Buy With Confidence

Have Peace of Mind

From experience we can say that many properties that are for sale have some irregularities in their paperwork, however it is our speciality to eradicate them. Whether you are selling or buying you want to do so with a sense of complete confidence. Working with an impartial Lawyer we are therefore currently updating the Title documents to a good amount of properties, so that when you buy with us you know that the property is registered correctly. We can also advise on Planning Issues which can save endless difficulties later on.

For those who already own a property and may have concerns, we offer a FREE consultation whereby you can bring along a copy of your Title Deed and IBI (Rates) certificate and we will establish whether all your property is registered correctly. If inconsistencies are found we will explain fully what needs to be done, give you a time scale and a written estimate of the cost. Once completed you’ll see where the corrections have been made, thereafter happy that all your property is fully registered.

News in Spain

Source: www.typicallyspanish.com

TWO PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN A LIGHT AIRCRAFT CRASH IN VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA AIRDROME.

It appears the craft fell into the Rio Seco at El

Trapiche on Sunday 15th April. The two men

aged 35 and 36, instructor and pupil, were

carrying out instruction classes at the time. The

35 year old instructor has been named with the

initials FJGD and the pupil was 36 year old L.R.

Vice President of the Royal Málaga Aeroclub,

Carlos Sedano, told EFE news agency that it had

happed when the craft was coming into land, but

not managing to do so, had tried to take off again

and go round, but came down outside the

airfield. Firemen had to cut part of the fuselage

to recover the bodies. The National Police have

opened an investigation.ANDALUCIA INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS DELAYED BY 2012 BUDGET CUTS.

BENALMÁDENA BEACH LAW IS ILLEGAL.

Two large infrastructure projects in Andalucía

are accumulating more delays. In Cádiz the

second bridge, which was planned to be open

this year to coincide with the 200th anniversary

of the ‘La Pepa’ Constitution sees construction at

a standstill. Minister for Development, Ana

Pastor said in the Senate that the problem was a

lack of materials, and she blamed the previous

Socialist Government for not having signed the

opportune contracts with the supplier. And the

last section of motorway to replace the

dangerous curves and climbs on the A-4 at

Despeñaperros on the northern border of

Andalucía has also been delayed. Only four

kilometres are needed for completion, but the

Development Ministry has not pardoned the

work from this year’s cuts. It’s financing, a

further 83 million is needed, has been moved

into 2013. It will be 12 years therefore from

when the road first appeared in the 2001 State

Budget. Construction work started six years ago.

The Junta de Andalucía says the beach by-laws

in Benalmádena are illegal and has called for

them to be cancelled. It says the by-laws go

against the general interest of the Ley de

Costas. Benalmádena Town Hall has already

initially approved the measures which include

the banning of sunshades between the

hammocks and at the waterside. The law also

said that bathing would only be allowed after

11am for reasons of security and for cleaning.

A letter from the Junta has warned that the law

could be contested, directly from the state,

regional or local administration.

It's thought the husband stabbed his wife before

jumping of a balcony to commit suicide. The

body of a 55 year old woman, named with the

initials RGR, has been found in her house in

Sevilla, showing signs of violence, and five

minutes later her husband committed suicide by

jumping to his death from a nearby building. His

was 57 and had the initials VDJ. It appears to be

a new case of domestic violence, according to

the emergency services. They were alerted by

the couple’s 18 year old son who found the body

of his mother in the lounge when he got home to

the flat in Calle Cisneo Alto. Alerted by his

screams, a neighbour called 112 at 1.45am on

Sunday. Local and National Police and health

professionals went to the scene where the

woman was certified to have died. Then no more

than 5 five minutes later there was another 112

call saying a man was laying on the ground,

apparently dead, in a street just round the

corner, Calle Rafael Cansinos Assens. It seems

the husband had jumped to his death from the

roof of a building.

Spanish lorry driver was arrested in the

Tanger-Med port in the north of Morocco when

his articulated lorry was found to be carrying

about 9 tons of hashish. The customs authority in

the port say the drug was camouflaged in a

cargo of melons from Agadir in the south of

Morocco. It was discovered as the lorry was

preparing to cross the Strait to Europe.

museum in Italy has

started burning its Aartworks in protest

at budget cuts which it says

have left cultural

institutions out of pocket.

Antonio Manfredi, of the

Casoria Contemporary Art

Museum in Naples, set fire

to the first painting on

Tuesday. "Our 1,000

artworks are headed for

destruction anyway because of the government's

indifference," he said. The work was by French

artist Severine Bourguignon, who was in favour of

the protest and watched it online. Mr Manfredi

plans to burn three paintings a week from now on,

in a protest he has dubbed "Art War". Artists from

across Europe have lent their support, including

Welsh sculptor John Brown, who torched one of

his works, Manifesto, on Monday.

Sweden's culture

minister is facing calls to

photographed cutting a

cake shaped in the form

of a naked black woman.

The incident involving

Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth

happened at the Museum

of Modern Art in

Stockholm. According to Radio Sweden, the

museum said the cake was supposed to highlight

the issue of female circumcision. But the

Association for African Swedes said it was a

crude racist caricatur Kitimbwa Sabuni, a

spokesperson for the group, told Swedish news

agency TT: "To say that you did this for a good

cause only makes the mockery of people who are

victims of racism and of circumcision worse.”

he original cheque used to

buy the Superman comic Tcharacter from its original

creators has been sold in an online

auction for £160,000 (£101,000).

Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster

from Cleveland were paid $130

(£82) for all the rights to Superman

by Detective Comics, later known

as DC Comics. The pair later tried

to win back the rights to Superman

in court, as it became part of a

global industry. The ComicConnect website has

not revealed who won the auction. "The concept of

the superhero was born with Superman," Vincent

Zurzolo, the co-founder of ComicConnect, told

Reuters. "That $130 cheque essentially created a

billion-dollar industry," he added, with other

characters such as Batman, Spider-Man and X-

Men following in the footsteps of the Man of Steel.

