Fit Testing

®

Quantitative res-pirator fit testingis a practice thathas been aroundsince the late1960’s. Whilethere have beenseveral ways inwhich to performa respirator fittest, there werenever any scien-tific studies toprove that thesemethods actually worked. Thesetechnologies have simply been“accepted” because they werethe only way to do quantitative fittesting. The technology seemedto make sense, and at least itwas better than nothing at all.Or was it?

Things changed in 1992 whenControlled Negative Pressure(CNP) was implemented as awhole new approach to fit test-ing. This revolutionary way toperform a respirator fit test couldbe subjected to scientific scrutiny. The results? Unlike all othermethods of fit testing, ControlledNegative Pressure was proven to

quickly and accurately measurerespirator leakage, which is thekey to measuring respirator fit.

CNP technology was acceptedby OSHA in 1998, and hasquickly been adopted by indus-try to be the the gold standardin respirator fit testing.

While old technologies are some-times hard to give up because,“we’ve just always done it thatway,” the OHD Quantifit offersan impressive array of advan-tages that can dramaticallyimprove a respiratory protectionprogram. Within the first ten sec-onds of testing, the Quantifit candetermine whether the respiratoruser has a basic fit or not. Andthe OSHA-accepted CNP Redonprotocol takes as little as two tothree minutes. If other quantita-tive fit test instruments measuredaccuracies of less than 40%1, whyput your employees at risk?

The Redon test protocol allowsyou to quickly assess respirator fitbased on three mask donnings.Given the Quantifit’s speed andaccuracy in measuring actual res-pirator leakage, why subject youremployees to something otherthan the best?

Quantifit...the Gold Standard in Respirator Fit Testing

Here’s how theQuantifit works:During a fit test, the respira-

tor inlets are capped with

test adapters, and the

inhalation valves are

removed from the mask.

With the test subject holding

his or her breath for no

more than ten seconds, the

Quantifit then establishes

and maintains a slight vacu-

um, or controlled nega-

tive pressure, inside the

mask. Since the respirator

inlets are sealed, all sources

of leakage into the mask

are through the face-to-

facepiece seal. The volume

of air drawn out of the

mask by the Quantifit dur-

ing this short period of time

is equal to the leak rate into

the mask through the face-

to-facepiece seal.

It’s that simple….

n Proven Technology TheOHD Quantifit is a highly special-ized instrument which utilizes thescientifically-proven and patentedCNP (Controlled NegativePressure) technology to directlymeasure respirator leakage. TheOHD Quantifit is accepted byOSHA and appears in the FederalRegulations governing fit testing[29 CFR 1910.134]. The Quantifitis also included in the CanadianStandards [CSA Z94.4-2011] andUK HSE Standards [EN132-149].

n Fastest Fit TestingAvailable With the OSHA-approved CNP REDON respiratorfit test protocol, a fit test can beperformed in as little as 2-3 minutes and there is no waitingperiod for smokers as requiredwith other fit test methods. TheREDON protocol uses CNP tech-nology’s superior speed and accu-racy to help achieve the best res-pirator fit possible. The multipledonnings required assures thatthe worker knows how to don therespirator correctly with each use.

n Most Health ProtectivePeer-reviewed scientific studieshave shown that the OHDQuantifit produces much moreaccurate, more health protective, and more believable test resultsthan other systems. In studieswhere a known calibrated respirator leak was present, theOHD Quantifit measured 98% of known calibrated leak. Theaerosol-based system measuredonly 37% of known calibratedleak1.

n Easy to Use The Quantifit takesthe user through the test protocolstep-by-step so that there is noguess-work, and very little time isneeded to instruct the employeebeing tested. There is no instru-ment warm-up period to worryabout, and the one-minute dailycalibration assures that theQuantifit is working within a stricttolerance. Ease of use means lessmistakes, and quicker testing.

n Most Rigorous Test The useof ambient air as a standard(non-varying) gaseous challengeagent, provides a more rigoroustest of mask fit than does anaerosol agent. If air leaks into arespirator, there is a chance thatparticles, vapors, or gas contami-nants may leak in. When usingaerosol-based systems, the testsystem can only see and measuresome of the particles that mightenter the respirator.

n Direct Measurement ofLeak The Quantifit directlymeasures facepiece leakage. There are no specific conditionsor environmental concerns whentesting with the OHD Quantifit. The unit precisely measures leakrate (in cc/min) by determiningthe amount of air that leaks intothe respirator during the fit test.

n NIST Calibration The ability tocalibrate the Quantifit with gener-ally available primary calibrationsystems assures a higher standardof test results (NIST traceablestandard).

n On-board Software Not onlydoes the on-board software allowthe Quantifit to be extremely flexible, but all updates can beachieved through a flash-upgrade.Users can download software fromthe internet and easily upgrade theQuantifit to assure the latest andmost up-to-date version.

n On-board Storage TheQuantifit can save records in itson-board memory. These recordscan later be transferred to theincluded FitTrack Gold software ona personal computer.

n Keyboard Interface TheQuantifit can use a keyboard toinput data into the local memory. This allows the user to enter anemployee’s name and ID number,as well as the respirator informa-tion. Keyboard input is easier andquicker than touch-screen or otherinput methods.

n USB Computer InterfaceThe Quantifit can be connected toa computer for operation throughFitTrack GoldTM software. This gives the user more control andadvanced record keeping opportunities.

n USB Memory StickInterface While data can betransferred to a PC via the USBconnection, one may also transferdata via a USB memory stick.

n USB HP Printer This printerconnection allows for tests to beprinted directly from the Quantifit, without the need for a personalcomputer. (Visit our website for alist of compatible HP printers.)

n Optical Encoder KnobThe navigational knob on theQuantifit allows for fast and intuitive navigation through themenus on the instrument. Thishelps to achieve fast and depend-able data entry.

n Tilted Backlit Display Thedisplay can be adjusted for anylighting situation, and is tilted foroptimum viewing whether theoperator is standing or sitting.

n Universal Power Cord Thepower cord for the Quantifit willadjust to the proper voltageregardless of the country in whichthe testing is being performed. The end user will simply swap outthe prong configuration to inter-face with the local settings.

n Flexible Data ManagementSoftware While the OHDQuantifit can be used as a stand-alone unit, FitTrack Gold softwareallows for easy testing anddependable record keepingthrough a personal computer.FitTrack can print individualreports or summary reports inmany configurations. Data can beimported and exported to meetvarious needs. Users can share acommon database or sync to adatabase on a shared server.

Selectable Test Model ParametersEquivalent Fit Factors are calculated from actualmeasured respirator leak rates, based on thefollowing “modeled” test parameters which areuser selectable in custom protocols:

Inspiratory Work RateMeasurement of energy expended by testsubject in the normal working environ-ment; indicated in thousands of caloriesper hour (K-Cal/hr). Selections include

100 (light activity)200 (moderate activity) 300 (heavy activity) and 350 (extreme activity)

Mask TypeSelections for full-face or half mask respi-rator types.
