The Holiday season is almost upon us, and even if we don’t manage to get away this year, holidays are a welcome break from the pressure or drudgery of routine. Our secular society m e a s u r e s t i m e i n language that echoes its Chr ist ian her i tage - hol idays rather than holy days, weekends rather than Sabbath and Lord’s Day, and festivals like Christmas and Easter, even if they rarely involve church or worship. It also drives us not to ‘waste time’, but to fill every waking hour with work or leisure.

But the bible reminds us that time is part of God’s creation and he invites us to share his eternal rest with a weekly Sabbath. It is an act of faith in God, to trust that he will provide all we need, even if we stop working. It is an act of love to our neighbour, our children and those who work for us not to require them to be available to meet our needs at any hour. and the fear of death. We remember his victory by keeping his day, the day of resurrection as the Lord’s Day, in the same spirit as our sabbath, not as a burden but as a gift and blessing.

As we emerge from lockdown let us keep the day holy, by setting aside the time to watch a service online or coming back to church., and keeping that habit on holiday as well as at home.

GARDEN GROUP SERVICE for the week of Sunday 19 July (6th Sunday after Trinity)

Please be careful to observe the government’s regulations on a maximum of 6 people gathering outdoors, and maintaining 2 metre social distance. It is best to bring your own chairs, or if using the furniture of someone else to wash or wipe down surfaces before and after the gathering. If you share refreshments, please do not pass cups and plates to one another, but collect them from a common table. We recommend that each person brings their own bible, and prints a copy of this service order. It may be helpful for one person to lead or facilitate the group, so that you don’t get stuck in discussions that distract from the aim of worship and prayer. Why not make a habit of meeting on Sunday, or any day of the week?

Opening Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you.     This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm: this week’s psalm 34: read together if you have the same version or read one verse in turn.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen

Question: do you long or dread (or both) going back to meeting in a church building?

Bible reading: Matthew 6.25-7.12 Don’t worry- consider the Lord

Questions for discussion

What lesson does Jesus want us to learn from considering the birds?

What lesson does Jesus want us to learn from considering the flowers/lilies?

How should we consider our relationship with God? How it different to that of birds and flowers?

What does it mean to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness?

Who should we not judge - and why?

What lesson should we learn from our children in how to pray?

A simple Creed:

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of Godand makes Christ known in the world? We believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God,Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

We want to encourage people to gather again for public worship in our church buildings, but the threat to health from the COVID outbreak remains real: IF YOU OR SOMEONE I N Y O U R H O U S E H O L D I S E X P E R I E N C I N G C O V I D - l i k e SYMPTOMS, PLEASE RETURN HOME and ask for a test. If you are meant to be self-isolating, please wait till the isolation period has ended.

Those aged 70 and over are advised they should take particular care to minimise contact with others outside their household, and should be careful to maintain social distance from others.

The current government advice can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do

What does this mean for PPT? We have marked pews that can be used by individuals or family groups and safely maintain a social distance of 2 metres (this means two empty pews between every pew used). This greatly reduces the seating capacity of the church. We also want to prevent queues from forming outside. We therefore request that you reserve a pew in advance by phoning Mr Roy White, our church warden, on 01626 832771, to book for the Wednesday service, or Mark Sugden in the office (834835) for the Sunday service. If you have not reserved a seat for a service, you may need to wait outside until the steward is able to allocate you a space. If there are no spaces at this service the steward will take your name and reserve a seat for you at our next scheduled service.

We are required to ask you for a name and contact number to assist NHS Track & Trace, but under GDPR legislation you are not legally obliged to provide it, nor may we refuse you entry for this reason.

We have established a one-way system through the church. Unless you are disabled, please use the South Porch Door to enter, and the west tower door to leave. Please sanitise your hands when you enter and leave.

You will find a service order and bible readings in the pew. Please leave the service order behind when you leave. You are encouraged to bring your own bible, as the church bibles and hymn books have been stored away, along with all soft toys.

There will be music at the Sunday service, but you are asked not to sing- you can hum along if you wish! You may wish to wear a face mask, but this is not (yet)required. At communion the minister will come to each pew to distribute the bread. He will wear a mask, and will drop the wafer into your hand. Neither he nor you should speak while in close proximity.

You are asked to leave the service promptly, while respecting social distance. Please don’t linger, and block the way for others to leave. If you want to catch up with friends, please do so outside in the fresh air, in small groups maintaining social distance.

There will be a collection plate by the tower exit, and a contactless card machine if you wish to give.

We have not yet opened the church room toilets for use at services.
