Frog and Toad Field Trip By Evelyn Huff
Last Friday CHESS took a field trip to see A Year with Frog and Toad at the
Victoria Theatre. A Year with Frog and Toad is all about a frog and a toad that are
the best of friends. In the play, frog and toad take you moment by moment through
their year. The play reminded us that a good friend is there in stormy and sunny
weather.
At the end, everyone cheered as loud as they could. It was such a great play!
If they put it on next year, I hope those who didn’t go this time will go next year! I
know I enjoyed it, and I hope you do too! Hooray for Frog and Toad!!!!!!!

8th grade basketball team. The boys on the
team are Ben Frederick, Micah Crockett,
Matt Binning, Michael Hoover, Tommy
Peebles, AJ Young, and a few boys from
another school. The team is coached by
Mr. Peebles and Caleb Lee. They practice
every Thursday night and have games on

Come to the basketball games to
support the team! They work hard. The
team is learning how to play better. Their
record is 2-3. They are called the CHESS
Royals.
Big Horses of a Big World
By Lexi Vitas
The Quarter Horse is a big breed in the
Western Riding world. Many people say it is the
fastest horse for a quarter mile race. That means if
you line up each breed of horse and race them for a
quarter of a mile, the Quarter Horse would win.
Quarter Horses were used by farmers in the
1700s. The farmers wanted a horse that would work
all day and not tire and then race in the evening
against other farmer’s horses. Then came the
Thoroughbred horse from England. So, a race was
held against a Quarter horse and a Thoroughbred. It
was a mile-long race. The quarter horse led for the
first quarter mile, but then the Thoroughbred took
over and won. When a quarter-mile race was held, the
Quarter horse won. But, when a mile race was held
the Thoroughbred won.
Then a cry from the West came for a sturdy
horse that would quiet when caging cattle, but fast
when on a chase. The Quarter horse was perfect for
the job! Ranch life was now more fun with the
Quarter horse. The Quarter horse is a racer, and the
back bone of Western Life!
I looked and there before me was a white
horse! Its rider held a bow, and he given a crown, and
he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

Elective Highlight
By Bethany Crank
This month's Elective Highlight is
Worship Band which is instructed by Mr.
Peebles. This semester Worship Band
students are traveling around to different
churches to lead worship. The class is really
excited! There are approximately 20
students enrolled in class. The class consists
of singers, drummers, keyboard players, and
guitarists.
If you would be interested in the
CHESS Worship Band visiting your church,
talk with Mr. Peebles first, then your pastor.
Mr. Peebles is only at CHESS on
Wednesday from Chapel to the end of 1st
period. Worship Band is an excellent way to
share your love of God through music. It is
an elective I highly recommend!

Music & Dance
By: Bethany Crank
Hello everyone! This month I
want to showcase the Dayton Ballet's
Daring Duets. This performance will
take place at the Victoria Theatre on
Main Street in downtown Dayton. The
dances are choreographed by Nicole
Haskins, Karen Russo Burke, and
Anthony Tudor. This year the dances
will be performed “pas de deux”
(partner dance).
The performance dates are
February 9th, 10th and 11th. On the
10th, there will be a free pizza prelude!
Last year’s performance was absolutely
amazing. Spend Valentine’s Day with
the ones you love surrounded by the
beauty of the expression of emotion
between two dancers—the pas de
deux—in Daring Duets.

Courage for Sports
By Evelyn Huff
Have you ever played a sport? If
so, you know how wonderful it feels to
play on a team. It also feels great to get
better with practice. I believe that
everyone should try a sport at least
once. Plus, sports are very good
exercise!
First, sports are fun!! When you
play a sport, you are excited to get in
there and play. No matter what sport
you play, you learn new plays, moves
or styles. Furthermore, when you play a
sport you can come to know what
talents God has given you.
Second, sports are a great way
to stay healthy (unless you train for pie-
eating contests!). Normally, when you
play a sport, you are constantly moving.
Therefore, you build up muscles that
make you stronger from all your hard
work.
Most importantly though,
through sports you can make new
friends! I have been in gymnastics for
since I was seven years old. I can
truthfully tell you that through
gymnastics I have made some great
new friends. Also, the longer you play a
sport, the more intimate you can
become with new friends!
This year, attempt to try out one
sport. You may not realize this now, but
in doing so your mind and body will
grow stronger. So just try a sport. I
think you’ll like it!

The Jungle Book: Live Action
Review by Samantha Terry
The Jungle Book movie is about a boy named
Mowgli, who was raised by wolves. Mowgli soon has
to run away from the wolves because a tiger is after
him. Mowgli is saved by a bear called Baloo. Mowgli
helps Baloo. Many new friends are made by Mowgli
and Baloo, and the Jungle becomes safer.
This movie is a bit scary, so I recommend for
5th
grade and up. I rate this movie 3 & 1/2 stars out of
5.
The Secret Life of Pets
Review by Land Newby
Have you ever wondered what your
pets do while you’re away? Well, that’s what
The Secret Life of Pets is all about! The Secret
Life of Pets takes place in New York City. It is
a funny movie about what pets do while their
owners are away. Two dogs named Max and
Duke are on an adventure to find their owner
Katie. They get lost in the city after an
encounter with a bunch of cats and lose their
collars. Through a crazy series of events they
get lost in the sewers and accidentally offend a
group called the Flushed Pets. Max’s friends
try to find him and Duke. Will they be back
with their owner or killed by the Flushed Pets?
Watch the movie and find out! I give this
movie a 5 out of 5-star rating.
Home Alone
Review by Joshua Huff
I think Home Alone is a very funny movie!
What is the movie about? I will tell you. The main
idea of the movie is how a boy, Kevin, gets left behind
on a family vacation. While alone, he stops some bad
guys whose signature name is the Wet Bandits. To
stop them, he makes some funny traps. I give this
movie 5 out of 5 stars!!!!

Who Has Seen the Wind?
Poem by Christina Georgina Rossetti, Illustrated by
Spencer Neal
Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

The Polka-Spotted-Striped-Pus
Story by: Kira Mata
Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Amy. She had a plush platypus. She took him
everywhere she went!
One Tuesday morning, Amy took Platypus on a fishing trip. She gave him a fishing pole and hat.
But when she tried to put bait on his hook…
SPLASH!
The poor platypus was drenched in moss, water, and scum. He had holes all over him. Also, he was losing
stuffing.
Amy packed Platypus into the car and drove to Grandma’s house. Here Grandma sewed patches on him and
cleaned the moss off his back. She handed him to Amy. “He needs a new name!” exclaimed Amy. “He has stripes
and spots where his new patches are. I’ll call him Polka-Spotted-Striped-Pus!”.
THE END!
