At Harbor, we are in the business of creating exceptional retail experiences. It starts with consumer insights, understanding the human emotion behind each consumer interaction. Headquartered in Grand Haven, Michigan, with a state-of-the-art 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Charlevoix, we’re in tune with what makes shoppers tick… and we know that by designing and creating retail displays, fixtures and environments that give them more of what they want, we can make life better for them—and for you.

ince gaining respite popularity in the 1800s, the stream of visitors to the Petoskey

hasn’t slowed.And residents understand why.

It’s the bright blue water, small town feel and ample shopping, dining and culture opportunities.

It also comes from the surrounding area. Bay View, to the north of downtown, offers a glimpse at Victorian and Queen Anne architecture and a long-standing music festival open to the public. And Bay Harbor, to the south, offers spectacular water views and shopping.

FARMERS MARKETThe farmers market in

Petoskey runs 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Fridays, June 22-Sept. 28. Set up on the block of Howard Street between Mitchell and Michigan streets, the market offers local fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheeses, bread and meats and fish.

Bay Harbor is host to an open air market 2-6 p.m. Fridays, starting May 25 and wrapping up Sept. 7. The event will bring together organic farmers and artisans, and offer music, gourmet food samplings and fresh produce and organic meats.

BEACHESIn Petoskey’s Bayfront Park is

a small city beach within walking distance from downtown. Adjacent is Festival Place, a large swath of grass perfect for a picnic or kite flying.

A top beach spot in the region is Petoskey State Park on M-119. Its more than a mile of beachshore on Little Traverse Bay is accessible not only by vehicle, but also via bike from the Little Traverse Wheelway. This year, the beach concession will be open with bike and kayak rentals.

TRAILSA short stop off the Little

Traverse Wheelway near Petoskey State Park is the 58-acre Round Lake Preserve, with 1.5 miles of trail with frontage on Round Lake.

Little Traverse Conservancy assisted the city of Petoskey with acquiring the Skyline Trail parcel and constructing an overlook platforms that offers views of the Petoskey region. It is now part of the North Country Trail system southeast of town, off Krause Road.

The Allan and Virginia McCune Preserve lies seven miles east of Petoskey. It features three miles

of trail and frontage on Minnehaha Creek. Biking is allowed.

Preserve maps for the above are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting www.landtrust.org.

Stretching approximately 26 miles from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix, the Little Traverse Wheelway is a favored destination for non-motorized activities. Its paved surface varies from 6 to 10 feet wide, with local routes connecting to the end towns. The trail is ideal for biking, along with walking, running and inline skating, and favorite vistas including the bluffs between Petoskey and Bay Harbor, and along Bayfront Park in Petoskey.

The Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail is an unimproved trail that runs 35 miles between the two cities. Set on a former railroad bed, it starts at Spring Lake Park along M-119, then cuts through Conway, Oden, Alanson, Pellston, Levering

and Carp Lake before ending at the trailhead off Shepler Drive in Mackinaw. The section of the trail from Spring Lake Park to Alanson is scheduled to be paved in the fall of 2012. Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail provides easy access to the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake, among other attractions.

Trail maps for the above are available by calling Top of Michigan Trails Council, (231) 348-8280.

Near downtown Petoskey is the Bear River Valley Recreation Area, which includes the Bear River nonmotorized and nature trails. The nonmotorized trail is about 1.1 paved, ADA-accessible miles between Lake and Sheridan streets, ideal for biking. Bordering both sides of the river are about 1.5 miles of gravel and boardwalk trails. The North Country Trail routes through the valley, continuing to Bayfront Park. n

BEACHESZorn Park in Harbor Springs

hosts Harbor’s city beach. The marked swimming area includes a raft to swim out to. Lifeguards are on duty there 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily during the open season of mid-June through Labor Day. Other amenities include restrooms, picnic tables and changing rooms, and nearby concessions.

Humans and their four-legged dog friends alike are welcome at Zoll Street Beach in Harbor Springs.

