From the Director's Chair

“Art is the Triumph over chaos.”-John Cheever

This quote seemed to be fitting as we head to the High Museum of Art and “The Allure of the Automobile” exhibit this month. As the cool pleasant temps of the spring have given way to the heat and humidity of the Atlanta summer, I think the timing is perfect for the enjoyment of automotive design in the cool dry climate that I hope to find indoors at the “High”.

This will be my first venture inside the doors of the High. I went to Paris when I was 23 and rather than going to the Louvre with the rest of my friends, my then fiancé’ (Terri Schnatmeier) and I, chose to sit at an outdoor café in the shadows of the Louvre, drinking French wine and people watching. Suffice to say that I am not one that spends much time looking at paintings and sculptures. I do still enjoy looking at the beautiful Terri Schnatmeier Orr over a bottle of wine 27 years later.

So as I ponder the “Allure of the Automobile”, I am reflecting on the Triumph models that I love most from a purely esthetics standpoint.I personally find it difficult to top the earliest Spitfire bodies designed by Giovanni Michelotti, and the early GT6 models as well. If I could fit in those cars AND drive them at the same time, I might own one today! I also love the TR4 another pure Michelotti design. And my TR6 being a Karmann revision on Michelotti’s work is still an eye catcher and it has the added personal benefit of being able to handle my 6’ 3” 245 lb frame. I can enjoy the way it looks AND I actually get to drive it too!

So as I venture to the museum this Sunday, I expect to be blown away by some gorgeous lines and beautiful finishes. I’m sure that my imagination will run wild. But when it’s all said and done, I’ll have had more fun “dancing with the one that brung me”.

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

-Jim

Atlanta Import Auto Parts had its "Grab-Your-Own-Spares Day" this past weekend. Attendance was good, but Lamar was disappointed that more 'large bulk' items were not sold. I have it under rumor that the unsold panels are going to the crusher so if you were sitting on the fence about one of those items you may want to get in touch with Lamar before it goes bye bye. You can contact Lamar at [email protected].

This month has been a bit of a blur for me and I'm having ahard time recollecting what all happened so I'm sure I will misstelling you some of the good bits. Big of course on the events list was British Car Day in Rome, GA. I have to say I was disappointedat the turnout. Although mother nature cooperated for most of theday, I think it must have scared away a good number of cars. The GTA and Triumph was there in force, fielding what probablywas the most of any marque present. MG made a challenge but it looked to me like they were outnumbered. Speaking of MG andone of those, "You couldn't plan it that way if you tried." moments, someone fielded an MG this year painted in the exact same color as my Stag! Doh! I felt like a girl at the prom staring at that 'other girl' wearing MY dress. Grumble guumble....It looks better on me anyway. I haven't done much work on the Stag as of late, although I did finally pony up for some new tires, and I alsoswapped a vaccum line on the carb which has improved the idle a tad, after which I readjusted my carb and timing since the new radiator is handling the heat I was able to lean the carb out a bit and add some advance, which squeezed out a bit more power and boosted the fuel economy in the process. I was running with these settings before but the radiator wasn't dealing with it. I really need to swap my single plane manifold for a dual plane....but that's a story for another time.

The TR7 project is progressing, I stripped out the nose of the car removing the AC accoutrements, k-member etc. I was shocked at how heavy the dual cooling fans are! It never ceases to amaze me how Triumph engineers could futz with making aluminum brackets in the name of 'saving weight' (probably a few ounces) and then turn around and dump 25 pounts of sheet steel into a fan cowl system?? As I have some friends in the heating and air industry, I'm discussing with them the possibility of reproducing the original style cowl in aluminum. I could just go the route of bolting the fan to the rad, but I like the look of the dual cowl fan when viewed through the front spoiler.

I've spent a lot of time this last week working on some small bits in an effort to clear off my welding table. When I was in the throws of dissassembling the 7, I tossed a lot of stuff onto it to be assessed and either refinished or discarded. I am happy to say that not much is ending up in the discard pile. I did manage a little down time over the Memorial Day weekend. Didn't do any wrenching, just went to a casino in Mississippi. Ron White was performing his comedy act there and a buddy of mine asked me if I'd like to have a go at the casino. After clearing it with the central office I said sure and I returned a $100 lighter in the pocket. Not bad for two days worth of craps, blackjack and roulette.