ComicConnect told Reuters that when the first

Superman movie came out in 1978, Mr Shuster

was so poor he was working for a

delivery company.mIt was a box-office

success followed by four more

Superman films and a Supergirl

version. Another is due for release in

June 2013. There has been a series of

rights dispute over Superman.

Although $130 is around $2,300

(£1,450) in today's money, it is a tiny

fraction of what the character has

earned since then. The heirs of the

creators Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster

are still involved in court battles with

DC Comics as they try to reclaim their rights to

the character. The original cheque also paid the

pair for earnings from other characters they were

also working on for the company. ComicConnect

says the cheque was used in a court case in the

1970s, the last time Siegel and Shuster themselves

tried to get the rights to Superman.

any of you have asked if we can

increase our range of ornamental Mgrasses in the garden centre – so I’m

pleased to tell you that we have. In fact we’ve

gone very grassy!

Ornamental grasses have been popular and well

used in the U.S. for many years but their

presence in gardens in Europe has largely been

attributed to the Dutch gardener, Piet Oudolf.

His whole style of gardening, using soft swathes

of grasses and perennials has been named

prairie planting and he makes great use of soft,

loose plantings which fully develop over summer

and into autumn.

For us Mediterranean gardeners, I think one of

the best things about this style of planting is that

it melds so seamlessly into the campo – like the

outside coming inside with a little more order,

but the wildness is still there. Grasses are great

because there are so many and I love their

swaying and flowing movements, jostling lightly

against their neighbours. According to selection

they can be used for screening, blending

together other plantings, they are lovely in pots

and they also make great focal points. In fact

their richness and variation means that they can

be used almost anywhere.

For us busy gardeners another great advantage

they have is that they are extremely easy care –

cut them down in very early spring, to about

15cm, and that is as onerous as it gets! Most will

become very drought resistant and pests leave

them alone. It doesn’t get much easier does it?

So, if you’re feeling tempted, here are some of

the best:

Pennisetum, fountaingrass: This mounding grass

takes its common name from its graceful

arching sways of foliage and plumes. They come

with either green or bronzed foliage and the

furry plumes can be creamy blonde, pink, red or

coffee coloured. Some self-seed freely and, in

parts of the world, have become classed as

invasive. Ranging in height from 1m to 2m, they

are one of the loveliest.

Festuca glauca, blue

fescue: This is one of the

smallest ornamental

grasses, to around 30cm

tall, and is, therefore, ideal

for smaller spaces, in pots,

as low groundcover or try

it as an edging plant. The

new foliage is a striking

steely-blue with matching

silvery-blue plumed flower

heads. It is the bluest of

the grasses and a lovely

contrast plant. It colours

up best under dry

conditions, so ideal for us.

Space plants 20cm apart

for dense ground cover

which will become very

drought resistant.

Stipa tenuissima, pony

A very refined and

beautiful grass, its bright green foliage erupts

upwards and soft blonde and feathery seed

heads mass and froth in waves. These can be cut

and used indoors but they are also much

appreciated by the birds. To around 60cm tall

and 30cm wide, it develops better in a slightly

damper ground than many other grasses but will

become drought tolerant when mature.

Carex is botanically a sedge rather than a grass,

but it is always loosely grouped with grasses.

They are tough and versatile plantings and there

are some very striking ones.

Carex buchananii ‘red rooster’, New Zealand

leatherleaf sedge. With rich copper-bronze

foliage which curls at the tips, this is one of the

most popular grasses. It will grow to around

60cm x 60cm and starts into growth tightly

vertical, opening up into a vase shape with dark

blonde plumes.

Carex comans, ‘bronze perfection’, New Zealand

hair sedge. The finely textured foliage fluctuates

between coral and orange, according to the light.

The large dark brown plumes produced in late

summer contrast perfectly. To 40cm high x

75cm wide, clumping.

Carex morrowii ‘ice

dance’, Japanese or

variegated sedge. This

grass has long shiny

leaves markedly striped

with bright white and

looks good at any time of

the year. It brightens up

any shady spot,

unusually, preferring to

be out of the sun. It

spreads slowly to form

good dense groundcover.

30cm high x 50cm wide.

The flowing locks of

grasses contrast perfectly

with spikey architectural

shapes such as yucca,

dracaena, phormium,

agave and aloe but if you

want to continue the

softer look, try mixing

some of these perennials

in with your grasses. The colours will swirl and

mix, rather like ice cream!

Verbena bonariensis (purpletop vervain),gaura

lindheimeri (whirling butterflies), sedum

spectabile (ice plant, butterfly plant) salvia

nemerosa (woodland sage), salvia mycrophylla

(blackcurrant sage), echinacea purpurea (purple

coneflower), rudbeckia fulgida (orange

coneflower), coreopsis (tickflower), gaillardia

(blanket flower), papaver (poppy), nepeta

mussinii (catmint) and tulbaghia violacea (sweet

garlic).

pparently a shingles epidemic has hit

town, as Karen relays the gory details of Athose struck down with this horrible

illness Andy starts to fidget, “I’ve been feeling a

bit off all week” he says, Karen asks if he has a

rash and promptly dashes upstairs to check.

This isn’t an unusual occurrence in our house.

Emotional contagion syndrome refers to those

who are compelled to mimic and synchronize

facial expressions, vocalizations, postures, and

movements with those of another. Folie à deux (a

madness shared by two) or shared psychotic

disorder is a psychiatric syndrome in which

symptoms of a delusional belief are transmitted

from one individual to another. But I’m not quite

sure what the correct name is for believing that

you have the same illness as everyone you come

into contact with. In our house I call it Extreme

Man Flu, although I believe Andy would rather it

had a title with syndrome on the end.

