TEACHERS’ MANUAL for the BY MYSELF Skill Bookletto Accompany the GINN BASIC READING PROGRAM

for the Third Reader I, Revised Edition

The By Myself Skill Booklets have been developed to sup-plement and reinforce the skills presented in the Ginn BasicReading Program. As their title suggests, these booklets aredesigned to be used independently by pupils along with their

regular class work. By means of the unique self-correctional

feature of the Skill Booklets, pupils can work by themselvesand have immediate knowledge of their success.

It is an accepted fact that learning is more likely to result

when the pupil actively participates in the learning task, thatis, when he supplies frequent active responses to material. It

is important the pupil be informed of his success in accom-plishing his objectives as he proceeds. The more immediatethe confirmation or correction, the better the pupil learns andthe longer he remembers. This is the fundamental principle

of learning known as “immediate reinforcement.”The By Myself Skill Booklets utilize a format and design

especially created to include these features. In this way, theSkUl Booklets provide a new dimension in educational mate-rials—one which is ideally suited to the reading program.

I

gradually, words. There is thus accomplished a meaningfqcombination of auditory perception, visual discrimination,

and kinesthetic experience. From the beginning, the child is

expected to repeat names of key pictures and words he rec-

ognizes and to relate the known elements of words to any hedoes not know so as to increase his phonetic and structural

power and build his basic reading vocabulary. As a conse-

quence, the skill of reading is reinforced by activities in listen-

ing and by a sequentially developed writing program.

The reading comprehension program of the By MyselfSkill Booklets builds progressively through the series. Simplesentences relating to picture clues become gradually morechallenging with the addition of questions for the child to

answer only after he has been led to think about what he has

seen and read. Directions for completing pages offer practice

in reading to follow directions. The meaning of new words

attacked through phonetic and structural analysis is checked

by requiring the use of these words in sentences or bysentence comprehension. Other exercises provide practice

in following story sequence, drawing conclusions, noting

details, recognizing the main idea, and classifying.

Special Features

Relation to the Ginn Basic Reading ProgramSince the content of the Skill Booklets is closely coordi-

nated with that of the Ginn Basic Reading Program, pupHs who have used parts of that program will benefit

through additional practice skills already presented. Thosechildren who have not used the Ginn Basic Readers,Revised, will benefit from the word-study program set forth

sequentially in the Booklets. The Skill Booklets may there-

fore be used directly with the Ginn Basic Reading Programor as an independent supplement to other basic readingprograms.

Content and Emphasis

Special emphasis is given in the Skill Booklets to the pho-netic and structural approaches to words. The teaching of

these elements frequently requires the greatest concentration

and repetition by the teacher. By using the Skill Booklets, the

children will receive additional instruction without placing anadded burden on the teacher.

A The writing skills program for the By Myself Skill Book-ts provides opportunity for the child to write letters and,

I j© Cop3rright 1963, by Ginn and

There are ten outstanding features of the By Myself Skill

Booklets. Each is complementary to important features andpurposes of the Ginn Basic Reading Program.1. Emphasis is on the basic phonetic and structural word-

study skills. Skills are presented in small steps, easy for

pupils to understand.

2. Pupils can work independently in the building of their

reading skills.

3. Opportunity is provided for pupils to make active re-

sponses at each step. Writing, as well as auditory per-

ception, is called for throughout.

4. Pupils are given immediate knowledge of results and are

thus always informed of their progress.

5. Each pupil proceeds at his own best pace.

6. Emphasis is given to the skill of writing to reinforce word-study skills. Pupils practice the formation of letters and,

gradually, the construction of words in context.

7. Pupils have an opportunity to increase their reading andwriting vocabularies.

8. The teacher’s time is extended because the Skill Booklets

act as a teacher’s aid. r- -a”ft

9. The size and format of the Skill Booklets are especially

appealing to children.

10. The Skill Booklets are highly adaptable to the regular

classroom procedure, since pupils may use them inde-

pendently.

Format and Use

The unique format of the By Myself SkiU Booklets for

grades 1-3 is the insertion of a half sheet between every twopages. At the outer edge of each page is a gray circle whichoverlaps the full page and the half page. When the half pageis down in position, the full circle is completed. It is impor-tant that the pupil always make the full circle before starting

to work on a page. The pupil is instructed by material on the

upper portion of each fuU page. He then responds to the exer-

cise material on the half page which lies over the lower por-

tion of the fuU page.

The inserted half page is always used as the work page.

It also covers the correct “answers” to which the child canrefer for confirmation. When he has completed working withthe material on the half page, he immediately looks under-neath to see the correct version of the work he has done. Inthis manner he checks his own work and then corrects it

by himself.

