THE HEART

Page 2: The heart 2

THERE IS ONE MAIN FUNCTION OF THE HEART

IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR PUMPING BLOOD THROUGHOUT THE BODY WITHOUT IT WE WOULD NOT GET THE OXYGEN WE NEED TO SURVIVE

Page 3: The heart 2

LOCATION OF THE HEART

Left of the midline posterior to sternum in the mediastinum

Page 4: The heart 2

THE HEART CONSISTS OF FOUR CHAMBERS

Right atriumLeft atriumRight ventricleLeft ventricle

Page 5: The heart 2

Looks like a lot to learn.

RIGHT ATRIUM

The right atrium receives blood from the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava, this is deoxygenated blood The blood flows from there into the left ventricle through the tricuspid valve. Valves are important they keep blood from flowing back into the heart

Page 8: The heart 2

LEFT VENTRICLE

Blood in the left ventricle is still deoxygenated

Blood from the left ventricle is pushed out of the heart into the pulmonary artery where it is transported to the lungs

There is a valve between the pulmonary artery and the left ventricle-pulmonary valve

In the lungs oxygen is received into the blood

Page 9: The heart 2

Follow the arrows to see how blood flows through the heart.

RIGHT ATRIUM

After the blood has oxygen, it is returned to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the right atrium.

In right atrium blood is pushed into the right ventricle through the bicuspid valve.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE VALVES

RIGHT VENTRICLE

The right ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the right atrium

From here blood is pushed out to the body through the aorta.

LAYERS OF THE HEART

Epicardium: outermost layer of the heart

Myocardium: is the heart muscle

Endocardium: innermost layer made up of simple squamous epithelium

WHAT STRUCTURES CAN YOU IDENTIFY?

PUMPING)
