WHY HOLLAND?10 fast facts about Holland

In our small country, there are about 17 million inhabitants from 190 different nationalities.

We have a King, Willem-Alexander, who’s birthday is largely celebrated on the 27 April.

Orange is our national colour.

We are happy people. The Dutch are in 6th place in the World Happiness Index.

Cycling is our favorite mode of transport. We have more bikes than people.

Holland is as flat as a pancake and a quarter of our country lies below sea level. Luckily we have around 17,000 km of dikes.

Dutch men are the tallest in the world.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the Netherlands. A bad performance by the national team causes major depression!

You can dance the night away. The best DJ’s are from Holland.

The Netherlands is one of the top 3 coffee drinking

countries in the world.

About the international vibe

Hugo MartinezExchange student from Spain Campus Delft

“ Instead of working on a project on my own, I have the opportunity

to work with students from all over the world. We are making an electric car together. The car is important, of course, but being in

the Netherlands is also a nice change of scenery. The campus is so different

– it’s green and everything here is infused with innovation. ”

HERE’S WHY!

There are many good reasons to study in Holland. Dutch education is one of the most innovative and forward thinking systems in the world. It’s based on student-led learning, debate and hands-on experience. Holland also offers a high standard of living at a fairly low cost. Dutch society is liberal and open-minded with a vibrant cultural scene. You’ll be part of a dynamic cosmopolitan and multi-cultural community right in the heart of Europe. We’re a small country with a big international presence and boast the 18th largest economy in the world. Some of the world’s biggest multinationals, including Philips, Heineken, KLM, Shell, ING Bank and Unilever are Dutch. Sony, Sara Lee and Microsoft all have their European head offices here. It’s an accessible country too. Visas are easy to obtain and you don’t have to worry about speaking Dutch - almost everyone speaks English.

The Netherlands vs. HollandOur official name is ‘The Kingdom of the Netherlands’. Holland only consists of two of our 12 provinces - North and South Holland. But we usually use the name Holland when we refer to the whole country. To make things even more confusing the word ‘Dutch’ is used to refer to someone or something from Holland.

About the capital of law

Diana Carolina BedoyaInternational and European Law studentfrom Colombia

“ I love The Hague. I’m studying International and European Law and this is the perfect

place for that. The Hague is known as the ‘capital of law’. Here, you can find

the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. Also, the city

is really internationally oriented. THUAS students are involved in many events and there are many projects where we get the

chance to debate. What I really like is that we can use the library at the Peace Palace. It’s so cool to be able to study in such a

historical and meaningful environment. ”

About her study choice

Taylor Mae BouwmanEuropean Studies fast-track studentfrom the Netherlands

“Studying at a university of applied sciences suits me really well. In comparison to a research university, the way of educating focuses more on your skills. When you are required to do a

presentation, you will be first taught how to present yourself. How do you make sure

people listen to you? Another difference is the level of personal attention. My tutor is sincerely concerned with my well-being. Lecturers will greet you in the hallway and

know who you are. ”

The difference between a university of applied sciences and a research university

There are two types of universities in the Netherlands - traditional research universities (WO) and universities of applied sciences (HBO). Both offer bachelors and masters programmes, but vary in their teaching methods.

HBO universities, like THUAS, put the emphasis on practical tuition and focus on your future career. You’ll learn by working on ‘real life’ projects in close cooperation with the outside world.

We focus on training and career preparation and work closely with professionals to make sure that our programmes are cutting edge and industry relevant. Businesses and institutions help design our curricula, which means they are hands-on, solution based and market ready. Our lecturers are working professionals, who’ll give you a first-hand insight into their field.

WO universities tend to run more theory and research based courses and students attend larger lectures and work independently. HBOs have a more personal approach with smaller classes.

Please note: A THUAS bachelor will not necessarily qualify you for a master at a WO university in the Netherlands - you may need to take additional courses.

At THUAS we currently run 43 full-time bachelors programmes, 11 of which are taught fully in English. Our bachelors programmes take four years to complete, or three years for a fast-track version. All students get the chance to go on an internship for one semester (half the academic year).

A bachelor programme is a natural progression for many after high school and that first step into higher education. They can vary in structure, from research based to more practical courses.

At THUAS, all of our bachelor’s degrees are founded on international and practical approaches, personal development and academic content. You’ll be taught through a mix of lectures, small group seminars, tutorials, self-guided study, individual assignments and exams, finishing with your thesis.

Bachelor Programmes

Please check www.thehagueuniversity.com/es for the most up to date information on the curriculum.

Curriculum

European Studies 3 and 4 ES is a four-year programme but there is an accelerated, three-year fast-track for students with an appropriate diploma. Both programmes are taught in English.

Politics and the public sector Several ES courses are devoted to European politics and the public policy process, both of which shape the environment in which they will work.

Management and marketing In several key courses, ES students study management and marketing for different organisations and get to know the private sector.

Specialisation You can specialise in politics and public policy or private business, starting in the second year.

Research A successful professional must be able to gather and analyse information. In several courses and projects, you’ll master the research process and develop your critical thinking skills to prepare you for the workplace.

(Intercultural) communication skills The secret to success is the ability to communicate clearly, sometimes across cultural barriers, which is why we offer writing and presenting courses in addition to intercultural communication training.

