And before you know it mid-October will be here and we’ll be moving in! I have been asked many times what makes for a good community. My answer is al- ways, a good base of volunteers; members taking the time to serve on a committee or a Board for the betterment of others. Without volunteers a community has no direction and will often flounder when trying to meet the needs of its owners. The reason I mention this is at the August Board of Directors meeting, the Board made a decision regarding the use of the old golf shop area. The board’s decision is to use the vacated space as an exercise facility. The room is rather small at about 500 square feet and it doesn’t have enough room to accommodate a lot of people at any one time, it is however, large enough to accommodate a few pieces of equipment. As to what type of equipment is the question? The Board has asked to have an Exercise Committee formed to look into the needs and make a recommendation. Hello Homeowners, The new Golf Shop project is moving along nicely. The roof is on and the building is pretty much water tight. NOTES FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

The Bodega Bay Wine Tasters is not a club – everyone is welcome. Our objectives are to have fun while learning about wines, decide which wines you like and avoid being intimidated by a wine list when you go out to a restaurant.

The September tasting will feature value “Cabs” under $30 . . . no, no, not a used Checker from some New York hack, we’re talking Cabernet Sauvignon. Our presenters Dan Belfiori and Judith Hager Belfiori are making this a group participation event and are asking you wine tasters for your favorites at $30 or less. Please email your

suggestions earliest to [email protected], or call Dan at: 707-696-5258.

The tasting will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 pm

September 27th, at the Bodega Harbour Yacht Club.

You’ll need 5 glasses for this tasting. Please email

your RSVP to: [email protected]. Cheers! See

you there.

“In our recent Board Meeting it was noted that our Reserve Account is in a strong position, and that projected future income and expenses anticipate that this position will be maintained for the foreseeable future. With this expectation the Board has recommended that a committee be formed to review investment opportunities for available funds.

If you would like to participate on this committee please contact Len Coster, BHHA Treasurer at [email protected], or at 561-801-0411. We hope to make a decision regarding the committee membership prior to the September Board Meeting. Len Coster

NEWS FROM THE PRO SHOP

WOMEN’S GOLF

It is a wild month here in Bodega Bay- between the sun, the fog and the construction; it is never a dull moment. I hope you were able to join us for our Shot Gun round and General Meeting this month. After golf we met at the lovely home of Brooks, and had a light buffet and rapid-fire meeting. Look for the minutes in your inbox! New for us- please let the Pro Shop know that you are golfing on Tuesday, but we will be making up groups in the order that you check in to the Pro shop to pay your sweeps. We are trying this out for the remainder of the year. The Niners are moving back to Thursday afternoons, and we still have informal play on Thursday mornings. The planning for our Invitational “A Day at Churchill Downs” is in the backstretch, and we will be at the post on September 24th with the Auction, and in the

home stretch on the 25th with the Golf Round, hoping for a blanket finish. You know I am just horsing around, but I hope you did not miss the break! Low gross in August was yours truly, and low putts was Laura Dangers with 28. And I love this one: If you're caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron. ~Lee Trevino Your Captain, Mary Kilkenny

JUNIOR TENNIS OF SUMMER 2012

Another fun year of working with our junior tennis

players has come and gone! We had 42 participants

this year – ranging in age from 5 to 15. Tennis

Professional Jen Ham taught three classes on the

upper courts.

Our Bodega Harbour Tennis Team worked with the

beginners and had two classes on court #1. A very

special THANK YOU to the helpers - Barbara Bowen,

Jane Herlihy, Karen Lode, Sherrie Moore, Jack Mullen,

Teresa & Joe Toscano, and Gitte Welsh. Also thank

you to the grandparents and parents for encouraging

your future tennis stars and getting them to class

each day on time! It was a great week and such a

joy to see all those youngsters enjoying the tennis,

golf and swimming programs.

LANDSCAPE NEWS

THE SNAIL IS THIS MONTH’S FAVORITE PEST

The brown garden snail, is the most common snail

causing problems in California gardens. It was

introduced from France during the 1850s for use as

food. A good snail and slug management program

relies on a combination of methods. The first step is to

eliminate, as much as possible, all places where they

can hide during the day. Boards, stones, debris, weedy

areas, leafy branches growing close to the ground, and

dense ground covers such as ivy are ideal sheltering

spots. Make a regular practice of trapping and

removing snails and slugs from these areas. Though

baits can be part of a management program, it is better

to use them in conjunction with other methods. Plant

selection can greatly affect how difficult your battle with

snails and slugs will be. Choose snail-proof plants;

many plants resist snail and slug damage including

begonias, California poppy, fuchias, geraniums,

impatiens, lantana, nasturtiums as well as many plants

with stiff leaves and highly scented foliage such as

lavender, rosemary, and sage. Most ornamental,

woody plants, and ornamental grasses also aren’t

seriously affected. If you design your landscape using

snail and slug resistant plants, you are likely to have

very limited damage. Handpicking can be very

effective if done thoroughly on a regular basis. At first

you should look for snails and slugs daily, paying

careful attention to potential hiding places. After the

population has noticeably declined, a weekly

handpicking can be sufficient.