It would take me weeks to document my

husband’s many cases of Extreme Man Flu

(syndrome). I once came back from a visit to the

ladies in a restaurant to find him, trousers rolled

up, comparing knees with the man at the next

table. “Look at the lumps” they cried. His wife

and I rolled our eyes “they are meant to be lumpy

they’re knees” we replied. This was in the same

week that he had been to the doctors to see if he

had MS/ME and was too embarrassed to tell the

doctor that after banging his head on the car door

he believed that his ear was becoming detached

from his head.

When planning for a holiday I have a six month

check list that includes, book flights, organise

travel insurance, research locations, transport

and accommodation. Andy’s six month check list

is research local beers and read the “Health”

section of the relevant Lonely Planet travel

guide. At the one month checklist point I am

applying for visas, buying suntan lotion (or

thermal vests) and searching for last year’s

mosquito net (or woolly hats). Andy’s one month

checklist is re-read the “Health” section of the

Lonely Planet. Once on holiday he will

obsessively check for mosquito bites and as soon

as the first one appears he will be struck with

Man Flu

Page 27: The Grapevine Magazine May 2012

most of the symptoms associated with all of the

diseases in the previously read Lonely Planet

chapter. I find it best to tell him that he has

Japanese Encephalitis. It has a fairly short

gestation period, there is no treatment and it’s

usually fatal. So there’s no point in talking about

it we might as well get on and enjoy his last 48

hours.

And therein lies the problem of being sufferer of

Extreme Man Flu in our house. It’s me. I just

can’t be sympathetic. I blame my parents. I have

so little to blame on my parents they were on the

whole pretty perfect. Which is a terrible blight in

life; it means any faults or idiosyncrasies that I

have are absolutely mine and mine alone, so it’s

quite nice for something to be their fault for a

change. I don’t remember either of them ever

having a day’s illness until my Mum broke her

hip and as children we were never allowed to be

ill. Any gripes were caused by late nights, as we

got older late nights & tight jeans, and everything

was cured by early nights and/or Febrilex syrup,

which I assume was some kind of Paracetamol

concoction. Many times as I was throwing up in

the school nurses office she would ask “why did

you come to school today?” the answer was

always the same, my Mum said I’d be fine. If we

were sent home from school, there was no lying

on the settee watching TV (I’m not sure that

daytime TV had even been invented) or being

nursed with hot chicken soup and sympathy. You

went to bed and laid in a dark room until you

were better, every hour you had a teaspoon full

of water to stop you from getting de-hydrated.

My lack of illness empathy extends further than

to my husband. I remember clearly telling a

friend about a mutual friend who was a real

hypochondriac. “There is always something

wrong with her” I said “In the last 6 months, she

has broken the same finger twice, had hay fever,

an allergic reaction to her hay fever drugs, and

loads of migraines. “That’s not called

hypochondria” he told me. “That’s called bad

luck”

Man flu is no joke – especially if you are a woman

expected to provide constant sympathy & saintly

nursing. I do not doubt that Man Flu and

especially Extreme Man Flu syndrome are very

real and very unpleasant. However a recent

study by menthol lozenges manufacturer

Fisherman’s Friend found “Man flu’s a fairly

recent phenomenon that has emerged alongside

the ‘metrosexual male’,” the study points out that

“Men were real men when Fisherman’s Friend

lozenges were first created in 1865 to help relieve

extreme conditions on voyages. Those sailors

wouldn’t have got their wives to call their

captains to excuse them from their voyages just

because they were a bit out of sorts.” However

another article reports the” irrefutable scientific

fact” that Man Flu is more painful than

childbirth - based on a survey of over 100,000

men! A recent article in the Telegraph stated

“according to a study, the fairer sex should not

be so quick to accuse their partners of suffering

from Man Flu, because women are far better at

resisting bugs.” I just take that as further proof

that we are far better at everything - except

maybe wrestling.

A bout of Man Flu can often be diagnosed when

he cannot give you a concise breakdown of his

symptoms ‘it hurts everywhere’ or when you find

him poring over an A-Z guide to health problems

or trawling medical sites on the internet, with a

resulting rise in the number and severity of his

symptoms.

But mostly it will do you well to remember that

this is a competitive ailment, so if you point out

you suffered from the same thing but struggled

through and recovered expect the response “Oh,

but this is much worse.”

The Man Flu official web site (I kid you not)

describes the condition as “a crippling and

debilitating disorder indiscriminately striking

down male members of the human species

without warning.” It goes on to say that

“Extensive research has proven that the only way

to combat the crippling effects of Man Flu is

complete withdrawal to the sofa and

uninterrupted mollycoddling by the girlfriend /

wife.” Bearing this in mind, I think that my

husband’s only hope at combatting Man Flu is to

get himself a girlfriend. Another “scientific fact”

I read somewhere is that “More men die each

year from MFN (Man-Flu Neglect) than many

other serious conditions.” Once again it’s not

looking good for Andy.

Maybe I need to turn over a new leaf. Andy this

morning met a man with his leg in plaster and

already I can see that he is starting to limp.

Right. The new improved me is on the case.

Where did I put that Febrilex syrup?

Cudeca is a charitable organisation that provides

palliative care to advanced cancer sufferers

within the province of Malaga, helping over 5000

patients per year. It is made up of specialist

doctors and nurses who provide care and

attention to those who need it with support to the

family during treatment and after the loss of a

loved one. This care is completely free of

charge. Cudeca receives very little public

funding and therefore depends entirely on

initiatives for raising money. Last year’s event

raised 4100 euros; let’s see if we can beat that

amount for 2012, Cudeca’s 20th anniversary to

he arrival of our first grandchild in 2011

sent our travelling plans for the year into Tspasm, with the result that Merlin the

Motorhome was "mothballed" at our daughter's

home in Norfolk for most of the year, while we

drove up and down in a car and then back up

again for Christmas. After all the festivities,

which stretched well into January to take in my

husband's 60th. and our grandson's 1st.

birthdays,it was time to hit the road again and to

collect Merlin from the field he'd been sharing

with our son-in-law's cows. So we picked him up,

dusted him off and started all over again!

