s Cup, the inaugural Women’s World Cup of Golf in 2005,the 2006 SA Open and the Gary Player Invitational in 2008. Two excitingevents coming up this season include the South African leg of the GaryPlayer Invitational taking place from 27-29 November 2009, as well as SouthAfrica’s first European Senior Tour event, the Berenberg Bank Masters from26-28 March 2010.

Gary Player’s TipPlay your very own 'British Open'here. Yes it's tough, but it'smeant to be! There is quite a lotof space off the tees and oftenit's best just to aim for the heartof the green, rather than goingfor the flags.

Rated the No.1 course in South Africa by Compleat Golfer in 2008,the Gary Player Country Club course is part of the world renownedSun City entertainment complex, which is a short flight or 2-hour

drive from either Johannesburg or Pretoria. Bordering the PilanesbergNational Park and situated adjacent to another Player-designed course, the Lost City golf course, the Gary Player Country Club is the venue forthe Nedbank Golf Challenge which is played in December every year.Offering a US$1.2 million cheque for the winner, the Nedbank GolfChallenge has, in past years, been won by golfing greats such as SeveBallesteros, Ian Woosnam, Nick Price, David Frost, Bernhard Langer andlocal golfing heroes Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

The Gary Player Country Club course is acknowledged as a difficult anddemanding course that requires stamina and accuracy from players. Thecomparatively flat nature of the course is misleading, as water hazards, cunningly sited bunkers and pins hidden away on kidney shaped greensmake up for the lack of gradient. Off the back markers, the coursemeasures over 7 000 metres, which makes this one of the longestcourses in the world. However, a variety of tees makes it possible toshorten the course and render it playable for all levels of golfers.

The course has kikuyu grass on the tees, fairways and the semi-roughs,with bent grass on the greens. With a normally warm to hot climate in theregion, it is essential to take plenty of drinking water with you when playingthis layout and you are well advised to keep your ball on the fairway as thekikuyu rough is thick.

Golf carts are mandatory on this course and there are plenty of caddiesavailable to help you carry your clubs. The dress code on the course is'smart casual' golf clothing.

The Zimbali Coastal Resort is a highly sought-after residential estatelocated on KwaZulu Natal's Dolphin Coast, north of Durban. With itsdistinctive fusion of Asian and African architecture, lush vegetation

and favourable climate, the estate has attracted many elite residents andvisitors from across South Africa and all over the world.

A fitting sequel to this highly successful residential and leisuredevelopment is the R7-billion Zimbali Lakes Resort Development. Themain attraction to this estate will be the Gary Player designed course thatis about to break ground. This 18 hole signature championship golfcourse, the first Gary Player Design project on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, will make extensive use of the dramatic terrain that offers significantelevation changes, providing for stunning vistas between tee-boxes and greens.

Using a blend of traditional design principles and modern technology, witha strong emphasis on enjoyment of the stunning views that the estate hasto offer, the course designers are aiming to create a course thatexemplifies natural beauty in harmony with this challenging, undulatingterrain.

The Zimbali Lakes Resort site brings some interesting challenges to thedesign and construction teams as the areas surrounding the course havelargely been designated as wetlands. Development of this course willinvolve extensive earthworks in conjunction with conservation planningand indigenous planting to prevent erosion during the construction phaseand afterwards. A characteristic of Gary Player Design is the utilisation ofthe existing topography to determine the layout of the course and thepreservation of the natural environment as far as possible.

Furthermore, a state-of-the art driving range and golfing academy will adda full service golfing experience to what will be one of the province'spremier golfing destinations. The course is expected to takeapproximately 18 months to complete once construction begins. It isexpected be opened in May 2011.

One of the most revered clubs in the world, the Augusta NationalGolf Club in the USA hosts the annual Masters Tournament, where many a golfing legend has graced the greens. This 365-

acre property was previously an indigo plantation and then a plantnursery. The nursery closed in 1918, but many flowering plants and treesremained and were preserved when the golf course was built. Designedby Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, the course is renowned for itsbeauty and its immaculately maintained greens.

