September The Hansen Collection
RROC So Cal members Ron and Sandy Hansen have invited us to visit their Hansen Collection at RAH Industries on Saturday, September 17th from noon to 3:00 p.m. Hosted by Willy and Joan Hugron, this will be our first visit to this outstanding collection.
To start the day, we will enjoy a catered lunch in the Collection’s 50’s diner. Catering will be by Wood Ranch BBQ, an award-winning restaurant that features “The Food That Makes America Great ®.” Yum!
After lunch we will enjoy a leisurely stroll through the “Barn” and the workshop. There is a 25,000 square foot building dedicated solely to automobile restorations. It’s a state-of-the-art facility with every piece of equipment that you can imagine and probably some that you can’t. The restorations are performed on-site and we will be given a tour of the restoration shop and collection by expert restorer and collection manager Arnold Schmidt. Arnold has 30+ years’ experience restoring and showing cars for his clients.
They are able to restore many wonderful cars including Auburn, Moon, Bentley, Bugatti, Cadillac, Duesenberg, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Maserati, Lincoln, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Mercedes and ,of course, Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
The Hansen Collection has a Barn theme and the building is constructed of 100 year-old reclaimed redwood. The Hansens’ 1925 Rolls-Royce Springfield Silver Ghost Salamanca was featured on the cover of the July 2016 issue of The Spirit of Ecstasy and in the photo the car is shown in the “Barn.”
For those of you who like to take a longer drive or are coming from a distance, please note the later start time for this event. We would really like you to join us so be sure to come out and join us in viewing this fantastic collection and “workshop.”

Dear Fellow RROC Members,
Some of you have been asking me where I traveled this month. Let me explain that these pictures from around the world are not necessarily current, but they are all places that I have been over my approximately fifty years of traveling. This month is Alaska, overlooking a beautiful glacier. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to travel to our beautiful 49th state six times. My first opportunity was when I was 17 years old and my favorite was with my four grandchildren and the rest of my clan. It is a beautiful state and I hope you all have it on your bucket list of places to see.
Summer is just a memory now, but the warm weather and our Southern California drought will stay with us for quite a bit longer. I hope you have enjoyed your summer and have had some excellent drives in your beautiful PMC. And with fall right around the corner, we’re moving into our busy time of year. Be sure and pencil in our fall events on your calendar so that you don’t miss any of the excitement!
I want to personally thank Dr. Donald and Laura Wise for the wonderful event at the Marconi Museum and the charming private lunch at the enchanting Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar in the District. It was so nice of the restaurant to open up for just our group and to furnish several personable, highly experienced wait staff to take care of our every need. We were able to pick and choose from their generous menu with choices in soups and salads, four main courses and a choice of dessert. The conversations were great, our plates were cleaned and our faces were smiling as we said good-bye to one another.
The rest of the year is full of exciting events beginning in September with the Hansen Collection in Valencia, hosted by Willy and Joan Hugron. October brings us the always fun and unpredictable Fox Hunt so start getting your Fox Hunt paraphernalia together, including that fox tail that one member always has peeking out of the boot of his PMC. Freddy and Fredericka are waiting for us! If you aren’t sure what a Fox Hunt is or don’t know who Freddy and Fredericka are, take a look at the article on page 5.
We have a special weekend planned for Palm Springs in November, which will start with a lunch at the Mission Inn on Friday and follow that with a weekend full of fun and great food. Be sure to mark your calendars now for this great weekend. The year will conclude with our amazing Holiday Party, which will also be our Awards Ceremony. This event always sells out and your holiday schedule will fill up early, so be sure to mark December 18th on your calendars now and plan on joining us to celebrate our members’ accomplishments this year and to enjoy this wild and wacky event

SEPTEMBER 2016
His obsession with originality of these rare automobiles knows no bounds. He spends months searching auto trading web sites and attending endless auctions in pursuit of the ‘perfect’ car. His relentless insistence on excellence drives him to search out only those cars with impeccable interior leather; flawless exterior paint; and low mileage--each car has no more than 20,000 miles on the engine. Every detail must be superior and as near to ‘showroom ready’ as possible and includes all materials available at the time of original purchase at a Rolls- Royce dealer in 2000. His attention to detail includes original owner manuals; brochures; technical data sheets; medical kit; tire kit and even matching umbrellas.
As he said, “All the cars in this competition were excellent and the participants, especially Dr. Juergen von Bleich, were so helpful and welcoming to a newcomer that I felt it an honor to compete with such knowledgeable and experienced Rolls-Royce owners. I am looking forward to seeing my new friends at future RROC events.”
(We want to thank and acknowledge the management of the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach who were extremely cooperative in allowing the photo shoot of the PMC on their property.)
The Cover Story
WINNER: 1st Place Concours, 21st Century Class Rolls Royce Owners Club 2016 Concours de’Elegance, Santa Anita, California
2000 Bentley Arnage
The winner of this year’s Concours de’Elegance 21st Century Class, Mr. William A. Greene, is honored to be the recipient of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club’s 1st place Concours in the 21st Century class award at this prestigious event. The beautiful black/emerald 2000 Bentley Arnage (LC1-05797) is one of six automobiles in his specialized collection of mint condition “Year of the Dragon” Bentleys.
A Bentley 2000 is particularly special because it is the first of the Bentley Series to return to the authentic Rolls-Royce engine and is also a Millennial Dragon Year, held in high esteem by many Asians the world over.
An avid and somewhat obsessive collector, Mr. Greene is a Birth Dragon, as learned from his teacher when his 2nd grade class toured the “Year of the Dragon” Museum Exhibit. He realized at that time they were all ‘little dragons’ and this made a distinct impression and has been a guiding factor in his life, inspiring the Dragon Bentley Collection.