Near Good Hart are the secluded Church Beach and Readmond Township Beach, both accessible via Lambkin Road. Church Beach gets its name because of its proximity to St. Ignatius Church.

ADVENTUREExperience Harbor Springs from

a whole different vantage point with Skydive Harbor Springs.

Based at the Harbor Springs airport, the skydiving company’s drop zone is over 2426 Quick Road in Harbor. The company offers

jumps either from 8,000 or 12,000 in the air, as well as jumps over Traverse City during the Traverse City National Cherry Festival.

Those 18 and older can sign up for the thrill of riding tandem, and solo training is also available.

For more information, call (231) 242-8822 or visit www.skydiveharborsprings.com.

Zip through a canopy of green and soar through open valleys at Boyne Highland’s Zipline Adventure at the Harbor Springs resort.

The zipline, in its third year of operation, offers seven individual lines, with the highest at 55 feet and the longest at more than 1,300 feet long.

Call (231) 526-3835 for days, times and reservations.

FAMILY FUNFor rainy summer days,

Northern Lights Recreation on M-119 in Harbor Springs offers 16 lanes of bowling, 18 holes of mini golf, billiards and an arcade. If hunger strikes, pop over to the full-

service restaurant. Call (231) 347-3100 for more information.

Horseback trail rides are offered at Boyne Highlands resort in Harbor Springs, leaving from the equestrian facilities and traveling for one hour on trails accessible only by horseback. For rates, days, times and reservations, call (231) 526-3000.

OTHER FAMILY FUN SPOTS:Harbor Springs Community Pool Harbor Springs, (231) 526-4824

Pond Hill Farm, 5 miles north of Harbor Springs, (231) 526-3276

TRAILSLocated between Harbor Springs

and nearby ski resorts is the Offield Family Preserve, donated to the Little Traverse Conservancy in 2009. It offers several miles of trails on its 390 acres.

Goodhart Farms Preserve features 7.5 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The entire area is 665 acres.

Just north of Harbor Springs is the Stutsmanville Bog. The bog, likely formed by a glacial feature called an “ice block depression,” features fern-lined short trail. Sit at the bench overlooking the bog and learn about its ecology through interpretive signs. Park on the east side of State Road just before Stutsmanville Road.

Preserve maps for the above are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting www.landtrust.org.

Boyne Highlands offers 24 miles of wide and wooded trails for easy bicycling as well as more challenging rides from the top of the hills and Boyne Highlands Bike Park. The park features banked turns, jumps and narrow passages. n

FARMERS MARKETCharlevoix’s farmers market extends its farm-fresh

offerings 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Thursday starting June 7. It takes place outdoors through October on Bridge Street alongside East Park.

BEACHESFisherman’s Island State Park offers five miles

of shoreline just south of Charlevoix, along with 2,678 acres to explore.

To the north of Charlevoix is Mount McSauba. It offers a rustic beach experience; a small parking lot is located off a pass to the dunes, and there are no bathroom facilities.

Three beaches reside within Charlevoix city limits — Michigan, Ferry and Depot. Michigan Beach is located on Lake Michigan, with sandy beaches near the Pine River Channel. Ferry and Depot beaches are on Lake Charlevoix, with expanses of sand.

All these Charlevoix beaches offer restroom facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds and lifeguards, with concession stands at Ferry and Michigan. Depot and Michigan have one pavilion each, and Ferry has three, which are available to rent; (231) 547-3253 or www.cityofcharlevoix.org.

TRAILSThe Fisherman’s Island Foot Trail travels three

miles through Fisherman’s Island State Park. The trail offers mostly flat terrain with some hills.

Susan Creek Preserve is east of Charlevoix. Situated along U.S. 31, it offers 1.4 miles of trails on its 223 acres, with more trail opportunities at the adjacent Taimi Hoag Preserve.

The 26-mile Little Traverse Wheelway ends its path from Harbor Springs via the Charlevoix Township bike path, leading right into downtown Charlevoix.

ISLAND HOPPINGMichigan’s Emerald Isle — Beaver Island — is a

mere 30 miles from downtown Charlevoix. The natural, lush setting isn’t the only reason the

island earned this name. It’s also the Irish heritage that is threaded throughout its history and the histories of the people who live there.

