TRANSCRIPT
It had been four years since rider Luke
Dittman had scored the only Group win of
his career, but yesterday he trebled his haul
in one afternoon by taking both the Premiers
Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) on Another Dollar (Ocean Park)
and the Sapphire Stakes (Gr 3, 1630m) on Sure
Knee (Snitzel), both for trainer Chris Waller.
Dittman, the 28-year-old son of Hall of Fame
rider Mick, had scored his only Group win in
2016, taking the Ken Russell Memorial Classic
(Gr 3, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on Royal Tithe
(Show A Heart).
However, he celebrated a newfound
partnership with Waller - which began at Gold
Coast trackwork yesterday morning - by riding a
Group 3 double for the leading trainer.
“It was a great day, probably one of my best
in the saddle,” Dittman told Andrew Bensley
post-race. “To get a double with a couple of
Group winners, I can’t be any happier. Today
was my first day riding work for Chris Waller,
actually, so hopefully it earns me a spot on the
roster there and I can just keep punching home
winners. That’s the plan anyway, hopefully I can
give something back to Chris for the trust he’s
shown me. Continued on page 2>>

“I’ve had a little bit of luck for him in
the last month or so, so that’s helped. Obviously, he’s got a good team and
he’s a great trainer. I can’t ask for more from him and just to be able to do
my end of the job and get them home, it’s what I’m striving to do.”
Another Dollar (5 m Ocean Park - Make A Wish by Pins), who is set
to go through the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale next month,
added a first Group 3 win to her record and a second stakes win this
preparation in the Premiers Cup.
The Mystery Downs-owned five-year-old also brought up just her
second win at Doomben from nine attempts, but her previous runs at
the tight Brisbane track included seconds in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1,
2200m), the Doomben Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) and the Gold Coast Bracelet
(Listed, 1630m), as well as a third in the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3,
2000m).
“You can’t knock her,” Dittman said. “Her last run probably wasn’t her
best but she’s bounced back and she’s come back better than ever. She’s
turned into a Doomben specialist. I know the last one who was a specialist
here was a bloody good horse, she’s just got a bit more distance on him.”
Settling handy one off the fence under Dittman, she came under a ride
as Jag Guthmann-Chester on the Michael Costa-trained La Pulga (Dream
Ahead) searched for a run near the inside.
Switched back to the inside, La Pulga raced a length clear of the
pursuing brigade, but Another Dollar knuckled down to get up in the
shadows of the post, the long neck margin belying how tight it was towards
the finish.
Another Dollar’s stablemate Alward (Aqlaam) was a further length
and a quarter away in third; in fact, Waller had five of the first six across
the line.
“I knew she always was one of the better horses in the race and I got
a lovely run from the get-go, one out and one back,” Dittman said. “In the
back of my mind, the horse to beat was La Pulga back on my inside. I was
just hoping that I could hold him in enough to get out in good time. He got
through on the fence and kicked.
“When I gave my mare a dig, she was just a bit flat-footed for a couple of
strides, but I was lucky enough to run him down.”
Waller’s Queensland manager Paul Shailer was full of praise for the
winning rider.
"That was a very good ride on a horse which can be tricky. He is a very
good jockey and you can say he will be getting a lot more rides in the city
for us in coming months," Shailer said. "She doesn't win out of turn this
mare. I actually told her owner she was probably up against it today, but
she goes home to Sydney with a Group 3 to her name."
The trainer has now won all 18 of the major staying feature races in
Queensland with the Premiers Cup the only one not in his cabinet before
yesterday.
Bred by Waikato Stud, Another Dollar was purchased from the
Waikato draft at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Waller
for $190,000.
She is out of the two-time winner Make A Wish (Pins), who herself
is out of the Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Starcent (Centaine).
Further back, this is the family of Group 1 winners Vanbrugh (Encosta
De Lago), Sacred Star (Flying Spur), Diademe (Savabeel) and Embellish
(Savabeel).
Since visiting Ocean Park (Thorn Park) in 2013, producing Another
Dollar, Make A Wish has visited Savabeel (Zabeel) six times: four-year-old
Any Wish races in the same Mystery Downs colours and won twice in NSW
earlier this year, while two-year-old No Limits is unraced but trialled for Te
Akau Racing last Tuesday. She also has a yearling colt by Savabeel, while
she is back in foal to the Waikato Stud stalwart.

Sunlight (Zoustar) and Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) as well as Friday’s Gold
Coast winner Vincere Volare (I Am Invincible).