I want to thank everyone that voted for my car at BCD. Third place was a great honor and I know that customs and conversions don't rank high on a lot of peoples' lists, I am glad that there is a segment that does appreciate the hard work that goes into a car, no matter what the ultimate configuration looks like. That's the great thing about car shows, there's something for everyone.

It was a beautiful morning on Saturday, May 15 and I was onthe road early to Berry College in Rome for theBritish Motorcar Day; even a little cool as I drove with the topdown (too bad that didn’t last all day). I didn’t see a singleother British car on my drive to the show and I started to get a little nervous that perhaps I had the days mixed up. But as I got in sight of Berry College I joined up with a few other participants so figured I had the day right after all.

After going through registration I met some fellow GTA members on the field. Mike and Sue Hurst had been up early to deliver materials for our tents, as was Gary Wilmerding. Sue made the comment that it doesn’t take too long to set up because they have a lot of practice. (And all the club members appreciate them taking on such an important task.) I pitched in to drop off ballots for the GTA voting for best Triumph in specific groups and best in show—each car got only one ballot to avoid any chicanery with stuffing the ballot box.

I was a little concerned that the field would be muddy from the recent heavy rains but it was in great shape as cars were parked in their respective groups. And it didn’t take long for the temperature and humidity to climb to summer levels. Participants came in right up to noon and by my count we had 55 Triumphs all told. Around that time our barbeque lunch was delivered so I took a break from ballot delivery to have a tasty lunch.

Perhaps the happiest participant of the day was Susan Ferguson, in their new (to them) TR8. She was so excited to be at an event in a working Triumph—and a spacious, comfortable one at that. Earl still has his project car, but now we are likely to see them on the road in their new purchase. Congratulations, Earl and Susan!!

I needed to get back home so I left the show just as the winners were being decided. The skies looked threatening at times but it never rained on me—in fact I got a bit sunburned despite having on sunscreen. All in all it was a nice day spending time with fellow Triumph enthusiasts and taking a drive with the top down.

I encourage you to join us at the GTA events, but you don’t need to wait for a club event to go for a drive. Every sunny day is a chance to enjoy a bit of motoring.

Hope to see you on down the road.

Do you own a British car? Of course you do or you would not be reading this newsletter. Do you have problems with your British car? Of course you do, it is British isn't it? Do you want great repairs at reasonable prices? Of course you do, we all do.

Well, by now you all know I am back repairing old British cars in a very convenient location. 1666 Whitlock Road, off of Sandy Plains Road about 1/4 mile from Sprayberry High School and my labor rate is only $55.00 per hour. It has not changed since scientists proved that black holes exist and O.J. was falsley accused of murder. That is almost 15 years ago. I can do almost two hours work for most other shops 1hours worth.

I have been a Moss distributor and customer since 1973. My customer number with them is still my old original shop phone number; that is how long I have been dealing with Moss Motors. I order most of my parts from them and when the parts are for your car, I split my discount with them with you. Now their discount is not that great, 30% at most, but I take my cost and add the list cost then divide by two. I make a few dollars and you save a few. As an example, a Borg & Beck clutch lists for $172.95 and my last cost was $121.07. I charged $147.01 for it. I think that is fair to both of us. I have over 35 years experience working on old Briish cars. They weren't old when i started working on them. I know what makes them tick, click, purr and growl. Any problem can be solved. Noisy differentials, slipping clutches, shorting electrics or poor running, nothing is too small or too large. I have seen and repaired everything that can go wrong at least once. I have installed hundreds of convertible tops, built hundreds of engines and transmisions; you name it and I have probably repaired it. So if you need any help, please give me a call at 770-689-7573 and let us discuss your problems. There is never, nor has there ever been a charge for talking (and I am quite good at that). I am always wiling to offer my help or advice when you call.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. -Barry Rosenberg

I have a number of TR-3 parts that are being removed from my TR-2 as part of restoration. Also lots of other spares from many years of collecting TR-2/3 stuff. I'm working on a list and prices, but don't have that yet. Call for what you need. Here are some samples:

TR-3 front apron. Good condition, just removed. With or without associated hardware (chrome letters, TR-3 hood support, Cross bar). No TR badge; Oil cooler, nearly new from Moss. I can't figure out how fit on the TR-2 apron!, so it needs to go!; Tail light assemblies, good shape, but TR-2s are different; Transmissions (2), non O/D;

Some competition parts from the 1960s, G4 cam, competition front springs, NOS - never installed;Engine parts, you name it.