Two beacons mark the island — Beaver Head Lighthouse, to the south, and St. James Lighthouse. The latter is at the north end of the island, marking the entrance to St. James Harbor.

There are two transport options for accessing Beaver Island — by air or by sea.

The Inland Waterway winds nearly 40 miles across the Northern

Michigan landscape. The series of rivers and lakes is

a top destination for boaters who are looking to spend a leisurely day putting through towns or who want to open it up on some of the larger lakes.

The waterway begins with Crooked and Pickerel lakes near Petoskey, winding north to its endpoint of Lake Huron at Cheboygan. Points of interest along the way are Burt Lake, Mullett Lake and the Indian River.

There are locks on the Crooked River at Alanson and on the Cheboygan River, just before the downtown.

raft or tube. Big Bear’s rafts have a zero percent tipping rate, and both tubes and rafts are open to people of all ages and experience levels. Raft and tube trips range from 1 to 3.5 hours.

River trips end at Burt Lake State Park. State park passes for those who would like to stay and play a little bit longer in the park are available via the Recreational Passport, a sticker available when drivers renew their license plates. Passes are available for those from out of state at state park offices.

Big Bear also offers an 18-hole adventure miniature golf course with waterfalls, hills and trees, as well as electric bumper boats with a squirt gun attached to each boat.

Slated for a Memorial Day weekend opening is a new ropes challenge course put in by Big Bear. Participants will run the course on the second story, with their feet always at least 12 feet off the ground. But parents don’t need to worry: participants will be outfitted with a full body harness and safety lanyard, which is always hooked into the overhead safety system.

For rates and more information, call (231) 238-8181 or visit www.bigbearadventures.com.

Thunder Falls Family Water Park of Mackinaw City, the only outdoor water park in the area, offers 12 slides and a wave pool, among other attractions. Ride the heated water down two speed slides — each more than six stories tall — and climb a four-story climbing wall. For a more relaxing experience, visit the kids swim area and the lazy river.

Thunder Falls opens Saturday, June 16, and closes Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. Its regular season hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. For rates and information, call (231) 436-6000 or visit www.thunderfallswaterpark.

com.Take in a different type of show at

the Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows in Mackinaw City. The shows aim to educate audiences in the history of Michigan’s logging past. Events include competitions such as pole climbing, ax throwing, logrolling and cross cut sawing.

The shows, which begin Memorial Day weekend and run through Labor Day, occur daily at 7:30 p.m. beginning Friday, June 15. Other specially-scheduled shows are listed at the organization’s website.

For rates and more information, call (231) 436-5225 or visit www.jackpinelumberjackshows.com.

Learn the history of the introduction of trout in Michigan at the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden.

On the grounds of the visitor center is a refurbished train car, in which employees of the Michigan Department of Conservation would live while stocking fish around the state.

Walk the nature trail and learn about native plants while trying to see fish in the creek that runs through the property. A highlight of the center is a viewing area built into the side of a hill that allows a cross-section view of the stream and its inhabitants. The Oden State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center is located at 3377 U.S. 31, Oden. Call (231) 348-0998.

TRAILSThe Little Traverse Conservancy

offers plenty of hiking and biking trails throughout its preserves in Emmet County.

Hike and bike through the combined 482 acres of the Colonial Point/Chaboiganing preserves. Easy trails totaling 2.5 miles are located near Burt Lake, east of Brutus.

Together, the Andreae and Banwell Family preserves cover 539 acres, with more than four miles of frontage on Pigeon River and 5.2 miles of trails. The Andreae features a cabin for community group use.

Preserve maps for the above are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting www.landtrust.org.

The Wildwood Hills Pathway is located between Petoskey and Indian River, and its access point offers parking off Wildwood Road. A favorite of mountain bikers, the area has multiple loops totaling 9.3 miles.

Approximately 20 miles of trails open to hiking wind through Wilderness State Park in northern Emmet County. Portions of the trails are open to biking, and the North Country Trail overlaps seven miles of the trails.