Part of Augusta's success formula is that, as a seasonal club, the courseis closed each May and reopened in October, after the peak summermonths are over. This eliminates a lot of wear and tear and enables thestaff to focus on improvements and maintenance.

As the tournament is held in spring, the beauty of the course during theMasters is mainly attributed to natural timing, with a little help from theprofessionals. A soil lab and on-site weather station are part of thesuccess formula. Chemical usage is monitored and airflow technology isused to reduce the need for fertilisers and pesticides. Much of the water isrecycled and trees and shrubs are often hand watered to conserve water.

Augusta's tees and fairways are Bermuda grass, which is overseededeach autumn with rye grass. The trees receive particular attention, withsupports applied to weak trees and general lightning protection to ensurethat they stay healthy. To the left of the 11th hole, a 55-acre forest is hometo wildlife and thousands of migratory birds. Some parking areas havebeen left unpaved to reduce runoff of surface water and a tree mulchingprogramme is in place to prevent soil erosion and improve the soil quality.

To share the knowledge and expertise utilised at the course, AugustaNational has an intern programme, through which more than 100 golfcourse maintenance professionals from other courses have already been trained.

Rolling topography, pristine wetland habitat, lakes and windingstreams, patches of mature trees, open spaces and natural rockoutcrops all characterise The ACE Club course, located a short

distance from Philadelphia's city centre.

Designed by Gary Player, this 18 hole course is playable and challengingfor golfers of every skill level. The course ranges from 5,200 yards fromthe forward tees to 7,500 yards from the longest tees. With five teeplacements on each hole, the course has been created to accommodatediscerning golfers with modern equipment and the latest ball technology.Carefully considered course architecture challenges the golfer to trydifferent strategies based on hole routing, wind direction and his or herown strength. The greens are beautifully contoured, with some severeslopes and undulations as well as multiple levels that frequently drop off todeep ravines. The numerous bunkers are not only found around thefairways, there are some in the fairways themselves. This can besomewhat intimidating for the average golfer, yet challenging to the skilledplayer and certainly something that entices players to come back and playthis course again and again.

Practice facilities include a two tiered driving range, six target greens thatgive the player an authentic game-like experience, an oversize puttinggreen and two acres with fairways and bunkers, dedicated to iron andwedge practice.

The strategy employed throughout the design and engineering of thecourse, along with the maintenance programme, qualifies this courseaccording to the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Programme, where ithas been given the elite Silver Signature Series designation for itsenvironmental responsibility.

The serene and secluded 311-acre environment is owned and operatedby ACE North America, part of the Swiss-incorporated ACE Group ofcompanies. Established to promote networking opportunities for theinsurance industry, The ACE Club is the only private corporate-oriented golf club in Philadelphia. The PGA National Course at The Belfry in Warwickshire is the onlycourse in England where the PGA is played. The Belfry is alsohome to the headquarters of The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland,

The PGA of Europe, and the PGA National Training Academy

The newest of three courses located at The Belfry, the Dave Thomas-designed PGA course provides an interesting and exciting test of golf onbig greens. Originally farmland, the landscape has nevertheless beengiven lots of variety with extensive mounding separating the fairways andfour man-made lakes providing many water hazards. The bunkers havebeen well-positioned and once the trees mature, the PGA will become atighter playing course.

This Par 72 course is not recommended for traditionalists, though. Playing6639 yards, it has a distinctly American flavour and is described as a'stern' course built for optimum spectator viewing during top tournaments. The star hole is the par-5 12th, with banks on either side of the fairwaygiving it an amphitheatre feel.

The Belfry is amongst the finest clubs in the world and the three coursesare set out in the style of the Augusta National in the US, on a 360 acrepark. The sister courses to the PGA course are the Brabazon, host tonumerous Ryder Cup tournaments, and the Derby.

