1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the

screening.

The Godfather is considered a modern classic. It touches on subjects that a very brutal and somewhat taboo to talk openly about making this a captivating piece. This film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972, it was the seventh of his films but it was the one that put him on the map. The story line is adapted from a book Mario Puzo's pulp, which lead this film to win best screen play. Along with that The Godfather won for best actor (Marlon Brando) and best picture, and was also nominated for eight others. The themes were all very prominent; the importance of family is a major trend throughout the fill as well as the anti heroic view and violence. I feel as if this film covers all bases making it entertaining for a wide audience

2) Find a related article and summarize the content.

The Godfather gives an insight of a culture that many people are curious about; the murder, lies, and secrets makes this tale very intriguing. Unlike other mobster movies this film stands out of the crowd, bringing something more than just tommy-guns. With Marlon Brando and Al Pacino portraying a father and son Italian mafia leaders audience members are sure to get an insight of the mob lifestyle. With fine direction by Francis Coppola this movie had an all-star team. Coppola couldn't initially see the

power this piece could provide and took the job for all the wrong reasons, he owed Warner Bros 300,000 and his production company was folding. This is a great example of something good coming out of something bad, the only reason the company asked Coppola was because they were turned down by so many and he was Italian. "somebody had to direct it." said Paul Tatara.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. How did the

article support or change the way you thought about the film,

director, content, etc.?

TMC's article helped me appreciate the film more, with actors and a team that were not very popular or disliked in Hollywood at the time, they succeeded to make film history. This powerful drama has captured a certain silence that entraps the viewers, words unspoken and time left to appreciate a moment are what made this film beautiful. When Coppola realized the subtext of this script and knew the actors he wanted to portray these characters The Godfater was bound for greatness.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal

opinion, formed as a result of 4 things: the screening, class 3

discussions, text material and the article. I am less interested in

whether you liked or disliked a film, (although that can be part of

this) than I am in your understanding of its place in film history or the

contributions of the director.

I believe that this film has a well deserved spot as number two in the film hall of fame. The angles in which it was shot to the language of silence it is a true classic. Not particularly having an interest in the subject topic made no difference in the viewing of this film. The Godfather succeeded in suspense, storytelling, and splendor. The quality and professionalism shows in this piece and has created a milestone for many films to come.
