PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It is with deep regret that I report the passing of Compatriot Willard L. Brown who died on August 28, 2017. Compatriot Brown, an ancestor of Patriot Christopher Stull, had been a member of the society for over twenty years.

In August, the Chapter had to vacate the office space at 19 E. Church St. This was at the direction of the city. The reason given was the Downtown Frederick Partnership should not have subleased the space to us. Don Deering and I have been investi-gating other options in town for rent-free space. In the interim, Mary Mannix, Manager of the Mary-land Room at FCPL, has graciously offered us the use of a conference room for our Executive Com-mittee meetings.

The Mid-Atlantic States Conference was held in Gettysburg this past August and the Chapter was represented by President Pat Barron, 1st VP Gene Moyer, 2nd VP Ron Harbaugh and Treasurer Doug Favorite. Past President Don Deering also attended in his capacity as current MDSSAR President.

On August, 26, 2017, Compatriot George Delaplaine presented the SAR Eagle Scout certifi-cate to Ryan Fulmer of Troop 1011 at the Court of Honor ceremony held at the Glen Eyler American Legion Post in Woodsboro, MD. Eagle Scout Ful-mer is the son of Richard and Billie Fulmer of Walkersville, MD.

Ryan completed his Eagle Board of Review at the age of thirteen. He has earned thirty-nine merit badges with the requirement for Eagle being only twenty-one. For his service project, Ryan designed and led the building of seven Flag Collection Boxes to be displayed within the local community. These boxes provide a venue for the Community to properly dispose of worn out American Flags, while also promoting the proper retirement of the American Flag.

Ryan remains active in the troop training the younger scouts and assisting the scout leaders. Ac-companying Compatriot Delaplaine at this special event were Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter 1st Vice President Gene Moyer and 2nd Vice President Ron Harbaugh.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Membership Committee

Ron Harbaugh

Chapter Registrar

The Membership Committee has a possible 10 prospective members in the pipeline at various stages of the application process. I have contact-ed several applicants who have started the online application; there have been no response from a few as of September 13, 2017. Several inquiries have come from State; I have contacted these in-dividuals. These are not posted on my list until there is a response. (Most of the applications waiting for action are lacking documentation for the first three generations.) Larry has submitted the Edward Spannus application to the State Reg-istrar. It was stated at the AMS annual confer-ence that the length of time for approval of new applications was going to be reduced to 6-8 weeks, and a quicker turn around for supplemen-tals, so be patient. The Membership Committee is a very important part of our Chapter because it is the path of our chapter’s growth and health. Currently, Larry and I are actively working on applications. If any of our able-bodied members would like to join the Membership Committee or help with research and gather material to help prospective members and guide them through the application process, please contact me at [email protected] or 301-898-7475.

FROM ANNAPOLIS TO ?

A STORY ABOUT THE FIRST STATE ROAD TO WHAT BECAME FREDERICK

The name Old Annapolis Road has been a ques-tion mark in the minds of many local people, es-pecially those living in the area northeast of Frederick City. Annapolis, the starting point was self-evident, but where it was to end was the puz-zling unknown.

By the early 18th century the British began to allow large numbers of German settlers into their North American colonies. Benjamin Franklin groused about the number of Germans pouring into Pennsylvania who weren’t like the folks from the British Isles. He worried whether they’d ever fit in.

Descendants of Pennsylvania’s founder William Penn encouraged the emigrants from the Palati-

nate, an area of the upper Rhine River near the Swiss Alps, hoping they would settle in the west-ern part of the state. The area to the west of South Mountain, called Cumberland Valley in Pennsyl-vania, Hagerstown Valley in Maryland and Shen-andoah Valley in Virginia reminded the newcom-ers of their Rhineland homes.

Early immigrants crossed the Susquehanna River and headed west and then south, going as far as the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. After 1732, a new roadway and river crossing led emigrants to make their trek to the east side of South Mountain and south into what is now Frederick County.

A majority of the newcomers were Protestants and settled in an area on the east side of the Monocacy River and to the north of Walkersville. The minor-ity Catholics located to the north near the Mason-Dixon Line.

It was during this period that the Germans, feeling left out of what was happening in the State of Maryland, appealed to the General Assembly in Annapolis to have a road constructed from the co-lonial capitol to their settlement. That wish was granted in 1739.

Most of the Protestants were Lutheran and had held services so frequently that they appealed to the church fathers to be considered a stable con-gregation. Thus the Evangelical Lutheran Church was born in 1740 near the Monocacy River.

The Annapolis Road was to end at a ford in the Monocacy River near Ceresville. It passed by the Beatty-Cramer House, the first part of which was built in 1732 by the Beatty family, now headed by the widow Susanna who became Frederick Coun-ty’s first female landowner, having bought 1,000 acres from Daniel Dulany, the Elder. The Dutch Colonial home is located on the north side of MD 26 near Israel’s Creek and a short distance east of the road to Walkersville.

About the time the German population along the Monocacy began growing Baltimore was begin-ning to take shape as a town. In 1706 it became a port for the tobacco trade, but not until 1729 was a serious move undertaken with the city being laid out at that time.

Frederick City was not too far behind with the lay-out for streets established in 1745. The first house was located at the northeast corner of East Patrick Street and Maxwell Avenue. Baltimore became

the point of attention and shortly thereafter the entire Protestant group moved to Frederick. This included the Evangelical Lutheran Church - orga-nized in 1740.

A toll road to Baltimore was quickly joined, and the Annapolis Road became “Old”. It was joined with the toll road to Libertytown at Mt. Pleasant and a little toll house sits near the Beatty-Cramer House along Rte. 26. Old Annapolis lost its name to Sidney Road and at that point the road to Mt. Airy was named Prospect Road with Jacobs Road going the other direction.

A section of the Old Annapolis exists in Howard County. At Pine Orchard, Rte. 144 and Rte. 40 are south of Interstate 70 and meet Centennial Lane that goes south to Centennial Park and Lake. About 2 miles from Rte. 144, Old Annapolis sur-faces and goes to the southeast toward Rte. 29. It is stopped by a cloverleaf where Rte. 108 goes under Rte. 29. On the southeast of the cloverleaf Rte. 108 picks up the Old Annapolis name and continues it for several miles.

Old Annapolis Road today is known for its transport of teenagers attending high school. In Frederick County we have Linganore High School, while in Howard County there is Howard High School. Frederick school planners may want to take a look at neighboring Howard because that building was erected in 1952 and has undergone additions. Linganore High was opened in 1962, and was totally replaced by the current building 7 years ago.

Other bits and pieces of Old Annapolis Road show up on maps around Laurel and Bowie in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties. In Frederick County a major change was made where the road crosses Linganore Creek. The old bridge was at the bottom of a hill and was de-stroyed by a vehicular accident. The new high bridge was built and opened on the 250th anniver-sary of the road in l989.

Long may it live.