Spanning the almost 62 miles between Gaylord and Mackinaw City is the North Central State Trail. The 10-foot-wide packed, crushed limestone surface trail offers varied terrain and easy access to Gaylord, Vanderbilt, Wolverine, Indian River, Topinabee, Cheboygan and Mackinaw City.

A product of the Rails-to-Trails program, the Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail is an unimproved trail that runs the 35 miles between the two cities. The trail begins at Spring Lake Park along M-119 and jogs through Conway, Oden, Alanson, Pellston, Levering and Carp Lake before ending at the trailhead off Shepler Drive in Mackinaw. Take a break along the trail for easy visits to the Michigan Fisheries Visitors center in Oden and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake. The section of the trail from Spring Lake Park to Alanson is scheduled to be paved in the fall of 2012.

Trail maps for the two above are available by calling Top of Michigan Trails Council, (231) 348-8280.

ISLAND HOPPINGThe only motors to come

near Mackinac Island are the ferries that bring people to the island. Otherwise, a visit to the island is a step back in time.

Horses and bicycles fill in as the preferred mode of transportation, and it’s not uncommon to see people in period dress, such as women in 18th century clothing as well as soldiers from the same period standing guard at Fort Mackinac.

o matter how many times you’ve visited, it seems the Boyne City and East Jordan areas always have

something new to offer.New businesses join seasoned

favorites, and no outdoor adventure opportunity is ever the same, even if the location is.

It’s this variety — and quick access to Lake Charlevoix’s pristine waters — that call up new and returning visitors to explore the region.

FARMERS MARKETBoyne City’s farmers market is

outdoors 8 a.m.-noon every Wednesday and Saturday, May through October, in Veterans Park. It is a favorite location for shoppers seeking fresh produce, flowers, handmade goods and baked goods for breakfast and dessert.

Local is the focus at East Jordan’s farmers market, be it in the produce or wares offered. The market runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursdays, May 10 through October, in Sportsman Park on M-32/Bridge Street.

Ellsworth’s farmers market is expanding this year with more area vendors offering fresh produce and baked goods. This event runs 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays, June through September, across from the high school at the ball diamond, where C-48 and C-65 meet.

BEACHESThere are two halves to Melrose

Township Park in Walloon Lake, separated by M-75. The beach half rests on Walloon Lake, with a buoyed swim area and gradual, sandy slope. The other half offers a park with a play area, bathroom facilities and pavilion for rent. There is also access to the Bear River, ideal for launching kayaks and canoes when the water is right, and

a couple-mile riverwalk trail leaves from the park and parallels the river.

Young State Park features a mile and a half frontage on Lake Charlevoix, and is one of the top-rated beaches in Northwest Michigan. The sandy stretch is a favorite for offshore mooring too, by campers or day users spending a day on the water.

Boyne City offers Peninsula Beach about a half-mile south of downtown proper. It has a marked swimming area, sand volleyball court, restrooms, picnic tables and a play area.

Charlevoix County’s Whiting Park is also on Lake Charlevoix. It includes a half-mile of beach, hiking trails, beach volleyball, a play area, camping, and pavilion and building rentals.

East Jordan has two beaches in the area — Tourist Park near downtown, and Elm Pointe, north of town on M-66.

Each beach rests on the coveted South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. Elm Pointe’s 10-12 acres includes the beach, as well as a museum and grassy spaces. Tourist Park offers 500 feet of lake frontage, along with a marked swim area, restrooms, beach volleyball, and a pavilion and rental hall.

ADVENTUREHigh ropes adventures are found

at two zipline courses in the Boyne area.

Wildwood Rush opens for the season Friday, May 18, at 02575 Boyne City Road near Young State Park; it closes at the end of October. There is a triple zipline strung 1,200 feet long. A canopy tour covers 50 acres, including nine lines and five suspension bridges. No reservations are needed for the triple, but are required for the canopy tour. Call (231) 582-3400 or (855) ZIP-INFO, or visit www.wildwoodrush.com.

Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls hosts a Zipline Adventure Tour, taking adventurers through the range of hills and valleys at the resort. There are 10 individual lines at lengths up to 780 feet long and heights up to 50 feet. Speeds reach up to 25 mph. Call (231) 549-7256 for days, times and reservations.

The Mountain is partnering with T.C. Paintball as the location for a paintball field for summer weekend use. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance by calling (231) 943-0248. Gear rental is available.

FAMILY FUNNo matter the conditions outside,

Nearly 200 acres and 1.5 miles of Jordan River frontage are found within the three-preserve complex of the Rogers Family, Dressel and Jordan River preserves. Located just downstream from a public boat launch, this is an ideal canoe destination. A 1.5-mile trail is also found on the Rogers Family Preserve.

Preserve maps for the above are available by calling (231) 347-0991 or visiting www.landtrust.org.

Near downtown Boyne City is the more than 300-acre Avalanche Mountain Preserve. Miles of mountain biking and hiking trails wind through the woodland property, and there’s also a disc golf course.

Boyne Mountain Resort in

Boyne Falls offers 32.5 miles of marked trails ideal for biking, with lift access and options to ride down from the top on paved or natural trails.

Northeast of Boyne Falls is Spring Brook Pathway. The trailhead is located near the Chandler Hill and Slashing roads intersection, leading to miles of trails.

Cutting through the 18,000-acre Jordan River Valley is the Jordan River Pathway. The system boasts various trails, with 19.1 miles overlapping the North Country Trail. The area is known for a range of wildlife, along with its namesake river, as well as two overlooks — Deadman’s Hill, with access off U.S. 131 north of Alba, and Landslide, with access at Harvey Road off Alba Road. n

GolfMAPLE RIDGE, BRUTUS

Northern Michigan is indeed a summer paradise, what with its

abundant lakes, rivers and streams, natural woodlands and trails, campgrounds, gorgeous sunsets and near-perfect weather from May through October — to name just a few of its amenities.

At the top of that list for some — no, make that many — is golf, world class golf. Northern Michigan is truly a player’s paradise, and the area caters to all colors in the golf spectrum: The weekend duffer, the beginner to the serious low-handicapper, the serious high-handicapper, the social set, kids, the after-work nine-holer and anyone and everyone else in between.

Here’s an unscientific and subjective guide to the “best ...” that Northern Michigan golf offers.

Best place to impress: Bay Harbor. Boyne Resorts’ crown jewel, just west of Petoskey off U.S. 31, has established itself as one of the state’s, if not the Midwest’s, finest. You’ll be treated like royalty, and you’ll never forget the view and the feeling of 27 of the best holes you’ll ever play. (231) 439-4028.

Best test of courage: Dunmaglas in Charlevoix is not as rugged as it once was, but it still packs plenty of punch and you’d better bring your ‘A’ game. Big-time trouble also lurks at Crooked Tree near Petoskey, as well as any Boyne course, all of which can be as testy as they are beautiful. Dunmaglas: (231) 547-4653. Crooked Tree: (231) 439-4030.

Best place for a family round: Charlevoix Municipal Golf Club, Ye Nyne Olde Holles in Advance, and

Boyne Rapids Adventure Golf in Boyne City. Charlevoix and Ye Nyne are both charming old-style, nine-hole courses, and the atmosphere at both is relaxed. Both courses will challenge even the most experienced player, but they won’t punish a beginner. Boyne Rapids is a scaled-down course with holes ranging from 15-100 yards. Another solid play in this category is The Mallard, just outside of East Jordan. Each of the four courses comes down on the affordable side. Charlevoix Municipal Golf Club: (231) 547-3268. Ye Nyne: (231) 582-7609. Boyne Rapids: (231) 582-3505. The Mallard: (231) 536-3636.