Not usually travelling in the middle of winter we

were a little apprehensive about the ferry

crossing, but all was well. The channel was like a

millpond and we arrived in Caen in darkness

after a calm night. We then became embroiled in

the early morning motorway madness as we

headed towards Alencon. Once out into the

countryside we were in a stark, grey winter

landscape, although the silhouettes of the bare

trees against the sky had a beauty all of their own.

The flat agricultural land was not unlike Norfolk,

and went on for miles. A little light relief was

when we were passing through a small village

south of Orleans. Each house on the main road

had a postbox mounted onto a gatepost in the

front garden, and there was obviously some

collaboration (not to mention some good-

humoured rivalry) between the neighbours as

each post had been decorated - some as people

(footballer, clown, milkmaid) and others as a

scarecrow, giant rabbit, windmill etc.) There was

even a pair of breasts -no prizes for guessing

where the bell-push was!

Our first stopover was at St. Pourcain-sur-Sioule,

where we parked next to the river. A pleasant

town which will be worth more of a look another

time when it isn't quite so cold. On to Clermont-

Ferrand and into fog and frozen trees. It wasn't

until we were driving through the blue-grey misty

hills of the Cevennes that the sun came out and

the day became altogether more pleasant. Into the

Tarn region now and we were soon swept up and

over the mighty Millau Viaduct that soars over

the valley way down below. This bridge is a

magnificent feat of engineering. It was

constructed from both sides of the valley and

when the two pieces met in the middle, the

measurements were only out by 3 millimetres.

Incredible!

Winter Wanderings Part 1

Page 35: The Grapevine Magazine May 2012

On down into Languedoc/Roussillon, where our

guidebook told us of an aire at the spa town of

Balaruc-les-Bains, near Beziers. Well, what a

find! The parking place was actually in the car

park of a thermal spa, which looked very swish.

We thought that it would do for an overnight stop,

so we parked up and decided to take the dog for

her walk. We could see a small path by the side

of a building so went along it,only to find

ourselves at the edge of a huge etang (inland

saltwater lake). It was so peaceful. Steam was

rising from a rockpool edged with white boulders

and the water was bath temperature. We could

hear atmospheric "panpipe" music coming from

the spa, there was bamboo growing by the pool

and, to top it all, we watched the most amazing

sunset over the water of pink, orange and gold -

all very Zen. We woke up to sunshine and frost

and continued on past more etangs, all strung

across with oyster nets. Oyster farming is big

business in this area.

The sun continued to shine as we drove around

Narbonne and the salt lakes. All this area is

protected land and is a magnet for birdwatchers.

With the snow-capped Pyrennees in the distance

it made for a very picturesque setting. Our next

stop was at the resort of Leucate Plage, deserted

at this time of the year, but good for a bracing

walk along the beach. We then called in at the

town of Banyuls-sur-Mer- very smart, very

touristy, very expensive -but there was nowhere

for us to park so we moved on to Port-Vendres,

where we had stayed previously. Charles Rennie

Mackintosh, the Scottish architect and designer,

lived here in the 1920s in the last years of his life.

He was also an artist, and he did several

watercolours of the village and coastline,

reproductions of which are dotted in and around

the port and coastal walks. He maintained that

the happiest days of his life were spent here, and

his ashes were scattered in the harbour at his

request. It was while we were here that we had a

phone call to tell us a family bereavement, so we

made the decision to turn Merlin around and head

back to Cornwall.

Not wanting to retrace our steps entirely, we

chose a different route for the return journey. We

were now heading into Cathar country, a beautiful

area of wooded hillsides dotted with the ruins of

castles and fortresses built in and around the

twelfth century. The Cathars were free-thinkers

who based themselves in this corner of France

and stood against the established church and

feudal laws of the time. Their refusal to conform

angered the power base of the north, held by the

nobility and the church. Armies were amassed

and sent down, but it took many years of torture

and massacre before the brutal north regained

control. (For a factual-based work of fiction about

the Cathars read "Labyrinth" by Kate Mosse). The

most impressive city of the region is undoubtedly

Carcassonne, with its walled and turreted Cite

rising, grey and sombre, above all the other

buildings and visible from quite a distance before

you reach the outskirts of the city itself.

Onwards and upwards, we kept getting glimpses

of the Canal du Midi, which runs between

Toulouse and Adge on the Mediterranean. Not a

barge or narrow boat in sight in January, but I

remember watching a Rick Stein cookery series

when he travelled along the canal and thinking

what an idyllic way to spend time. One day! The

town of Souillac on the River Dordogne is a

delightful place. In the prettiest of settings, it is

worth spending at least a day here to wander

around the streets or go for a longer walk along

the river, or to visit the Museum of Automation

next to the twelfth-century Church of Sainte

Marie. Further along from Souillac, in a parking

area next to the road, is an eye-catching art

installation that you just have to stop and have a

look at. It is a huge, and I mean huge, glass-

fronted box filled with an assortment of everyday

objects-shoes,bottles,bicycles,typewriters etc.etc.

The piece is called "Stele de 3eme Millenaire" by

Christian Verdun, and the information board

describes it as a message for the future. Possibly

about entropy, and things going nowhere? Who

knows!

We found ourselves heading back into the cold

and frozen north now and, seemingly, back in

time as it was like driving through a Christmas

card - an impression reinforced when we saw two

reindeer in a snowy field. Also, houses and

villages all along the way still had all their

decorations up, and not just because they hadn't

got round to taking them down, but still in all

their lit-up glory. A friend who lives in France

told us that it is usual practice to keep them up

for most of January. Maybe it helps to dispel the

gloom of this dark month. The song "I'm walking

backwards to Christmas" seemed appropriate in

the circumstances, which I found going round in

my head until we reached Caen and the ferry.

