New Series in August: Wired

How many hours are you technologically connected on a normal day? If you were to add up your hours online, your glances at text messages, your stream-ing music, your perusing social media, your Netflix addiction, how many hours could you count? It’s probably a lot. Our culture is obsessed with tech-nology-and with good reason. Technology keeps us

connected to each other and to the world around us. Nearly every device we own transmits signals to something else, somewhere else. Why? Because that’s how they’re wired to function. Our phones, tablets, smart watches, gaming systems-are wired to connect to something outside them. And the same is true for us. We are wired for connection. It’s in our design. As we take a closer look at what Jesus called “the greatest commandment”, we discover that we are wired to have three vital relationships: with God, with ourselves, and with others. And when those connections are made, everything else begins to function as it was designed.

School Year Activities begin August 30!We will come back from summer vacation by kick-ing off our school year activities on August 30! This means we will be back with our Sunday morning small groups, Sunday night activities and MYF, and Breakfast Club on Thursday mornings.

Gilead DinnerIf you’ve been around at all this summer, you’ll know that our summer book has been Marilynne Robin-son’s Gilead, critically acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize win-ning, and beautifully spiritual. Members from across the congregation are LOVING this book! If you’ve read the book, the Cliff’s Notes, or just heard about it and want to hear more, you are invited to our Gilead discussion dinner on Thursday, August 27 at 6 pm. This meal will feature great food, great discussion, and quite possibly biscuits we can eat (just like John Ames and his father in the book). This night is going to be wonderful. The pastors will share their reflec-tions on the book, take questions, and invite your reflections

Please join us and bring your friends! RSVP to the Front Desk (884-2204) or Erin Beall by August 21 to reserve your seat! The meal is no cost, but donations are welcome.

Fall TeasersBehind the Scenes of WorshipDo you know the meaning behind the procession of the cross? What about the number of sides on the baptismal font and what the number means? Our Christian tradition has given us a wealth of amaz-ing symbols and practices that we see and do every Sunday. Yet, few of us know what they really mean!

This fall, we will explore some of those “behind the scenes” facts and reflect on how they enrich and engage our worship. Contemporary and traditional worshippers are all welcome! More details forth-coming. Mark your calendars for the afternoon of November 8!

“The Desert Religions: An Exploration of Islam, Judaism and Christianity”If there’s one topic some Christians are worried but unsure how to learn more about, it’s Islam. How does Christ want us to interact with our Muslim neigh-bors, co-workers, and students? What do they be-lieve? Should we be frightened, upset, or angry? And what about the other religion birthed in that same region, Judaism? How ought we to interact with our Jewish sisters and brothers? What do they believe? The Desert Religions, taught by Rev. Erin BeallWednesday nights at 6:30 (after Wednesday night supper) Circle View Room (3rd floor, Administrative

Building)RSVP: Reserve your spot in the class by calling or emailing Erin Beall. This class requires no book.

Mickey EfirdWe look forward to seeing friend of Wesley Memo-rial, Dr. Mickey Efird again this fall to share with us a New Testament book study. Mark your calendars for Monday nights at 6:45 pm from September 21-Oc-tober 12 in the Dining Hall.

Women of Welsey: Now on a New Day!All Women of Wesley (WOW) are invited to come Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am beginning September 22 for 9 weeks of Bible Study and fellow-ship. We will be doing an in depth study of I and II Thessalonians based on Beth Moore's book Children of the Day. The book costs $16 and will be in soon. If you have questions call Susan Meisky (259-5402) or Barbara Coughlin (884-1335).

The deadline for article submission for the September issue of the

HeartBeat will be August 13. To submit information for the HeartBeat contact:

Music Notes... 5

Music Ministries at Wesley Memorial have hardly slowed down this summer. The Chancel Choir is rehearsing all summer but it is not all work and no play. On July 19, twenty-eight of the Chancel Choir and some of their spouses held their first Feast and Fellowship night at Sammy G’s in High Point; on July 22 they held their second annual ice cream sundae night after rehearsal. Rehearsals will continue in August with the exception of Au-gust 19. On August 26 they will have a covered dish in the fellowship hall to welcome back all Choral Scholars and choir members returning from summer absences.

Looking ahead to September, the Chancel Choir will hold a choir retreat followed by a light lunch on September 19 from 9:30-1 pm, to begin preparing music for special Sundays and Christmas. We have ten Choral Scholars so far for 2015-2016.We are grateful for the donations which enable us to have a scholar or group of scholars sing for the Cha-pel Service every Sunday starting in September. We will be welcoming eight returning scholars and two new ones this year: Teresa Bonavita, Michaela Kelly, Emily Frye, Elizabeth Church, Taylor Boone, Jesse Herndon, Jacob Cortes, Scott Lee, Brittany Griffin, and Wesley McCleary-Small respectively. Looking ahead to the fall, Children’s Music for 2-5 grades will have four “sessions” beginning Septem-ber 20. They will rehearse for four Sundays in the Children’s Gathering Space from 9:30-9:45 am and sing at 11 o’clock on the fourth Sunday of the ses-sion. For a detailed schedule contact Anne Carroll. Youth Handbells did an outstanding job last year. We have added a ringer so we will have 9 ringers next year. They will have their first rehearsal from 5-6 pm on Sunday, September 27. Any youth inter-ested in ringing should contact Anne Carroll. Adult Handbells will rehearse August 13 to prepare music for the Raleigh Ringers workshop on Novem-ber 6 and 7. Their first regular rehearsal in the fall will be Thursday, September 10, from 7-8:15 pm. Note the change in rehearsal time. The Wesley Handbell Choir is the beginning handbell choir for 3-5 graders. The first rehearsal is

Wednesday, September 9 from 4:15-5:00 pm. Keep watching the HeartBeat and the bulletin wrap for information about a Women’s Choir and Men’s Choir for fall. If you would like more information or a detailed schedule for any of the above choirs contact Anne Carroll. Anthem Angels “purchase” anthems in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one. Each time the choir sings your anthem a note is placed in the Sun-day bulletin. Interested donors may choose from a list compiled by the Director of Music Ministries. If you would like to be an Anthem Angel contact Anne Carroll.