Best place for that old-time feeling: Harbor Point in Harbor Springs and Belvedere in Charlevoix. Harbor Point, which sits on the bluff overlooking Little

THEGUIDE 67

Traverse Bay, features majestic trees and loads of charm. Carts are available, but it’s very walkable and players will feel like they’re stepping back to the days of rumble seats. Rerouting and renovations have done nothing but improve the majestic and classic layout. The Belvedere is simply one of the must-plays in Northern Michigan, if not the state. The former longtime home to the Michigan Amateur is, like Harbor Point, a trip back in time, when the biggest names in golf were Jones, Sarazan and Hogan. Belvedere: (231) 547-2611. Harbor Point: (231) 526-2951.

Best kept secret: Charlevoix Country Club and Indian River Golf Club. Charlevoix is a well-groomed, relatively young course that packs a punch with water on 11 of its 18 holes. It is included in the “Golf Charlevoix” promotion that includes Belvedere and Dunmaglas, each of which offers its own distinct first-class feel. Indian River, just east of the Emmet-Cheboygan County line, is another in the well-kept department that is cut through gorgeous tall hardwoods. Indian River: (231) 238-7011. Charlevoix Country Club: (231) 547-9796.

Best place not to break the bank: There are several good, solid plays in this category, including The Mallard in East Jordan, Springbrook Hills in Walloon Lake, and Bear River Links in Walloon Lake, Maple Ridge in Brutus and Charlevoix Golf Club. You’ll get a nice, fair golf experience at a relatively reasonable rate, and the food and service is top notch at most of these stops. Springbrook: (231) 535-5155. Bear River Links: (231) 535-2400. Maple Ridge: (231) 529-6574.

Best newcomer: True North in Harbor Springs. The 7,000-yard plus layout and amenities are first class all the way. Course designer

Jim Engh brings an impressive resume, one that includes Golf Digest’s 2003 Architect of the Year. True North was rated the state’s No. 4 course allowing public play, and No. 8 overall. (231) 526-3300.

Best place to find a “name” course: Boyne Highlands features two that jump immediately to mind, the Donald Ross Memorial and Arthur Hills. The Ross is a compilation of the famed designer’s favorite holes, from Oakland Hills to Pinehurst No. 2. Hills has designed courses all over the country and his layout at the Highlands has become a must-play on any serious golfer’s list. The Heather at the Highlands is as good as it gets in Northern Michigan and has hosted numerous championships in its history, including the 100th Michigan

Amateur in 2011. Boyne: (800) 462-6963.

Best place to settle a bet: For those among us who may be inclined to play for a little something other than pride when we tee it up with our buddies, Chestnut Valley in Harbor Springs is the perfect venue to settle things up if you’re all-square after 18. Chestnut’s distinctive 19th, a par 3 in the shadow of the club’s beautiful log cabin clubhouse, is just what the doctor ordered. (231) 526-9100.

Best views: There are several courses which take full advantage of sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay as well as the beautiful Northern Michigan countryside. Included in this group are Bay Harbor, Crooked Tree, Harbor Point and Little Traverse Bay Golf Club.

68 THEGUIDE

The view from the Little Traverse Bay restaurant and from the Bay Harbor clubhouse are breathtaking, picture postcard stuff. Little Traverse Bay: (231) 526-6200.

Best bet that you’ll go back again: Hidden River Golf & Casting Club. Extremely well manicured, the course is built along the meandering Maple River and simply put, it’s exceptional and unforgettable, and became the ninth member of Boyne’s stable of championship layouts this year. Hidden River could be in the best kept secret category, but word has spread that this course, with its gorgeous log-cabin style clubhouse and first-rate restaurant, should not be overlooked when it comes to the best the area has to offer. (231) 529-4653.

Best bet to join the elite: The Chief in Bellaire opened its doors a decade ago, and it has established itself as a legitimate layout sure to be mentioned in the same breath as the Hidden Rivers, the Little Traverse Bays and the Charlevoix Country Clubs of the Northern Michigan golf world. The unique layout features dramatic elevation changes and wide variety of holes carved through classic hardwoods. The signature finishing hole is a 420-yard par 4. The Chief’s sister course, Hawk’s Eye, is in the same league. Chief: (231) 533-9000. Hawk’s Eye: (231) 533-4295 n