Sure as Sapphire for WallerOne mare who will not be offered for sale is Sapphire Stakes winner
Sure Knee, who races in the famous Ingham cerise colours and is set to
join their broodmare band at the end of her career.
Sure Knee (4 m Snitzel - Shawnee Girl by Encosta De Lago) scored a first
stakes win yesterday, dashing home to defeat the Magic Millions-bound Krone
(Eurozone) by a length with a head back to Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince) in third.
“She got back in the field and I got a fortunate run in behind Krone,”
Dittman said. “When they sprinted, they just left her a bit flat-footed and I
thought, ‘Gee, I’ve got a bit of ground to make up.’ When I got her out in clear
room and I let her go, she quickened nicely. She was just too good for them at
the finish which was a blessing for me.”
Shailer said that the primary reason for sending Sure Knee to
Queensland was in search of black type.
"Like everyone at this time of the year Chris was looking for black type
for her. He is a master at finding the right races for these mares," he said.
It was a reunion of sorts for Dittman, who sported the cerise colours
early in his career, shortly before the Ingham family sold the majority of
their racing assets to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Maktoum and his
Darley operation.
“Early days, when they had a stable in Brisbane, I was only about 16
years old, I had a bit of luck with them,” he said. “I had a couple of winners
for them, they were kind enough to give me a couple of really good rides,
so it was great to wear the cerise silks again.”
Sure Knee, a homebred for the Inghams, is out of Shawnee Girl (Encosta
De Lago), a four-time winner in the cerise as well as third in the Magic Night
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) to Indian Ocean (Danehill Dancer) in 2009.
She is the third foal out of Shawnee Girl, joining the Group 1-placed
Oklahoma Girl (Fastnet Rock) and maiden Milanese Girl (Snitzel).
Shawnee Girl has a yearling Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colt, a weanling
American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) filly and is in foal to The Autumn
Sun (Redoute’s Choice).
Sure Knee’s third dam Explosive (Fappiano) is one of the stalwart
Gooree Park mares, having produced Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago),
Queen Of The Hill (Danehill) and Rabbuka (Giant’s Causeway), as well as
Comical Smile (Comic Strip), the dam of Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock).
Further back, it is the family of a host of top-liners, ranging from last
week’s dominant Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) winner Lord North
(Dubawi) to the incomparable Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer).
Frankel filly Awesome in McKellWhile Waller dominated in Brisbane, he came up empty handed in
the features at his home track of Rosehill.
The W J McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) is one of the few Sydney features
to elude the Kiwi trainer and, while Waller trainees finished third, fourth
and fifth, they could not hold out the Kris Lees-trained pair of Frankely
Awesome (Frankel) and Sixties Groove (Sixties Icon).
Frankely Awesome, placed in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
and the ATC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) behind Verry Elleegant (Zed) last year,
had struggled for form this preparation as she returned from an injury-
enforced break.
However, her last run - a closing sixth over 1800 metres behind
stablemate Attention Run (Hurricane Run) - set her up perfectly for her
fourth run back from a spell.

Settling midfield under Jason Collett,
Frankely Awesome travelled strongly throughout and was tracking up
strongly on the turn, so much so that it was just a matter of Collett finding
room. That came at the 350 metres when he switched out off the heels of
Carzoff (Zoffany) and, while it took her a fair bit of time to wind up, she
was full of running late to win by three-quarters of a length.
Sixties Groove just arrived in the last stride to grab second, snatching
the runner-up position from Carzoff in third.
Lees said that it had been a labour of love to get the Cressfield-owned
Frankely Awesome back into the winners’ circle, with the four-year-old a
potential Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) runner next month.
"She looked like being a really handy three-year-old and she went
amiss in the Oaks," Lees said. "It has taken a while to get her back to this
grade. I started to question just where she was at when we got her back in
work, but the team has done a really good job at home and I think she is
really appreciating the soft ground during the winter."
Frankely Awesome is the 54th stakes winner for the legendary Frankel
(Galileo), but just the fourth in Australia, joining Miss Fabulass, Hungry
Heart and Finche. He has had only 28 foals born in Australia.
She is out of the American stakes winner Street Secret (Street Cry), who
was purchased at the 2013 Fasig Tipton Fall Mixed Sale for US$535,000 by
James Bester on behalf of Cressfield’s Bruce Neill. She was then sold to
Paul Moroney Bloodstock for $680,000 at the 2017 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
“Bruce Neill purchased the mare and got her into foal to Frankel to
southern hemisphere time," Lees said. "He wasn't able to get her to a sale
so it's very pleasing to win a stakes race with her."