Missions and Community Impact...Jail MinistryJesus said that when we visit the inmates in our jails and prisons, we have visited him (Matthew 25:34-40). The Disciple Bible Outreach Ministry (DBOM) has been taking the Disciple Bible Study into the jails, prisons, and youth development centers of our state for 16 years. DBOM has trained and deployed hun-dreds of volunteers for ministry with the imprisoned. This ministry has been supported by churches like Wesley Memorial from across our Conference. The Conference has designated August 23 as Disciple Bible Outreach Ministry Sunday and authorized a special offering. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to be the hands and voice of Christ to those in need.

How Does Our (Community) Garden Grow? Thus far the 10 garden beds at Wesley Memorial have produced 220 pounds of zucchinis, cucumbers, eggplants, green beans and squash – mainly squash. The tomatoes, okra, corn and cantaloupes are just about ready to come in. We have donated this food to Open Door for use at Our Father’s Table. The gar-deners are already talking about a “second planting” and a fall planting.

Disaster Response VolunteersSeveral United Methodist churches in High Point are trying to put together teams of volunteers who might be “on call” to help when a disaster strikes. These volunteers would go into disaster zones several weeks or even months after a disaster to help the victims clean-up and re-build. If you would be interested in knowing more about what might be involved in being a disaster response volunteer, please contact Al Ward ([email protected], 336-812-4808).

Caring for ChildrenA great big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped with the summer supplemental feeding program at Fairview Elementary School!! In addition to back-packs, Wesley Memorial provided 300 lunches for the children at Fairview during the weeks that the cafeteria was closed. We also received monetary donations in support of this endeavor.

When schools resumes, Wesley Memorial will con-tinue piggy-backing with the United Way to provide “backpacks” of food for Fairview students on the weekend and holidays. Wesley Memorial’s back-packs go home with students on teacher workdays, holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter), and snow days. You may bring any of the following items to the collection bids located around our buildings: Individual Pop-top Spaghettio’s, Chef Boyardee Spaghetti and Meatballs, Ramon Noodles, Kraft Mac and Cheese easy cups.

Please consider volunteering as a tutor, mentor, or breakfast buddy for the students at Fairview. If you are interested in volunteering in one of these capac-ities, please contact Catherine Niebauer.

Duke Reimagining Health Initiative – Recap Last month, four members of Wesley Memorial joined Jared Stine to learn more about the relation-ship between health, wellness, theology, and medi-cine at a conference held by Duke Divinity School. Brenda Bradner, Keelah Voll, and Barbara & Paul Coughlin discussed topics such as Sabbath, hospice, partnering with clinicians, nutrition, disability, and mental health. The team was inspired by dialogues with professors from Duke Divinity, Duke Medical School, and faculty at Duke Hospital. Duke’s Initia-tive on Theology, Medicine, and Culture invited Wesley Memorial to participate in a on-going col-laborative effort focused on these themes as they relate to church and community life. As they begin to discern the need for future projects and minis-tries in our church and city, keep this team and all our congregational care ministries in your prayers.

HIGH POINT, NC, July 9, 2015, from HPU website – High Point University senior Thomas Lyons is spending this summer and upcoming academic year discerning a call to become an ordained deacon during a full-time minis-try internship with the United Methodist Church.

Lyons, a music performance major from Pompton Plains, New Jersey, is serving alongside church leaders at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church starting this sum-mer. The year-long internship is made possible by a grant from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church to help young adults explore their calling to ministry.

The internship will immerse Lyons in various aspects of local ministry, including leading prayer and other parts of worship services, attending church leadership plan-ning with pastors and visiting with those who are sick or in the hospital. He will also plan and lead a new ministry opportunity at Wesley Memorial.

Lyons says the experience will help him understand where his call to ministry will lead after graduation from HPU. He plans to continue his education in seminary and looks to become an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church. He also says he would like to serve others using the skills he’s developed as a music major at HPU, possibly leading a civic choir or teaching music to children.

“Coming to the university has helped me grow spiritually as the person I am through music and religion,” he says. “Those two fields are my passion, and when I combine the two of them, I know I’m on the right path.”

Although his internship started recently, it is already making an impact on him. He attended the annual meeting of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church at Lake Junaluska in June, where he met with alumni and friends of HPU. He is also actively involved in services at Wesley Memorial and shared a special experience he had after leading a prayer.

“After the service ended, a member approached me and asked for a copy of my prayer. The next morning, I received an email from her explaining that the prayer helped her express her heart’s desire to stay strong in her faith. She went on to say the words I had used stirred up an awakening in her – something she had been wait-ing to hear,” Lyons says. “I was glad to provide that to her and feel blessed that I will get to share with many others over the course of this year.”
