A Message from the Rector The Rev. F. Wilson Brown

Dear friends in Christ,There has been a lot of discus-sion in our culture about whatis true and what is not. Thepoem to the right continues tobe a good reminder.

What we know, what we think, and what we fill our minds withmatters. It is worthwhile to

learn some things so well that we know them byheart.

Long before I thought I might be a preacher Istarted collecting sayings, quotes, and stories. Thehabit has served me well in preaching but it hasserved me even better in giving me good stuff tothink about. Here are a few of the quotes I first collected in 8th Grade:

“You can’t build a reputation on what you’regoing to do.” ~Henry Ford

“Every man has a right to his opinion, but noman has a right to be wrong in his facts.”

~Bernard Baruch

(To this day I equate spin doctoring and simple lying. Please just tell me the truth as best as it is known.)

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

“It is the heart that is not yet sure of its God that is afraid to laugh in His presence.”

~George McDonnel

I know these by heart. I have shared them with myfamily and friends. They frame the way I thinkabout things. I believe these “thoughts” help me tobe a better man.

Our faith and worship life commend us to learnsome thoughts by heart. Rite I is particularlystrong in teaching by repetition of some essentials.

We start with the Summary of the Law (BCP p. 324).Immediately after confession and absolution wehear the “comfortable words”, four sentences fromscripture including the ubiquitous John 3:16 (butit is still one of the best one-sentence summaries ofthe Good News).

It is worthwhile to know these things by heart. Theyframe the way we approach our faith and our world.

Every week we recite the Nicene Creed. TheCreed has been the definitive statement of thefaith of the Church since the 4th Century. TheApostles Creed is even older. Both creeds statestrongly what we do and do not believe about Godas revealed in Jesus Christ Our Lord. We repeatthe Creed with the intention that it will becomepart of us and part of the formation of our faith.

In the conclusion of his letter to the PhilippiansPaul writes; “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever ispure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commend-able, if there is any excellence and if there is any-thing worthy of praise, think about these things.”Another good quote worth knowing and living.

Your brother in Christ,—Wilson+

Junior Warden’s Report: Jim Towner reportedthat he had obtained a second estimate for the out-side repairs to the building. That estimate was 2.5times the original estimate. He recommends goingwith the original bid.

Perhaps more training orbetter hardware. He noted that Mike Rieley had resigned as acolytechair. No one is filling that role at this time. Henoted that the majority of St. John’s acolytes will beleaving in the next few years, so some changes mayneed to take place in scheduling acolytes. He also noted the need for an open liturgy meetingto plan for the upcoming seasons. He will work onthat with Cathey Burks. The Bower Center has offered their facility free ofcharge to St. John’s in appreciation for our assis-tance with several of their summer programs. The backpack program went well, and the spaceworked very well. The organizers of that programhope to use St. John’s space again next year.Planning for community disaster relief came up dur-ing the recent walk thorough with the DiocesanSafety Manager. Wilson asked the Vestry to thinkabout ways in which St. John’s could serve in case ofcommunity disaster.

New Business• Easter Flower overage: The overage was designat-ed for use by the Altar Guild.• Doris Handy Funds: The funds should stay avail-able in the checking account given the upcomingimminent restoration project.

Some years ago, someone said to me, “If you everneed a hand, just ask. I have two of them.” It turnedout I did not need a hand at that time and I did notask for help but I do not doubt the sincerity of theoffer and I still remember the expression. I have nodoubt if I called this woman today, even thoughmuch time has passed, she would still make aneffort to help. She is just that kind of person.

Lending a hand can be hard. It can be inconvenient. It can be more of a commitment than we reallymeant to make. But here’s the thing, little things domean a lot. You don’t have to take on the entireburden. No one really expects that. But they doneed a hand, some little sign that somebody cares.

God's Pit Crew makes it easy foreach of us to lend a hand. You don’thave to fill the whole warehouse inDanville. You don’t even have todrive the truck packed with suppliesto the site of the disaster. What youare asked to do, if you can, is fill one

bucket. They even give you a list of what to get.Okay, you do have to go to a dollar store or toWalmart. You do have to spend some money, butnot really all that much. Just ask someone who haslost everything in a fire or a flood or in a tornado. They will tell you little things do mean a lot. Havinga toothbrush may not sound like much, until youdon’t have one. The same is true of shampoo, disin-fectant wipes, a package of nabs, some toilet paper. It seems like a minor thing until you need it.

Girl Scout Troop 525 makes it even easier to lend ahand. If you will use a hand to write a check for $35made out to St. John's with a notation of “BlessingBuckets”, the scouts will do the shopping and pack-ing for you.

Disasters will continue to happen. You can be sureof that. There will be floods. There will be fires. There will be tornadoes and hurricanes. But there isstill time to help. We still have buckets to distribute. They are available in the Parish Hall after churchand are not due back until September 17, 2017.

Someday you may be watching the evening newsand see a big truck with “God's Pit Crew” embla-zoned on the side, pulling out from the warehousein Danville and it will be heading off to the site of adisaster and you will know that truck is fully loadedwith supplies because you filled a blessing bucket. You lent a hand. If you have questions see KathieChilders or call her at 586-6209.
