Weeks of unremittingly terrible weather in what is
supposed to be summer has made it hard to feel very
positive, but luckily we have some good news stories
this month. Firstly, congratulations go to Madeleine
Odell, former Mayor of Haslemere who has been
awarded an MBE for services to the Community of
Haslemere in the 2012 Birthday Honours List.
The Haslemere Museum has recently won the Museum
Heritage Readers Award for the Nation’s Favourite
Museum. This is hot on the heels of another award
presented to the museum, that of the 2012 Telegraph
Family Friendly Museum, so our congratulations also go
to all the hardworking staff and volunteers.
You could be lucky enough to win one of the many
prizes on offer in participating shops in Haslemere with
the Spend and Win scheme during the last weeks of the
roadworks, due to be completed at the end of August.
See page 8 for more information. I’m sure that we all
look forward to the end of disruption and the
resumption of normality in the town.
Haslemere food festival takes place from 1st to 16th of
September throughout the town. This will feature, for
the first time the Wine Fest, a gathering of the region’s
best wine producers on 15th September. See p.24 for
more information.
In the meantime, here’s hoping for some sunshine...

Road Safety Tips for Relationships
STOP LOOK LISTEN became part of a road safety campaign in the 70s. These three words are still great instruction for crossing the road safely and also make effective guide-lines for navigating a relationship.
STOP: Stress situations can be
diffused and wonderful moments
can be cherished by learning to stop
and name the experience you are
having. Identifying whether you are
having a ‘pleasant’ or ‘unpleasant’
experience—rather than categorizing
it as good or bad—is like pressing a
pause button; it gives you a moment
to gather your thoughts, to reflect
and choose how you want to
respond to an event.
LOOK: The spoken word makes up
just 7% of our communication; we
say a great deal more through our
tone, our body language and our
behaviour. Learning to be observant
of both your outer and inner world,
as well as becoming more aware of
those around you, will increase your
ability to make wise and informed
choices about what to do and say.
LISTEN: Effective listening is a
powerful skill in relationships.
Listening within to the voice of
intuition as well as the voice of fear,
and also learning to listen deeply to
those around you, allows you to
resolve conflicts and heal misunder-
standings more easily and to move
into a deeper level of relationship
and connection.
Don’t stumble blindly through your
relationships. Using these simple
tools can stop a misunderstanding
developing into an argument, help
diffuse a tense situation and create
opportunities to increase love and
connection. Developing simple
awareness skills can reap amazing
benefits both to you and those you
love. For further information or a chat about this or any other matter, contact Kim Millar on 07789 408378 or email [email protected].

Swedish born Linda Swarbrick’s dream of
running her own shop has finally been
realised this month with the opening of
Scandi Living in Hindhead. For Linda, who’s
w e l l - e s t a b l i s h e d
onl ine bus iness
www.scandiliving.com
already generates a
lot of local interest,
this is an exciting new
development. Having
at long last found the
right premises, she
says, it felt like the
right time to launch
this new project.
The interior of the shop
reflects the clean and
elegant principles of
Scandinavian living by being
beautifully light and airy - but
keeping the original character
features such as the fireplaces,
large bay windows and
parquet floors throughout.
In conjunction with the web-
site Scandi Living sells high
quality Scandinavian interior
design items including an
extensive range of Linum soft
furnishings - Sweden’s most
popular brand - cushions,
bedding and fabric sold
by the metre are on
display in the shop.
Modern home and
kitchen accessories by
n o t a b l e d e s i g n
companies such as
Danish MENU, Normann
Copenhagen and Stelton
will tempt devotees of
Scandinavian style as
will the dinnerware by Mateus and Hoganas and
glassware by Orrefors and Kosta Boda.
On display in the new shop are the very popular
and functional rugs by
Pappelina, as well as
ranges of wallpaper by
Ferm Living, Eco and
Borastapeter.
Children’s rooms are
catered for with accesso-
ries by Ferm Living, Mairo
and LEKA.
Contemporary designs of
kitchen accessories,
fragranced candles or beautiful
scarves make perfect gifts too.
“With the opening of our shop
we will be bringing something
new and exciting to Scandi
Living. We offer an interior
design service for anything from
curtains and blinds to full room
solutions. ” says Linda.
Becky Cooper (also a Hindhead
local resident) of Dalahome will
be selling her beautifully
painted Scandinavian inspired
furniture within the shop.
To entice you into the
shop is a café corner,
where you can enjoy
“Teapig” tea, “Illy” coffee
and of course homemade
delicious Scandinavian
cakes, the perfect
solution after a walk on
the Devil’s Punchbowl
and nearby village parking
is easy on the new road
leading up to the
common.

