Our 2016 Middle School Regional Mass and Junior Relay for Life was a beautiful celebration, uniting all four Partner Catholic schools in faith last Wednesday.

The Mass, held in the morning, was a special event with Year 6 and 7 students from St Francis Xavier’s Regional Catholic School (Wynn Vale), Saint David’s Parish School (Tea Tree Gully) and Our Lady of Hope School (Greenwith), along with Gleeson Year 8 and 9 students, all participating in reverence. What a wonderful sight it was to see our schools united in faith! The fantastic affirmations from our guests for our amazing dancers, talented singers and musicians, organisation and respectful student involvement were most warmly received. Thank you to all students involved, and a special thank you to Mrs Dianne Deptula, Ms Rachel Staffin, Mrs Sally Parsons and Mrs Carly Meakin for all their assistance in making this Mass a vibrant, engaging celebration for our local Catholic community.

Following the Mass, we came together to share a meal. The buzz around the courtyard at lunchtime was phenomenal!

It was a joy to watch our students mix and mingle so effortlessly with the younger partner school students and to see siblings and family friends sharing lunch together. Staff from all schools happily interacted with students, with Gleeson staff meeting new students and the Primary school staff catching up with their Old Scholars.

Refuelled and ready to have some fun, our visiting Year 6 and 7 students and GC Middle School students then gathered on the oval to engage in our 2016 Junior Relay for Life. This event involves participants taking to the track to walk laps in memory of those we have lost to cancer, to celebrate those who have survived, and to share our hope for a cancer-free future. All who witnessed this colourful display of faith in action were rejuvenated by the spirit and enthusiasm shown by all students and staff involved. Seeing students from all four schools being active on our oval, walking laps, playing soccer, placing daffodils to spell out ‘HOPE’, throwing Frisbees, kicking the football, battling in tug-o-war, sack races and egg-and-spoon races, really captured the essence of the day – ‘Healing, Justice and Fighting Back’. All these students

form part of tomorrow’s leaders in cancer education, awareness and prevention.

A big thank you to the House Leadership Team, consisting of Mr Josh Boden, Mr Nathan Ackan, Mr Adrian Ranieri and Mr Steve Hicks, and Ms Kerri-Anne Freeth, Mr Rob Searle and Mr Allan Glover for all their work in setting up lunch and the Junior Relay for Life event. Thank you also to Cancer Council South Australia who came out to show support and was overwhelmed by the community spirit shown by all four schools. A final thank you to all the staff of the four Partner schools of the TTG Catholic community involved in this fantastic event.

‘HERE’S TO THE PRESENT > WHAT A TRUE GIFT IT IS!’

What a vibrant and energetic community it is at Gleeson College! Every day has been such a gift! It has been a delight to be involved in events and activities such as Homework Club and the inspiring Remembrance Day Ceremony held this morning. Incredibly moving!

The Memorial space outside the administration building is now complete with two statues of soldiers, set up by our maintenance team of Mr Robert Searle and Mr Allan Glover, already themselves part of the Gleeson community. I must mention the amazing Spring Fling High Tea (wow), most ably led by Miss Lisa Feleppa (and Ms Sarah Mahony who together run a fantastic Home Economics area). The Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class really shone! The venue was transformed into a very fancy space with flowers and table décor and impeccable service to

rival the best High Teas anywhere. The large number of invited guests were most impressed by the standard and quality of the treats offered; from Haloumi and Avocado Bruschetta, Cold Rolls, Satay Chicken Pies and Sweet Potato, and Pumpkin and Spinach Frittata... never mind the desserts!!!! Thank you to all involved. It was spectacularly good!

Greeting students in the mornings and afternoons I have a real sense of community, and I continue to be impressed with the genuinely happy and engaged young people, always offering a smile and a “hello”. This is a reflection of our parent community as well as the school culture. It is lovely to see so many parents at drop-off and pick-up times; we are blessed to be in partnership with families, and take this commitment very seriously.

We thank those parents who support the College by involving themselves in the College Parents and Friends’ Association,

led by Mrs Susan Smith. The group met this week and shared how they will run the BBQ for the upcoming Family Induction Night for our 2017 Year 8s. The group was abuzz with energy and fun! We are very grateful for their commitment and support, and acknowledge their significant contribution to Gleeson College life, and I look forward to supporting the work of this important group next year.

I was also delighted to be invited to visit the Year 8 RE Classes this week, where there was much conversation about the power of choices and their consequences. The students were assertive and attentive and respectful of each other and the nature of the sometimes sensitive topics. I saw values of forgiveness, mercy, integrity and respect; College values we would all hold dear.

Moderation Day was held this week also. It has become an annual day set aside for the purpose of refining and exploring professionally how we deliver the curriculum and ensure excellence as well as engagement for all students.

Of course this week also saw the Year 12 exams begin. Students can be proud of their approach and good preparation. We continue to keep them all in our prayers over the coming weeks as exams and final assessments are completed.

A friend recently encouraged me to read Eckhart Tolle’s ‘The Power of Now’. In it Tolle challenges conventional thinking by describing how intricately we are all connected, that life is only ever made up of right now (the notions of past and future belong with the ego, and are not actually tangible like the present is), and most powerfully he writes about enlightenment and how Jesus embodies this. “Enlightenment consciously chosen means to relinquish your attachment to past and future and to make the Now the main focus of your life. It means to dwell in the state of presence rather than in time. It means saying yes to what is,” (Tolle, 1999, p. 188).