The Hunt is On!!!
Freddy has been out and about has narrowed his search to the Toluca Lake/ Griffith Park area for the perfect area to lead us on our merry hunt. He has decided not to keep the date a secret and it is Sunday, October 23rd. He is such a secretive fellow but it was well worth the wait because he always keeps us on our toes. We will be able to display OUR knowledge by answering many tough, but interesting, questions about places and things that we see along the way.
The challenge is on in just a month or so. Will you be ready? Start planning now!
What is a Fox Hunt?By Dori Olsen
In this issue of the newsletter, you will notice the full size picture of two foxes, elegantly garbed, sitting on the bumper of a Rolls-Royce. Allow me to introduce to you Freddy and Fredericka, the mascots of the RROC So Cal annual Fox Hunt and also the quest of the Hunters. As you can see, the So Cal Fox Hunt is not a blood sport and no shotguns or hounds are required.
So what are we doing? In OUR Fox Hunt, the hosts of the Hunt (the Hunt Masters) determine a route that all Hunters will follow. Do you receive a map? Of course not! What kind of challenge would that be? The route is determined by the answers to questions that you are given at the beginning of the hunt, with the answers being developed along the route. The questions relate to places and things that you will see along the route and there may be scheduled stops at various landmarks where you may obtain game pieces, puzzle pieces or even Freddy. Each Hunt is different and is developed by the hosts.
The day typically begins with the Hunt Breakfast, comprised of pastries, fruit, juice and coffee. The Hunters will gain sustenance for the Hunt, converse with fellow Hunters and receive the Hunt packet with directions and the questions for the Hunt. Hunt attire is not required but it is so much more fun when the participants dress for the part! A simple hat with a feather, a red or plaid vest, some black leather boots, jodhpurs if you want to go all out; all are some ideas for Hunt attire. A fox’s tail has been noted sticking out of the boot of a PMC on previous Fox Hunts so the idea is to just have fun.
Now, because someone has to drive and it’s really much safer to have at least one other person in your PMC with you to watch both sides of the road for the answers to the questions, you might want to create a Hunt Team. The team is limited only by your imagination. You may want to intentionally invite “back seat drivers” because in this instance, they are actually helpful!
If everything goes wonderfully with your team, you all will arrive at the surprise destination, where a delightful lunch awaits you. But alas, if you take a side route and are totally befuddled, all is not lost. In your packet is a panic envelope which you may open to find out the location of the lunch. There is a penalty however; you will not be able to win the Hunt for that year.
As we gather for our luncheon, the Hunt Master will give the answers to the various questions and everyone will score their sheet. But what if there is a tie? The Hunt Master has prepared technical and/or tricky and/or historical questions about Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles, history, manufacturing and anything else that they can think of to differentiate between the Hunters’ scores.
Stephen SchaibleSanta Barbara
Arnold StevensReno, Nevada
At the conclusion of lunch, the Hunt Master will announce the winners of the Hunt and will present the perpetual Fox Hunt Trophy. And did I mention that the winners are guaranteed the honor and pleasure of hosting the next year’s Hunt?
So come on out and join us for this totally crazy and fun event! You all will have a great time!

