The Goats
Once there was a boy who had three goats. Everyday he would take his goats to a hill. There the goats would freely munch on the fresh green grass. The goats would run around and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine too. At the end of the day, they boy would whistle to his goats to come down from the hill. The goats would obediently come down once they heard the boy’s whistle.
One late afternoon, the boy whistled to his goats but no goats came down the hill. The boy became so worried he began to cry. He thought his goats were gone forever.
Then three birds came to inquire about what was wrong.“Why are you crying?” asked the birds. The boy said. “I have been whistling for my goats to come but they have not come down the hill.”
The birds said, “We will bring them down to you.” So the birds flew to the goats and tried to shoo them down the hill but the goats were busy chewing on grass and flowers. The birds went back to the boy and sadly informed him that the goats would not listen to them.
Soon a fox came by and asked why the boy was crying. The boy sadly replied, :My goats will not come down the hill. It is getting dark already.”
The fox said, “I will go right away and send your goats down.”The fox went up the hill and tried to frighten the goats. The goats did not mind the fox. They continued eating grass. Sadly the fox went down the hill. He started to cry too. He was not able to help the boy at all.
Then bees came buzzing by. They asked the boy, “Why are you crying?”The boy answered, “My goats won’t come down. The sun is going down already. It is getting dark.”“We will help you,” replied the bees.
The bees flew speedily up the hill. They easily found the goats with the help of the fireflies. When the goats saw the bees, they suddenly panicked.“Oh no!” Bees! The bees will sting us. Let us go down the hill. It is safe there,” said the goats.
The fireflies lighted the way down the hill for the goats who were moving hurriedly. Upon seeing the goats, the boy, the fox,and the birds rejoiced. Now they could finally go home. Silently the boy looked back to the bees, fireflies, fox, and the birds and said, “Thank you!” The boy and his goats happily went home.
