St. Louis Hills President’s Address / by Chris Murphey

Hi Everyone! I wish to extend a very friendly and energetic hello to all the Residents, Renters, Business Owners, Neighbors, New Families, Legacy Families & Friends of Saint Louis Hills. As I write this first address, I reflected on my time in the neighborhood, and I challenged myself to think of one person in the neighborhood that would identify with only one of these aforementioned terms. I failed to do so, and it is my belief that this inability embodies the sense of fellowship that comes with living in our great neighborhood. Before I get to far ahead, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself, to introduce the SLHNA Board and to discuss our areas of focus for the year.

I took office as the President of the Saint Louis Hills Neighborhood Association (SLHNA) on Jan 1, 2016 - an honor I thank you all for bestowing upon me and one I intend to take seriously. I look forward to ushering the rich history, value and tradition of SLHNA and the neighborhood into the next few years of my term. Everyone should take a moment to thank John Burghoff for leading this organization for the past two years. If you don’t know John personally, then let me take a minute to tell you he is a model neighbor and resident. He is on the front and back lines of everything the association does, he is one of the first people to volunteer to make an event successful and he should be an inspiration to you all. While John’s guidance and model actions are a great help, I couldn’t do this without the support of my family and our selfless SLHNA Board. My wonderful wife Liz and my captivating son Noah are graciously allowing me to spend time away from them to serve this neighborhood. They are also taking part in the events and opportunities to get involved... Ok, Liz is and Noah is in training! In addition to my wonderful family at home, I have another family in the board of SLHNA. Each member of the board gives their time to make this happen and they do it because of one incentive - to enrich the lives of us all as neighbors and to create shared value in and around our neighborhood. Each of their names and roles are listed below, and I encourage you to engage them. Take time to discuss ways that you can get involved in their direct area of responsibility, and take time to thank them for all they do. Additionally, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or anyone one of the board members with any ideas you have for new roles or responsibilities within the association. This year I have issued a challenge to the current board to continually improve the association in both what we do to serve to the neighborhood and the way we serve each other. Amidst continuing the traditions set out before us and working hard to put on or support the events that make this neighborhood great, the board is working on updating the association by-laws, creating more governance regarding financial operations, engaging the neighborhood in new and exciting ways and working to establish a junior board to aid in succession planning. If you have not done so already, I encourage you take a minute to sign up for email updates by visiting our website (www.stlhills.com) and entering your name and email in a very short form on the home page. We continue to use this method of communication to reach everyone in an efficient and timely manner with news, information and opportunities to get involved.Looking forward to all that we will achieve together.

16th Ward Update / by Donna Baringer, 16th Ward Alderman

Francis Park is the heart of the 16th ward. It is exciting to see the many improvements which are a result of the 2011 Comprehensive Park Plan. Since then we have: built new tennis courts, solved the water and flooding issues, rehabbed the tiny house which has a coffee shop (Lanai Coffee), resurfaced the playground, planted a natural habitat area, updated the liner in the lily pond, added two dog-friendly drinking fountains, updated the softball field to state of the art with irrigation and most recently installed all new LED lights. This is an impressive list of improvements and with our ongoing collaborations with groups fundraising in and around the park, we can expect more improvements.

The new influx of successful events and increased usage inside the park will require more parking. Pedestrian-friendly crossings and slowing car traffic were also found to be priorities in the 2014 traffic study. The study revealed that the highest rate of speed occurred on Eichelberger and the highest average speed was 38 mph on Donovan. Slowing down the drivers would require a fulltime traffic officer to run radar and our police department does not have that kind of manpower. Our traffic commissioner and street study have educated us. Now we are aware that to address speeding, streets must be reconfigured so cars are forced to slow down. The goals are to change the habits of drivers cutting through side streets when there are more suitable arterial streets to use and secondly slowing all traffic. Our neighborhood continues to grow with young families who are rehabbing homes, in some cases building new homes or enlarging their living space. Changing our streets to a more pedestrian and family-friendly environment helps keep our neighborhood attractive and vibrant.