Modern foreign languages The ability to speak multiple languages is a big plus on any CV and ES gives you the chance to learn one or more languages (other than English) over three or four years.

Exchanges You’ll have the opportunity to go on exchanges at one of our partner universities around the world for five months.

Work placement To complete your studies, you’ll complete a five-month work placement at an international institution, organisation or company in the Netherlands or abroad, to demonstrate that you have what it takes to enter the workforce.

Final project/dissertation You’ll conclude your studies with a final research paper to showcase everything you’ve learnt. It can be a project for a professional assignment provider or a theoretical dissertation.

For the accelerated programme, all subjects are covered in three years.

* Tuition fees are set annually. Please check www.thehagueuniversity.com for updated figures.

ES is an international and interdisciplinary programme that prepares you for a career in business, politics or a non-profit organisation and will empower you as a young European professional to proactively resolve global challenges. Rather than focusing on one specific career, we teach management and marketing for both the public and private sectors, along with foreign languages and international communications skills. We don’t just tell you about the world - you’ll experience it by going on exchanges and international internships that prepare you for a career or master programme.

We’re facing many global challenges such as climate change, migration and obesity. Governments, organisations and citizens need to collaborate to solve these issues. Yet trust in business and political leaders is low. If we’re to solve these issues and restore trust in institutions, things need to change. As a communications professional, you can help organisations use communication to create a better world.

We need marketing and communications specialists that can strengthen relationships with consumers, PR professionals who can win back the trust of stakeholders and leaders who inspire their employees to act with integrity.

On the ICM programme, a new generation of communicators is evolving. We train critical and creative thinkers with a global perspective and a strong international network who work for global brands, NGOs and governments to make a positive impact.

Alina Milovanova Russia

“This is a good place to study English and probably the only one where you can be sure to get the skills to express all your ideas and interact in

English with many different people. ”Alina’s English wasn’t up to the required level to enrol directly in a Bachelor’s programme, so she signed up for a 12-month course at Prep School. Now halfway through the Prep School course, she feels she has made the right choice.

She’s also pleased she has some Russian classmates and gets on so well with her fellow students from countries like China, Iran and Colombia. The opportunity offered by the Prep School of making friends and networking while at the same time improving your English means for Alina that the hard work is alternated with lots of fun. She enjoys the strong focus on language skills. “After just two months, my English had already improved to the point where I understood much more and no longer stumbled when I pronounced tricky words. Speaking and thinking in English is now much easier for me. We also learn about different customs and societies.” With her Prep School diploma in her pocket she feels she has every reason to face the future with confidence.

The Prep School curriculumDuring the year-long course, students will study English intensively in the first term. In terms two, three and four, we apply the English and academic skills you need for an international education to writing academic reports, research, presenting, analysing, reasoning, evaluating, assessing and expressing opinion, critical thinking, debate and team work. You will also learn some useful business English.

About visiting open days

Ásíyih Barker International and European Law studentfrom the United States of America

“ I was very calculating in my choice of school. I am from the USA, so I had to be

really sure that I wanted to live here. Before I made my decision, I went to open days at

Groningen, Maastricht and other universities, including THUAS. I travelled all around

Holland and I saw something in THUAS which was different. Here was a school where you get taught skills, like how to work in teams.

That was so exciting to me. I realised this was a big part of what’s important in education

and what employers look for. ”

Our academic year

Our academic year starts in September and ends in mid-July. It’s divided into two semesters, which are broken down into two periods of six weeks, with a week free between them. The free weeks fall in February/March, May and October. There is also a two week Christmas break.

If you’re educated in the Netherlands, UK, Ireland, USA, Canada (except Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Malta, or hold a diploma (including English as an exam subject) listed at www. thehagueuniversity.com/enrolment, you don’t need to take an English proficiency test. All other applicants are required to have a valid and sufficient English proficiency test.

Applying for the English Academic Preparation SchoolIf you don’t have the proficiency in English that you need in order to enrol on your chosen programme, you can apply for the English Academic Preparation programme, or Prep School, which takes six months or one year. To enrol for Prep School, you need to be eligible for the programme you wish to take after completing the course, have an IELTS or TOEFL test result with sufficient score and a valid residence permit for the Netherlands (if applicable, we can apply for you). You will also need to fill out our online application form.

Scholarships and finances

Visas and permits

EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students pay tuition fees for bachelor and masters programmes. So it’s time to do the maths and explore the many possible loans, grants and scholarships that are available to finance your studies at THUAS.

Accommodation

ScholarshipsInternational students should check if any scholarships are available in their home country. Your local Dutch embassy and present college or university should be able to help with information and application forms.

It’s also worth checking to see if you are eligible for THUAS’s World Citizen Talent Scholarship, Orange Tulip Scholarship or Holland Scholarship.

Find out about available scholarships at www.thehagueuniversity.com/scholarships

Monthly expensesYou’ll also need to take your monthly expenses on accommodation, food and living into account and budget for your time at THUAS.

Experience has shown that students living in the Netherlands for one year spend between € 800 and € 1100 a month.

An average room in the Netherlands costs somewhere between € 300 and € 600 a months. The costs depend on the type of room you have, what is included in the rent, if the room is furnished, if you will have to share your room (or the facilities) and the size of the room. Don’t forget to budget about € 650 per year for medical insurance. Bachelor first year students will also need to invest from € 500 to € 800 on books and materials.
