THE GREEN & GOLD GAZETTE Principal’s Message March 2018 St. Bonaventure High School 3167 Telegraph Road Ventura, CA 93003 www.saintbonaventure.com Office: 805-648-6836 Fax: 805-648-4903 Office Hours: 7:30 - 4:00 Re-registration time: Counselors will be speaking to the students in grades 9, 10 and 11 about choosing classes for next year. Please contact Mrs. Castro or one of the Counselors for assistance in this process. Registration paperwork will be mailed home in early March which will include the new tuition rates for next year. Please return it completed as soon as possible. If for whatever reason you choose not to return to SBHS next year, please let us know as soon as possible. Winter Sports: Congrats to our Boys soccer team for advancing to the second round of the playoffs. Our Girls basketball team was Tri-Valley League co-champs and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals. Special congratulations to the Boys varsity basketball team for winning the Tri-Valley League championship and has advanced to the CIF Championship game the first week of March. Great job Seraphs! Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conferences are scheduled for March 15 th from 4-6p.m. You are always welcome to contact a teacher or counselor to have a conference when a concern arises. Easter Break: Wednesday, March 28 th is the last day of school before the Easter Break. School will resume on April 9 th (we will be on an Assembly Schedule that day). School Safety: Our prayers go out to the students and families of the Florida school shooting tragedy. Each school tragedy brings with it questions from students and parents about the safety of the children at SBHS. Your child’s safety is extremely important to us. As you remember, in October we had a three and a half hour lockdown which included a call of an “active shooter” on campus (not true). The SWAT Team took over the school and followed their protocols until the campus was “clear”. We reviewed our pro- cedures with Police agencies at that time and made changes to our internal communication policies and procedures which in turn will mean more effective communication to the outside. We also made changes to our student evacuation plans and updated maps for use by Law Enforcement. We are once again reviewing our procedures and working with Law Enforcement in Ventura County to put into place the most effective safety plan as it pertains to our physical location and the recent information learned from the school shooting in Florida. Thank you for your trust in what we do. Gym Floor Update: The new floor should be completed around mid-March. I am thankful for the great “team spirit” of our basketball parents as they transported students all over Ventura/Oxnard for practices in Dec., Jan., and Feb. and played “home” games in many different gyms. Thank you! God Bless, Marc J. Groff Mr. Marc Groff Principal

Message from the Dean of Curriculum

Saint Bonaventure High School will be sending out admissions notifications for the Class of 2022 on Friday,

March 2nd. For any families that are interested in Saint Bonaventure, applications are still being accepted for

the 2018-2019 school year online at www.saintbonaventure.com. Questions regarding freshman admissions

can be directed to Mr. Palomares at [email protected] and admissions to all other grades can

be directed to Mrs. Castro at [email protected].

Important Admissions Dates

March 2, 2018 Admissions Notices mailed for incoming 9th Graders

March 13th: Incoming 9th grade student registration

Our Academic Counselors will be in classrooms the week of March 12th, distributing the 2018/2019 registration packets to returning students. In the packet you will find a new course selection form. This form looks different from last year’s. All 4 years are listed with all course options, so that students wishing to complete a certain course sequence can plan accordingly. Students and parents are encouraged to discuss their 4-year plan with their academic counselor. Special attention should be given to graduation require-ments, college admission requirements and courses that need to be made up. The CSU and UC system will not accepted grades of a D or lower and want courses made up before the end of junior year. Counselors are available to discuss course selection and how to make up deficient classes. Your student’s course selection form needs to be completed and turned in to your student’s counselor by Monday, March 26th. Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on March 15th from 4-6pm. These meetings are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Also that night, we will be hosting an informational meeting for students interested in taking an honors (PreAP) or advanced place-ment (AP) class in the fall. This meeting will be held in room 607. All students interested must attend this meeting; parents are welcome as well. Looking ahead, we will be taking new applications for the Leadership Academy. A description of the Leadership Academy can be found on our school website. Students who are already enrolled in the academy do not need to reapply. Seniors should continue to research scholarship and grant opportunities online. Also check with Mrs. Lajoie in the College and Guidance office for more information. Seniors who have been accepted to specific colleges should also check with that school’s financial aid office for any assistance they may have available in scholarships, grants, work study, etc. Juniors should be preparing and registering for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com and ACT at www.act.org. Having gone over the PSAT test results, your student should have a good assessment of their skills, and should prepare accordingly. AP testing begins in May. Students will be receiving an informational pamphlet regarding test times and cost. AP teachers are pre-paring students for success, and will continue to guide them through the process. We will begin to collect the fees in the month of April. Mrs. Christina Castro Vice Principal, Curriculum