Well, by the time this comes out, we should
be in the midst of the London 2012 Olympics.
We may even have a summer but that’s less
certain!
What a fantastic time to watch and support
our Olympic heroes and even consider
whether we too could be or even, could have
achieved, such dizzy sporting heights. Having
worked with some future Olympians the one
thing that all have in common is a total self
belief that they are the best and a total
dedication to achieving their goal. However,
like the rest of us mere mortals, they too need
to make sure that they are well prepared for
their event. They will have a four year plan to
build up to the Olympics where they will train,
strengthen, compete and reach pre-set
targets in order to achieve their ultimate goal.
We also should look to set targets in our
sporting lives and have a plan of action in
order to achieve them. It may be to loose
some weight or to play a new sport or even to
improve a sport that we already participate in.
Careful planning and preparation will not only
allow you to achieve the optimum
performance and reach your goal but also
reduce the chances of getting injured.

Keep Your Focus
This isn’t about obsessing about why you
haven’t lost weight, or telling yourself you
need to work harder or more frequently;
rather it’s about keeping your focus on what
you want to achieve so you don’t slip up.
If you make an effort to remember what
you’re working towards (write your goals
down and keep them in your handbag, on
the fridge, or wherever else you look
regularly), you’ll be more likely to make a
plan for times when you’re likely to cheat.
For example, meeting a friend for a coffee is
a great way to accidently eat a cupcake; if
you plan to make sure you’re full before you
go out, or you arrange to meet for a walk in
the sunshine, you’ve done what you wanted
to do (met up with your friend), kept your
focus on your goal and averted a slip up.

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
As more and more is understood about
the brain, it is clear that logic and emotion
are stored in very different ways and the
brain has different structures to deal with
each.
This means that sometimes we can think
we have dealt with a situation logically,
yet still experience the effects
emotionally.
Richard Morley is a locally based clinical
hypnotherapist. He is a tutor at the Lon-
don College of Clinical Hypnosis and a full
member of the British Society of Clinical
Hypnosis. He is one of only a few
Certificated NLP and health practitioners
in the UK and a Master Practitioner and
Trainer of NLP. He has helped hundreds of
people from all walks of life become
happier, healthier and more productive.
Gillian, in her late forties, is a happily
married mother who has increasingly been
beset by migraines and has been waking
up in the mornings with a sore jaw
through having clenched her teeth at
night. She has been taking medication to
help her sleep.
Gillian had what in most people’s terms
would have been a difficult childhood.
Her mother left home when she was 11
and her father died in unpleasant
circumstances when she was 13.
At the time Gillian just got on with life and
dealt with these issues calmly and
competently.
In her late thirties, she had counselling to
help get these early events into
perspective. It helped a lot. But recently
these migraines and clenching had been
getting worse.
Richard had three sessions with her using
a combination of hypnotherapy, EMDR (a
trauma therapy) and Alpha-Stim therapy
(highly effective for depression, anxiety,
stress and insomnia). Very quickly, Gillian
found that she was sleeping better and
that the jaw clenching and migraines were
reducing. It is one of the characteristics of
hypnosis that one can access the emo-
tional parts of the brain more readily than
when in the normal waking state. And in
hypnosis Gillian has been able to get an
emotional awareness and release that has
allowed her to peacefully sleep in a way
that she hasn’t been able to do before,
without medication. In her own words “ I
feel that I’ve made more steps towards
putting the past behind me and feel that
I’m in control of my migraines without the
side effects of medication. I’ve
recommended hypnotherapy to my
friends and believe that we should all be
looking to complimentary therapies
before “popping pills”.
Richard hold clinics at Stricklands Dental
Fitness Centre, 200 metres from Haslemere
station. Appointments there can be
booked on 01428 654923. He can be con-
tacted direct on 0845 6066089 or via his
website www.hypnonlp.co.uk.

Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of Wills and Lasting Powers of
Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)Attorney (LPAs)
LPAs are documents which can be used to
assist a person of any age who may be
incapacitated owing to illness or an
accident. We all risk accidents and anyone
can be ill. We may have a business to run,
bills to pay, sales contracts to conclude.
The Elderly may retain their competence
but not their energy and therefore wish to
hand day to day chores to a member of the
next generation.
An LPA can only be signed by a person who
has full understanding and who is not
being pressurised to do so. It cannot be
used until it has been registered by the
Office of the Public Guardian. This process
takes around three months. It is therefore
not practical to wait until the need is dire.
Accident and illness are not foreseeable.
Consequently, having insurance and the
right documentation such as LPAs is wise.
Old age is foreseeable but it is difficult for
the younger generation to broach this
subject with their parents. It is far better if
anyone over the age of 60 is able to take
the initiative and get the right
documents prepared.
Wills
Writing a Will enables you to control the
destination of your money and assets after
your death. It is possible to ensure that
your loved ones are protected and money
and assets do not inadvertently leave the
family. Parents should always nominate
guardians for minor children.
It is possible to ensure that your chosen
heirs inherit and tax is minimised or, in
many cases, avoided altogether.
Getting these documents right now, well
in advance, can save your family a great
deal of stress and expense.
If your Will predates the change in the
law in 2007 it may be better to rewrite it.
“The Opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference.”
Oscar Wilde.

Our local wine producers have hit the
jackpot. Think of the spinning reels on a fruit
machine. If they all line up you get a payout. If
one’s out of place you get less, if more than one is
out you get nothing. It’s been that way for English
wine producers ever since the Romans first tried
and failed to make wine in our marginal climate.
The first reel is climate and most of ours is too cold
to properly ripen grapes; the reason why until
recently the tiny industry has concentrated on
hardy, but often unexciting, grape varieties.
Growers are now seeking prized south facing slopes
that ripen grapes in a similar way to the slopes of
Champagne.
The next reel is soil. Vines hate having their feet in
water and prefer warm, dry soils. Unfortunately, in
the south there’s a lot of unsuitable soil that has led
to mediocre wine. There’s much talk about the
chalk of the Downs being of the same strata as that
found in Champagne and this why we’re making
good wine. It is and some of it does, but many of
the best are on greensand outcrops, which is a
warmer soil than chalk.
The next reel is the grape. It was commonly
thought that we couldn’t ripen the good ones (for
the reasons above), but on the right sites and soils
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (the
constituent grapes of Champagne) ripen to give
wines every bit as good as Champagne.
The final reel is production, the way the vine is
grown and the wine is made. Farsighted producers
now have the confidence and budgets to be
investing in the best technology at the same levels
as Champagne producers.
In the last fifteen years these reels have lined up
and our local producers have begun winning many
prestigious international competitions with
sparkling wines. In England we currently buy over
35 million bottles of Champagne a year. We
currently produce less wine than a tenth of that
(including still wine), but vine plantings for sparkling
wine are on the increase here at an accelerating
pace that suggests more and more producers are all
too aware of the jackpot up for grabs.
The Haslemere WineFest will showcase the best of
these producers, so come along and meet them in
person before they’ve built their grand Châteaux on
the South Downs and are too rich and busy to come
to us at all.
Part of the Haslemere Food Festival, Haslemere
WineFest has been organised by Francis Gimblett,
Haslemere based wine presenter and author. ‘I
wanted to show locals the wine trade’s best kept
secret ─ that these wines are now world beaters.’
Tickets are £10 and will be available from
www.wine-navigator.com and via The Haslemere
Cellar. Please see the website to pre-register. All
proceeds go to local charities.
Wineries appearing include: Bluebell Vineyard,
Breaky Bottom, Bolney Wine Estate, Danebury
Vineyard, Davenport Vineyard, Fernhurst Estate,
Henners, Jenkyn Place, Nutbourne Vineyards, Nye-
timber, Plumpton College, Ridgeview, Stopham