Frankely Awesome is bred on a 4 X 4 cross of her fourth dam Allegretta
(Lombard), who herself is the dam of the world’s most influential blue hen
of the modern era in Urban Sea (Miswaki).
Street Secret has produced two foals by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) -
two-time winner Secretly Awesome and unraced two-year-old Maternal
Gift. She is currently back in foal to Snitzel.

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)
took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money
of $1,879,285.

Six for Rich EnuffWoodside Park Stud stallion Rich Enuff (Written
Tycoon) equalled the first-season haul of his sire
yesterday when Queen Sweeper (2 f ex Zilzie by
Generous) became his sixth individual winner. Bred
and raced by the late Ross Cutts under his Showtime
Breeding operation, Queen Sweeper brought strong
form into the 1110-metre handicap at Doomben
and finished off powerfully to defeat Real Fine
Wine (Real Saga) by three-quarters of a length with
One Shy Ruby (Rubick) a further long head away in
third. Winning trainer Stuart Kendrick believes that
the homebred, out of the prominent Cutts-owned
producer Zilzie (Generous), can still develop further.
"Queen Sweeper had taken time to mature but is
getting better with racing. At her previous start she
knocked up near the line but she was fitter today,"
Kendrick said. Rich Enuff will stand for $8,800 at
Woodside Park this season.
103 for SnitzelArrowfield Stud’s Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice)
registered his 103rd individual stakes winner
yesterday when Sure Knee (4 m ex Shawnee Girl
by Encosta De Lago) took out the Sapphire Stakes
(Gr 3, 1630m) at Doomben. Snitzel, who is in
contention for his fourth consecutive Australian
Champion Sire title this season, will stand for
$165,000 (inc GST) in the upcoming season.
173 for Exceed And ExcelExceed And Excel (Danehill) brought up his
173rd individual stakes winner when Inquiry
(5 g ex Screen by Lonhro) took out the Spear
Chief Handicap (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben
yesterday. Inquiry, who led by a huge margin
mid-race under Ryan Wiggins, held off
Scallopini (Snitzel) by a length and a quarter
with a further length and a half back to Right
Or Wrong (Manhattan Rain) in third. Inquiry is
out of Group 3 winner Screen (Lonhro), tracing
from a family that includes Group 1 winners
Dracula (Quest For Fame), Complacent
(Authorized) and Sentimental Miss (Reliable
Man). Exceed And Excel will stand at Darley’s
Kelvinside farm for $132,000 (inc GST) this year.
From bush to black type for Inquiry
Former Godolphin galloper Inquiry, who began
his career in a Listed race at Flemington in 2016,
looked to be destined for life on the tracks of
central and north Queensland after he found his
way to the Rockhampton stables of Jared Wehlow
earlier this year. However, after dominating at
Mackay, Townsville and Rockhampton, he found
his way back to the city, winning the Spear Chief
Handicap for trainer John Smerdon yesterday.
Inquiry’s visit to Brisbane will be short-lived,
though. "He will be on a float back to Jared so
he can contest races like the Rockhampton
Newmarket," Smerdon said.
54 for FrankelThe legendary Frankel (Galileo) recorded his 54th
individual stakes winner and his fourth in Australia
when Frankely Awesome (4 m ex Street Secret by
Street Cry) took out yesterday’s W J McKell Cup
(Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill. Frankel stood his eighth
season at Banstead Manor Stud at Newmarket this
season at a fee of £175,000 (AUS$314,500 approx).
47 for Darci BrahmaReliable Kiwi stallion Darci Brahma (Danehill)
made it 47 individual stakes winners when
Trumbull (4 g ex Pride And Passion by Encosta De
Lago) broke through for a first stakes win in the
Civic Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Rosehill yesterday.
The Kim Waugh-trained Trumbull defeated
the Chris Waller pair Order Again (Iffraaj) and
Dealmaker (Dundeel), with a length separating
the first two and a head back to third. Trumbull
is a three-quarter brother to Group 2 winner Hard
Merchandize (Burgundy), while second dam
Calaway Gal (Clang) scored her greatest career
triumph at Rosehill in the 2002 Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Darci Brahma will stand at
The Oaks Stud for NZ$15,000 (plus GST) in 2020.
