A Message from your PTA Board

Happy Spring!

This year has flown by! It is already the end of March and in a quick blink of our eyes it will be June. So many exciting things are on the horizon for Grass Lake students.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Your PTA is already looking ahead to next year with budget planning and filling important volunteer positions. On page 2 of this newsletter we have a list of our Chair and Board positions that need someone like you to take charge of. Please, consider taking an hour or two a month to help out. Be your kid’s biggest fan!

We have 2 very important positions that need to be filled by the end of the school year - Secretary and Treasurer. Our goal is to have people in place ASAP so the current Secretary and Treasurer can train their replacements and work side-by-side with them through the end of the year.

We have many exciting events planned over the next 8 weeks including the very popular Teacher Pancake Breakfast and Carnival. We also have important business to attend to before the year is over with our 3remaining Board Meetings and our General Membership Meeting where you can review the budget for next year and vote for incoming Board members. This is your chance to ask questions and get involved. We hope to see many of you on May 18th.

June will be here before we know it. Let’s enjoy these last few weeks of the 2016 - 2017 school year! Gators Rock!

Have You Volunteered Lately? There are many ways to help out Grass Lake and the PTA.

Please consider one of the following:

Becoming a board Member or Chairperson

We are in desperate need of help for the 2017 - 2018 school year. If you have an hour or two a month to help out, either on a committee or as a board member, please consider joining

us! We have a number of volunteers who will be leaving us at the end of this school year and we would love to have people ready to take on the challenge of running our PTA. If you have questions or want to know more information about a certain position,

please reach out to the current PTA board. Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Open positions are:

BOARD POSITIONS: Secretary | Treasurer | Membership

COMMITTEE CHAIRS: Carnival | Clothing Bank | Emergency Prep | Fitness Friday | PTA Newsletter | Spring Fundraiser | Teacher Pancake Breakfast | Yearbook

All training will be provided and most committee chair positions are one event only. You can hook up with your friends and share any committee chair position.

Working on the PTA Board is a great place to get involved. Working closely with other parents you help plan the PTA year, plan and execute the budget, keep parents, staff and commu-nity members up-to-date on events and important information. All open board positions take

a few hours a month of your time.

For more information on the Secretary or Treasurer position, please reach out to any current board member (listed on the last page of this newsletter) or attend our next PTA Board meet-

ing on April 3rd.

Legislation and AdvocacyLegislative Platform

The Washington State PTA legislative platform is a two-year platform to mirror the Washington State legislative cycle. On the even-numbered years, the new platform is voted on by members at the legislative assembly in the fall. The top five issues become our short-term platform and consist of our priority issues when advocating throughout the year. Other issues are placed on an “also supported” list. During the odd-numbered years, members vote to amend current issues or to add new, emerging issues to the also supported list.

Top 5 Legislative Priorities for 2017

Social Emotional Learning

Prioritize school climate through strong social and emotional learning supports to maximize learning opportunities that help Washington students succeed in school and life.

Amply Fund Basic Education

It is time to keep the promise made to the children of Washington State in the McCleary decision by fullfilling Washington State’s paramount duty to amply fund basic education.

Closing the Opportunity Gap

Provide teacher training and student support that includes effective solutions to close the education opportunity gap.

Standards for Para-Educators

Provide a quality education for all students receiving instruction from para-educators by establishing • Statewide standards, training, and career development for para-educators,• Minimum employment standards, certification and endorsements,• Training for teachers who have para-educators assisting in their classrooms, and their principals.

Breakfast After the Bell

Washington State currently ranks 45th for utilization of the federal school breakfast program and cur-rently, only 1/3 of eligible children have access to this program.