The St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association’s Business Committee works very closely with City Officials and area Aldermen to attract and retain quality community businesses. We are a volunteer committee of four, all having a diverse background in real estate, small business management and banking. We also consult with various Business Associations and a sub-advisory committee which is comprised of local business owners before making recommendations to the SLHNA Board. We see our primary role as vetting neighborhood businesses on behalf of residents. I think we can all agree that having successful, community-minded neighborhood merchants, positively impacts our quality of life. The Business committee plans to highlight a neighborhood business with each issue of the Newsletter. This issue features: Dados Café, located at 5425 Hampton. Gus Botonis (chef) and Nick Avouris (Owner) opened Dados a few months ago. They are cousins from the beautiful island of Zakynthos, Greece and have 30+ years of experience in the hospitality industry. They discussed their restaurant for years before coming across the right location and opened Dados in the fall of 2015.

We are very excited to welcome them into the neighborhood! This place is perfect for family dinning. Their menu caters to the lover of Greek-Cuisine (gyros, grape leaves, moussaka…etc…), but is also diversified and certainly appeals to a more Americana pallet (burgers, salads, pizza…etc..). They also have a wonderful Brunch on Sundays. If you’re looking for a clean, family-friendly place to eat, check it out. Opa! Dados Café Website:www.dados-cafe.com

David R. Francis Fundraising KickoffDONATE NOW! says Rick Palank

On Christmas Eve of 1916, a man dressed as Santa Claus delivered a deed for sixty acres of land, donated by David R. Francis, as a Christmas gift to the City of St. Louis. Those sixty acres now comprise the park in St. Louis Hills that bears his name. In light of the popularity of Francis Park, and the millions of people who over the years have enjoyed the Park, the St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association and the Friends of Francis Park believe that it is important to honor David R. Francis on the 100th year anniversary of his donation to the City by placing a statue of David Francis in Francis Park. The internationally known sculptor, Harry Weber, has been commissioned to create this statue. Many of his works can be seen in the St. Louis area, at Busch Stadium, the Old Courthouse, the riverfront, and many more. Harry was born in St. Louis in 1942, graduated from St. Louis Country Day (now MICDS), and graduated from Princeton University. He is a Vietnam Veteran. We are seeking donations from area businesses and residents. As explained in the brochure (see link below), donations from $100 to $5,000 are encouraged. A donation of $250 or more will memorialize your donation as follows:a. $5,000 or more: Your name engraved in the bronze plaque that will be attached to the base of the statueb. $1,000 to $5,000: Your name engraved on a bronze brick that will be at the base of the statuec. $250 to $1,000: Your name engraved on a clay brick that will be at the base of the statue. We are also issuing a “brick challenge.” We would like to secure 100 donations of $250 - $1,000, immortalizing your family or business name in the history of Francis Park, as well as the City of St. Louis. For more information, including the DRF statue brochure and donation details, please go to:www.drfstatue.orgAll donations are tax-deductible.

This will be a brand new addition to our newsletter. It will feature residents of St. Louis Hills, why they moved here, and why they love St. Louis Hills. If you have suggestions, please submit them to the editor!Featuring:Dan Harbaugh, President of Ronald McDonald House, and family.

Recently, I had lunch with a woman who moved from Brooklyn to St Louis about a year ago. She had lived her whole life in New York, and she and her husband with their two children now live in University City. I asked her if she likes living in St. Louis, and she stated they do very much. Her only complaint was how much she misses having a shoe repair store in her neighborhood where she could go get a purse or pair of shoes repaired and trust the quality and cost of the repair. She misses not having a market/butcher where she could walk in and tell him that she was having a dinner party this weekend for x amount of people and have the butcher pick out the perfect piece of meat and tell her how to prepare it. She misses not having a hardware store where the owner knew how to fix everything and she could take any item in there and be advised on how to fix it or what needed to be done. As she went on and on about the things she misses, I told her, “You need to come visit St Louis Hills as we have all those amenities (and many more) in our neighborhood.”I grew up in South County and

moved into the City over 30 years ago. When my wife and I got married, we bought a house in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood and have lived in this community for over 24 years. We have raised two children during this time. We have always enjoyed walking to the Park(s), enjoying the many local activities and knowing almost all of our neighbors. When our daughter was in high school and before she could drive, many of her friends who lived in the County wanted to spend weekends at our house. They could walk to Target, Ted Drewes, the park or even to other friends’ homes in the neighborhood. They could not do this where they lived.