Overdue win for Trumbull in Civic StakesThe Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Grafton
could be on Trumbull’s agenda after he scored a
first stakes win in the Civic Stakes. Trumbull entered
in good form, but had struggled to win due to bad
luck and a habit for missing the break that forced
him into a get-back racing style. "Finally. We have
had such a frustrating run with him this whole
preparation, he has just developed this silly habit,"
trainer Kim Waugh said. "We've given him a bit
of barrier practice at home. I just said to Tommy
(Berry, jockey), hold his tail up like we did last week
and give him a big kick in the belly, let him know
you mean business. He's done my head in the last
six weeks but it's a big thrill when you put so much
work into them and everything keeps going wrong
but you finally get a result for the owners."

Material Man lands second Strickland StakesMaterial Man (8 g Vital Equine - Del Lirio by
Hussonet) wound back the clock with a second
win in the Strickland Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at
Belmont yesterday. Material Man won the
Strickland Stakes in 2018 as a $1.50 favourite,
one of four stakes wins that calendar year that
also included the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m), the
Belmont Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) and the Hyperion
Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), as well as placings in the
Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Kingston
Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m). However, after
shipping east, the eight-year-old looked to have
lost all form and entered off a 10-length 11th in
this year’s Hyperion Stakes. Returning to the care
of Justin Warwick and sent out at $15, Material
Man defeated Perfect Jewel (Redoute’s Choice) by
a length and three-quarters with The Velvet King
(Universal Ruler) a short half-head away in third.
Humidor’s career up in the airThe Strickland Stakes may have brought the
curtain down on the career of three-time Group
1 winner Humidor (Teofilo), who finished three
and a half lengths away from Material Man in
fifth but was nearest at the wire. Humidor, best
known for finishing second to Winx (Street Cry)
in her third Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and third
to the great mare in her historic fourth win in
Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, has
endured an injury-chequered career and trainer
Lindsey Smith indicated pre-race that retirement
may beckon if he couldn’t finish in the top three.
Sweet Thomas superior in Stayers CupKerrin McEvoy has an impeccable record in
two-mile races and his experience proved
decisive when $11 chance Sweet Thomas
(Dylan Thomas) took out the Stayers' Cup
(3200m) at Rosehill. McEvoy said he enjoyed the
challenge of distance races and found himself
on the right horse at Rosehill. "I do like riding
in them. I was obviously lucky to have a nice
horse beneath me with good two-mile form,"
McEvoy said. "They went a nice even tempo for
me and I was able to park him away, get that
part of the race right, and then worry about the
second half from the 1000 onwards. We cut the
corner and he was full of running when I asked
him." Sweet Thomas crossed the line two and
a quarter lengths ahead of Loveseat (Savabeel)
with another head back to Re Edit (Camelot).
McDonald raises the batJames McDonald became the first jockey
in more than a decade to ride a century of
Sydney winners in successive seasons when
he completed a treble at Rosehill yesterday.
McDonald reached the milestone when scoring
aboard Kordia (Epaulette) in the final race on
the card, having earlier been successful on both
Rothenburg (Rothesay) and Roheryn (Lonhro).
McDonald also extended his premiership lead
over Nash Rawiller to more than 20 and looks
to have back-to-back championship titles
in the bag despite an upcoming three-week
suspension. The last jockey to rack up 100
metropolitan winners in consecutive seasons
was Hall of Famer Darren Beadman.
Diamond a tonic for WorthingtonA Rosehill victory by Steel Diamond (Star
Witness) provided the perfect tonic for trainer
Rick Worthington, who is battling a serious health
issue. The renowned horseman has recently been
released from hospital and could not be on track
but stable representative Dean Mitchell said
Worthington would have got satisfaction from
Steel Diamond's win in the opener. "He will be
very pleased with that. It was a super win and it
was good to see her do what we know she can do,"
Mitchell said. A sister to stakes winner Graff, Steel
Diamond beat Academy (Shamus Award) by
half a length with another two and three-quarter
lengths back to Cafe Royal (Snitzel) in third.
Mirimar lands double for MoroneyA course of dressage helped Mirimar (Kalanisi) get
back to winning ways as he took out yesterday’s
Neds Money Back Handicap (2000m) to provide
trainer Mike Moroney with a double at Caulfield
following the earlier victory of She's A Thief
(Showcasing). Starting a campaign in February,
Mirimar raced through the autumn registering a
2400-metre victory at Caulfield and was then given
a break after finishing second behind Too Close
The Sun (Carlton House) in the Warrnambool
Cup (Listed, 2350m) on May 6. "The idea from
Mike was to give him a freshen-up to try and get
him to the doorsteps of spring,” assistant trainer
Jack Turnbull said. "He's consistent and once he
races over 2000 (metres) and beyond he's quite a
talented animal." Mirimar beat Sircconi (Nicconi)
by a long neck win with Salsamor (Tavistock) a
further two and a quarter lengths away in third.