“It gives us so much pleasure to showcase our
current range at an event celebrating all things
English. We are very much looking forward to meet-
ing and greeting the local community and hearing
first hand their thoughts on the top quality wine
English soils are capable of producing!” Nyetimber

Transform Landscapes 01428 652222 www.transformlandscapes.co.uk
Around this time last year, I wrote a piece on Horse
Chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameraria ohridella) and how
it had come to the UK and was spreading across the
country. From the spread of this, and Dutch Elm
Disease in the 70’s, you would have hoped we had
learnt that the Channel will not protect our trees
forever. However, this is not the case with more
tree pests and diseases being introduced.
These recent tree pests could be hugely significant
on the trees that make up the English countryside
over the next 10-20years.
Oak Processionary Moth (Thaumetopoea
processionea)
In 2006 Oak Proces-
sionary Moth was first
found on a couple of
sites in West London.
These caterpillars
group together in num-
bers so large that they
can completely de-
foliate trees in a single
season, at which point
they process to the
next Oak tree. They are
covered in irritating
hairs that contain a toxin which, on contact with
skin or when inhaled, can result in skin irritation
and allergic reactions. Since 2006, the outbreak
area has grown with outbreaks now moving into
East Surrey
Massaria disease (Splanchnonema platani)
Since 2009, there has been confirmation of
Massaria disease on Plane trees in London.
Although individual cases had been reported
previously, the frequency of occurrences in 2009
raised alarm. The disease is specific to Plane trees
and will often lead to branch die-back and failure if
adequate pruning work is not completed.
Asian Longhorned Beetle (Anoplophora glabripen-
nis)
Early this year Asian Longhorned beetle, a native of
China, was found in Kent and poses a serious threat
to a wide range of broadleaved native trees. The
larvae of the beetle live and feed in the tree, killing
areas of the
funct ioning
timber and
p o s s i b l y
leading to
tree death or

infection.
Phytophthora ramorum
A fungus like pathogen was found a few years ago
in the USA and at that time few trees were affected
in the UK. However, in 2009 it made headlines in
the UK when it was found to have
affected many plants and shrubs
but particularly rhododendron,
viburnum and camellia. The patho-
gen’s behaviour changed resulting
in it rapidly reproducing and
infecting commercially important
conifer tree species. It has now
spread to many parts of the
country from the South West to
the North. Whilst all of this may
sound rather negative, the
Forestry Commission are working
towards a more strategic
approach to forest and tree health, and we can all
do our bit to help prevent the spread of pests and
diseases from site to site.

The forestry commission have offered the following
advice to the public when enjoying the great out-
doors:
• Mud can carry pests and diseases, so always
clean your boots and shoes and wash down the
tyres of bikes and behicles after off-roading.
Keep to obvious paths when walking in the
countryside and keep an eye out for any infor-
mation on noticeboards.
• Plants and leaves may already be home to
pests and diseases and therefore avoid taking
plants or cuttings home from forests. By the
same token resist planting out your garden
plants or, especially important, never dump
garden waste in the countryside.

