Diogenes, the Cynic, the Witty I I. II.... pher nf the Tub and Ijintern. Tho cynics, a urctof Greek phllcmophen, hold that n man should be Indifferent to dither pleasure or pain, good or evil for- tune. They reduced all their wants to the bare necessities of life, considering wealth and luxury the greatest of evils and a contented mind the only blessing. They received their namo from Cynosarges, a gymnasluiii at Athens, where Autlsthenes, the founder of the sect, delivered his dis- courses. The flrdt part of the word cyno Barges means a dog, and as Autlsthenes was of rough, snappish manners his fol- lowers came to bo called dogs, and Diog- enes, tho most celebrntod of them, appears to have been proud of the name. Diogenes was born about 41B B. C. After he became a philosopher he went about poorly clad, with a wallet in which he put any food that was given him, and carrying a rough stick in his hand. He slept wherever he could find shelter; but, discovering a large cask or tub, he made that his dwelling place. He was very pop- ular with tho Athenians of every rank, constantly making witty or sharp remarks to them. Many stories, accepted by some historians and ridiculed by others, are told of Diogenes. Ono bright sunshiny day he appeared In the streets carrying n lighted lantern and peering Into the face 01 every ono he met, and on being asked why he did so he replied that he was "looking for an hon- est man." Another titnfl be was eating his dinner In thu market place, when tho people sur- rounded him, calling out "Dog, dog!" "It is you who aro dogs," said he, "stand- ing around ma when I am at dinner." On being reproached afterward for eating there he replied, ' But it was in the mar- ket place that I was hungry." When aBked what advantuge ho derived from philosophy, he answered, "At least I am prepared for every kind of fortune." And when any one Inquired of what coun- try he was he used to say, "I am a cUlsen of tho world." A famous Interview between him and Alexander the Great Is said to have takon place at Corinth: "I am Alexander tho Great," said the king. '! am Diogendes the cynlo, " replied the phllosoper. "Can I oblige you in any way?" asked Alexander. "Yes. You can stand out of the sun- shine," answered Diogenes. This famous philosopher, whose history in some respects reads like that of a mod- ern tramp, was nearly BO years old when his death occurred on the samo day that Alexander tho Great died at Babylon. mmA FAMOUS MAN OF OLD.

Diogenes, the Cynic, the Witty I I. II....pher nf the Tub and Ijintern.

Tho cynics, a urctof Greek phllcmophen, hold that n man should be Indifferent todither pleasure or pain, good or evil for-

tune. They reduced all their wants to thebare necessities of life, considering wealthand luxury the greatest of evils and acontented mind the only blessing. They

received their namo from Cynosarges, agymnasluiii at Athens, where Autlsthenes, the founder of the sect, delivered his dis-courses. The flrdt part of the word cynoBarges means a dog, and as Autlstheneswas of rough, snappish manners his fol-lowers came to bo called dogs, and Diog-enes, tho most celebrntod of them, appearsto have been proud of the name.

Diogenes was born about 41B B. C.After he became a philosopher he wentabout poorly clad, with a wallet in whichhe put any food that was given him, andcarrying a rough stick in his hand. Heslept wherever he could find shelter; but, discovering a large cask or tub, he madethat his dwelling place. He was very pop-

ular with tho Athenians of every rank, constantly making witty or sharp remarksto them. Many stories, accepted by somehistorians and ridiculed by others, are toldof Diogenes.

Ono bright sunshiny day he appearedIn the streets carrying n lighted lanternand peering Into the face 01 every ono hemet, and on being asked why he did so hereplied that he was "looking for an hon-est man."

Another titnfl be was eating his dinnerIn thu market place, when tho people sur-rounded him, calling out "Dog, dog!""It is you who aro dogs," said he, "stand-ing around ma when I am at dinner."On being reproached afterward for eatingthere he replied, ' But it was in the mar-ket place that I was hungry."

When aBked what advantuge ho derivedfrom philosophy, he answered, "At leastI am prepared for every kind of fortune."And when any one Inquired of what coun-try he was he used to say, "I am a cUlsenof tho world."

A famous Interview between him andAlexander the Great Is said to have takonplace at Corinth:

"I am Alexander tho Great," said theking.'! am Diogendes the cynlo, " replied

the phllosoper."Can I oblige you in any way?" asked

Alexander."Yes. You can stand out of the sun-

shine," answered Diogenes. This famous philosopher, whose history

in some respects reads like that of a mod-ern tramp, was nearly BO years old whenhis death occurred on the samo day thatAlexander tho Great died at Babylon.

SOLID as O RAN ITS,

Uxcei.t in Isolated cases, theviews of those who smoothed thewrinkles from the forbidding front

of Hawaii s polity two years ago

are unchanged. There is no swerv-

ing from the annexation pathway. There is no halting on the journey. From President Dole to the hum-

blest of the faithful there is a grim

determination to fight it out on thelines established January 17193Nothing less than close political

union with the United States will

satisfy.Those were representative men

who spoke at the American Leaguehall last evening. Talkeis from all

classes gave voice. The testimonyoffered, the advice tendered, theviews expressed, made a clear andresistless composite verdict.

is more than a destiny. It is a refuge, a haven of safety.

And annexation has never been ex- -

actly the word. It is an alliancethat is to be accomplished, by

mutual consent and with mutualadvantage.