Part 2 next month

Jan Rowlands.

strenuous and hard fought dart’s season

finally came to an end at the beginning of AMarch and as always the season was

packed full of incident. Dave Dawson nearly

bought a round of drinks, Aurelio Perez almost

managed to play for three different teams in a

season, Kelly Kelsey and Geoff Etheridge played

a doubles match without arguing and Ken

England managed to hit the board with all three

darts. As a result, his team, Pavo Real, will play

next season without the need for protective

glasses.

Thoughts turned to the trophy presentation night,

which had special significance this year,

following the sad passing of our friend and

colleague, Aden Penn. Aden had previously

played for La Casona in the dart’s league and it

was thought a fitting tribute to rename the

winner’s trophy in his memory, The Aden Penn

Memorial Trophy. This would be a permanent

reminder of Aden who encapsulated everything

that the dart’s league is about – a night out with

friends, a game of darts, a few beers and most

importantly playing for fun. Aden certainly

played in that spirit.

So a number of highly tuned dart’s athletes

trooped off at the end of March to El Pilon

restaurant for the presentation of trophies and

medals. The evening was well attended and we

were all very pleased to welcome Aden’s Mum,

who had flown over from the UK as well as his

sister, Sophie and brother Louis.

The first winners of the Aden Penn Memorial

Trophy were La Peña Amigos so congratulations

to them – Dennis Haslam, Mick Lewis, Peter

Pointer, Paul Burgin, Allison Taylor , Colin

Jeffery, Terry and Sue Keely.

Trophies and medals were also handed out in

various other categories including best bar food

during the season, which went to our hosts for the

presentation night, El Pilon. Well done and thanks

to them for hosting the evening.

Winners in other categories were as follows:-

Most checkouts (female) – Allison Taylor (24).

Maximum 180 scored – Paco (Archez), Dave Dawson, Geoff Etheridge, Colin Jeffrey and Pete Forness..

use. Sarah & David have made this possible by setting up a registered, specialist, advertising agency

supporting people to sell their property privately.

There is another bonus - sellers pay NO commission when the property sells!

What is so different about Creative Property Marketing?

www.creativepropertymarketing.com

reative Property Marketing is the brainchild of English expats, David & Sarah Rick -

experienced property professionals who have spent more than 30 years in the property Cindustry in Spain, the UK and across the globe.

Having successfully marketed and sold properties in the Malaga area for the past 5 years, Sarah and

David knew where best to advertise property in order to find the buyers. It was time the private

seller had access to the knowledge of the estate agent and could advertise in the same places.

The dawn of a

property marketing

revolution...

Creative Property Marketing supports private sellers to sell their properties

but are not estate agents.

0% commission is charged when a property is sold.

Those advertising through Creative are private sellers.

The seller pays just €245 plus IVA for 12 months to advertise on: Right Move and Prime

Location (UK based), Kyero and Think Spain (Spain based).

Combined, the property portals reach millions of potential buyers on a weekly basis from

around the world.

The seller can take control and load their own property onto the Creative website or if the

seller prefers, Creative will do this for them.

The Creative website has a Property Search section for buyers that gives them a lot more

information than is normally available – detailed description, annual IBI payment, monthly

running costs, if a mortgage is transferrable, the exact location of the property via Google

Maps/Satellite and large photos. Buyers love it!

Creative receive the initial enquiries from buyers then passes them onto the sellers with

comments.

English speaking sellers communicate directly with English speaking buyers.

If sellers want to compete in the market place, they have the option to reduce their selling

price as they have no commission to pay.

The Creative website offers extensive, free support and information to both sellers and

buyers.

No, not entirely, only two of the portals accept private sellers directly (at a very different

cost) and the others only take advertising through advertising agencies like ours or through

estate agents.

Sellers can use Creative Property Marketing alongside estate agents. (Selling privately

should not affect any sole agency or exclusivity agreements).

If preferred, Creative will list the seller’s property for them at no extra cost - phone and they

will help you.

When sellers want complete control over how their property is listed - sellers can simply load

their own property onto the Creative website and edit at any time.

All properties/up-dates/changes are automatically fed to the portals on a daily basis.

In the last 5 years of selling property in the Malaga province, Sarah & David found that at

least 95% of foreign buyers spoke English when enquiring about a property. Therefore,

English speaking buyers communicate with English speaking sellers.

Why should Andalucia be any different?

With Creative Property Marketing, they make it possible for you...

Can’t sellers simply use the portals themselves without Creative?

What happens if I am using an estate agent?

Love or hate computers – whichever way, there is no problem listing your property with Creative:

Sellers & buyers communicate easily:

Around the world, the internet is now becoming the number 1 way to sell and buy property:

No commission to spoil the view...

odo Casa is an innovative service

developed to look after the needs and Trequirements of managing your holiday

home. The service is highly flexible offering a

bespoke service to meet your own individual

requirements. We can offer anything from a

complete holiday rental service dealing with the

marketing and promotion of your home for

rental, dealing with changeovers, pool cleans,

maintenance and repairs to a basic “wellbeing”

service checking on your property periodically,

providing peace of mind and security that your

property is in good repair while your property is

vacant.

We provide a full changeover and laundry

service for your rental guests or if you do not let

your property we can simply arrange a clean

prior to your arrival. We can also arrange the

purchase of groceries to lighten the burden on

either yourselves or your guests.

It is paramount that your pool is maintained to a

high standard to ensure safe and problem free

bathing. We will carry out full pool clean once or

twice a week during the hot summer months and

weekly or fortnightly during the winter months

unless your pool is covered during this time. In

this event we would visit periodically as dictated

such as extreme weather conditions e.g.

prolonged heavy rain to ensure the water level

does not overflow, heavy winds to ensure

security of the pool cover and mid-season

chemical top-up.

We also offer a project management service

whereby we can arrange and oversee any works

you may require on your property. This is

particularly useful for people who are not

resident here permanently and who do not want

to spend their valuable holiday time at their

property arranging this themselves and living

through the disruption this can cause.

