There is no right or wrong - the judge is impartial' a higher power. control my own destiny+ there!ore i! argue per!ectly' can neer lose. ,nderstanding this has empowered me to &eliee in mysel! and to appreciate the intellectual structure o! de&ate. n incoln-%ouglas de&ate' resolutions are real-world issues centered upon important philosophical *uestions and conicts. /ne must argue &oth sides o! a resolution' regardless o! one0s own opinions on the matter. This has !orced me to &ecome adept at loo#ing at issues !rom all angles. %e&ate has changed how see the world. t has taught me that the  justi1cation o! law and policy always lies at the intersection o! moral principles and pragmatic considerations. 2or example' a resolution a&out mandatory accinations comes to mind. deologically' it was a conict &etween indiidual rights and pu&lic wel!are. n a democracy' which should &e gien priority? 3ractically' it was a de&ate a&out the science o! eradicating diseases' the logistics o! accinating eeryone' and the num&er o! people who would receie accinations een i! they weren0t mandatory. 4 winning argument had to &oth address the scienti1c aspects o! accination policy and ma#e a compelling case !or how we should interpret !undamental 4merican alues. Well-prepared de&aters are !amiliar with all the major arguments and eidence at hand. There!ore' #nowledge and intelligence are not always enough to win. Great de&aters win &y catching their opponents o5-guard. uster my opponents &y going out o! my way to include less well-#nown examples o! history' which are harder to re!ute. n my re&uttals' surprise my competition with &old counterarguments they are not prepared to hear. %e&ate has pushed me to thin# outside o! the &ox. t has also !orced me to &e a much more attentie listener.