When we have friends who live in Chesterfield or West County visit our home, we hear comments such as “Wow, I did not know a neighborhood like this existed in the City.”Living in St. Louis Hills offers so much; great neighbors, beautiful homes, locally owned businesses, wonderful dining, spectacular parks and so much more. Yes, St. Louis Hills is a hidden gem that we are very fortunate to have found. And oh by the way, the lady who moved here from New York has recently engaged a real estate agent to look for a home in St. Louis Hills.

of activity throughout the neighborhood, and it is good to see the effort being put forth. I did not know the chance of waking up with an Award sign in your yard had such an effect!!! LOL! Whatever the reason, St. Louis Hills neighbors, keep up the good work!A total of 12 yards will win the award. We are going to abandon the Backyard Awards and the Best Block Awards. There will most likely be other enhanced changes to the awards for this year, as we want to stimulate the pride and enthusiasm for winning the St. Louis Hills Best Lawn & Garden Award. If you are interested, I have a great connection for shredded hard wood mulch. These guys have been in the neighborhood delivering mulch for several years. They drop wheelbarrow bucket loads where you want and clean up afterwards. Price is $12.00 per full wheelbarrow bucket. They are available most weekends, and I am sure you could schedule weekday with advance notice.Mulch contacts:Jason Williamson 573.768.4055Carl Leimbach 573.846.6094

- Lawn & Garden Committee Quick Tips -

So get out in the yard because now is a great time to fertilize and apply weed control for weeds that have emerged. Always better to do those applications separate, and I prefer spot treating the weeds with a spray bottle as you get better application and you know where it is going with better control.

Finally, and this is a little messy, most of our neighbors are extremely courteous while walking their beloved canine, picking up the little treasures our best friends leave behind. If you are one that does not subscribe to this common courtesy, please reconsider. Plastic bags are free from your local grocer and we have those beautiful alley dumpsters placed conveniently for your disposal.

- Lawn & Garden Committee Fun Fact -

When the neighborhood was in its final stages of completion, Cyrus Crane Willmore imported rose bushes from Germany for the front lawns of all St. Louis Hills residents, at the time 2,000 in total. I find that pretty cool! I have two, how about you?

SLHNA Membership Committee UpdateHopefully this newsletter finds you and your family well. While I am relatively new to our neighborhood, I am excited to serve as the Chair of the St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association Membership Committee. In the short time that my family has lived here, we have already recognized how special this community is. We have learned that St. Louis Hills is not just a beautiful neighborhood and a safe place to raise our kids, it is a place where neighbors truly care about one another and where each community member plays an active role in shaping the neighborhood’s future. The Neighborhood Association works hard to accomplish its mission of ensuring that this sense of community thrives in St. Louis Hills, but this mission can only be accomplished with a broad-based and active membership. Our neighborhood has approximately 2,300 residences, including 1,852 single family homes, 189 two family buildings and 259 four family buildings, with a total population of over 7,000. Last year, the Neighborhood Association had nearly 700 members. We are looking to significantly increase that number this year to better serve the neighborhood. The financial support from those neighbors who pay their nominal yearly membership dues of $30 allows SLHNA to continue to offer the many FREE sponsored neighborhood events like the Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Tree Lighting, House Tour, SLHNA Annual Scholarships, Lawn & Garden Awards, Christmas Lighting Awards, quarterly Newsletter and SLHNA Holiday Party. To help ensure the future of these fun and memorable neighborhood events, please join or renew your SLHNA membership today by remitting $30 via PayPal athttp://stlhills/com/slhna-membership or mail your payment of cash/check to SLHNA, P.O. Box 190314, St. Louis, MO 63119.

Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in getting involved. You can also follow us on Twitter (@stlhills) and find us on Facebook (St. Louis Hills) to get connected. I look forward to hearing from you, meeting you, and working with you.

St. Louis Hills News and Views / June 2016 9

My parents and grandparents both had homes in St. Louis Hills Estates, until they passed. My Father, Oliver Vordtriede, preceded me on the SLHNA Board back around 1959-1966ish, first in the capacity of Health, Safety, and Welfare (keeping Highway 44 out of St. Louis Hills), then as Secretary of the Board. Among other committees including the SLHNA History Committee and the Friends of Francis Park Board, I am currently serving as your Treasurer on the SLHNA Board. Raised in St. Louis Hills (I won’t give away my age), I have always felt this warm, relaxed, architecturally diverse sense of community. Where else can you walk out your door with the intention of doing yard work and end up talking to your neighbor for hours? And reach Francis and Willmore in moments and back? After attending General Meetings (around 1995), I came to be a volunteer with SLHNA. A couple years later, Wayne Myrick and Bob Klasek pulled me in as Block Captain Co-Chair and Newsletter, which lasted two terms. Since then I have also served on other committees. You find out, when volunteering with SLHNA, you become hooked quickly with the wonderful people and the great committee offerings. My dad and I shared a passion for St. Louis Hills History, both of us collecting historical data. My passion recently has

been reviewing his files. In this and future issues of the SLHNA Newsletter, I will be sharing some of the excerpts I have discovered. Hopefully you enjoy them as I have. SLHNA was originally founded in 1949 as The Greater St. Louis Hills Home Owner’s Association. Below is an excerpt written in 1959 by O.W. Schowalter, President of the Association, which lists the impressive achievements of the Association.

