W Don’t Recruit!?:

Dispelling the Myth

in NPHC and MGCTM

THERE AREN’T ENOUGH “QUALIFIED” POTENTIALS

AT MY PWI!

WE ARE DIFFERENT THAN IFCAND NPC – SO WE CAN’T

RECRUIT LIKE THEM!

QUALITY V. QUANTITY!

THEY COME TO US –WE DON’T GO TO THEM!

HOW CAN GREEK LEADERSMAKE A DIFFERENCE

ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE ON CAMPUS?

“We Don’t Recruit!”, or “If they want to be down they need tocome to us-we don’t go to them.” Time and time again, theseexpectations generally smother the enthusiasm that studentshave every semester to join African-American (NPHC) andMulticultural (MGC) Greek Letter Organizations. However, onmany campuses where students of color are not the majority, this mentality leads to a number of challenges in connecting new students with culturally-based Greek-Letter organizations .

This interactive and engaging multimedia session is speciallydesigned for culturally-based Greek-Letter councils to developshort and long term recruitment plans. These plans will em-power culturally-based Greek-Letter organizations to demon-strate that they are not only relevant, but marketable to a di-verse group of students who find membership desirable.

Historical snippets, examinations and comparisons with othernon-greek organizations, groups and teams and an assess-ment of marketing and branding strategies allow for par-ticipants to clarify their traditions, refocus their purpose and strengthen their chapters. This understanding and transfor-mation grounded in quality over quantity will empower par-ticipants with practical tips and best practice to facilitate ahealthy and consistent membership growth for years to come.

The Evolution of

Pledging, Hazing

and Intake

WHY DID THE PLEDGE PROCESS CHANGE?

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN PLEDGING AND HAZING?

HOW DOES MEDIA

INFLUENCE PERCEPTIONSWHEN HAZING OCCURS?

HOW CAN YOU MANAGE EXPECTATIONS OF YOUR

PROPHYTES?

HOW DO HAZING LAWSIMPACT YOU PERSONALLY

AND PROFESSIONALLY?

Clearly, the proverbial “elephant in the room” which all Black Greek-Letter Organizations must confront is their membership process for its new initiates. A long history of increasingly violent behavior eventu-ally led to a 1990 elimination of a sanctioned pledge process in National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations. Irrespective of the new member change, underground “pledge” activities have resulted in count-less injuries and sometimes death. This highly interactive and engaging session confronts the harsh realities of this change by creatively incorpo-rating and blending history, audience participation, Afri-can traditions and the mass media’s influences through pop culture.

The facilitator utilizes this context to outline short and long term solutions that members can implement to curb this destructive behavior, break the systemic cycle and change the culture of hazing. Don’t miss a fun filled, educational and empowering session.

GPS is used when a person is unsure of a route to a destination or traveling to an unfamiliar location. In relation to your success plan, what is your personal GPS? Are you setting goals without route or without direction? If you have a plan, what is your contingency when the plan takes a sudden turn off course? This exciting, interactive, and thought-provoking session provides the participants with the route, direction, and blueprint for professional development as a college student.

A prerequisite of being an effective leader of teams and organiza-tions is developing the maturity, character, and insight to lead yourself. Talent, charisma, and ambition alone are not enough to move your leadership success beyond average and breakthrough to extraordi-nary. Skills, insight, and wisdom provide that extra “edge”. This wisdom is creatively presented as seeds, nuggets for life, which are planted to manifest success.

Interactive exchanges, relevant stories, and candid antidotes are blended to provide students with clear guidelines and methodologi-cal steps toward individual and collective success. Participants are challenged delve below the surface and evaluate the behaviors that sometimes hinder growth. Participants will also explore ways to holisti-cally improve themselves, personally, academically and professionally in an effort toward reaching their full potential in a more balanced and healthy manner. By using this collective approach, participants are inspired to embrace changes that will help them become the phenomenal leader that they are destined to be! This interactive and engaging session helps students minimize obligations to maximize their performance. Students will learn strategies to prioritize their obligations, decrease their commitments, and ultimately increase their overall impact as a student leader.

