State 4-H Interview Contest 2017 Job Descriptions

The Job Interview Contest will once again take place during State Field Day on May 27, 2017. The Interview Contest is a popular event that gives 4-H members an opportunity to practice the real-life skills needed

to apply for a job. Participants prepare a resumé and cover letter for a job they choose from the job descriptions listed below. Evaluators evaluate their performance during a mock interview and give constructive feedback using a standard evaluation rubric.

Interview Contest participants must do the following:

1. Choose a job: Choose from one of the three jobs listed below in your age category.

2. Develop a resumé: Include real-life experiences (education, work, activities, etc.) that demonstrate your qualifications for the job selected.

3. Write a cover letter: Your cover letter should explain why you should be considered for the job selected.

4. Dress appropriately: Appropriate dress includes 4-H uniform or attire appropriate for a job interview as outlined in the California State 4-H Interview Contest Manual.

Participants are encouraged to review the tips, interview questions, judging rubrics and supporting materials provided in the California State 4-H Interview Contest Manual. For more information about the contest please visit: http://4h.ucanr.edu/4-H_Events/SFD/Interview_Contest_/ or contact the contest coordinator, Barbara Crane, [email protected].

Mendocino-Lake 4-H Summer Camp Update

Congratulations to the new youth summer camp staff. We have Directors Megan Franco and Tanner Whetzel and Deans Kyle Rogers, Reed McCarty and Kenzie Kornegay. Thank you to volunteers Leigh Hunt, Walt Christensen, Cathleen Mondfrans and Wendie French-Grimm for evaluating our applicants. Our new Dean and Directors will be meeting soon to set up the schedule for trainings for camp counselors. Applications for Camp Counselors are due February 3, 2017.

An informational meeting will be held January 18, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Ukiah 4-H office and will cover the responsibilities and time commitment to be a camp counselor. This meeting is open to all interested teens and parents to ask questions, share ideas and receive information about 4-H Summer Camp 2017. The Deans and Directors will be explaining our new structure of camp as well as some possible new activities and events. We will also share information about our new facilities at Camp Mendocino Woodlands. The first counselor training meeting will then be held Wednesday February 15 at 6:30 pm at the Ukiah 4-H office. Counselors will have a fee of $135.00 this year. This application is posted on the county 4-H camp website.

The Summer Camp Steering Committee is a group of volunteers that oversee and organize the Mendocino Lake 4-H Camp. The committee is seeking individuals to fill the Executive Director and Program Director positions for our 2017 Summer Camp. Please see the positions on the website for information: http://celake.ucanr.edu/ Mendocino-Lake_4-H_Summer_Camp/ Camp_Steering_Committee/. Our next Steering Committee meeting is January 25, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Ukiah 4H office.

Both the camper and Counselor in Training (CIT) registrations are posted on the camp website. The nonrefundable fee of $100 will be due March 1, 2017 with the remaining $75 balance due April 15. Space is limited and registration forms will be accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis. Anderson Marsh 4-H celebrated the holidays by having a short business meeting followed by many fun activities. Each family brought goodies to share. We had popcorn and hot chocolate. There was a pin the nose on Rudolph contest, paint your own ornaments, best pajama contest, time to visit with our 4-H family. Santa Claus came to visit and each child received a special gift donated by Rainbow Ag and the Harper Family. Each 4-H family returned items purchased for our Christmas. Each item was wrapped and labeled. In addition to gifts our family received Christmas dinner fixings as well as many food pantry items. The family we adopted this year lost their dad recently and their mom is doing her best to support her 4 children. Our officer team presented all the items to the mom.

The Big Valley 4H Club had a busy December. We had a very successful Hot Chocolate Booth at the Kelseyville Lighted Parade. We also had a very yummy holiday cookie exchange and made cute candy cane reindeer. See you next year!

These were the various wrappers (different shifts)---Can you crop and fit them all in? I hate to leave anyone out! Thanks. December brought the Christmas Spirit! At our Dec. meeting club member and foreign exchange student Nik Metreveli from the county of Georgia gave a presentation about the food, culture, language and land marks of his homeland. Later in the month the cooking project made lots of yummy Christmas treats---pumpkin bread, molded chocolate Christmas trees, peppermint bark, and toffee! Then on Dec. 22, families took turns manning the gift wrap table at K-mart. Blue Heron 4-H wishes everyone a happy 2017.

There we exchanged ornaments using a very funny left-right story and ate pizza! We ended the evening by riding our float through Kelseyville caroling and just having fun. We are looking forward to a great year and hope yours is fun too!

It has been a busy couple of months for our club!

November 11th was all about our Veterans – making cards to honor and provide thanks beforehand, and then taking the time on Veteran’s Day to thank them in person and gift them with the cards we made. It’s something the Veterans truly appreciate and it was a great honor to be a part of the celebration. In a dual effort with the Blue Heron club, we also spent time to raise funds raking leaves. Great fun was had by all and the hot chocolate afterwards was delicious! In December, we were able to honor our Veterans again by participating in the Wreaths Across America. It was a very brisk morning and facing the elements were a bit tough on the toes, but the ceremony was beautiful and it was, again, a privilege to honor our Veterans. We closed out the year with our December meeting that included a gift exchange and auction of baked goods to support the Food Bank. Jeff Myrtle led the auction and we all agree he is one of the best and funniest auctioneers. Thank you, Jeff! Lastly, we would like to wish all of our fellow 4-H families a joyful and prosperous 2017!

See you next month!! Submissions must be made by the 4th Monday of the month to make it in the newsletter!