To draw out snails and slugs, water the infested area in the late afternoon. After dark, search them out using a flashlight, pick them up (rubber gloves are handy when slugs are involved). You can trap snails and slugs beneath boards or flower pots that you position throughout the garden and landscape. Inverted melon rinds also make good traps. Construct wooden traps using 12- by 15-inch boards (or any easy-to-handle size) raised off the ground by 1-inch runners. The runners make it easy for the pests to crawl underneath. Scrape off the accumulated snails and slugs daily and destroy them; crushing is the most common method. Don’t use salt to destroy snails and slugs, since it will increase soil

salinity.

Some people use beer-baited traps buried at ground level to catch and drown slugs and snails that fall into them. Because it is the fermented part of the product that attracts these pests, you also can use a sugar-water and yeast mixture instead of beer. However, these traps aren’t very effective for the labor involved. Beer traps attract slugs and snails within an area of only a few feet, and you must replenish the bait every few days to keep the level deep enough to drown the mollusks. Traps must have deep, vertical sides. Garlic Spray: Make up some garlic juice spray (1gl water, 6 tsp. garlic juice) put in your sprayer; and

apply in the infested areas.

And, lastly, many swear by SLUGGO – It is labeled

“for organic gardening”

BODEGA HARBOUR HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Saturday, July 21, 2012

Clubhouse– 9:00 a.m.

Directors Present

President Warden, Directors Carpenter, Coster, Johnstone, Moore, Osborne and Tchirkine were present.

Staff Present

Bob Harchut, General Manager

Nancy Sitchler, Executive Secretary

Staff Absent

Steve Argo, KSM Regional

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by President Warden at 9:00 a.m.

Roll Call

Roll was called and the presence of a quorum was established.

President’s Report

President Warden welcomed new Board Directors Len Coster, Ben Johnstone and Mina Tchirkine. He reported that the Board

met after the May meeting to discuss a legal issue and again following the Annual Meeting to hold their organizational meeting.

At this meeting, the following officers were appointed: Nancy Sitchler as Executive Secretary, Len Coster as Treasurer, Mac

Carpenter as Vice President and Don Warden as President.

General Manager’s Report

Bob Harchut reported May and June were good months for us and a nice finish to our fiscal year. Revenues were better than

budget by $85k and Net Operating Income (NOI) better than budget by $35k. Year to date revenues were $217 better than

planned, our NOI was up by $64k and $96k better than last year. Overall it was a great year with increased rounds and an in-

creased patronage in the restaurant. We have 50 kids this year participating in our annual swim lessons. They will now be water

safe in the community. We will see about 35 kids with our Golf and Tennis Camps. The Pro Shop project was awarded to Mid-

state for an amount of $616k. They have started and are already ahead of schedule with a completion date of mid October which

is exciting.

Treasurer’s Report & Quarterly Financials

New Treasurer Coster reported that as of June 30, 2012 the association had cash equivalents in various accounts totaling

$1,507,504.58. This includes funds held at Charles Schwab in the Reserve account totaling $1,267,286.76 and $4,975.91 in the

Savings account. Funds held at WestAmerica Bank total $227,076.23 in the Deposit account and $8,165.68 in the Operating ac-

count.

Consent Calendar

Motion made by Director Osborne to approve the minutes from the May 19, 2012 meeting as written. Director Moore seconded

and motion passed.

Open Forum

Homeowner John Stewart had suggestions to try and help involve homeowners more with the Board. He suggested a link put on

the website for members to email a comment or question to the Board, video streaming the meeting and possibly reducing the

period of time for serving on the Board. President Warden thanked Mr. Stewart for his comments and something to discuss since

to make any term changes, the CC&Rs would need to be changed and that there is a spot on the website members can send com-

ments/questions to the Board or President.

Committee Reports

Landscape Review Committee: Director Moore reported there were fifteen view blockages confirmed since no meeting was

P A G E 1 0

T H E H A R B O U R T I D I N G S S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 2

held in June.

