Early Detection and Rapid Response
• EDRR • Best management practice
for controlling and/or eradicating new biological invasions (Westbrook 2004)
• Challenges • Detection difficult
• Many groups on landscape • Difficult to synthesize efforts
Great Lakes Early Detection Network • GOALS
• Foster invasive species data sharing • Increase awareness of invasive species • Facilitate rapid response and management
• PROVIDES 1. Framework for data sharing
• Casual observers can enter observations through GLEDN
2. Resources for registered users 1. Distribution maps 2. Weed alert system
Boundaries of GLEDN
Data management systems connected to GLEDN
• 16 systems connected or in the process of being connected* • Connected systems
– GLIFWC – EDDMaps – State agencies (DATCP, WI DNR) – Cheq.-Nicolet Forest
• Systems being connected – MISIN – SWIMS (WI DNR database)

Gaps in reporting
Gaps in reporting individual species Japanese hedge-parsley
Gaps in reporting individual species Japanese hop
Reporting new observations 1. Use a data management system that is linked to
GLEDN • GLIFWC, EDDMaps, NIIS, NIIP,……………..
2. Share information with GLEDN • Point data that requires validation =GLEDN website
• Many points/shape-files taken by professionals = contact GLEDN: Brendon Panke [email protected]
Resources for registered users
• Create distribution maps of specific species
• Obtain email alerts new invasives specific to: 1. Species 2. Area
• 106 registered users as of 10/19/12
Customizable alert system • Signup for alerts based on county and/or species
• currently 43 people signed up
• Will receive an email when a verified report enters GLEDN
Data verification • Data is verified by data provider
• e.g. EDDMaps, GLIFWC all verify data
• GLEDN data verified by experts • Report is sent for approved verifier for region
and species • Approved/Rejected based on image/site visit
• 19 verifiers • WI=9, MN=2 ; IA=1; MI=3*; IN=1*; OH=2; IL=1
If interested please contact [email protected]
Registered Verifiers • Jack Greenlee, Minnesota • George Yatskievych, Missouri • Christopher Evans, Illinois • Carolyn Henne, Michigan • Bob Hartzler, Iowa • Mark Renz, Wisconsin • Shaun Howard, Michigan • Laura Van Riper, Minnesota • Melissa Simpson, Wisconsin • Ted Ritter, Wisconsin
• Quita Sheehan, Wisconsin • Alycia Crall, Wisconsin • Eric Boyda, Ohio • Rod Sharka, Wisconsin • Eric Boyda, Ohio • Katherine Howe, Indiana • Sonya Wardell, Michigan • Erin LaFaive, Wisconsin • Brendon Panke, Wisconsin
Status of alert system/verification • Functional, but had disabled except for
GLEDN Entries to allow for large upload of data from EDDmaps. • Don’t want to send someone 111,606
emails!
• As of 10/26/12 functional for all GLEDN
entries.
What do we do with the data? • Share it with everyone
• Contributing citizens • Other data management systems • Local, state, federal agencies
• My research program create habitat suitability maps • Predict potential spread • Improves survey work • Target species for education /eradication
Future plans for GLEDN
• Increase use of alert system
• Improve and increase data sharing
• Outreach to interested groups outside of WI • North America Invasive Species Information Network
(NAISIN) • Iowa, Missouri, Ohio
• Improve functionality and performance • EDDMaps app
