Who are the Hazara? The Hazara are a group of Shia Muslim people living in Afghanistan. They are a

minority compared to the Pashtuns. They are from the central mountains of Afghanistan and they are referred to as

the “outsiders” getting very little respect

Hazara’s Role in Society The Hazara used to be mainly nomads and

herders. They would herd animals such as horses, sheep and goat. They now work as farmers or at simple low paying jobs. At first this made them seem hardworking but shortly after it started causing conflict because people looked down on them. They are some of the poorest people in Pakistan and are despised by many other ethnic groups. The Hazara’s population has gone down progressively over the years because of all of the conflict in their lives.

The Conflict Between the Hazara and Pashtuns

Hazara Minority

Shia Muslim

Pashtun Majority

Sunni Muslim The longstanding conflict between the Hazara and Pashtun is mainly caused by their religious views. The Hazara who are Shia Muslim live in a mainly Sunni Muslim society therefore they are a minority. The Pashtun are the main ethnic group in Pakistan so they have all of the power and because the Hazara’s are just the minority the Pashtuns have pushed them into the lowest class and treated them badly. The Pashtuns refer to the Hazara as “outsiders” and have had genocides to try and take out the Hazara because they feel as if they are better and that the Hazara do not have a place in their society.

Hazara’s Main Religion Hazara are Shia Muslim which is exactly

the opposite of the Pashtun who are Sunni Muslim. Even though they do not like most of the normal practices they still pray 5 times a day to Mecca. Shia Muslims believe that Muhammad was the first Caliph rather than the other 3 that the Sunni’s believe were. Although this is mainly political it turned into religious also. They also believe that Imam is a saint who is sinless by nature and came directly from God. Religious conflict was the major point of arguing between the two ethnic groups

Hazara Lifestyle Clothes: Men wear knee length shirts

hanging over baggy pants, with embroidered skull caps and turbans. Woman generally wear the same thing except they use brightly colored shawls on their heads.

Education: They go to school for about 1 or 2 years, and only boys are able to go. This is why most Hazaras are unable to read or write. When they are at school they learn mainly about their religion and poetry, but it is not much of an education.

Hazara LifestyleMarriage: Most Hazara marry in their

own community because that is following common Islamic practices. Although many choose to marry within the Hazara ethnic group. Usually by age 15 a girls father chooses who she is to marry and it is usually one of her first cousins on her fathers side. This is the regular marriage pattern of most Hazara.

Hazara GenocideThousands of Hazara have been

killed in the genocides brought about by the Pashtun. They have killed thousands of Pashtun and it has lead to a severe decrease in the population of Hazara. They kill the Hazara because they do not believe in their religious practices. This has brought devastating loss to the Hazara and has put them in an even worse state then they already were.
