Interior specification is everything if you’re driving a GTI, and here the new generation Golf GTI will not disappoint. Settle into the

deep front sports seats with height and lumbar adjustment, hold onto the race-inspired leather sports steering wheel and feel the

excitement begin to build. The specially designed aluminium gear knob and racing pedals make it unmistakably clear you’re sitting

in a GTI, while the quality of the standard ‘Interlagos’ cloth, or optional leather upholstery, and brushed aluminium instrument

surrounds reinforce the feeling that this is no ordinary car.

If the original was breathtaking, the Golf GTI is literally mind-blowing.

Committed to a tradition of pure driving enjoyment, this new generation

GTI carries the legacy of sports performance to unprecedented levels.

The Golf GTI is powered by a new 16-valve direct injection 2.0 litre

FSI turbocharged unit which develops a phenomenal 200 PS at just 5,100

rpm and a hefty 280 Nm of torque from only 1,800 rpm. The FSI technology

utilised in the new GTI engine provides a double-edged advantage – power

and economy. FSI has taken the petrol engine to a new level of efficiency.

It works by injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber under high

pressure. The benefit of this method – it only burns the exact amount of

fuel required.

The new engine is linked to either a slick six speed manual gearbox or

the new DSG automatic which offers a genuine alternative to a manual.

The DSG gearbox is able to change gear faster than a manual and more

smoothly than a standard automatic, but with performance and fuel

economy figures comparable to the manual.

This means that the GTI 200 PS auto DSG will reach 62 mph from standstill

in just 6.9 seconds and go on to a very respectable top speed of 145 mph,

where the law permits, whilst returning exceptional fuel consumption figures.

With outstanding performance comes a requirement for outstanding safety and here the Golf GTI excels. To start with, the

body is laser-welded to provide immense strength, resulting in a structure which can absorb extremely high impact energy

and protect the driver and passengers within an inner safety cell. There are a total of six airbags: two front airbags, two front

seat side impact airbags and two curtain airbags. In addition, there are three-point seat belts for all seats and driver’s and

passenger’s front seat active head restraints which help minimise whiplash injuries in the event of an impact from the rear.

Active safety features are those which can help you avoid an accident in the first place and the Golf GTI has several key

examples – Traction Control (ASR) can help to avoid wheel spin in slippery conditions and a sensor-controlled Electronic

Stabilisation Programme (ESP) detects critical situations at an early stage and takes action by braking individual wheels

and reducing the engine’s output, helping to keep the vehicle under control. ESP is supported by an Anti-lock Braking System

(ABS) and Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) which recognises an emergency braking situation and increases the braking effort.

These new generation safety features have produced one of the safest cars on the road. No wonder the Golf GTI has

been awarded a five star NCAP safety rating.

A 61 ⁄2" multifunction colour display shows a map of your

GTI – 2.0 litre FSI 200 PS.

Technical specification.

01) The maximum power output figures are quoted in PS (or Pferdestärke,which is the metric equivalent of horsepower). To convert from metric to imperial horsepower, divide the PS figure by 1.0139.

02) Figures are calculated in accordance with manufacturer’s criteria.Vehicle unladen weight ranges with 90% tank capacity withoutdriver. The individual unladen weight depends on the specification of the vehicle, this then reduces the possible payload accordingly.

03) With increasing altitude the engine performance diminishes. From 1,000 m above sea level and for every 1,000 m thereafter 10% of the vehicle/trailer weight (trailer weight + gross vehicle weight) must be deducted.

04) Where the law permits. 05) Thanks to the knock control, unleaded four star (at least 95 RON)

can be used instead of unleaded Super plus. In order to achievemaximum fuel consumption benefits on the FSI engine, Ultra LowSulphur Petrol (ULSP) must be used.

06) Official fuel consumption according to EU Directive 99/94. Theconsumption calculation according to 1999/100/EC is based on the actual unladen weight of the vehicle. Additional specifications can lead to a higher weight class and hence to consumption figures of this higher weight class. The driving style, road and trafficconditions, environmental influences and vehicle condition can inpractice lead to consumption figures, which may differ from thosecalculated with this standard.

07) The weight of a vehicle will influence the level of CO2 emission itproduces; as a result, vehicles with higher levels of specification andfactory-fitted options may emit higher levels of CO2. The CO2 figurequoted for each vehicle is the maximum possible. The unladen weight of the vehicle is calculated by range at the time of manufacture and the maximum possible CO2 emission for that weight range is appliedaccording to the Council Directive 80/1268EEC as amended byCommission Directive 1999/100/EC on the approximation of the lawsof the member states relating to the carbon dioxide emissions andthe fuel consumption of motor vehicles.