The clubhouse is most impressive and the accompanying hotel andcorporate facilities are excellent. The PGA Golf Academy based at TheBelfry has a 34 bay floodlit driving range, a short game practice area andthe Mini Brabazon 18 hole putting course. The Academy offers tuition toboth juniors and seniors as well as video analysis of players' techniques. There is also a Nike golf shop and a custom fitting suite on site.

With breathtaking views of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, theexclusive gated BlackSeaRama resort has luxurious villas, modern amenities and the first Gary Player designed

championship golf course in Eastern Europe. Located within easy reachof the Varna International Airport and the vibrant city of Varna,BlackSeaRama appeals to a niche market of golfers, investors andleisure-seekers that enjoy security in an upmarket environment.

As far as golf is concerned, Bulgaria is still a fledgling market and it wasimportant that the course be designed to make the game enjoyable for alllevels of players. This is a natural links-style course although the fairwaysare a bit wider and the greens more generous, to accommodate noviceplayers. The course is nevertheless of a high enough standard to be ableto host a PGA European Tour Event.

Being a coastal course, there is a fair amount of wind, but the spectacularscenery and natural landscape make play here a most memorableexperience. Drought-tolerant blue grass has been used on the fairwaysand bent grass on the greens. There are very few water hazards, although there are wetlands that have been created around the course toencourage birdlife.

Paying tribute to the country's rich heritage, replicas of ruins found in theregion have been incorporated in the architecture of the course and infront of the clubhouse, an open-air amphitheatre has been built in thestyle typically used by the ancient civilizations of yore.

The Tuscan-themed clubhouse has a restaurant, bars, an indoorswimming pool, a jacuzzi and sauna facilities. There is a state-of-the-artgolf academy with two driving ranges and golf pros available for tuition. The resort also has a tennis academy, fitness centre and wellness facility.

Designed by Gary Player in 1996, Cougar Point Golf Course was rated'Golf Course of The Year' by both the South Carolina Golf CourseOwners Association and the Charleston Golf Course Owners Association

in 2007. Located just a few miles from Charleston, South Carolina, the coursewas built on the site of the former Marsh Point course on Kiawah Island.

The Cougar Point course has been designed to championship standards thatchallenge the scratch player while providing an enjoyable round for all levels ofplayers. It plays 6875 yards with a strategic layout where players need to thinktheir way around the course. The par-72 layout features holes playing directlyalong broad expanses of tidal marsh, offering panoramic views of the KiawahRiver and features a combination of scenic Par 3s, a blend of short and longPar 4s and risky, yet rewarding Par 5s.

The long par-4s feature wide landing areas and open-run-up areas in front ofthe green making them reachable by the shorter hitters using a wood or long-iron. The short par-4s challenge players to find specific landing areas on theirdrives to avoid obstacles and find the best angles to the greens. Hole 6 hasspectacular views, while hole 17 is considered by many to be one of theprettiest and most challenging holes on the course. One of the most dramaticvistas on Kiawah Island is the middle of Cougar Point's front nine that playsalong the Kiawah River.

As with all the other courses on Kiawah Island, Cougar Point has numerouswater hazards. There is a diversity of wildlife that adds spice to playing thiscourse, not least of which are the alligators.

The four other courses on the island are Oak Point, the Ocean Course, OspreyPoint and Turtle Point. However, it's Cougar Point that was recently awarded41/2 stars in Golf Digest's 'Best Places to Play' reader's poll, making this coursean excellent choice for a round of golf while visiting the island.

The 447 hectare Ria Bintan Golf and Beach Resort in Indonesia hasmany attractions, including the 302-roomed Club Med Ria Bintanand a luxury residential component. As main attractions, there are

two Gary Player-designed golf courses - the 9 hole Forest Course and the18 hole Ocean Course.

Over and above the courses themselves, there is a well-appointedclubhouse that has magnificent views of the South China Sea, a spa thatoffers pre- and post-game massages, a putting green and a 20-baydriving range.