Eagle Bank has been a proud member of the St. Louis Hills community since opening in 2007! Come in and let us amaze you!

St. Louis Hills Neighbors-My name is Don Orf. I have lived in St. Louis Hills and been a member of the neighborhood association for over 20 years. In the last 18 months, I have been involved with the “Complete Streets” effort in our neighborhood, initially as a member of the St. Gabriel School Board. St. Gabriel, like many of us, is interested in increasing the safety for children (and adults) walking to school, church, practice or the playground. We’ve supported the change of Tamm to “one way” from Murdoch to Nottingham; supported the Eichelberger “road diet” from four to two vehicle lanes, with added bike lanes and angled parking; and support the coming changes to two lane traffic on the other three streets surrounding Francis Park (Donovan being the only change under discussion at this point). Coincidentally, at the beginning of this year, I became a Trailnet “Walk Bike Ambassador” volunteer. Trailnet is a 27 year-old organization that started by building trails and is now dedicated to making walking and biking better and safer for everyone in the city and surrounding areas. They do community planning, organized bike rides (22 are scheduled this year), education for all ages, and advocacy. Trailnet’s advocacy was important in getting “Complete Streets” policies passed in the city and county. If you’re interested in Trailnet, you can find a calendar of events and more information at www.trailnet.org. We’re hoping for Trailnet to have a presence at upcoming neighborhood events. If you’d like to get involved with Trailnet, you can go to the website (to volunteer or join) or contact me at [email protected]. Thanks, and see you around the neighborhood!

As many of you already know, Friends of Francis Park is a 501(c)3 charity which was established and is run by neighborhood volunteers to help the city maintain and improve Francis Park. We provide plants and trees for the park, we buy tools and equipment to maintain the gardens, and every summer we hire a maintenance worker to water the plants, trim the bushes and trees and work on other projects to keep the park looking its best. We also fund special projects, such as improvements to the garden along the creek by Tamm Avenue and creation of the butterfly/pollinator garden and gazebo, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation. In recent years we have partnered with Run for the Hills and Grub ‘N Groove to raise funds for the park. For example, all proceeds from the 2015 Grub ‘N Groove event were applied to fund the LED lighting that was installed in the park, with the balance of the cost funded by the city. Our board of directors works closely with Alderwoman Donna Baringer and the St. Louis Hills Neighborhood Association to establish and fund priorities for the park. This year we are working on a few projects. We are working with the city to maintain and paint the handball and racquetball courts. We are planning to build a retaining wall near the handball courts to prevent mud from washing onto the sidewalk. We are also working to raise money to construct a life-sized bronze statue of David Francis, the former Mayor of St. Louis and Governor of Missouri who donated the land for Francis Park 100 years ago. The statue will be constructed by Harry Weber, the famous artist who sculpted the statues of the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. We are also exploring a pilot project to provide some additional security for the park.Friends of Francis Park exists only due to the generosity and commitment to the park of its members. If you are not already a member, I would encourage you to become a member by filling out the form below, or visiting our website at www.friendsoffrancispark.org. With your help, we can maintain and improve our park for our use and the use of future generations.

Farewell to two longtime Francis Park volunteers. Since the inception of our Corner Captain Program and the Francis Park Committee in 1999, Dave and Lisa Anderson have been actively supporting the beautification of Francis Park through these programs. Dave and Lisa are the original corner captains at Tamm and Eichelberger. They have designed, planted and maintained that beautiful shade corner for the past 18 years. During this time, Lisa has been one of our lily pond water gardeners while Dave has helped plant new shrubs and trees in the park each fall. These two generous volunteers are moving to Columbia, Missouri and will be dearly missed in St. Louis Hills. They have been wonderful neighbors and active participants in the betterment of this business and residential community. We thank them for all their help and wish them continued good health and happiness in this new phase of their lives.