It is too had that such a largeaction of the citizenship here fails

Of refuses to realize the inevitable. Some of them are to be excused for

being perverse. Others shouldknow better. Let them conquerprejudice.

The arguments on behalf ol unionwith the Oreat Republic are mani- -

fold onethatisiirettv nlain and to- -

tent and simple is that in a countryso small as as this a fragment of adisaffected element is able to brewturmoil. Thi creates national un- -

rest and injures business. The;conditions would obtain in some of

the States of the American union, but for the restraining influence of,

the liberal and strong central gov- -

eminent.There are many serious local

problems. The leading men hereare doing the best they can withthem. If they had the assistanceand of the Great Re-

public these difficulties would dis- -

appear like snow before the sun.Hawaii is in a fair way of settlingthe labor question itself, but ishampered by causes that annex- -

ation would remove. Of thetariff" the same is true.

The open meeting last night wasia good one in every wav. Onefeature is perhaps not noticed very

.otten. This IS the disinterested- -

ness of the foremost workers. Thereare hundreds of men hereto whom exertion is a delightsimply for the good of thecountrv. That is patriotism. Thesemen deem it a pleasure to...pio- -

neers. And thetr cause is as in-

vincible as were Constantine's hostswhen bearing the Celestial portent on their standard.

Football certainly pays. Theprofits of the gameat Xew York were 834,2 1 8.

The condemnation of the Amer-

ican League by the conspiratorswas a fine compliment to thatorganization.

Can it be that there is a personalmotive in the Advertiser editor'ssuggestion that dancing be taughtat the Kamehameha Girls' School?Perish the thought.

Thk appropriation bill reportedto the house at Washington re-

duces the pension fund I io,ox,ooolielow the amount for the presentfiscal vear.

Commencing with Martin VanBureu, sixteen men have held theoffice of President of the UnitedStates since the beginning of (JueenVictoria's reign, and of these onlyBenjamin Harrison and GroverCleveland are alive today.

A decision has been filed in theMcOrew case by Judge Whiting.Attention is therein drawn to thefact that while a divorce had beengranted exceptions were taken tothe ruling and, therefore, the deci-sion could no be accountedabsolute until said exceptionshad been disposed of. Theruling, in the opinion of theCourt, cannot dispose of the ques-tion of Mrs. McOrew's rights asthe widow of the late Henri Mc-

Mr. Ash lord onened theday with the argument for defense. He began by reminding the Courtthat a committal should result fromevidence presented, and not fromevidence that might be presented.1 aking t le case of Weed the attorney denied that he should be heldupon an charge. With respect to Mr. Nawahi ithad been proved that defendentknew Yan Giesen and McEvoywere spies. Farther, that on theday the seditious language was al-

leged to have been used, Nawahiwas at home as had been clearlyproved. Mr. Ashford treated thecases of Bush and Crick in muchthe same manner. They knew thatthe two witnesses were spies. Theattorney dwelt upon what he calledthe improbabilities of the de-

fendants confiding in such men.The attorney for the defense

finished his argument a few min-utes before 12 o'clock. Jos. Tinker, charged with conspiracy, was thencalled in. The Attorney-Genera- l

stated that alter further investiga-tion it was decided to enter nolleprosequi in his case. This wasdone and Mr. Tinker was dis-

inhabitants of this country. Thiscaused the climax January 17.1803:

Mr. C. L. Carter's subject was"Matrimony" (between the UnitedStates ami Hawaii). Mr. Carteradvocated two kinds of politicalwork at the present time. Thefirst was "Americanizing Hawaii,"often referred to before, and thesecond " Hawaiianiing America.''We could not have too manyfriends in America. We havea number, but there arenianv millions vet unreached.

ur question here is made up of si

tnanv little details that it musteventually unite every elementmore solidly than ever before inHawaii.

Dr. J. F. McGrew was calledupon. He did not expect to speak.Dr. McGreW wished to express a

change of opinion with regard toone of the speakers. He referredto Senator Cecil Brown. Someyear- - ago he and Mr. Urown hadbad COntroyersieS. Since hearinghim at this time, however, he feltlike taking Mr. Brown's hand. TheRepublic of Hawaii was a goodone but he would like to swap itoff with Uncle Sam.

Senator McCandless made a fewremarks bearing upon the sametopic. This speaker confidently

'expected the glorious day. Hesaid the Britishers here were aclose second to the Americans forannexation. The Senator spoke ofthe tribute paid by the conspiratorsto the American League when theyexpressed fear of it.

Senator John N. Wright believedthat before Mr. Cleveland retiresfrom ofiice lie will stick a feather111 his cap. "Not to say that hehas done anything specially mean"said Mr. Wright, "buthe lias actedvery curiously." Mr. Wright spokein glowing terms of the opportumties in Hawaii for men who wouldanaertBWe cane, couce or iruu cutture.

Mr. Wright was folllowed byMr. Bretthani who spoke for aboutten minutes on the status of thequestion of annexation 111 the. , , , t, .... ,,uuiieq oiaies, witn personal onser-vatnms. Prom this he switched tothe subject of the large number ollaboring men now coming to tinscountry expecting to find employ-ment. The tide should be checked,as the work was not here. Mr.Hrctibain offered resolutions favor- -

ing the forwarding of stall. ineiilto the United States. The resolutions will be acted upon at the nextLeague meeting.

President Murray announced thatthere would be a sent s of opanLeague meetings during the sessionof the legislature.