I am writing this right after British Car Day and I want to congratulateeveryone on a great show. I did not see any cars broken down onthe way there or home and that is the best news. The weather godsgave us a fine day for the show and I know we all appreciated that.

As a lot of you know, Patty and I have been building our own log cabin for the past several years and now we are about to move into it full time. I am not moving my shop to Talking Rock as I know it is too far to drive but will open a new location in the Marietta-Canton area, close to where I am now. I put a flyer in some cars at the show and hope you either keep them for the map and phone number or dispose of them properly.

My articles are mostly based on problems I see while working on customer cars and this one is the same. Some times the problems are caused by the owners but this one was not. There was nothing the owner could have done to stop this from happening. Actually, I am not exactly sure what did happen.

Usually, when there is a problem, the cause can be found after disassembly of the related parts. But not this time. The problem is cured but I cannot say exactly why it occurred. The problem was a massive oil leak from a MGB.

No jokes here please about it leaked because it had oil in it or any of the other leaky British car jokes. This car ran fine, so fine it was driven to Chris Gore’s spring outing and all was good. However, somewhere along the ride, it sprang an oil leak, almost as large as what is in the Gulf right now.

When I looked at the car in Marietta, we cranked it up and watched oil come out of the drain in the bellhousing like you were pouring it out of the bottle. We shut it off and I had someone else look under as I re-cranked it. Again, it poured out the oil. It would start leaking as soon as it cranked up, what could cause that big of a leak?

The MGB engine has a nicely designed rear rubber lip crank seal held into a 3/8” thick back plate by a steel retainer. I have seen the seal pop out the bottom of the retainer, but only once before. And that did not leak like this one did. I checked for too much back pressure internally as the vent system was slightly restricted but it had no more than normal.

That eliminated thinking about a broken ring or piston from causing the leak. Either broken item would have caused combustion pressure getting into the oil pan and creating way too much back pressure. This could cause the oil to be blown out the weakest seal or gasket. We decide to pull the engine and see if the seal was in place.

I’ll be darned. It was in place with the retainer still there. But you could see that there was a trail of oil coming from the seal. We pulled the clutch and found it not only oil soaked but degrading and shredding apart from the hot oil. What could cause this? We removed the clutch assembly and flywheel next. Minutes from GTA meeting 5/18/2010Submitted by Michael Campsmith, GTA Secretary/Activities Director

19 members and guests and 9 Triumphs attend the May meeting of the GTA.

Meeting was called to order by Director Jim Orr at 7:10 PM.

Treasurer’s report (Sue Hurst)—The club added about $341.00 in April and ended the month with approximately $3600.00 in the bank. Joe Earnest sold lots of merchandise at the British Motorcar Day (see below) so likely that amount will increase.

Web site (Toby Holden)—The GTA website received an award from the Vintage Triumph Registry as an outstanding website. The thanks go to Toby for his imaginative work to keep the website attractive and informative. If you send articles or pictures he can post them as well.

Newsletter (Tony Graham)—Please send articles, etc. for inclusion in the newsletter. Editor is always accepting content and may use for future newsletters.

Activities (Michael Campsmith)—

The vintage Walter Mitty races were held April 29 through May 2 at Road Atlanta. The weather was mostly good and the racing action was excellent, due to groups being combined and more cars on the track at the same time.

British Motorcar Day at Berry College, Saturday, May 15—the Triumph marque was represented by 55 cars; total participants was estimated to be around 250. The weather was beautiful and in fact it got rather hot as the day went on. Voting was held for each model, with Boy Scouts enlisted to settle ties. Plaques were awarded down to third place in each group, and some winners left before getting their plaques. Hermann and Jeri Schaller won Best Triumph with their 1948 2000 Roadster (who could have guessed?).