Taking the inherent natural beauty of the site as a backdrop, Gary Playerdesigned both courses to provide a challenging, yet enjoyable golfexperience, while bringing players closer to nature. The variety offered bythe forested areas and the ocean vistas, along with the large differencesin elevation across the landscape ensures that the golfer has anexhilarating experience that will not easily be forgotten.

The nine hole Forest Course is shorter and tighter than either the frontnine or the inner nine of the Ocean Course, but it is nevertheless veryscenic, taking you through a natural environment of rain forest andwetlands.

After the first four holes of the Ocean Course, where water plays asignificant role, you are taken on a journey back through the jungle untilhalfway through the 7th hole, when you return to the ocean views. Thelong par-4 18th hole, with a deep ravine protecting the front left of thegreen, proves a tough close to the game.

For its focus on environmental sustainability, the Ria Bintan Golf Course isthe first golf course in Indonesia to have been awarded designation as acertified Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary Golf Course. The Ria BintanOcean Course has further been distinguished as the Best Golf Course inIndonesia for the last 5 years (2004 - 2008) and was also proclaimed theBest Golf Course in Asia for 2008.

Set alongside the world's largest cluster of renowned culturalinstitutions, such as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum and theLouvre Abu Dhabi Museum, the Saadiyat Beach Golf Course, built

on Saadiyat Island, the 27 square kilometre island lying 500 metresoffshore from the UAE capital, is set to raise the bar and establish a newstandard of golf experience across the Arab region.

As the Gulf's first and only ocean course, the Par 72 Saadiyat courseweaves in and out of the sites of nine five-star hotels. It features severalbeach-front holes and one third of the course commands spectacularviews of the Gulf's crystal waters fringed by pristine white sandedbeaches.

The Gary Player designed Saadiyat Beach Golf Course offers aspectacular variety of golf experiences, with every hole having its ownunique character. Designed in a classic figure of eight configuration withan amphitheatre style, the course will be capable of hosting majortournaments in the future.

Describing the course as being 'at one with nature', Player has used theisland's natural setting as the basis for some striking landscape designs.Bermuda grass is the primary turf used for the fairways, greens and tees, with drought-tolerant Bahai turf selected for the outer rough and fairwayperipheries, as it uses less water.

Operated by Troon Golf, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club will have adistinguished practice range, a Golf Academy and a state-of-the-artclubhouse. The club's facilities will be open to its members, as well asoffering a 'Member for the Day' arrangement to UAE residents and also toguests from the surrounding hotels, on a pay-and-play basis.

Distinguished by the magazine, Travel&Leisure Golf, as one of theTop 10 Best Golf Resorts in the World, TPC Sawgrass offersvisitors a choice of two golf courses and the most amazing

amenities. Situated on Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, between Jacksonvilleand historic St. Augustine, TPC Sawgrass is one of golf's most desirabledestinations.

Designed by Pete Dye, THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPCSawgrass is the site of the prestigious The Players PGA Championshipheld annually. The course is ranked among the top 80 golf courses in theworld, according to Golf Magazine, and ranked No.1 among the BestResort Courses in Florida by Travel & Leisure.

The brief to Dye, when designing this course, was that there had to be aselection of short, medium and long holes within the categories of par-3s,par-4s and par-5s. No two consecutive holes should play in the samedirection and there should be both right and left doglegs.

The course has been built to give spectators as much enjoyment oftournaments as the players experience themselves. It covers 7,215 yardsfrom the longest tees for a par 72.

Its signature hole, the 17th, is possibly the most photographed in theworld. Although technically a peninsula, this highly intimidating green isknown as the Island Green. Measuring only 132 yards from tee to green,it is an undulating 78 feet in length with only a small bunker in front of it.The link to the rest of the course is a narrow path, otherwise it iscompletely surrounded by water, amidst a canyon of trees. It is estimatedthat easily 100 000 balls are retrieved from the surrounding water everyyear - need we say more?

Initially when the Stadium course was built, the reviews reflected ameasure of frustration amongst those that ventured on the course. However, in 2006, the course underwent extensive renovation and theresult has been a challenging and most memorable experience for all whoplay there.
