I have been a pastor in the ELCA or its predecessor bodies for the past 34 years. So I come with lots of experience and hopefully some common sense learned through the years. You can check with a few of my friends to see if the common sense part is true or not. I was raised in the wheat farms of the Palouse in Eastern WA. The name of the community is Endico and during my youth over 50 years ago it was common to hear German spoken on our streets, we had a strong ethnic identy like many Lutheran churches. It was within the confines of Trinity Lutheran Church that I was bapzed, confirmed and eventually ordained in 1982. I am the middle child of three and have an older brother and younger sister and their families who live in the Pacific Northwest. Once I was ordained I served congregaons in Pennsylvania and Maryland before moving back to the Pacific Northwest where I eventually ended up at First Lutheran Church in Pasco, WA. I served in that congregaon for the next 23 years. While there I married and raised two great kids, Joshua, who just graduated from the University of WA in June and now makes his home in Seale and Kyle, who turned 18 on Sept 1. He is enrolled in high school in Pasco and connues to live with his mother, my former spouse, Mary Kaye. Life can somemes be complicated, as you all know aſter your last few months and that was certainly true for me these past few years. It seemed to me that I needed a me of reflecon away from ordained ministry, yet I also wanted to remain a part of the greater church, hence I chose to move to Holden Village, the Lutheran associated retreat camp in a remote part of the North Cascades Mountains. I worked there as part of an intenonal community. My job was in the post office, which is ironic for my dad was the Post Master of our small town when I was growing up. I believed it would be a peaceful place to rest and recharge and work at different tasks for the first me in many years. Of course I didn't know about the forest fire that would visit us last summer. The Wolverine Creek Fire came up to our very doorsteps in the days aſter our evacuaon, but thanks to good planning and assistance from Forest Service Hot Shots we survived and returned to the village. My original plan was to stay for one year, but I extended a few more months through this summer and saw the forest begin its long recovery. I received an email from Bishop Wells a few weeks ago about the opening that had unexpectedly happened. It was your need to have an Interim Pastor for a few months. He asked me to consider serving here and aſter prayerful consideraon that lasted about 5 seconds I said yes and feel very good that your council said yes too. It is a me of beginnings for all of us and God will be leading us on this next leg of the journey. A journey I'll be making with you too as pastor and fellow member of the body of Christ. I look forward to geng to know as many of you as I can and to preach the liberang power of the Gospel in our day to day lives. God's love is present in all of us. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, If I might I'd like to introduce myself to you through a few words about myself. As you know for the next few months I will be your Interim (Bridge) Pastor here at King of Glory. I'm very excited to be with you as you continue your journey to place a new pastor to be your shepherd in the years ahead. That doesn't tell you much about me though.

The name of the community is Endicott and during my youth over 50 years ago it was common to hear German spoken on our streets, we had a strong ethnic identity like many Lutheran churches. It was within the confines of Trinity Lutheran Church that I was baptized, confirmed and eventually ordained in 1982. I am the middle child of three and have an older brother and younger sister and their families who live in the Pacific Northwest. Once I was ordained I served congregations in Pennsylvania and Maryland before moving back to the Pacific Northwest where I eventually ended up at First Lutheran Church in Pasco, WA. I served in that congregation for the next 23 years. While there I married and raised two great kids, Joshua, who just graduated from the University of WA in June and now makes his home in Seattle and Kyle, who turned 18 on Sept 1. He is enrolled in high school in Pasco and continues to live with his mother, my former spouse, Mary Kaye. Life can sometimes be complicated, as you all know after your last few months and that was certainly true for me these past few years. It seemed to me that I needed a time of reflection away from ordained ministry, yet I also wanted to remain a part of the greater church, hence I chose to move to Holden Village, the Lutheran associated retreat camp in a remote part of the North Cascades Mountains. I worked there as part of an intentional community. My job was in the post office, which is ironic for my dad was the Post Master of our small town when I was growing up. I believed it would be a peaceful place to rest and recharge and work at different tasks for the first time in many years. Of course I didn't know about the forest fire that would visit us last summer. The Wolverine Creek Fire came up to our very doorsteps in the days after our evacuation, but thanks to good planning and assistance from Forest Service Hot Shots we survived and returned to the village. My original plan was to stay for one year, but I extended a few more months through this summer and saw the forest begin its long recovery. I received an email from Bishop Wells a few weeks ago about the opening that had unexpectedly happened. It was your need to have an Interim Pastor for a few months. He asked me to consider serving here and after prayerful consideration that lasted about 5 seconds I said yes and feel very good that your council said yes too. It is a time of beginnings for all of us and God will be leading us on this next leg of the journey. A journey I'll be making with you too as pastor and fellow member of the body of Christ. I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can and to preach the liberating power of the Gospel in our day to day lives. God's love is present in all of us. Peace, Pastor John

