Romans 13:1-2Let every person be
subject to the governing authorities. For there is
no authority except from God, and those that exist have been
instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever
resists the authorities resists what God has
appointed, and those who resist will incur
judgment.
1. Gov’t authorities are established by God
Romans 13:1-2Let every person be
subject to the governing authorities. For there is
no authority except from God, and those that exist have been
instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever
resists the authorities resists what God has
appointed, and those who resist will incur
judgment.
1. Gov’t authorities are established by God
Romans 13:3-4For rulers are not a terror to
good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear
of the one who is in authority? Then do what
is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for
he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he
does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the
servant of God, an avenger who carries out
God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

2. Rulers have a purpose
Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human
institution, whether it be to the emperor as
supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those
who do evil and to praise those who do
good.
Romans 13:5Therefore one must be in
subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but
also for the sake of conscience.
1. Gov’t authorities are established by God
2. Rulers have a purpose
3. Submission is the Right thing to do
For this is the will of God, that by doing good you
should put to silence the ignorance of
foolish people. 16 Live as people who are
free, not using your freedom as a cover-up
for evil, but living as servants of God.
Stops foolish talk, accusations, and sets a good example
For what credit is it if, when you sin and are
beaten for it, you endure? But if when
you do good and suffer for it you endure, this
is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
Doing right with patience gains God’s approval
Romans 13:6-8For because of this you also
pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very
thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed,
revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom
respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. 8 Owe
no one anything, except to love each other, for the one
who loves another has fulfilled the law.

3. Submission is the Right thing to do
4. Render what is due, in all areas… It is unseemly for a Christian to be owing

1 Peter 3:5-6For this is how the holy women
who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by
submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed
Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if
you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
For children
For wives
1 Peter 5:2-4shepherd the flock of God
that is among you, exercising oversight, not
under compulsion, but willingly, as God would
have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not
domineering over those in your charge, but being
examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown
of glory.
For elders
Hebrews 13:17Obey your leaders and

Hebrews 13:18Pray for us, for we are sure
that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act
honorably in all things.
2 Corinthians 8:21for we aim at what is
honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the
sight of man.
We should be paying what we owe in respect, and honor, and support in homes and in the church just as we should with authorities that govern us.