Here’s to the present, what a true gift it is.

Have a blessed week!

2016 JUNIOR RELAY FOR LIFE > Celebrating Our Faith In Action Together

YEAR 11 CHILD STUDIES > Charity Bake for Fred’s Van

This week I had the opportunity to cook with Ms Mahony’s Year 11 Child Studies

Class and we made 130 muffins for Fred’s Van in Elizabeth. Fred’s Van provides a hot meal, fruit, drinks and blankets at eight sites across Adelaide, providing sustenance, warmth and comfort to

those less fortunate.

All students did an amazing job adapting a basic muffin mix to make a range of delicious sweet and savoury delights

for those who visit Fred’s Van. The girls are to be commended on the way they enthusiastically embraced this project;

displaying compassion through service to others and putting their faith into action.

If you would like more information on Fred’s Van, head to their website at:

GLEESON WINS INTERSTATE FUTSAL CHALLENGE TO MAKE IT A TREBLE!

Last Friday the Gleeson Year 8&9 Indoor Soccer Team took part in the Interstate Challenge held at Mars Stadium. The tournament was played against Blackfriars and St Monica’s College from Victoria.

In our first game, the boys played against St Monica’s in a highly intense match. In the first half we were down 2-0 after they had quickly capitalised on our defensive mistakes, but luckily we managed to work our way back into the game with quick goals from Morgan Evans (9 FMWIL) and Ryan Mayo (9 MMSCH). The second half continued to be an intense affair and St Monica’s managed to take control when they converted three goals to take the lead. We were getting closer to scoring by hitting the post multiple times, and we finally were able to hit the back of the net with goals from Tom Ayre (9 FMECO) and Cooper Nunn (9 MMMAH). A lot of good saves from super-keeper Robert Shyti (9 DMMCC) kept us in the game. The game finished a 5-5 draw.

In our second game against Blackfriars we needed to win to go straight to the final. Unfortunately we were not able to

perform our best and ended up losing 3-2. The boys knew that we were the better team and held our heads up and moved onto the Semi Final. Giovanny Gutierrez (9 DMJEF) put in a great performance during this match.

In the Semi Final we played St Monica’s again and started off well with a good strike from Nunn going in. We were also able to snare a good team goal, finished off by Ayre, taking our lead to 2-0. Going into the second half we kept the possession, passing up the pitch well and looked to keep the lead, but then St Monica’s hit back with a goal! In the final minute of the game they managed to get a goal back to be level 2-2 at the end of regular time. The game then went into extra time with a golden goal needed to win the game! Both teams played defensive in the first half of extra time and no goals were scored. Just when the game looked like going to penalties Mayo chipped a ball to Evans who smashed it into the bottom corner to score the winner in the last minute of the game. The crowd went wild as all the boys celebrated!

The Grand Final was played against

Blackfriars and we were able to dominate the whole game through good pressure and good passing. Goals from Lachlan Wallace (9 MMMAH), Evans, Ayre and a hat-trick from Mayo wrapped up a great day of Futsal. We managed to win 6-3 and yet again beat Blackfriars. We had won the treble (Year 8&9 KO Soccer, Year 8&9 KO Indoor Soccer & Interstate Challenge)!

A big thanks to Mr Vause for coaching us and supporting us this year and also thanks to Ms Staffin for her help. Well done to all the boys involved!

YEAR 11 FOOD & HOSPITALITY > Spring Fling High Tea Success!

I could not be more proud of the Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class and all their efforts in planning and presenting such an outstanding High Tea experience to

our invited guests this week!

Ms Lisa Feleppa,Year 11 Food & Hospitality Teacher

“Our group was in charge of cooking hot savoury food for the High Tea, as well as creating the invitations and the powerpoint presentation. We

cooked satay chicken, pumpkin soup, mini hamburgers and sweet potato & pumpkin frittatas. We found that this experience enabled us to form new

relationships with our peers and gain greater knowledge and skills that we can put into practice in the future.”

> Ashleigh Wilkey, Jade Bafile,Kelly Wilson, Aleisha Agostino &

Joshua Spence

“Our role for the High Tea was to create the sweet desserts, produce the recipe booklet and be in charge of the drinks service. We thoroughly enjoyed serving the invited guests,

along with the overall atmosphere of the room. Being able to put the skills we have learnt to the test, and to hear

the good feedback, made the day even more worthwhile.”

> Madeleine Reynolds, Georgia Beveridge, Molly Martin, Grace

O’Neill, Chandler May, Jordan Piles & Jessica Greet

“We were in charge of the cold savoury tier which included cold rolls,

halloumi and avocado bruschetta, melon and prosciutto skewers and pesto and feta bites. The high tea experience allowed us to develop both our cooking and hospitality

skills. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to cook for and serve our guests with delicious food. Our other group tasks were creating the menu, guest

feedback form and decorationswhich were all created to fit the

spring theme.”> Shenai Sanderson, Kelly Wilson,

Chewing Gum at Gleeson College

A reminder to parents to please have a conversation with your child/ren regarding Gleeson

College being a chewing gum free zone. There are WH&S concerns with chewing gum at school and

it also contributes to a significant litter concern when it is not disposed of appropriately.

I thank you for your supportwith the matter.
