Education Quotation of the Month
A teacher effects eternity; he can never tell
where his influence stops.
-- Henry Adams
GIS firmly believes that the way to make
happy and well adjusted students is to give
them a broad variety of experiences. To this
end we‟ve always been proud to provide mu-
sic education, and we‟re similarly proud to
announce that we are going to offer violin
classes once more.
Every Tuesday a professional music
teacher will come in to class to instruct the
children. There will be no cost to participate
in the class, however parents who wish their
children to participate must provide them with
a violin.
If you have any questions about this excit-
ing program, please contact the office.
For the past term we‟ve been thrilled to have
our students go to Piyarom Sports Club to swim
on Friday afternoons. And while the students
will continue to go to Piyarom those afternoons,
the program they will be attending is changing
for this term.
Friday afternoons interested Primary students
will be able to attend badminton lessons taught
by the coaching staff of Piyarom, free of charge.
As with the violin classes the only cost to par-
ents is the cost of equipment; each child who is
going to participate must bring their own racquet
to the class.
As with everything if you have any questions
about the program please contact the office.
New Programs Offered
Every month since the beginning of term 2 we‟ve tried to instill a separate virtue in the
children, with the goal of over the course of a year making them in to morally healthier and
better adjusted people. As we‟ve had honesty, love and obedience, the month of May will
be our month of kindness.
Over the course of the month we will have activities, discussions and presentations
about the benefits of kindness. We‟re hoping that you will similarly hold your own discus-
sions—in your homes—to help drive the point home. With all of us working together we
can ensure that our children are moral, virtuous and true.
Month of Kindness
Once again we find ourselves in an exciting new month, and the timer is ticking away
towards the end of the year. These upcoming two months are critical times in the year,
when the teachers need to make sure that the students remember everything they will have
to know in the next grade. That is why, as always, it is crucial to have parental support and
participation.
Even something as simple as asking a child what he or she learned that day can help
remind them of the lessons that they might otherwise forget; asking them to say even one
or two things that went on in class can be an invaluable tool in them recalling it later for a
test. Teachers do their best to make sure the students have acquired the skills, but parents
can really help us drive it home.
Together we can make sure that all of our young charges know everything they need to
in order to have a successful year now, and in their next grade.
Matthew Parker.

Photo Day!
Every school year creates
timeless memories of your chil-
dren. They grow so much over
the year that it can be amazing
to see. And every year GIS is
happy to offer the opportunity
to capture these memories
through picture day.
School pictures will be taken
on MAY 17th. If you wish to
have pictures taken and or-
dered, we will have information
in the office to help you. This
will be done by the same com-
pany that did last year‟s won-
derful photos, and we look for-
ward to seeing what they can do
this year!

Once again we‟re happy to
announce several new students
have joined us this month, to be
a part of GIS.
In Nursery 1 we‟re thrilled to
be joined by Caitlyn and Justin.
In Nursery 2 we‟re overjoyed to
have Pamela and NiNi in the
class now, and Kindergarten 2
welcomes Sonny.
We‟re happy to have all of
the new students in our halls
and in our shared home. Please
make sure that they are wel-
come!
Coming to GIS from Eastern Tennessee,
where he studied at Tennessee Technical Uni-
versity, Douglas brings a wonderful energy
and buoyant spirit to the school. He is the
newest teacher in the Kindergarten program,
where all of the students are just falling in
love with him.
He has been in Thailand for five years,
with his wife and two daughters Pamela (4,
and a new student in Nursery 2) and Pera (3
months old). And while he has chosen to
make Thailand his home and GIS his passion,
that doesn‟t mean the lover of history and
smooth jazz doesn't miss some things about
America. When asked, he said he misses
American pizza and the soft drink Mountain
Dew more than any other cuisine.
New Students and Teacher
My daughter Neen is studying in P1. She has been studying at GIS for
almost a year and a half. In the beginning she could not communicate at all in Chi-
nese or English, she just knew a couple of phrases that she had been taught at
home. But after only a few months, I found that she was communicating more and
more in those two languages. One thing that showed me she was learning and reas-
sured me was when she mentioned the rule from school that anyone who speaks
Thai—outside of Thai class—had to stand in the red square. It also reassured me
that she thought to ask whether or not they could sit in the square! This showed me
that she was not just learning but thinking in English, and helped to illustrate the
sense of humor from the school.
She, and GIS, have both shown me the great potential for learning lan-
guages, without fear or anxiety, that children have. Right now she can listen,
speak, read, and also write English with her own thoughts and her own imagination.
She loves to sing both English and Chinese songs—and dance to them—at school
and at home. She is always happy to go to school, and always has fun when she is
there. One time we were on the BTS during rush hour, and the trains was very
crowded. Neen said to the crowds (in Thai) “Quickly! Quickly, I want to go to school now!” I had to explain to her they could-
n‟t make the train go any faster. She is always so happy to go to school, even eager to go back at the end of a holiday.
I would like to say “Thanks a million” to the Principals Mr. and Mrs. Chu, to Dr. Sunthorn and Khun Orasa, Mrs. Rose
(the P1 Home Room Teacher). I‟d also like to say thank you so much to all the teachers, administrators and staff at GIS who
give so much time and effort for the kids. I do appreciate it very much and hope that you all will be encouraged with the pro-
gress of all of your students.
Thank you so much,
Supee Loaniyomthai
Neen‟s Mother
This is just a reminder that there will be two holidays during the month of May on which school will be closed. May 5 is
Coronation Day, and May 28 is Visakha Bucha Day. The school will not be open either days, so students should stay at home.
We hope you all have good holidays!

One of a student‟s fa-
vorite activities during the
school year comes in the
month of April. The sun
has grown hot in the sky
once more, and the year
seems like it has dragged
on forever with no relief.
And then finally it is time
for Songkran, and the break
that it brings. And the day
before the break students at
GIS look forward to being able to splash their friends and teachers to
celebrate the Thai New Year.
Unfortunately this year we were not able to celebrate Songkran
the day before the break. This was due to a combination of re-testing
for those students who needed it and unease about the protests in the
city. We promised that it would be held early in the third term to
make up for it.
WATER FESTIVAL
On Friday, April 23rd we lived up to that promise and gave the
students a water day. At 2 PM the students were dismissed early
from classes so they could change into better clothing and get their
water guns. From 2 until 3 PM, watery pandemonium reigned over
GIS.
From the smiles on the faces all around the courtyard, it seems
like everyone had a good time. Freddy got people with an old pop-
corn bucket filled with water, while Kin had a water gun longer than
his arm! Even the teachers got in on the act, with Teacher Nick be-
ing brutal with a bucket, and Teacher Matthew hosing students down
with the hose.
It may have been delayed, but absence made the heart grow
fonder and it seems that everyone had a wonderful time at the de-
layed water festival.
