This year marks the 99th anniversary of the signing of the armistice and the end of the fighting in the first World War. At 11am on the 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front in France and Belgium fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

The armistice ended World War I and came into force, bringing to an end four years of hostilities that saw 61 919 Australians die at sea, in the air, and on foreign soil. Few Australian families were left untouched by the events of World War I - In ‘the war to end all wars’ most had lost a father, son, daughter, brother, sister or friend. It has become a universal tradition to pause at 11am on 11 November, to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts and all those who have served during the time since.

2017 marks the 99th anniversary of the final battles of the First World War. Australian forces taking key roles in the allied successes of the last four months of the war.

On Friday 10 November, the Gleeson Community gathered to commemorate Remembrance Day. The commemoration was held on the Trinity Lawns opposite the College’s Memorial. Once again, we were very fortunate to have a Catafalque Party and bugler in attendance, as well as the opportunity to hear from special guest speaker, Lieutenant Mitchell McDermott, who shared with us his experiences of life as a member of the Australian Defence Force. Additionally, during the commemoration, student representatives from all Care Groups placed a candle of Remembrance at the memorial.

WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO BE!

Transition DaysOn Tuesday and Thursday, we held transition days for students that will be joining Gleeson College in 2018 in Year 7 and Year 8. These days are always very special and the school had a great buzz of anticipation, excitement and energy. This is just one aspect of our commitment to ensuring that new students to our school are fully supported in their transition from primary to secondary education. The days enable our new students to begin to become familiar with the geography of the College, and to hear about and understand those things that are important to being a Gleeson College student. A very special aspect of both the days was a concluding liturgy and ‘Rite of Initiation’ ceremony for our inaugural Year 7 students. I thank all of the staff involved in the organisation and facilitation of these days, in particular to Mrs Amanda Price, our Leader of Community Engagement and Innovation, who works tirelessly to ensure that the whole transition process is a success.

Thursday was such a vibrant day with the transition day for our new Year 8 students, the STEM Expo in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre, a High tea prepared by our Year 11’s and various PE Week activities. What a great place to be!

College Board AGMNext Wednesday we have the College Board AGM to be held in our newly refurbished Faulkner Building. Our guest speakers will be a number of current Year 8 students who will be reflecting on their first year at Gleeson College. The AGM also features reports from members of the Board and Leadership Team regarding the activities of the Board over the past 12 months. It would be wonderful to see many of you at the AGM.

Remembrance Day We held a very special Remembrance Day service last Friday. One of the many gifts of belonging to the Gleeson College community is to witness the way that our students participate in significant events. Our students are always respectful and engaged. Thanks in particular to Mrs Kate Pill, for her amazing energy and enthusiasm in preparing such a moving service to

commemorate the end of hostilities on the Western Front 99 years ago.

Prayer for ExaminationsYear 12 students are currently in the throes of their final assessments including examinations, and our Year 11 students will begin these soon. This can be a particularly difficult and stressful time for young people and families so I offer this prayer below as a support at this time.

Loving Godbe with me now, as I prepare for

my exams.Thank you for the many talents

and gifts you have given me and for the opportunity of education.

Calm my nerves and anxiety, help me to remember all that I have studied,to express it clearly and to answer

the questions the very best that I can.Holy Spirit, sit with me in my exam –

and always.Together we pray: With One Heart

Amen

in which they participated in this conversation. It was indeed proof that learning in a school occurs not only within a traditional classroom context, but also in a variety of places and spaces.

Finally, I would like to commend our entire student cohort for the respectful way with which they participated in the important part of Australia’s history. They continue to make me proud to be a member of the Gleeson community.

As a community we recognise the contribution that the Australian

Defence Force has made in the past, the present and into the future.

“They shall grow not old,as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them,

nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun

and in the morning We will remember them.”

GC DANCERS BRING HOME MEDAL STASH FROM SCHOOL AEROBICS COMP!Gleeson College Dancers competing in the School Aerobics Spring Event in the Dance Star Sections at King’s Baptist Grammar School on November 5. We had a record number of entries this year with the introduction of the ‘Up Tempo’ and ‘Down Tempo’ Solo sections to the competitions.

Gleeson entered the Secondary Jazz Section with a small team, choreographed and directed by Year 9 dancer Chelsea Schwarz (9 HMCRE). The routine choreographed to Sam Sparro’s song “Black and Gold” was a great way to start the Gleeson entries and some of the lyrics helped to inspire our prayer before entering the stage. Aptly, Gleeson won Gold for this section! Special mention and thanks goes to Abigail Cottrell (9 HMTOU) and Arieta Rokosawa (9 DMJEF) who learned the routine in just two days and did a great job filling in for us. Our Duo and Trio entries were competing against each other, and teams from other schools, in a range of genres. The key for this category was to dance the style chosen with conviction and to move in unison with each other. Brea Hurst (9 DMCUR) and Phoebe Surman (9 MMCIV) choreographed a Lyrical routine to “The Story Never Ends” that took out the Gold in this section, and Silver went to the energetic Hip Hop trio of Emily Papalia (9 DMMCC), Chelsea Rulla (9 MMBON) and Chelsea Schwarz, performing to a mash up of songs.

The most hotly contested section of the day was the’ Down Tempo’ Solo program. Emily Papalia choreographed a creative Gold medal winning Solo to a Beyonce number, and special mention in fourth place goes to Sarah McIver (8 DMCUR) for her beautiful solo choreography to the haunting Lord Huron song “The Night We Met”. The other new section for this year was the ‘Up Tempo’ Solos. Chelsea Schwarz was outstanding and won Gold for her routine to Sia track “Move Your Body”.

We took home a medal for each section entered! Most importantly, the dancers represented Gleeson College impeccably and I was so proud of the way they worked together, supported each other and displayed such congeniality toward the other teams competing. Well done GC Dancers and thank you for your talent and professionalism.

What an amazing experience for one of our new Gleeson College Year 7 footballers! Alfie Nayler (Year 7 2018) was lucky to be selected as the Watford FC mascot in their English

Premier League clash against Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge in London on October 21.

Before the game, Alfie (pictured in red) had the opportunity to meet all the Watford players in person and also shook hands with all the Chelsea players prior to the opening whistle!

Congratulations to talented young GC footballers Alana Fitzsimmons (8 FMPAR) and Cooper Warren (8 MMMCL) on their recent selections in the South Australian 2018 U15 State Squads.

YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY > Exploring Travel Destinations + Flight Centre Visit

On Monday this week, Mr Hewson’s Year 9 Humanities Class were fortunate to be visited by Chelsie Cossens fromFlight Centre, Tea Tree Plaza, who shared her vast industry knowledge and expertise.

Students are currently investigating tourism, with a specific focus on sustainable tourism, and Chelsie was able to open their eyes to the various careers in tourism and the many joys of her job. The students asked about her career pathway to working for Flight Centre, which started with completing Year 12 and earning her SACE. Chelsie told us stories about

some of the more popular tourist destinations, as well as some hidden gems.

The students are preparing for an assignment that will require them to investigate a tourist destination and plan a holiday. Chelsie was able to bring travel brochures to help students to pick and investigate a number of gorgeous

locations. With a little luck, we may have some future travel experts amongst us.