Time & Talent Inventory On September 11 a new Time & Talent packet will be available that describes the ministry opportunities available to all of us at King of Glory. Complete your Time & Talent inventory on September 11 and be entered into a drawing for a gift card. When the data is collected, this becomes a valuable tool for committees and other groups to see who might be interested working as part of their ministry. The packet will have three pieces: 1. A short survey to help each of us consider and reflect on our gifts we can share 2. A brief description of the ministry areas within King of Glory 3. The Time & Talent inventory sheet which you will fill out and turn in There is also a spiritual gifts survey online that you might consider taking as well: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/adult http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/test/youth

Capital Expenditure Ideas If you have capital expenditure idea(s) or project(s) you would like for the congregation to consider and vote on in October, you are invited to submit them to the church office or leave them in the Council President's mailbox. A capital expenditure project is one with an estimated cost of $5,000 or more (i.e., updating the kitchen). In October, we will let each congregation member vote on their top three choices so we can determine as a collective congregation where we should focus our money. Submissions will be accepted through September. Please seek out a council member if you have questions.

July Treasurer’s Report Summary All the bills were paid through the end of July, the checking account is balanced and the balance in the account as of July 31, 2016 was $56,331.29. Lutheran Community Services of Idaho received $700.00 and the Synod received $3,833.00 as our monthly benevolence. Congregation members using the automated giving through Vanco contributed $4,196.75 to the General Fund. This was 13% of the total giving to the General Fund, up from 11% last month. For the year to date income was $18,735.00 less than we expected to receive. However, we spent $8,484.00 less than we expected to spend during the month of July.

Pastor Kristi received all her final checks during the month of July.

Internet. Contributions can now be debited automatically from your checking or savings account or processed using your credit or debit card. Social Ministry Committee Project for September

Hope House Home for Children is the September project of the Social Ministry Committee. It is an Orphanage located in Marsing, ID. Hope House provides a Christian based home for approximately 60 young people under the age of 18 and receives no government funding.

Hope House began with a promise made by a little girl, Donnalee Velvick-Lowry who was abandoned and a victim of abuse, neglect and family dysfunction — who vowed that someday, she would make a home where children and teenagers like herself could be loved and cared for. Donna would love to share her powerful story and is available to speak at a group or class. Since they are supported only by private donations and do not receive any federal funding, they have many needs. Monetary donations are also welcome. During September please bring the listed items to provide to this worthwhile project: Girls Ankle socks in all colors, sizes 9 – 11 Hair Decorations for ages 10 – 19 Boys Short socks in white, grey & black Boxer Underwear sizes 14, 28/30, 34-36 Food Chocolate Chips, Vanilla Chips, and Butterscotch Chips

Summer Literacy Program Our summer literacy program, "Celebrating Reading", ended on August 4. Twenty children were enrolled and we had an average daily attendance of 16, once the year-round school children joined us after the first week. Nearly 40 volunteers gave many hours of time to read with students. We averaged 9-10 volunteers each day. Young people from our congregation volunteered a total of 135 hours! And a grandmother from our congregation and her granddaughter logged nearly 70 hours as volunteers! Thank you! With funds from an Idaho Community Foundation Grant, the Mission Endowment Fund, WELCA, and our church library patrons, we were able to purchase three series of leveled reading books, and many needed classroom supplies. In addition, this year, for the first time, we were able to give every child a hard-cover book, autographed by volunteers, to take home and keep. We are grateful to the church council for giving us additional space to use as classrooms this summer and for allowing us to use the church copier. The extra classroom space allowed us to have half the students in the "reading room" and the other half in the "math story problems/game room." After 40 minutes, the students switched rooms, making it possible for each student to read one on one with a volunteer for 40 minutes every day. Thank you to Linda in the office for opening and closing the doors for students and parents every day and for assisting in so many other ways. Finally, thank you KOG for your support of this community ministry.

