THE GOLD RUSH

“Suddenly, the greatest gold rush in history was

on, and "forty-niners" began flooding into California

chasing after the fist-sized gold nuggets rumored to

be strewn about the ground just waiting to be picked

up. California's population and wealth skyrocketed.”

CALIFORNIA

California was

not yet a state

when the Gold

rush began. The

state didn’t

become what it is

today until 1850.

The population

grew too rapidly to

be ignored.

ANNIE HALL STRONG

"First of all,

delicate women

have no right

attempting the

trip...Those who

love luxury,

comfort and ease

would better

remain at home."

This woman started encouraging women to travel west with their husbands, or on their own.
