The Hague What to see

Scheveningen, one of the eight districts

of The Hague, is without a doubt the most

popular seaside resort in the Netherlands. Apart

from the beach, Scheveningen offers many

forms of entertainment, among them the pier, a

shopping promenade and numerous

restaurants, beach pavilions, beach clubs and

beach parties.

The Hague What to see

In the same district is to find the Madurodam Miniature park, where the typical Dutch canal houses, tulip

fields, cheese market, windmills and many other popular buildings of The Hague have been minutely

reproduced.

Spending some free time in the city centre, why not visit the Museum

dedicated to the world-famous graphic artist M.C. Escher with his

so-called impossible constructions, such as Transformations prints and

Metamorphosis.

Or the Peace Palace, built in 1913, which hosts the

International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of

Arbitration, the Peace Palace Library, as well as by The

Hague Academy of International Law.

Surroundings Delft – What to see

Delft has a worldwide reputation due to its connection with Johannes

Vermeer. The Vermeer Centre in Delft offers a visual voyage of

discovery through the life, work and city of the painter. By the way his

major masterpieces are to be found at the Gemeentemuseum in The

Hague, which is hosting a temporary collection from the Mauritshuis

Museum (now partly closed due to expansion and renovation).

Unfortunately the famous painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ (usually on

display at the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, The Hague) is now on

tour in Italy.

What makes this city also a tourist attraction is

the renowned Delftware. Royal Delft is the only

remaining factory of the 32 earthenware factories

that were established in Delft in the 17th century.

Delftware was and is not made from the typical

porcelain clay – used for the Chinese porcelain –

but from clay that is coated with a tin glaze after it

was fired.

Surroundings Rotterdam – What to see

Rotterdam, the second-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam, has many faces: a tough port city, a

trendy nightlife city, a sophisticated shopping city, and a hip artistic city.

One of the icons of Rotterdam are the cubic houses designed by Piet Blom in 1984. 40 conventional houses

were tilted 45 degrees to become the first cube-shaped

houses in Holland. The cubes are prominently located in the

center of Rotterdam and are all occupied except for one,

which is always open to visitors.

The best-known museums in town and two of

Holland’s most sophisticated art museums are

the Boijmans van Beuningen and the

Kunsthal, both located on the Museumpark in

Rotterdam.

Surroundings Rotterdam – What to see

Rotterdam is also known as Manhattan on the Meuse, because of its impressive skyline. When it comes

down to the architecture, this city has a fantastic reputation, and that is no wonder that the Netherlands

Architecture Institute (NAi) was also founded here.

Among the numerous buildings are to be mentioned:

the Erasmus Bridge

The Van Nelle Design Factory (once a coffee, tea and tobacco factory,

nowadays it houses offices, workspaces

and many events)

the NAi building

the Hotel New York

(once the starting place of ships directed to the “promised land”, America, nowadays the

building hosts a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor café as well as

a hotel and maintains the original architecture and interior style.)

Surroundings Amsterdam – What to see

Amsterdam, the capital city and also the most populous within the Kingdom of The Netherlands, combines

its history together with a modern metropolis mentality. Exactly this fusion makes the city so unique.

With over 60 museums, Amsterdam has the highest museum density in the world… just to give you a short

summary of it:

• the Van Gogh Museum

• the National Rijksmuseum (where are to be found among others Vermeer and Rembrandt masterpieces)

• the Hermitage Amsterdam

• the Anne Frank House

If you have the chance, have a walk along the canals. They are the

symbol of the city and have a cultural as well as a historical value. In

2010 the World Heritage Committee decided to submit the 17th century

canal ring area in Amsterdam to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) is

one of the most picturesque bridges

of Amsterdam, and at night it is

romantically illuminated.

Surroundings Amsterdam – What to see/Worth seeing places

Not far away from Amsterdam (around 20 km)

there is Zaanse Schans, an historic village that

with its traditional houses, windmills, warehouses

and workshops, offers a preserved glimpse of

what it was like to live in the Netherlands in the

18th and 19th centuries.

The village is built in the typically Dutch wooden

architectural style, relocated here piece by piece

since 1961.

Here are to be found six windmills (performing various

functions, including a saw mill, a paint mill, and oil

mill), a wooden shoe workshop, a cheese farm and

much more.

Transportation: Zaanse Schans is easy to reach from

Amsterdam's Central Station. A 15-minute train ride

will take you to Koog-Zaandijk and it's a 10-minute

walk from the station.
