Aliquippa Jr. / Sr. High School Graduation Project Introduction Welcome to the Graduation Project!  The purpose of the Graduation Project is to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge you have gained and the maturity you have achieved during you high school career.  The Graduation Project gives you a chance to choose your area of study, to combine different disciplines, to explore new horizons and to utilize your talents in a productive manner.

Why a Graduation Project? In order for a student to graduate from high school, the Pennsylvania State Board of Regulations requires each student in Pennsylvania to satisfactory complete a project in order to receive a high school diploma.  The Aliquippa School District created the Graduation Project to serve as the vehicle to meet this requirement.

What is a Graduation Project? The Graduation Project has six components, which begins in eleventh grade.

Researching and writing a 5‐7 page documented paper on an interest of your choice.

The evaluation of this paper will be included as part of your final grade in English.

Explore an interest of your choice.  You will be shadowing and reflecting on your experience.  Apply the information you gained in your research to create a tangible product, some “thing”

you create to demonstrate your mastery of the topic.  You should plan on documenting your experience with pictures and/or video.  A minimum of 25 hours verified by your mentor is required.  It will be a combination of shadowing and your activity.

Create an 81/2 X 11 inches poster representative of your project and paper topics for school‐wide display.

Create a Portfolio to document your progress and keep you organized.  The final corrected

copy of your research paper will be included.

Present your project to a panel of judges.  An 8 to 10 minute presentation will allow you to

explain your project and exhibit all that you have learned.  Your presentation will include your product and your portfolio and will be the culminating activity of your Senior Project.

Aliquippa High School  100 Harding Avenue, Aliquippa, PA 15001  Telephone: 724‐857‐7515  Dear Parent/Guardian:  In order for a student to graduate from high school, the Pennsylvania State Board of Regulations requires each student in Pennsylvania to satisfactory complete a project in order to receive a high school diploma. The Aliquippa School District created the Graduation Project to serve as the vehicle to meet this requirement. The purpose of the project is to "assure that the student is able to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding." (PA Chapter 4, Title 22.) Of utmost importance.. . the Graduation Project is a graduation requirement. Students who do not complete the Project cannot receive a diploma. Also, students who do not meet established guidelines may not be able to walk in the graduation ceremony. Students who follow the guidelines and meet all necessary deadlines will easily complete the Project and have a good experience doing so. A brief outline of the Project process is as follows:  The Aliquippa Graduation Project has five components: A research paper; job‐shadowing; a physical project, which is related to the paper; an oral presentation of the project to a panel of judges; and a portfolio, which reflect the creation of the project from beginning to end. This Project will call upon your son/daughter to use the skills he/she has acquired and practiced throughout twelve years of formal education.  The first component is a research paper, which will be completed in the eleventh grade. This paper will require students to use specific skills such as research, organization, and time management to produce a five to seven page typed document on a chosen career.  The second component gives the students an opportunity to explore a chosen career by job‐shadowing.  The third component is the actual project. A hands‐on experience or product related to some aspect of the research topic is required. Students will need a mentor in the field of study, who will provide some expertise on the project and verify that the student has spent at least twenty‐five hours working on it. This project is to be worked on and completed outside of the regular classroom, including the Vo‐Tech classroom.  The fourth component of the overall project is a portfolio. It will contain various elements and forms as outlined in this booklet, and any other materials pertaining to the Graduation Project.

Page 6: AliquippaThe Graduation Project consists of a project proposal, graduation project proposal letter, written research paper, tangible project, journal (time log), reflection paper,

The last component to the Graduation Project is an oral presentation/job interview given by the students to a panel of judges. During this presentation, students will present their physical projects and explain the learning that occurred in completing the research and project. These presentations will be scheduled for the first Friday in May.  One of the objectives of the Senior Project is to teach students to prioritize their time in order to meet deadlines.  Due dates for the components are given many weeks in advance, and students are expected to meet them. Not being in school on the day of a deadline does not excuse a student from the responsibility of turning in the item on the required date. However, exceptions may be made for serious illness. Please keep in mind: In order for a senior to receive credit for his or her Graduation Project, all components must be completed.  A successful Graduation Project involves parental and teacher support as well as student initiative and self‐discipline. To graduate, students must complete and pass each of the above components. We hope you will become involved with your son or daughter in this Project. If we all work together, this will be one of the most rewarding experiences the students will have in high school!  A Graduation Project contract is included with this packet. Please review it with your child and return signed to me.

Shadowing a Professional

Finding a professional to shadow:

• The Key – DO NOT wait until the last minute. • Professionals who agree to have you shadow them for a day are doing you a favor.

• Be flexible and appreciative.

• Once you have selected a career from your profile, begin contacting professionals.

•  Ask family members and friends if they know of anyone who may be able to have you join him/her for a day.

When you shadow:

• You must have the professional sign your shadowing verification paper.

• Dress appropriately

• Bring a notebook and something to write with – noting observations will help with your paper and presentation.

• With permission, take photographs which you should use as a visual during your oral presentation.

• Ask lots of questions.  This will help you take the most out of your experience.