The 2016 RROC Annual Meet at Asheville, North Carolina
By Glen MacDonald
If you have never been to a Rolls-Royce Owner’s Club Annual Meet, you owe yourself the treat. These are great events for anyone intereted in Rolls-Royce and Bentley PMC’s - and looking for a really enjoyable time. This year’s Meet took place from July 31 to August 4 at Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville itself is well worth a visit. Sitting at 2,134 feet in elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has long been a resort destination. The town, with its many fine restaurants and art galleries, is surrounded by wooded mountains dotted with lovely homes ranging from cottages to palatial mansions. The most famous of the latter being the world famous Biltmore Estate created by the Vanderbilt Family. Meet participants had passes to the Biltmore Estate and House that were good throughout the Meet. The chateauesque house encompasses over 178,000 square-feet and is the largest private home in the United States.
The headquarters for the National Meet was the stunning Grove Park Inn which has hosted the rich and famous since first opening in 1913. In fact, ten Presidents have stayed at Grove Park including Barak Obama. The Inn and the views from it are stunning. In the conference area the RROC National HQ set up Meet Registration along with a large vendors area. Here you could find everything from new parts sold by Bentley Motors to rare antique Rolls-Royce tools and accessories. It is impossible to resist buying something. Since I came prepared for heat, and many of the meeting rooms were quite cool, I purchased a Bentley sweater to keep warm when inside! The folks from the National HQ and from the Southeast Region did a wonderful job keeping things running smoothly and making everyone feel welcome.
The first few days of the Meet were taken up with various driving tours through the local countryside and a number of seminars and technical sessions. The sessions included presentations by both Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Bentley Motors on their latest news and products. There were also lectures by knowledgeable experts on topics of historical interest such the role of Silver Ghosts in the First World War. For gear-heads like me the technical sessions are a must. I particularly enjoyed the seminars on Silver Shadow hydraulics, prewar brake systems and prewar small horsepower engines. The latter featured a complete engine with large cut-away sections exposing the inner workings of a typical; 20/25 or Darby Bentley motor. In addition there were roundtables and information exchanges on topics such as Early Postwar cars and Derby Bentleys.
There were a number of great social activities that revolved around receptions and meals. I enjoyed getting together with good friends at the Early Postwar Lunch held at the nearby Golden Fleece restaurant. There were also a series of restaurant dinner tours in downtown Asheville. Here you could join other club members and visit three different establishments for tasting menus and wine or beer pairings. A great way to get to know the local eateries and other RROC members.
The big day was Thursday August 4th. In the morning there was the concours and judging of the cars. One cannot imagine a more magnificent setting. The judging field was spread over the lawn of the Biltmore Estate with the Biltmore House providing an impressive backdrop to the assembled Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. There had been a worry that rain would preempt the use of the lawns, but the weather was kind and all went well. In a break from tradition, the field was open to members of the
general public. Some 200 PMC’s were registered and those on the field ranged from pre-First World War Silver Ghosts to the latest Wraiths and Continentals. So much history, beauty and examples of hard work and the artistry of restoration is hard to describe, especially matched with the exceptional setting, and the day was stunning.
In the afternoon the participants gathered back at the Grove Park Inn for a reception hosted by St. James Press for the launch of the 2016 RROC Year Book and the major awards from the day’s judging. Your humble scribe was particularly excited as he had authored an article for the Yearbook on the Bentley Mk VI. The winning cars were arranged near the entrance to the Grove Park and elegantly dressed participants mingled and admired the winners. Following the reception, the assembly withdrew to the ballroom to enjoy a sumptuous banquet and amiable conversation.
I offer my thanks to organizers Mary White and Jeff Trepel and all the volunteers from the Southeast Region for organizing such a successful RROC Annual Meet. I know Jeff personally and saw the work he and others put into this event over the past year or two and during the Meet itself. Well done!
This is the fourth National Meet I have attended and I have enjoyed each one. If you can bring your car to the Annual Meet and take part in the tours and Concours it is great. Alas, I have never been able to bring one of my PMC’s and still find the Meets are fun and highly worthwhile. I am sure you will too. Next year’s Annual Meet is at the historic French Lick Resort in Indiana. It promises to be a great event. We in California are fortunate that in two years the Northern California Region is hosting the National Meet right here at Lake Tahoe. Good for them! This will afford many of us in the Southern California Region the chance to attend with our PMCs. You won’t want to miss it.

Fix’n Automobile TrimBy Harold Pope, Guest Author
Modern cars have little or no exterior stainless steel trim. I have a 1963 Ford Galaxie Fastback 500 XL, a 1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 4 door and more than a few Model A Fords. All are afflicted with stainless steel trim. So what’s to be done when a dent is incurred? The answer is “Fix it!” And it is that easy!
Gather up some household stuff like: a) WD40, b) tack hammer (small headed hammer), c) “Bic” or similar long necked propane BBQ lighter, d) clay (Handi-Tak), e) soft solder (recommend Cerrobend 158’-190’F alloy), and f) your trim piece. All of these items are reusable.
Cerrobend is a soft alloy. It melts in hot water at 158’F. (How hot is your coffee?) I purchased a small ingot that melts between 158’ F to 190’F. I wanted a higher temp tougher product for longevity purposes. The propane lighter is sufficient to melt the alloy. Google Cerrobend to find a vendor. The ingot shown was $25.00 with postage.
View the dented trim below.
Flip the trim, dented side down. About 3” on either side of the dented spot, fill the trim with clay, making sure the Cerrobend won’t leak out. Move another 3” from that clay piece and apply more clay. You have now made a space for the Cerrobend to collect. Apply WD40 to the collection site so that the alloy won’t stick.
When melting the ingot, rather than hold it, cut off a 3/8” width and 2” length. There are two reasons for this suggestion. 1) You will learn how much alloy is necessary. 2) How long does it take to hold a hot horseshoe? Place the Cerrobend in the trough of the damaged trim clay side up. Using the “Bic”, apply heat to the underneath (good side), being careful not to spill the molten metal. Keep the trim level.