All of our services are offered as a regular

arrangement or as and when you might require

eg if you are going on holiday for a period and

you require any of our services while you are

away.

ooking for something different to

do for a day? Have you got visitors Lto entertain? Do want see the

glorious mountain scenery? Don’t want to

hire a car but want to go inland?

Buggy Tours is the solution!

Buggy Tours owner, Roland, has spent a

year researching the idea having seen it

run successfully in Estepona, Marbella

and Mijas. However, he explained that his

buggies are far superior and with a larger

engine size allowing a more comfortable

ride, especially important for the older

age group. . His excursions are aimed at

all ages groups from 5 to 70, he is fully

licensed and insured. For Roland both

your enjoyment and safety is important.

Buggy Tours first started in December

last year and now he has all nationalities

and people travelling form the other side

of Malaga to take part in his excursion.

The trip starts from his home in

Frigiliana and from there to Achebuchal

and into Competa and the National Park

and through the river. He was keen to say

that the excursion is NOT a rally it is a

fun way to see the scenery and sights of

Andalucia.

The buggies seat two people, so a parent

and a child passenger are possible so this

excursion can be enjoyed by the whole

family. It would also make an excellent

birthday present or fun day out for the

boys or girls!!

The 500cc buggies are new, safe and

comfortable even along the rural

mountain tracks. The tour takes around

31/2 hours and can be booked by the

contact details on the advert opposite.

Roland has finally settled in the Nerja

area after four years of travelling around

to different places. He loves it here and

can’t wait to take you out and show you

the sights of the area where he has chosen

to settle. He speaks English, Dutch,

German and Spanish so communicating

wont be a problem either.

On the last Sunday before

Torrox celebrates its Festival of Migas. Migas is

a typical dish made from fried breadcrumbs,

green peppers and chorizo and is a traditional

dish from the region. Thousands of visitors

attend every year and there is wine, music and

dancing to wash down this very calorific but

delicious dish.

The cuisine in Torrox is typical of the Axarquia

region; specialties include Ajoblanco con Uvas

(Garlic Soup with Grapes), Chota a la Cazadora

(Kid in Almond Sauce), Cordero Asado al Horno

(Roast Marinated Lamb) and sweet Churros,

fried dough sticks, a bit like donuts, dipped in

hot chocolate, delicious!

TorroxMejor Clima

he area of Torrox is made up of four urban

areas namely Torrox Costa, El Morche, El TPeñoncillo and Torrox village.

Torrox village is located just 4 kilometres inland

and is a popular tourist destination during the

summer for those looking to stay in more

traditional surroundings, yet be close to the

attractions on the coast.

The village clings to a steep

slope and has retained its

Moorish feel, with its

whitewashed houses and pretty

narrow streets. It is also boasts a

beautiful view down to the coast.

The main plaza, or square, is

popular meeting place for locals

and a lovely spot to sit and

watch the world go by. On the road into the main

Plaza a new business has recently opened

Cambridge 800 see page 60 for more information.

If you are looking to move to the area and want to

find a place to live or rent, Country Properties

Estate Agents are just off the main plaza. They

will be of great help to you, you can find their

contact details on page 11.

There was once a Moorish castle that sat above

the village, but sadly it was destroyed. There are

some other interesting architectural examples

such as the 16th century Mudejar church of

Nuestra Señorea de la Encarnación and the

Shrine and Convent of the Virgin de las Nieves.

Page 55: The Grapevine Magazine May 2012

The Phoenicians and Greeks carried out commercial activities along the 8 kilometres of coastline.

However, it was the Romans who founded the important factory-town at the mouth of the River

Argentino, meaning "silver river" (on a site now known as Punta de Torrox or Faro de Torrox). In

755 Prince Omeya Abd-el-Rhaman settled in Torrox, leading his followers from here to Cordoba,

where he founded the independent Emirate. During the Andalusi-Arabic period, Torrox was known

throughout the Mediterranean for the production and sale of silk fabrics, sugar cane plantations, oil,

almonds and figs.

At the time of the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487, Torrox consisted of three

neighbouring hamlets -Alhaguer, Almedina and Alhandac- protected by Torrox Castle.

The capture of Torrox by the Christians did not come until 1488, after a brief spell during which the

Moslem leader El-Zagal took control of the town and its castle. The area's population fell as its

Morisco (Moslem converts to Christianity) inhabitants fled in the face of the difficult living

conditions imposed by their new governors. The situation of those who stayed behind worsened

daily, until open rebellion broke out. The moriscos established a stronghold at Peñon de Frigiliana

Castle, where they successfully resisted the first attacks by forces sent by the governor of Velez-

Malaga Arevalo de Zuarzo. The uprising was not subdued until reinforcements sent by sea under

Don Luis de Requesens, High Commander of Castile, landed on the beaches of Torrox and laid siege

to Frigiliana Castle, causing over 2,400 rebel deaths. The High Commander of Castile ordered the

destruction of the castle, which was reduced to ashes. In 1570, the process of expelling the moriscos

was completed; the land confiscated from them was redistributed among Old Christian settlers.

Another important episode in the town's history occurred during the War of Independence (1810-12),

when, on withdrawing from Torrox, Napoleon's troops blew up the castle, which was left in ruins.

The town and its municipal area were shaken by the major tremor known as the Andalusian

Earthquake on Christmas Day 1884 and extensive material damage was suffered. On 20 January

1885, a concerned King Alfonso XIII visited the area, staying in the building which today houses

Torrox's Cultural Centre.

There was a sugar cane exploitation in the more prosperous times in the 19th century, and a number

of the town's most noteworthy houses and buildings date back to this era, such as the sugar factory

which was built in 1890.

d and Erik first came to southern Spain 5

years ago. On advice of a Spanish friend Athey explored the Andalucian area by

car. One of the places they visited was Competa

and initial impressions were “wow”, they loved

it. Over the next few years they kept coming

back to explore Andalucia and each time they

kept returning to the Competa area.