Rodd scores Caulfield win with Mystery ShotMystery Shot (Shooting To Win) continued
an unbeaten start to his career as he provided
Michael Rodd with his first city success since
returning to Victorian racing from Singapore.
The Lindsey Smith-trained three-year-old made
it three wins from as many starts when landing
yesterday’s Take It To The Neds Level Handicap
(1440m) at Caulfield. Closer Splendoronthegrass
(So You Think) finished a long neck behind in
second with Scorpius (Deep Field) a further
length and three-quarters away in third. Rodd,
who has been based in Singapore since 2015, was
one of three Australian jockeys who returned to
Victoria to continue riding after racing was shut
down for a period in Singapore as a result of the
Covid-19 pandemic. "It's great to finally get one,"
Rodd said. "It's just taken a bit of time to get on
a better quality horse. Lindsey and (syndicator)
Brad Spicer have been really good to me. They've
been great supporters and this horse has been
going well."
Saltpeter salutes for OliverA drop in distance proved to be no hindrance
for Saltpeter (Pierro) after the John Moloney-
trained two-year-old posted his first city win in
yesterday's Vale Graham Salisbury Handicap
(1100m) at Caulfield. Ridden by Damien Oliver,
Saltpeter scored by a long head from Clean
Machine (Brazen Beau) with Savannah Cloud
(Savabeel) another three-quarters of a length
back in third. Oliver described Saltpeter as a
"little ripper" and a foolproof little racehorse.
"He was professional at Geelong and we were
looking at a mid-week race but we put him in
this race because he's improved so much,"
Oliver said. "He puts himself in the race, travels
well and gives you everything he's got. I'm sure
he can skirt around the fringes in the spring and
there'd be a nice race for him."

Fairytale continues for Alfa OroThe fairytale return of Alfa Oro (Bachelor Duke)
continued apace at Caulfield yesterday when
the promising gelding took another step up to
win for the fourth time in a row. Serious injury
kept Alfa Oro off the track for almost two years
before the Matt Laurie-trained four-year-old
returned with a second at Pakenham in April,
and then embarked on his winning sequence at
the same track two weeks later. He scored his
first city win at Flemington last start and added
another with an even more impressive victory
in yesterday’s Neds Handicap (1100m). "I'm
a bit short of words, to be honest, because it's
been a long process," Laurie said. "I thought we
had a smart one very early on, and to see this
happening it's a good result. He's a very lovable
horse. There's been a lot of people involved
in getting this horse back." Alfa Oro defeated
Sansom (Charm Spirit) by two and a quarter
lengths with Ruban Bleu (Artie Schiller) a
further neck away in third.
Lucifer’s Reward firesA third run in as many weeks could not stop
Lucifer's Reward (Reward For Effort) who
circled the field under Michael Poy to record
a tough win in yesterday’s Neds Same Race
Multi Handicap (1000m) at Caulfield. Relishing
the hot speed, the Brendan McCarthy-trained
gelding beat Proper Rogue (Snitzel) by a length
and three quarters with Elderflower (Toronado)
another three-quarters of a length away third.
"I was really happy to back-up after last week's
race," McCarthy said. "Last week he loomed
into the race against a good field but his run
just petered out. I thought we're going to crack
one eventually so there was every reason to go
around here. I'd hoped he would have been
handier in the run but I also told him (Poy) not
to bustle into the race. He actually had to take
another hold of the horse when it started to take
off mid-race."
NEW ZEALAND
Racing returns to South Island with Yannick winLocally-trained Yannick (Burgundy) took out
the opening event, a 1400-metre maiden, at
Riccarton yesterday as racing returned to the
South Island for the first time since the easing
of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. The Jamie
Bullard-trained three-year-old surged over the
top of favourite Matuki (Pins) in the last few
strides under Chris Johnson to give Yannick
a first win at start seven. “He’s been a difficult
horse as he struggles to settle in his races so
it was good to see him finally do that today,”
Bullard said. “He’s quite a lean type with a big
stride but he over-races a lot which has been
the undoing of him. We changed a bit of gear
around and Chris got him to settle which was
the key to the performance.”