Gary Wilmerding (Membership Director) said we had 4 or 5 new members join, which is quite a few less than in years past. People speculated that the threat of rain again kept attendance down; it also may be fewer people attend now that the show is farther from Atlanta than it was at Chateau Elan. Regardless, the barbeque lunch was tasty and the cars were well displayed around the field.

Finally, I want to congratulate Earl and Susan Ferguson on their newly acquired TR8. Susan had to be the happiest participant at the show, as they were actually able to drive up in a working Triumph. We hope to see them and their car at many future events.

VTR Triumphest 2009 - Notice of Problem with Trophies

Hello everyone.

By now VTR-Triumphest-2009 is a warm memory that you think about every time you look at that awesome glass trophy you won. Just to let you know that there have been reports that the batteries in the lighted base may leak. The leaking batteries can damage the internal components. So, please take a look at the battery compartment of your trophy and remove or replace the old batteries today.

The website is still up and running. As long as you're traveling down memory lane, check out the site. http://vtr-triumphest-2009.com

Have a great summer!

Jim FunkhouserCommunications DirectorVTR-Triumphest 2009

Lifting up on the back of the crank with a large screwdriver, I got several thousandths movement. Were the main bearings so bad the crank was moving around in the seal? This could cause the leak, so off came the pan and the main bearings which, frankly, were not that worn. Copper was just starting to show on the bearings, but not enough to cause the oil leak. I pulled the back plate and found nothing out of normal other than the cam had been moving back some and hitting the back plate, as that thing is 3/8” thick there is no way the cam could distort it.

This was all very strange. Everything that would or could cause this big of a leak looked ok. All I could think to do was re-assemble the engine with new seals and gaskets. I pulled the front and put new seals and gaskets and cam retainer there. While I was in there, I pulled the rod bearings for a look.

They were worn down to the point they needed replacing. I replaced the rod, and main bearings, the thrust washers as well as the rear seal and back plate gasket. I also checked the oil pump and packed it with Vaseline and checked the pressure relief valve. Then added a new clutch unit and back went the engine into the car.

We got everything connected and bolted in place and cranked it up, after putting oil in of course. No oil leak! What did I fix? I really cannot say that the seal was that bad as it was still plyable and in good condition. The main bearings were not that bad and there was no excessive internal pressure. This is one of the mysteries of British Cars. Oil leaks for no apparent reason. But, now the car runs better than ever and there are no leaks, so far. Hope to see ya'll soon.

Barry

Upcoming events:

Saturday, May 29—Greenville British Car show and Highland Games. This is held in Greenville, South Carolina and is sponsored by the Furman University sports car association. Prince Edward from the British Royal family is scheduled to attend, so mind your manners. Hermann Schaller will be going up; contact him if you want to caravan for his overnight trip or else meet him at the show.

Sunday, June 6—Allure of the Automobile at the High Museum. This show is a display of 18 automotive works of art. GTA members will meet at the box office around 1 PM to see the show, then perhaps have lunch together someplace. If you order tickets online (www.high.org) you can get a $6.00 discount off the $18.00 ticket price by typing ATXMEMBER in the promotion code space. This discount is courtesy of AutoTraderClassics.com; I spoke with their rep at British Car Day and she gave me the secret.

Saturday, June 13—Murder Mystery Rallye, put together by Hermann and Jeri Schaller. Hermann needs a count of attendees as soon as possible; email him at [email protected] or call 770-559-8365. People from the MG club will also be there so Hermann has put out the challenge to see which club is most clever at solving the mystery.

June 18-20—Classic Car Show and Races at Road Atlanta. This was originally sent to me as the First annual Concours D’Elegance. But on checking the website it is now listed as a classic car show—not sure if there will be any/many British cars there. Registration information and participant parking fees are on their website: http://www.southeastwheelsevents.com/events.

Your activities director is looking for events to fill up the summer. Oftentimes we head indoors when the weather gets hot, so perhaps a bowling night is in order; and if you have a pool or lake house let us know and we will be happy to help you enjoy them.

Guests in attendance—JM and Nona Patterson were there in their 1968 TR 250. We hope they will consider joining the club.