Erik owned shops in Belgium selling designer

household items, however with the recession

came the decline in top end sales. This combined

with exploring Andualcia lead to a desire of a

more permanent move and a new ambition of

starting a B&B. They continued their exploration

of Andualcia whilst preparing for this move.

This meant closing down their shops and for an

interim period Erik went back to being a

Kitchen designer and Ad back to

his old profession of Nursing.

Ad had lost an enormous amount

of weight using the Cambridge

Weight Plan and then went on to

work for Cambridge in Belgium.

He spent 90% of his time nursing

in hospitals and 10% of his time

working for Cambridge Weight

Plan. Between June and August

last year Ad and Erik came to

Spain looking to buy, however

they found the viewing process,

whilst on holiday, with limited time extremely

difficult, so they took the plunge, sold up anyway

and came out to rent.

Ad and Erik are now currently in the process of

buying their home in Competa which hasn’t been

straight forward but in the meantime have set

up Cambridge Weight Plan based in Torrox. Ad

is a real testament to the success of this diet

and with his nursing qualifications he hopes to

provide a workable solution to those who want to

loose weight in this area. Once settled in Spain

Ad contacted Cambridge Weight Plan UK asking

them if they planned to expand to Spain and

the answer was yes, but they were not sure

when. However in Jan 2012 Cambridge Weight

Plan did expand to the Costa del

Sol, so both Ad and Erik went on

a course in Mijas to become

consultants. Ad feels his

combination of personal weight

loss experience and nursing

credentials, specialised in the

field of diabetes gives him

excellent qualifications to aid

people to loose weight sensibly

and with full support.

Cambridge is a 5 step weight

plan. Where you start on these

steps depends on how much weight you have to

loose. The ultimate goal is to reach step 5 “My

normal life” where a target weight has been

reached but you visit the centre

weekly for support. The first consultation is 20

euros and each weekly support session is free

thereafter the shakes, and soups are 2euro

10cents which you can buy from the centre in

Torrox.

It was a pleasure to meet Ad and Erik and we

wish them every success in their business

remember mine well; I was really nervous.

She asked me how old I was; I lied and told Iher I was 18. It was over really quickly and

afterwards she breathlessly asked me if I would

like another one. I replied “Yes please love and

can I have a bag of cheese and onion crisps as

well?”

Well I have no idea what you filthy lot thought I

was writing about, but I am referring to my first

time buying a beer in a pub. The reason the

barmaid was breathless was that she had just

hauled a crate of ale Holsten Pils up from the

cellar. My friend and I soon found out the

barmaid’s name was Babs. Had we been more

observant we would have noticed the name

crudely tattooed onto her forearm just

underneath the tattoo of the anchor.

Most drinkers in pubs often joke about ugly

barmaids and how they knew they had had

enough when they began to fancy her. In Babs’

case I knew that when I began to fancy her I was

going to be sick. I did not know it at the time but

Babs would reappear once again in my life, but

more about that and her later.

Clutching our second pints of lager my friend

and I went and sat at a vacant table. The table

was dangerously close to the dance floor. I say

dangerous because like all pubs the White Hart

in Bletchley had its own rules fiercely observed

by the locals. Now I know the mean streets of

Bletchley are not exactly the Bronx but looking

back Dale and I were brave to be in this

particular pub on a Friday night dressed like

punks at the age of 17. The man dancing on the

dance floor was clearly oblivious to the pub

rules too; the first rule being “No men dancing

on the dance floor”. As he walked towards the

bar to quench his thirst after his not-too-shabby

John Travolta impression one of the regulars

tapped him on the shoulder; as Travolta turned

he punched him in the face sending him

sprawling into our table and completely

flattening it. We sat table-less holding our pints

of lager, terrified. We quickly left but the lure of

the White Hart was too great. We may get

beaten up, but at least we were getting served.

The next time we were there another fight broke

out, this time outside. Somebody ran in and said

“there’s a fight outside”. We were unsure whom

he was addressing but quickly found out as Babs

threw down her glass cloth, rolled up her sleeves

and barched outside. We followed in time to see

her grab the two scrapping Herberts by the

scruffs of the neck and hold them apart before

shouting at them to stop, which they duly did.

As we ourselves turned into regulars the rest of

the drinkers in the pub came to accept us

despite our admittedly awful messy clothing and

spiky hair. One night a man at the bar asked me

what I did for a living; “I’m an electronics

engineer” I replied before he comically choked

on his pint. The lesson being of course is not to

judge a book by its (ripped) cover.

Do you remember the first time?

I do not want to give the impression that there

were lots of fights at the White Hart; the two

described above are the only ones that spring to

mind. In fact most of the time we had good times

there. I recall one night we were in the bar that

had a pool table in, (I always get confused about

lounge bars, public bars saloons etc) there was

also a jukebox and one night somebody put on

It’s not unusual by Tom Jones; spontaneously

what felt like the whole bar was on a table or on

the pool table gyrating around Tom Jones style.

What a great night.

A few years later I had moved and the White

Hart was no longer my local pub. The company I

worked for as an electronics engineer

occasionally took on contract staff during busy

periods. One day I was introduced to a new

contractor; it was Babs. Obviously a woman with

hidden talents and it turned out she was a dab-

hand with a soldering iron. As with a lot of

people, as you get to know them you realise the

way they present themselves to the world is just

a front. Working with Babs on a daily basis it

became clear she was a caring, intelligent

person – I still would not have wanted to cross

her though! It just goes to show you should not

judge a book…..oh, we’ve already done that

haven’t we?

The White Hart no longer exists; it became part

of the Hungry Horse chain before being burned

down in 2009 by arsonists (the mean street of

Bletchley again). In February of this year

planning permission was granted to turn the site

into a mental health unit. It is probably best I do

not visit. They would probably not let me out.

