Dear friends and parishioners of The Good Shepherd Parish –

As we proceed through the month of September, we are invited by Pope Francis to reflect on all of God’s creation, particularly during this period known as 2020 Season of Creation.

In his message of 01 September, that is at the following Vatican link: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/pont-messages/2020/documents/papa-francesco_20200901_messaggio-giornata-cura-creato.html Pope Francis invites us into a sacred time of prayer so that we can once again become attuned to the natural gifts of life here on earth with which we have been entrusted. There is also a prayer published on page 5 of this bulletin that you can pray daily to be in solidarity with people all over the world.

As we enter a new Pastoral Year with the schools opening and some limited parish activities, we must remain mindful of the challenges of the COVID-19 restrictions and be vigilant in following the protocols recommended by the Provincial and Municipal Public Health officials. Fortunately for our parish we are able to manage to hold in-person Sunday Masses along with two weekday Masses. We also continue to broadcast our Sunday Mass on our YouTube channel (thank you Mark McAvoy!) for all those parishioners who are not yet able to return to in-person Masses; through this online Mass we also reach a number of friends of our parish who pray along with us each week… a rich outreach in these trying COVID times.

If you are able to help out with any of the Sunday Mass teams (Welcoming; Seating; and Wipe Down), I strongly encourage you to email [email protected]. Your help is needed and would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!

I continue to hold you all in my daily prayers and I ask you to remember me in yours. God bless you.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Virgil

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Please pray for the children of our parish who will be receiving their First Holy Communion at separate Masses in September, with only the families of the children present. This Sacrament was delayed due to the COVID-19 lockdown and it is with great joy that we are now able to celebrate this wonderful event in the lives of these faith-filled children and their families.

Your prayers are requested for these children as they continue to grow in love of Our Lord through the gift of receiving Holy Eucharist.

NATIONAL PASTORAL INITIATIVE FOR LIFE AND THE FAMILY

Merciful God, we have been blessed by your steadfastness in love. Teach us to be slow to anger as you are, and to respond to it with wisdom, that we may move through it, towards mercy and forgiveness. Amen. (13 September 2020)

Message from Father Robert Mokry, OFM, Commisary of the Holy Land in Canada

Regarding the Pontifical Collection for the Custody of the Holy Land for the benefit of the Church and the Christians of the Holy Land:

The Pontifical Collection in support of the Holy Land, usually collected on Good Friday, was cancelled when churches were closed due to the pandemic. Pope Francis has requested that it be taken up on Sunday the 13th of September – a date close to that of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This feast celebrates Christ’s saving work and also reminds us of faithful Christian pilgrims, like St. Helen when she found the relics of the Holy Cross in the 4th Century, who have committed themselves to preserving the holy sites as places of worship that sustain our Christian culture and history of salvation. The annual Holy Land Collection not only helps to maintain churches and shrines located at holy sites, but, above all, helps to support the pastoral, welfare, educational and social works that the Church undertakes in caring for the local population. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, invites you to be in solidarity with the Church and the Christians in the Holy Land.

On behalf of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, and entrusted with this care, I sincerely thank you in advance for your support.

Fr. Robert Mokry, OFM Commissary of the Holy Land in Canada Parishioners at The Good Shepherd Parish are asked to consider making a separate allotment in support of this Collection. Donations may be made via one of the following ways:

! a separate cheque in any weekly envelope (specify this Collection on the memo line of your cheque); ! a separate donation placed in the designated basket at the Baptismal Font; or ! contact Bonnie at the Parish office (613-824-4394) to arrange an added one-time amount, for this worthy

charity, to your Pre-Authorized Contribution. Thank you very much for your support.

Please pray for those who have requested our prayers:

Deacon Dan Careau Doreen Dumont Bruce Hodgins Jean-Ella Lemire Joe MacDonell Michael Nortey Rosi Saunders Jean Scharf

This year due to COVID-19 it has been decided that The Good Shepherd Parish will participate through prayer by praying at home on Sunday the 25th October. Parishioners are asked to choose a half hour between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. The aim is to have someone in prayer continuously. Please contact Seán O’Carroll by email at: [email protected] or by phone at: 613-824-0284; he will maintain a roster so that continuous prayer can be assured.

What is 40 DAYS FOR LIFE™

The worldwide 40 DAYS FOR LIFE campaign seeks to unite God's people in prayer to end abortion. Through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil, we seek to change hearts and encourage a culture of life. A prayer vigil will be held daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm at Bank and Queen Streets downtown.

RCIA - You are Invited! Sometimes invitations lead us to totally unexpected experiences ... to a life of peace, faith and hope. If you have never been baptized and find yourself attracted to the Catholic faith, come and explore the possibilities of becoming a member of the Roman Catholic Church. If you have been baptized in another faith tradition, this journey can lead you to full communion with the Catholic Church. If you were baptized in the Catholic faith but have never received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, come and inquire about how to become fully initiated in the Church.

Do you attend Mass with your Catholic spouse? Are your children preparing to receive the sacraments? This invitation is for you, too! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process by which one can answer God's invitation! The Good Shepherd Parish offers RCIA, a process of learning and discussion held in the context of prayer, shared experiences and the Word of God. Starting October 1, 2020, we will meet each Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. If you feel this invitation may be intended for you (or someone you know), please call Marilyn Dunn at 613.830.9545 or The Good Shepherd Parish at 613.824.4394 for more information.

News from the Knights of Columbus Council 9005 Good Shepherd Parish

A famous Catholic philosopher, Marshal McLuhan, once wrote, "the medium is the message”. This phrase was coined before Vatican II. The Theologians at the Council got the message and thus the Council promulgated the Decree on the Media of Social Communications called Inter Mirifica. The purpose of this document was to "enrich peoples’ minds and the consolidation of the Kingdom of God" (Inter Mirifica #2).

This endorsement of the mass media was not lost on the Knights. They have a film crew that produces documentaries relating to the charitable works of the order. Recently they were here in Ottawa interviewing Br. Joe and Grand Knight Br. Dem Magmanlac concerning a food programme; more about that next week.

Here at our parish Br. Mark McAvoy has emerged as our hi-tech guru. He has successfully installed a new multi-line telephone system in our parish. Currently he records and uploads to our parish YouTube channel, our Sunday Mass for those who are not able to attend in person due to COVID-19 concerns. And I am sure he has other initiatives planned towards updating our church and thus re-imaging it. Over the years Br. Mark has been key in the design and maintenance of our parish website.

Remember the words of John 8:12 "I am the light of the world". So let us continue to promote the Kingdom of God in our council and in our church through the means of the media.
