Tips for Parents Our students are spending more and more time on the inter-net these days to complete their school tasks, researching assignments and interacting with others. Social media sites can be useful for certain educational tasks, therefore it is im-portant for you along with your child to understand fully the sites visited as well as the best practices and usage of a social media tool like Facebook. Below is an infographic designed by Fuzion, a marketing and PR design company that wanted to help educate students on how to use Facebook safely and easily.

PSSA Cross Country Champs….
Last Friday Barellan Central School was represented by
33 students at the PSSA District Cross Country carnival,
held in Ganmain. A great course unfolded and the stu-
dents participated to the best of their ability in quite
chilly conditions. Everyone competed with great
sportsmanship and tried extremely hard. There were
several stand out performances with 3 age champions
being awarded to Barellan. Jane Haeusler won the 10
years girls, Paige Kenny won the 11 years girls and Max
Findlay won the 12/13 years boys age groups. These
students have qualified to compete at the Riverina
Cross Country carnival, to be held in Deniliquin on June
10. Joining them is Anika Praestiin, Jake Bourchier,
Norm Haeusler and Ebony Praestiin who also finished
in the top 4 in their respective age groups.
Barellan Central School finished as the champion
school with 26 points and also came 2nd in the handi-
cap division. This is a great achievement as we are
quite a big school, which makes being competitive in
the handicap section difficult.
Thankyou to the abundance of enthusiastic parents
and supporters who braved the cold to cheer on our
students and helped on checkpoints

Please keep reading the Gazette each week to ensure you do not miss important announcements. Primary students are participating in the Hot Shots tennis program this term with Louise Hornery. K/1/2 participate every Wednesdays after lunch. If students have not returned their $9 to the school please do so ASAP. We will also be doing sport on Fridays. Please re-mind students to wear their sport uniform and ap-propriate footwear.
This Week
News We will continue the Time to Talk news program this term. Students will be working toward including all aspects into their news stories and ensuring it is in a logical order.
Homework
Home Reading
Unfortunately this term hasn’t begun well with the number of students re-turning home readers. Please en-courage students to do their reading each night and return their folder each day. This is a important aspect in students learning at this stage.
Home-work sheets
Many students in K/1/2 were excited to get homework sheets again last week. It is wonderful to see students so positive about their learning. New homework will be coming home to-day.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2014
LETTER TO PARENTS
In May 2014 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of stu dents
across Australian schools.
The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to su pport
teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s l evel of
achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.
Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the
National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s righ t to privacy
is maintained.
The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 13 - 15 May 2014.
In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two
Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student
should use the calculator that they currently use at school.
In 2014, as in previous years, the Writing task will be a single common task for all students. The 2014 Writing test will req uire stu-
dents to respond to either a persuasive or narrative Writing prompt. However, the genre of the prompt will not be disclosed p rior
to the test period.
Wherever possible, schools will organise for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tes ts at
another time during testing week. Individual students are not permitted to sit tests after Friday 16 May 2014.
Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if:
they are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, o r
they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate
in the tests.
All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support
in the classroom may be provided. Large print, Braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet th e needs
of individual students.
Access to disability adjustment or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school Principal and a parent or carer con-
sent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by
parents in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be
signed.
Please make an appointment with the Principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s parti cipation
in NAPLAN.
Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html.

BARELLAN SHOW SOCIETY SPECIAL
MEETING
TUESDAY 6TH MAY 7PM @ THE CLUB

Barellan Show Committee
Sister Margaret Quade Memorial Fund
For those new to our community - Sr Margaret Quade
was born and spent her childhood at Barellan. On
completion of her education she entered the nursing
profession and became well known and respected
within her profession. Eventually Margaret became
‘Sister’ at our then hospital, becoming an important
part of our community, some believing she was as
good as a doctor. Sister Margaret Quade was present-
ed with ‘Citizen of the Year’ awarded by Narrandera
Shire Council in 1982.
In 1985 following the untimely death of Sister Quade
from breast cancer, Barellan Hospital Auxiliary held a
meeting and at this it was decided to start a “Sister
Margaret Quade Memorial Fund”, as Margaret had
believed Barellan needed “Aged Care Units” this was
talked about. Gradually funds were raised and dona-
tions received.
In 1988 a public meeting was held regarding the funds
raised and it was decided to continue raising money
for future Aged Care Units and with some of the inter-
est earned present a scholarship to district students
who entered the nursing profession. Scholarship to be
called the “Margaret Quade Memorial Scholarship”.
Trustees were elected to control funds, these were Mr
Peter Findlay, Mrs Doreen Bewes-Pearson (now de-
ceased) and Mrs Val Hawker. Narrandera Shire made
a generous donation to fund scholarships and future
plans. A number of awards have been made over the
years.
In October 2011, following a written request from
Barellan Aged Care Support Group enquiring if the
fund was available to support the proposed units, as
this was the original plan when funding began, the
trustees agreed that the funds would be available to
the Support Group when required.
The final Margaret Quade Scholarship worth $500 was
awarded to Alice Kenny who plans to be an Occupa-
tional Therapist. Congratulations Alice and you are
wished every success with your studies.
“The Margaret Quade Memorial Fund” principal
worth $16,900 was presented to the Barellan Aged
Care Support Group, with a request that Sister Marga-
ret Quade be recognised in some way within the de-
velopment.
A memorial of Margaret Quade is hanging on the wall of
the Barellan Hall, near the stage.
