ZiryabThe Slave Who Changed SocietyZiryab (789-857 AD) was a Persian polymath: a poet, musician, singer, cosmetologist, fashion designer, celebrity, trendsetter, strategist, astronomer, botanist, geographer and former slave. Most people have never heard of Ziryab, yet at least two of his innovations remain to this day: he introduced the idea of a three course meal (soup, main course, pudding) and he introduced the use of crystal for drinking glasses (previously metal was the primary material). He introduced asparagus and other vegetables into society, and made significant changes and additions to the music world. He had numerous children, all of whom became musicians, and spread his legacy throughout Europe. He could perhaps be considered an ancient Bach. The list of societal changes Ziryab made is immense – he popularized short hair and shaving for men, and wore different clothes based on the seasons. He created a pleasant tasting toothpaste which helped personal hygeine (and longevity) in the region, and also invented an underarm deodorant. He also promoted bathing twice daily.

Identify X

X comes from a Late Latin word which meant "farmland", in the sense of someone who is bound to the soil of a villa, which is to say, worked on the equivalent of a plantation in Late Antiquity, in Italy or Gaul. It referred to a person of less than knightly status and so came to mean a person who was not chivalrous. As a result of many unchivalrous acts, such as treachery or rape, this word took on its modern meaning.

The first record of use of X appears to be in 1836 (in Smart's "Walker Remodelled") :“The word X is a sort of a kind of a word That people apply to some being absurd; One who seems, as t'were oddly your fancy to strike In a sort of a fashion you somehow don't like A mixture of odd, and of queer, and all that Which one hates, just, you know, as some folks hate a cat; A comical, whimsical, strange, droll -- that is, You know what I mean; 'tis -- in short, -- 'tis a X! ”

[from "Etymology of X," Charles Dibdin, 1842]

Identify X

In 1835 Francis Pettit Smith discovered a new way of building X. Up to that time, they were literally screws, of considerable length. But during the testing of one boat, the screw snapped off, leaving a fragment shaped much like a modern X. The boat moved faster. At about the same time, Frédéric Sauvage and John Ericsson applied for patents on vaguely similar, although less efficient shortened-screw X , leading to an apparently permanent controversy as to who the official inventor is among those three men.

It is also a name of a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century, arguably earlier, within the African-American communities of the Southern United States. This logo was originally designed in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement by Gerald Holtom. Holtom, an artist and designer, made it for a march from Trafalgar Square, London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England, organised by the Direct Action Committee to take place in April and supported by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). This remained the logo for CND until a decade after which it was generalized to be the symbol for X.

The symbol is a combination of the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for "nuclear disarmament". In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an inverted "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. Superimposing these two signs forms the shape of the centre of the X symbol.