Throughout the process, participants will also learn how to address student apathy by targeting different sections of the student body to increase overall participation. The facilitator creatively fosters a fun and engaging environment by utilizing interactive exercises, group breakouts, self-reflection, and multi-media. This multifaceted approach provides student leaders the tools they need to make powerful, posi-tive, and personal paradigm shifts.

By blending energy, stress, and time management principles with real life experiences, from both a personal and professional perspective; the presenter outlines impactful, short and long term strategies, in a fun session that will empower you to manifest Next Level Leadership and success! Two different female archetypes. Two different public per-ceptions. Which one best exemplifies you? The answer may seem obvious at first, however, the closer you exam-ine behaviors the less clear this seems to be. Being loud, rude, assertive and aggressive is construed as being “an angry black woman.” Women that are subtle, reserved, and quiet are often dismissed as being passive and not “a team player.” Where is the balance? This interactive session, geared toward Black women, addresses the im-portance of image and the role it plays in how others perceive Black women in professional environments.

In her witty and tell-it-like-it-is manner, Pitts-Kyser also breaks down the many stereotypes about Black women as she provides insight on the traits needed to succeed in a professional environment. She also calls attention to the behaviors that will prevent women from advancing in their careers. Through this powerful, humorous, and dy-namic workshop, women are encouraged to consider the current image they are projecting and are provided proven strategies on how to address challenges as they work toward success in career and life!

Chaz Pitts-Kyser is a writer and speaker with a passion for empowering college students and young professionals to achieve personal and career success. She received a master’s degree in publishing from Pace University and bachelor’s degrees in journalism and sociology from Texas State University. In her career, she has worked as an editor, college journalism instructor, and as a consultant facilitating writing, self-publishing and career workshops.

At the age of 21, she became one of the youngest African-Americans in the nation to serve as the managing editor of a black-owned weekly newspaper. While working in this position and struggling with life after college, the idea for a career guide

for female college graduates came to her. However, she had to wait until she had more career and real-life experiences to publish it. In 2007, she published her first career guide, Embracing the Real World: The Black Woman’s Guide to Life After College. The book remains the first and only book published that addresses the unique experiences black women graduating from college face upon entering the workforce. For her work on this ground-breaking book that served to uplift and coach thousands of young black women, Chaz was honored by Tyra Banks as one of four black women making black history in 2008. This also started her career as a sought-after speaker on career/life topics. Her most popular sessions include “Overcoming Self-Doubt & the Fear of Failure,” “Building & Maintaining a Positive Image,” “Excellence Always Begins Today: 4 Strategies to Make the Next 4 Years Really Count,” and “More Like Michelle, Less Like Madea: Black Women and Professionalism.”

Chaz recently published her second book, Careeranista: The Woman’s Guide to Success After College. Created for women of all ethnicities, the book is filled with information that has given countless young women the confidence and knowledge needed to build careers even more fulfilling than they imagined. Through Careeranista.com, Chaz is now working to inspire and educate young women with career articles and videos on a range of topics, as well as profiles of rising stars in various industries. Careeranista will also be launching books, e-guides and other products created to better position young women for success in every area of their lives.

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words what is your image say-ing? As superficial as it sounds, opportunities can be offered or denied based on your outward appearance. Image is a consistent brand - something you always represent. Dressing professionally is not something that should only be considered right before a job interview or attending a formal event. Our wardrobes should always include a variety of outfits for multiple occasions.

This powerful and highly interactive session empowers par-ticipants with realistic strategies to improve your daily image. What outfits are appropriate for an after-hours work function? How can you afford to look nice on a tight college budget? Where can you shop but still have style at affordable prices? All of these questions and many more are addressed in this timely, relevant and fun program. The facilitator also delves deeper and challenges collegiate students to reach their full potential not just externally but internally as well. By reinforc-ing basic core values participants are encouraged to choose a brand that consistently reflects their internal characteristics as well. This presentation empowers participants to prepare themselves with a better image to serve their families, campus, community and most of all themselves. CHAZ PITTS-KYSEROvercoming Self-Doubt & Fear of Failure
