HWS is alive with thoughts, ideas, and actions. The board has decided to deliver 2–3 issues of the newsletter each year, the rest are available online and are being sent out via the Watercolor Wireless. Susan Phillips compiles the wireless from the emails and messages sent to her at [email protected]. Keep your messages coming; we want to hear from you! To increase our communication, member Colleen Sanchez is blogging about watercolor on our website. You can read it under that last tab on the upper right side of the site; no login is required to read or comment on the blog. Please check it out and leave a comment. Send your news or ideas about watercolor events to Colleen at: [email protected]. Lifetime Signature member Ruth Pistor, recently reminisced about going on paint outs with Hon Chew Hee, the founder of HWS. She said he loved to paint and wanted to instill a love of watercolor painting in those around him. To encourage his fellow painters, he would give the person with the “best painting of the day” a fresh sheet of watercolor paper. That tradition is the tradition upon which our Hawai`i Watercolor Society was founded in 1962. HWS has sponsored monthly paint outs for more than a year, with sparse attendance. Why are you not attending? Is it the day of the week? Is it because they move around and you can’t keep track of where it is? Do you already have a group with which you paint and don’t feel the need to join another? Please reply to [email protected]
Our Open Exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (Linekona) on September 23–October 19 is fast approaching. You can enter up to four paintings. Please enter at least one, actually, enter four! Chances of getting into any exhibit, and of winning an award, increase with every entry. Remember: “Luck is quite predictable. To have more luck, take more chances.“ ~Brian Tracey That’s what HWS members who participated in the Affordable Original Art exhibit at the ARTS at Marks Garage have learned! This year’s sales have tripled the sales of previous years! Read more about the cost/benefits of selling art inside the newsletter. Selling art is not something most people think about and is certainly not necessary to have a happy life. Painting, can feel like a necessary component of a joyful life, so do keep painting and expressing yourself. Then please share your art with the rest of us through our exhibits, our blog, and wireless posts! Paint on!

I began watercolor painting while a student at Punahou School and minored in art in college. After graduation, I gave up painting to raise four children, one of whom is also an artist. Volunteering at Punahou led to employment there as graphic designer for fifteen years. Many of my student staffers went on to careers in the art field. Retirement brought time to paint again. Determined to master watercolor (I love its transparency and glowing colors) I took a class at Linekona from Juanita Kenda – amazingly, also my art teacher as a freshman at Punahou! As a way to keep on painting, I organized the Windward Wanderers. We have met weekly to paint together “en plein aire” for 15 years. I have especially enjoyed being a part of the HWS Board. Participating in show planning and taking advantage of twice-yearly workshops has been an opportunity to learn much from other artists. Meg Stone gives a great critique and Roger Whitlock has been an inspirational and supportive teacher – thanks! And I’m working on that “mastering watercolor” for Signature status!
Inspiration awaits in the HWS DVD Library! Don Andrews’ video Making Watercolor Glow
along with six of Don’s Figure Painting dvds are now available! Enjoy and learn from the HWS Art Video Collection

Robert O’Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for forty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. Vermont, with its distinct four season climate, provides him with a wealth of subject matter and ever changing light effects. Robert is known for finding beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. In his own words, he is driven “to capture the vanishing landscape in my paintings” before they disappear forever as a result of the steady hand of “progress”. Since 1998 Robert O’Brien has traveled annually to Southern France. The region’s sun-splashed landscape and timeless quality of light has added a new dimension to Robert’s paintings. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with this award-winning artist. Be inspired by this master of light and color whose work has been featured in numerous publications including Watercolor Magazine, Splash 9, 10 and 11 Best of Watercolor, and l’Art de l’Aquarelle. See more of Robert’s work on his website. Visit www.robertjobrien.com.