Heritage Open Days which runs from Thursday
6th to Sunday 12th September 2012. This is a
unique opportunity to visit some of Haslemere’s
most interesting and unusual historic sites and
buildings. If you have always wanted to take a
peek inside some of Haslemere’s marvellous
buildings and learn more, now is your chance as
part of Heritage Open Days 2012!
Heritage Open Days celebrates architecture,
culture and heritage across England, when
buildings of every age, style and function open
their doors to a series of events, tours and
activities allowing visitors access to interesting
and fascinating properties.
The organisers, The Haslemere Society
supported by Haslemere Visitor & Local
Information Centre and the Town Council, have
arranged for numerous buildings to be opened
in locations. These include the High Street,
Petworth Road, Holdfast Lane, Derby Road,
St Christopher’s Green, Grayswood and
Hindhead.
Ceri-Jane O’Hara of the Haslemere Society and
Visitor Information Centre says “Our local
buildings are there to be enjoyed so please do
take a look around and visit at least some of the
wealth of buildings that are open to view. It's a
fantastic event and a great way for people who
care about their local area to learn something
new about their heritage and culture and I am
delighted that Heritage Open Days will reveal
what lies behind even more of the town’s
historic doors."

2012 private medical insurance – discounted premiums for
the self-employed and your family members The UK economy relies on the self-employed. The
entrepreneurial spirit of the close to four million
Britons who work for themselves is what's made us
one of the most successful economies in the world.
While there are obvious advantages to being
self-employed, such self-reliance comes at a cost -
if you don't work, you don't earn.
There will be no employer paying you when you
take 'duvet days' or more seriously when you are
off work for a long time due to illness. And, apart
from that, who is going to mind the shop when you
are off? If you can't mind your business because
you are too ill to work, your customers are going to
go elsewhere.
So it's easy to conclude that you work for yourself
and you can't afford to be sick. Yet it's going to
happen to you at some point. Most of us will at
some time suffer a condition debilitating enough to
demand we stay off work. And while the National
Health Service does the best it can with limited
resources, it's not geared up to the needs of the
self-employed – picking and choosing your appoint-
ment times or where you go for treatment. If you're
responsible for your income, it's a challenge to
make your work fit around hospital treatment - yet
that's what you'll have to do if the NHS is your only
source of healthcare. That's why private health
cover is often seen as a necessity for the self-
employed. It gives you control of your recovery
while helping you juggle the needs of your
business, your family and most importantly, you.
One health insurer, WPA recognises the needs of
the self-employed and offers a 20% discountsee notes
which reflects the lower claims made. If you are
self-employed or a member of the professions -
now is a good time to purchase a Flexible Health
plan from WPA because, being 2012 for a limited
time they are offering a further 20% introductory
discount in 2012, and a 12% discount in 2013.
Tina Kemp, WPA’s Hampshire/Surrey based
Franchisee observes that ‘You may already have life
insurance and, possibly, critical illness insurance.
Both are good ideas if you're self-employed -
because they offer you the kind of benefit that
employees often get through their companies.
Arguably they are not as vital as private health
insurance. If you are ill, then you want to be seen
quickly, at a hospital of your choice with a
consultant you feel happy and confident with’.
‘The self-employed tend to see their health plan as
a back-up for when things go wrong. You want
things sorted quickly and you want things done the
way you want - with health insurance you regain
the upper hand and it helps you take control of
your recovery and keep control of your business.’
Notes: A 20% self-employed discount is available up to the age of 55, which then diminishes by 2% every year until the age of 65. i.e. no discount after the age of 65. This discount applies to policyholders AND any family members on your policy.
Discounts are available if you are:
• Currently actively self-employed - as recognised by the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC);
• A holder of a recognised franchise agreement;
• A director of a private limited company which employs no more than 5 other salaried members of staff or
• a practising member of a WPA recognised professional body (see wpa.org.uk/qualify
• A partner within a partnership that employs no more than 5 salaried staff.
Premiums can be further reduced with Shared Responsibility and High Excesses allowing customers to further tailor their premiums to a level to suit them.
Please note that terms and conditions apply and new customers are subject to WPA’s normal joining criteria. Pre-existing conditions are unlikely to be covered - unless agreed in advance by WPA.
WPA is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services
Authority (Ref:202608).
