GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT

NOVEMBER 18, 2018 9:00 A.M. & 10:30 AM SERVICES

We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • For children from 3’s through 7th grade, we have a wonderful Church School program during our 9:00 hour! • And if your kids get squirmy, the Church Parlor is a great place to hang out, and you can

listen to the service over speakers! (through the double doors at front, or go around outside)

Prelude

* Our Thanksgiving Coming Together Prayer, said together:

Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home;

All is safely gathered in,

Ere the winter storms begin;

God our Maker doth provide

For our wants to be supplied;

Come to God’s own temple, come,

Raise the song of harvest home.

Yes, Lord, here we are,

Your thankful people,

hearts filled with gratitude,

joys overflowing,

ready to count our blessings

and name them one by one.

We are NOT oblivious, Lord, to sorrows, losses, and fears.

within our own homes,

within our own nation,

much has been lost.

But still...

we remember all that is good.

* Prayer of Confession, said together:

We are not always grateful, God,

or grateful enough,

or aware enough.

We take too much for granted:

You,

our loved ones,

our freedoms,

our health,

the world around us,

nature,

peace, time.

Holy God,

we will be more mindful,

more grateful,

more thankful.

Amen. (silent prayers of confession)

* Assurance of Forgiveness

* Gloria Patri Hymnal, no. 35 (This hymn, sung every Sunday, expresses our gratitude for forgiveness)

Worship of God through Prayer

Sharing our Joys and Concerns

We welcome your prayer concerns. You may write them into the prayer

request book in the Narthex, or contact the pastors.

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer (using “debts/debtors”) Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be

done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

Worship of God through Giving: (We give in many ways, by various means. Some give quarterly, yearly, by check or card or bank withdrawals. Yet it is still important to “present our offerings” on the altar as part of

genuine worship, our way of giving thanks to God.)

CHURCH NOTES

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! And welcome to Greenfield Hill worship. You are one of the reasons we are grateful. Your presence, your good works, your support, and your

enthusiasm are vital to our church life. Thank you!

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag

home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in

joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

Junior Deacons Witt Badger and Ian Greenwood. At our 10:30 a.m. service,

you have been greeted by Deacon Karin Keith, Junior Deacons Devenny

Widmer and Liam Hawley, and our Junior Greeter Gemma Milano. Junior

Deacons assisting with Church School are Maddy Baker, Reid Brown, Emma

Powell, Elizabeth Cutler, and Garrett Cutler. Assisting in the crib room today

will be Elliot Schunk.

After the 9:00 service, please join the Fellowship Board in the Church House

Memorial Room (across the street) for refreshments and fellowship.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy

worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the

street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child

misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use

of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and

through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to play

with toys and a speaker which carries the service!

The Arrangement in the traditional Banks Bowl on the Communion Table is

given in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Frederic C. Banks and Miss Alva Banks. The Banks Bowl was originally owned by Sherwood Banks who was the

grandfather of Myrial Banks Whetstine, Helen Banks Vogel and Dorothy Banks

Grant, the mother of Thomas Grant. Seventy years ago, Mr. Banks’ daughter,

Alva, started the tradition of having the bowl filled with local fruits and

vegetables and place on the communion table the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

This year’s arrangement has been done by Lynn Davies.

The flowers on the Communion Table today are given by Judy and Alan

Goldbecker in memory of loves ones.

FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH:

THE CAMPAIGN FOR 2019

The pledge drive to support our 2019 budget is well underway! As you

know, we depend almost entirely on gifts from our church family to

support the programs and outreach of our church. Our annual budget is

raised each year from members and friends who pledge their

contributions; for 2019, our pledge target is just over $1 million.

Our campaign goal for 2019 is to increase the number of families

pledging at the level of $100/week or more -- and to raise our overall

participation rate (we’re aiming for 100%!). We assure you that

whatever you can pledge will be thankfully received.

Already dozens of church families have submitted their pledges -- thank

you! But there are still many families not yet heard from. You can fill

out a pledge card in your pew today -- or go to the ‘Giving’ page of our

church website to complete a simple online form.

MANY THANKS FROM YOUR DEVELOPMENT BOARD

AND YOUR CHURCH STAFF!

Get your Hallelujah on! Handel's Messiah is one of the most famous pieces of music ever written and is widely

performed at Christmas and Easter because it inspires us

with the emotional impact of Christ's birth, death and

resurrection. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra's

production of this classic will be in Fairfield on Fri. Dec 14, 7:30pm at Sacred

Heart University, Chapel of the Holy Spring. Let the Adult Educ. Board know if

you are interested in going and would like to sit with others, or would like a