The Christian Life Study Group Will begin another season of reading and discussing theology and ideas pertaining to the Christian faith. Meeting the first and third Mondays, books of interest are chosen by the group, read in advance, and discussed in lively intellectual and life-stretching sessions. The first book this fall will be Jesus, Interrupted by Bart Ehrman, a leading authority on the Bible and the life of Jesus. The Bible is the most widely purchased, extensively read and deeply revered book in the history of Western Civilization. But, it is also the most misunderstood by lay persons of all denominations. In this New York Times bestseller, Ehrman skillfully demonstrates that the New Testament is full of contradictory views about who Jesus was and the significance of his life. How does that affect Christians who want to be well educated, and knowledgeable about the Christian faith? If you are interested in joining the Christian Life group, purchase the book from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, begin reading. Join us Monday, October 3 at 1:00 pm in the Forum. Want more details? Contact Mary Rickerd.

All Crafters, Woodworkers, Quilters, Sewers and other Artists - Our annual WELCA sponsored holiday bazaar will be here before we know it…Weekend of November 11 & 12. We are calling upon all our creative members to consider donating items for this bazaar. We will be contacting

people to step up to help make this bazaar bigger and better than ever. We need enough craft items for a two day bazaar; so put your thinking caps on to come up with some new craft items to donate to the bazaar. If you would like a tax receipt for items you have donated, please let us know. Any questions, please contact Mary Kay Tinker or Nancy Severson. On December 3 we will work on creating holiday floral center pieces to decorate food trays at the VA Hospital. Using the plastic caps from aerosol cans, filled with floral oasis, the caps will be decorated using various greenery, floral items and pine cones. The filled caps will be delivered to VA Hospital patients for their bed trays or wherever they would like to place them. Please save those aerosol caps and donate them in the marked box in the Fellowship Hall. The Prayer Shawl ministry is now also making prayer cloths for you to put in your pocket or purse. They are small crocheted or knitted squares of yarn that you can easily carry around with you.

They are also now making homemade baby blankets and hats for parents who have lost a baby. Lots of good things happening for our women!!

Those of you who are not familiar with this dinner group, a few details - We meet four times during the year in one another's homes, always with six different people each time.

One dinner we host, another time we co-host, and the other two times we are guests. This is not a group for only couples, so if you're single grab a friend to sign up with you, or you can do it solo. It's a great way to get to know our fellow worshippers better. We all look forward to another year of good food, and good fellowship. Any questions? Feel free to phone Lisa Kraft, Becky Newberry or Alice Nelson.

Gramma’s Attic Items for Annual Bazaar We will be having an area for just Gramma’s Attic items. So if you have some items (Please no clothing!) set them aside until we set up for the bazaar on Thursday, November 10.

We will need to know who donated what, if items don’t sell so you can take them home. We don’t have a way to keep items stored at the church and we aren’t going to take them to Idaho Youth

Ranch or other thrift stores so your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Any questions please contact Nancy Severson or Mary Kay Tinker.

Are you a Scrapbooker? Scrapbook night is September 24 at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship hall. Bring your supplies, a snack to share and join us. We have had a group of four and have room for many more. We welcome any one who wants to work on projects in the community of others, not just

scrapbookers and not just KOG people! So bring you friends who are saying they just can't get anything done. Contact Mary Floyd or Mary Kay Tinker for details.

Burrito Style Pillowcase Kits available in limited quantities These kits are currently to those that wish to help sew these pillowcases for the cancer kids at our local hospitals. Donated fabric for this project is needed to make additional kits. Contact Nancy Severson to get material requirements or a kit/s to help us with this WELCA local community service project and return completed pillowcases to Nancy by October 31. Kits will include: pre-cut fabric pieces and instructions. NOTE: You can check YouTube for a video on how to make these pillowcases if you feel you need a visual aide.

November and December Coffee Hour Grab a buddy and sign up today for 1st or 2nd service coffee hours. No baking needed, just your hands and friendly smile. Thanks for your spirit of service! Contact Julia Bennett or sign up on the bulletin board outside the Fellowship Hall.

Craft Nights Craft nights for the bazaar are September 6 and 20 at 6:30 pm. We will be finishing up the flowerpot people and making golf ball ladybugs, so we will be painting and decorating. The goal is to have several projects going, so that you can do something that fits your skills and patience. Craft nights will continue the first and third Tuesdays through October. We welcome ideas for projects. Contact Nancy Severson or Mary Kay Tinker for details.