I just feel the need to say that all of the above is

true. I did consider changing Babs’ name but it

just would not have been the same. Fans of the

comedy show The League of Gentlemen may see

a similarity between my Babs and their tattooed

character that drives Babs’ Cabs. I can only

presume this is purely coincidental; either that

or Mark Gatiss or one of his co-writers of the

show were in Bletchley on a table dancing to

Tom Jones in the early 1980s.

ith freestanding garden walls, more

emphasis can be put on the look and Wenhancement of the garden. Using

locally sourced natural stone can help create a

look of distinction to dress and enhance, and may

also be a requirement of local building

regulations.

Freestanding walls allow for greater flexibility in

terms of material choice and aesthetic outcome

and are often less expensive than retaining walls

(where strength is the main concern). However, a

common assumption that is made is that

freestanding walls should be low cost, as they

don’t need to be as strong.

To save on costs, builders often create

freestanding walls with footings that are not

robust enough, leading to wall movement due to

subsidence or heave. They neglect to take into

account the land structure, making the footings

superficial at best. This should be a major

concern, even more so if your house is built in an

area where the soil type is clay. In the winter the

.

.

soil will expand as it takes on water and in the

dry summer months the soil will contract. This

constant movement of the subsoil will result in

walls losing their integrity, cracks forming and in

time the wall collapsing.

At LT Construction, we focus equally on the

structural specification as well as the aesthetic

concerns of freestanding walls. In doing so, we

consider any such projects as major works in

their own right, and will design and build walls

which are very attractive and able to stand the

test of time.

Please bear in mind that a building license would

be required for any walling. We at LT

Construction would apply and see you through

this often-frustrating process.

Visit our website at: www.ltconstruction.es to see

various examples of Freestanding Garden Wall

design.

Let LT Construction be your first choice when calling on expert advice in designing your garden walls.

ur long Spanish spring frustrates and

annoys us with the rain we so often hope Oto escape. But we shouldn't be too

grumpy about April showers (or downpours or

thunderstorms). Along with full reservoirs,

fertile fields and happy farmers, they bring us a

countryside wild with wildflowers. You can find

field edges boasting dozens of pink butterfly

orchids, hillsides crammed with pink dog roses

and the delicate star-like flowers of white

asphodels growing right up over the mountains'

sides.

In a faintly nerdy way (think twitcher rather

than trainspotter, though) I like to know my

Ramping Fumitory from my Purple Viper's

Bugloss. So when something catches my eye on a

walk I try to look it up. Now reference books are

always frustrating things because they are never

compiled in such a way that they do what you

want them to do: tell you the flower's name,

immediately and emphatically. There are flower

books compiled in alphabetical order – very

useful if you already know the name of the

flower. There are flower books compiled by

colour of flower, which is helpful…if only the

damn flowers would stop having so many

variants. As Mendel found out (the monk who

worked out the first principles of genetics from

messing about with plants) sweet peas are good

at coming up with a ludicrous variety of colours,

coils, and types. And they are not the only ones.

My book of Mediterranean flowers is much more

sophisticated. It has a sort of map to help you

identify the plant family, genus, species and

subspecies, then lists the page numbers you'll

find the final flower on. It has a list of technical

terms at the back to make sure you know your

rhizome (a creeping underground stem) from

your runner (a 'stolon' that grows above ground),

and your calyx (the outermost 'whorl' of a

flower) from your corolla (the innermost 'whorl'

of a flower). It also uses the word “usually”

rather a lot: “usually mainly pink” or “usually

this plant is listed as Euphorbia, but this time we

thought we'd try the old English name of

Spurge” or “this orchid is usually variable and

has at least 3 subspecies…some of which some

authors treat as separate species”

Amazingly this book even recommends a

botanist kit, including a sophisticated camera, a

hand lens for magnification, pen and notebook

and envelopes for storing snipped off samples.

Now, generally knowing your plants is seen as

knowing something about the countryside –

acceptably interesting rather than too nerdy (see

the reference to train spotting, above), – but this

is definitely a step too far. I just want the

flower's name, damn it!

I recommend cheating. Get an idea of some of

the 'families' – things that grow from bulbs are

separate from, say, shrubs with pretty flowers

with petals. And then – scan through the

photographs in your preferred book to see if you

can spot your flower. It usually comes close

enough!

If you prefer a challenge see if you can find

some Thapsia Villosa, some Tassel Hyacinth,

some Borage and some Helicrysum Italicum!

And then forget it all and go for a walk. These

fantastic plants will soon be withering away to

nothing in the heat. Right now a walk in the

country is like walking into an impressionist

painting. With or without the names they are

beautiful. Looking through the rusty grill of an

old fence at a tiny meadow thick with daisies,

poppies, wild pea and columbine I said it looked

like something out of a film. “No,” replied my

companion, “It looks like paradise.”

"What would you like?" says the barman.

"What would I like?" says Bob. "A bigger house, more money and a more attractive wife."

"No," says the barman, patiently. "I meant what do you want?"

"To win the lottery, for my mother-in-law to die and for my child to be born healthy!"

"What's it to be?" says the barman, less patiently.

"A boy or a girl, I don't care."

"You misunderstand me," says the barman, impatiently, “I only asked what you want to drink."

"Oh," says Bob, "I see. Why didn't you say so? What have you got?"

"Nothing at all," says the barman. "I'm perfectly healthy.”

JESUSA Sunday school teacher is concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus, so he asks his class, "Where is Jesus today?"

Steven raises his hand and says, "He's in Heaven."

Mary answers, "He's in my heart."

Little Johnny waves his hand furiously and blurts out, "He's in our bathroom!"

The surprised teacher asks Little Johnny how he knows this.

"Well," Little Johnny says, "every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?

A policeman pulled me over last night."Do you know why I've stopped you, sir?" he asked.I said, "Yes, you saw me talking on my mobile phone.""That's right" he said, "Are you insured?"I said, "I don't know to be honest, you'll have to ask Movistar.”
