THE GATETRI-ANNUAL NEWSLETTER OF COLLEGE POSSIBLEVOLUME XIII • WINTER 2017 • OPEN A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY
Where Are They Now? - Checking in with studentsYou first met Mayra Alaniz in 2014, after she had completed her first year at Georgetown University. Mayra spoke about how her high school coach, Matt, had encouraged her to apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which she was awarded as a high school senior. The scholarship covers her full tuition, provides academic support and leadership development training. Now, Mayra is a senior and working hard to finish her last semester at Georgetown. Her major is in government, with a sociology minor. She credits
College Possible with helping her get to where she is today. “College Possible prepared me not only to go to college, but to work really hard to make it to Georgetown,” Mayra said. “My high school coach, Matt, has stayed in contact with me throughout college and has encouraged me to keep going and get my degree.”After college, Mayra plans to return to Milwaukee to give back and share her talents. She is considering work in the nonprofit, government or business sector.
"I will continue to learn and pave the way
for others like me," Mayra said.
Erika Johnson is finishing up her final semester at Dartmouth College. As a high school student at Saint Joan Antida, Erika worked with her coach Erin, to apply for the competitive Questbridge scholars program. Through Questbridge, Erika was awarded a full-ride scholarship and she has very much enjoyed her college experience. “My favorite thing about college has been meeting people of so many backgrounds and being able to learn so much from them,” said Erika. “I feel that being at college and mixing
with such a myriad of people has opened my eyes and mind, giving me a more worldly view.” Erika will graduate in the spring with a major in sociology. She says that though she is away from home and the College Possible office, it has been reassuring to know that College Possible coaches are always there to provide advice and encouragement. After graduation, Erika hopes to gain some work experience with a mix of education and business. She plans to apply to business school in the next few years.
Erika will graduate from Dartmouth this spring and plans to work for a few years
before attending business school.
Henry Eruchalu was just entering his freshman year at Marquette University in 2014 when you read about him and his high school coach Eric in the Gate. Now, Henry is a junior working toward graduation in the spring of 2018. As a student in Marquette’s Educational Opportunity Program, Henry received a generous scholarship which removed many financial barriers on his path to
degree completion. Working with his college coach Eli, Henry has been busy completing the FAFSA, creating study plans and thinking about future career opportunities. Henry’s degree will be in sociology and criminology. Although extra-curriculars keep Henry busy, he still finds time to say “hi” to his old high school coach Eric, who now works at Marquette as an admissions counselor. Henry is studying sociology and criminology.
He is set to graduate in the spring of 2018.

Here at College Possible we love to celebrate
the amazing achievements of our students.
On April 27 we will again host the Dream
Big Dinner, our annual event celebrating our
college graduates - this year, the class of 2017!
The Dream Big Dinner will also celebrate
local community members who have made
significant strides in transforming the culture
of Milwaukee education for College Possible
students. Jennifer and Tom Florsheim, long-
time supporters of College Possible, will serve
as co-chairs of the event.
“We firmly believe in the work of College Possible as they make college a reality for more and more Milwaukee students,” said the Florsheims. “We see College Possible filling a void by helping low-income high school students consider college, go through the admission process, transition to college life and become college graduates.”
The Dream Big Dinner will be a night of celebration honoring the success of College Possible students, the AmeriCorps members who work with students and the awardees who are crucial to the mission of College Possible.