Design Review Committee: Chair Jan Fisher reported that there was not a meeting in July but wanted to report on the June

meeting. There were two issues regarding driveways and prefinished fiber cement siding resolved. It was noticed on driveways

that the lamp black has been fading so research was done and found out that if an iron oxide mix is used, it appears to last longer.

The committee approved two prefinished Hardie colors that will blend in with our approved colors.

Greens Committee: There was no meeting.

Disaster Preparedness/Security Committee: Director Osborne reported that there was no meeting. So far the Committee has a

total of $10,500 toward the purchase of the Red Cross $15k trailer. Next drill in station 5, station 1 and Bodega Bay on Wednes-

day, August 1st.

Dining & Amenities Committee: Chair Bob Haire reported they had their quarterly meeting. Ideas to try to entice more busi-

ness were discussed, including adding another night for dinner to be served. Hoping the sign could be improved with regards to

lighting and Ocean View made larger. The sign on the hill to be more stylish and a changeable sign down at street level to an-

nounce special events, like Dinner Tonight or Live Music, etc for example.

Community Relations Committee: Nothing to report today.

It's September already...where has the summer gone? (must be what the teachers think!) BBES has a new teacher this year; first new teacher in at least 18 years! Until he gets into his new sur-roundings and meets his students, we have no idea what he may or may not want from volunteers. Ms Smith's Kindergarten - 2nd grade class will still ask for listeners to assist the children, one on one, as they work on their reading skills.

If you have any interest in being a part of the new school year, please give me a call. Jo Ann @ 875-2348

In Loving Memory

Tom Shea died August 11, 2012 in Santa Rosa, leaving his wife Betty Shea and many close friends. He would have been 86 August 31. They were longtime residents of Bodega Harbour from 1987 to 2010. Tom was one of the founding mem-bers of the Men’s Investment Club, he was a mem-ber of the Men’s Golf Club and chaired one of the Men’s Windward Invitationals and also served as an HOA Board member. He and Betty started the first

wine booth at Fisherman’s Festival on behalf of the Sea Gals. Tom volunteered for many charitable and community events including Women’s Golf and Sea Gals. He was an avid wine collector and for the last ten years enjoyed visiting the Sonoma Re-gional Parks. He will be greatly missed!

BBFPD Last month, I explained what a Paramedic can do. In August, Josh Perucchi, graduated from the Paramedic Academy in Santa Rosa. The District now has 5 paramedics and 4 EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians). We are constantly working on upgrading the training and certifications to ensure we meet the needs of the community. Please look at your house number. If it can't be seen from the street, emergency personnel can't see it either. This could delay firefighters and/or the sheriff

from responding to an emergency at your home. At the very least, make sure your address numbers "contrast" with the background or siding of the house. John Doolittle Director, BBFPD

riates don’t much like babies. And they don’t like fidelity ei-ther…. At this point Pauline Pfeiffer worms her way into the novel so boldly that even Hadley senses trouble…. In a feat of world-class back stabbing she crusades secretly to become Heming-way’s next wife (the second of four). This is a work of literary tourism that expertly flatters readers. It invokes an artist-packed Paris where “nearly anyone might feel like a painter”. It keeps Hadley so trusting and good hearted that it’s impossible for the reader not to spot trouble i.e. get smart before she does. And it heats up a blaze of righteous indignation on her behalf.”

On Monday, September 10th Jan Fisher will present “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain. (Please note change of date due to Labor Day Holiday.)

Excerpts from New York Times Review dated 2/27/201 “The heroine of The Paris Wife is Hadley Richardson, the athletic, sturdily built, admittedly unfashionable homebody who married Ernest Hemingway in 1921. They were di-vorced in 1927. Hadley was, by all accounts including this one, a very fine and decent person, but she was the starter wife of a man who wound up treating her terribly. Had she not married him, no novelist would be telling her story…. Hadley’s real voice, at least as quoted in Hemingway’s Par-is memoir, A Moveable Feast, isn’t dissimilar to Ms. McLain’s version. But in the context of his writing she sounds much livelier. Historically Hemingway used his first wife as a sounding board as he framed his own ideas. He also invoked her with wit, selectivity and care…. Once the couple gets to Paris, the book’s real name drop-ping begins. Along came Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein and James Joyce…. The noisy, real life characters in The Sun Also Rises suddenly drop into the story en masse. … Once the Hemingways’ son is born Hadley’s situation rapidly becomes untenable. Hard partying bohemian expat-