It is essential that the child use the SkiU Booklet with theproper attitude toward self-correctional work. The SkiU Book-let is not a test. It is a means for learning independently. Theonly check-up of performance comes in the Review Tests in

each booklet on pages 24, 25, and 48, which the teacher mustcorrect. The pupil should reaUze that his work on these pagesindicates how well he has mastered the skills on precedingpages.

A question may arise because the correct responses maybe seen by the pupil before he does his work. The arrange-

ment is intentional. Additional evidence from research in

learning indicates that if the child “peeks ahead” at the cor-

rect response before he makes his own response, there is nosignificant difference in the amount of learning that occurs.

Extensive field tests with these Booklets indicate that, onceprimary chUdren understand the purpose of the self-operating

half pages, they can easUy manage the operation of the pages.

Furthermore, chUdren are highly motivated by the formatof the Booklets. Each chUd can set his best working pace for

himself. The fact that it is unnecessary to wait for the teacher

to correct a page helps to estabUsh self-reUance and independence in reading and writing. ChUdren are proud to shovwhat they have accomplished on their own.

The teacher should impress upon pupils that pages 24, 25and 48 are different from the rest of the pages in the BookletOn pages 24 and 25 there is no half sheet and no answers wil

be found. Page 48 has a half page, but no answers are provided. After completing these pages, the pupil must checlwith the teacher.

Recommendations for Optimum Use in the Classroom

The foUowing steps are recommended for the optimum use

of the By Myself SkiU Booklets in the classroom:

1. Review the Booklet carefuUy before class presentationnoting the content, its sequence, and the nature of th<

tasks the pupil will perform.

2. Introduce the Booklet during or after the Third ReadeiI Program.

3. Introduce the Booklet to smaU groups so that aU pupikunderstand the operation of the pages and half sheets.

4. Emphasize the importance of reading and completingcarefuUy the material on the top half of the page before

attempting to work on the half sheet.

5. Explain fuUy the nature of the self-correctional features ol

the Booklet. Emphasize that each pupU can be his ownteacher. Reassure pupUs that checking their own work is

important in working with these Booklets, but that theyshould try to do each page first, then check and make their

own corrections.

6. Limit working time each day to 10-20 minutes. Pupilsshould understand that speed is not necessarUy of benefit

in working with the Booklets. Of course, they should notdelay unnecessarUy but should be encouraged to work at

their own best pace.

7. Emphasize that the only pages to be checked by theteacher are in the center of the Booklet (pages 24 and 25)

and at the end (page 48). Careful work by pupils on other

pages wiU help them do better on the review pages.

Directions for Introducing the By Myself SkiU Booklet

1. Show the Booklet to the groups or individual who wilf

be using it. /

Page 9: The Ginn Basic Readers: Finding New Neighbours - By Myself ...€¦ · PE 1121 G49 1861 gr«3 gr.3 bk.1 suppl tch•m CUERHIST *,/;TOAGCCMPANY TheBasicReadingProgram NEIGHBORS REVISEDEDITION

2. Explain that, though the Booklet is different, the contents

are familiair.

3. Demonstrate the use of the covering half page.

4. Instructions to the pupil are:

a. Make a full gray circle by putting down the half page.

b. When you have made a full circle, look at the top of the

page, and read what is there, and complete the workby tracing over aU dotted letters and words.

c. Do the work on the half page.

d. After you have finished working on the half page, lift it

up to check your work underneath.

e. Make corrections as needed.

A principal feature of the Skill Booklet is the special oper-

ation of the pages. Once the pupil understands how to make

j

the fuU gray circle by putting down the half page he can then

I

proceed to work independently. Guidance by the teacher dur-jing work on the first few pages will ensure smooth operation.

'

Special Notes for By Myself, Third Reader I

There are two principal features to be emphasized when)the By Myself Skill Booklet for the Third Reader I is

introduced to pupils:

1(1) The operation of the pages may be new to children, buti they will quickly understand it after practicing with the

first pages. Once a child has made the full gray circle by1 putting down the half page, he will know that the pageI is ready for study and writing. Guidance by the teacher

I

during work on the first few pages will ensure smooth

I

operation.

(2)

The content requires written responses to fill in letters

or words in blank spaces and to trace over dotted letters

or words.

I

This Booklet uses thirteen terms outside the Ginn ThirdReader I vocabulary. They appear on the following pages:ifcfe (2), examples (6), chance (11), web (25), cylinder (26),

MU (30), lose (32), plug (33), choose (33), divided (38),

\]^rtune (40), mammals and lungs (41). The teacher may wishIP present these words before the pupil works independently,’he pupil can use phonetic elements from each page to

ttack additional new words appearing in the responses.

Content and Purposes of Pages, By Myself, Third Reader I

In addition to the listed purposes, every page requires

writing. The use of context clues to complete sentences is

required on many pages. Every page requires following

printed directions. Every page also presents and practices

sight vocabulary.