Race-to-race doublefor PitmansThe leading South Island training combination
of Michael and Matthew Pitman made the best
possible start to their day yesterday when they
produced a race-to-race double early on the
card on their home turf at Riccarton. Showgem
(Showcasing) showed plenty of speed on debut
to lead throughout over 800 metres before
Impecunious (Sacred Falls) stormed away
from her rivals over the concluding stages of a
1000-metre contest. “I’ve said all along that these
are high-class fillies and I think they showed that
today,” Michael Pitman said. “I told Mark Chittick
at the yearling sales eighteen months ago that
I thought I had bought the best Sacred Falls in
the country and on what she showed today I still
believe that. We also think so much of Showgem
that we recently purchased her half-brother by
Belardo for the owner of Impecunious. And as for
Impecunious, I think she’s the best horse in our
stable since Savvy Coup.”
Nine-year-old to the foreRising ten-year-old Irish Excuse (No Excuse
Needed) peeled back the years as he gave his
rivals weight and a beating to land his 16th career
victory when taking out a rating 93 1200-metre
contest at Riccarton yesterday. Punters had
expected the Ellis Winsloe-trained gelding to
need his first-up run but he belied their lack of
confidence with a dashing display that saw him
haul in the Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained
Whale Song (Ocean Park) in the closing stages
to nail a thrilling victory. “He’s a very good horse
with the record to prove it but I was a little worried
after I arrived at the course,” Winsloe said. “There
weren’t enough stalls available so he and my
other horse Nomen Ludi had to stand on the float
for an hour or more so I didn’t know if that would
prove his downfall as he sweated up a bit. Luckily,
he’s been around and it didn’t really worry him so
he was okay but it’s not a situation that you would
like to see repeated.”

First for VancouverGolden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) produced his
first stakes winner as a stallion yesterday
when Mount Pleasant (2 c ex Life In A Metro
by Fastnet Rock) took out the South African
Nursery (Gr 2, 1160m) at Turffontein. The Mike
De Kock-trained Mount Pleasant defeated
Najem Suhail (Starspangledbanner) by a length
in a one-two for Australian-breds, with another
three and a quarter lengths back to Nourbese
(Futura) in third. Purchased for $90,000 at last
year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Mount
Pleasant is by Life In A Metro (Fastnet Rock),
a half-sister to Group 1 winners Abbey Marie
(Redoute’s Choice) and Absolutely (Redoute’s
Choice) as well as the Group 1-placed Runaway
(Manhattan Rain). Also in the family are
Japanese stallion Kinshasa No Kiseki (Fuji
Kiseki) and this season’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1,
1600m) winner Nettoyer (Sebring). Vancouver
will stand for $30,250 (inc GST) at Coolmore
Stud this year.
Two for Vadamos Rich Hill Stud’s shuttle stallion Vadamos
(Monsun) registered his second winner
yesterday when Eilean Dubh (2 c ex Kenwana by
Kendargent) won a 1400-metre maiden at Dax
in France yesterday. Eilean Dubh, who finished
a well-beaten eighth on debut at Bordeaux le
Bouscat, defeated Boujoc (Hunter’s Light) by
a length and three-quarters, with another half-
length back to Normandy Beech (Le Havre) in
third. Vadamos, who stands at Tally Ho Stud
in Ireland during the northern hemisphere
breeding season, will have his first southern
hemisphere two-year-olds next season. He will
stand for NZ$15,000 (plus GST) at Rich Hill
Stud in the upcoming season.

Four for King Of KingsIt has been 14 years since the late King Of Kings
(Sadler’s Wells) sired a Group 1 winner, with T
J Smith (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Reigning To Win
quickly following in the footsteps of King’s Chapel
and Ike’s Dream. However, the 1998 2000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m) winner finally added a fourth Group
1 victor yesterday when Ronnie’s Candy (4 m ex
Bennie Andthe Jets by Jet Master) took out the
Empress Club Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Turffontein.
The St John Gray-trained Ronnie’s Candy defeated
Vistula (Ideal World) by a length with favourite
Queen Supreme (Exceed And Excel) a further neck
away in third. Ronnie’s Candy is from the last crop of
King Of Kings, who died at the Fort Stud in KwaZulu-
Natal, South Africa in early 2015.
11 for VarThe ever-consistent Var (Forest Wildcat) produced
his 11th Group 1 winner yesterday when Rivarine
(6 h ex River Jetez by Jet Master) broke his Group
1 maiden at the eighth attempt, taking the
Computaform Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m) at Turffontein.
Mike Azzie’s Rivarine defeated Russet Air (What A
Winter) by a long head with a length to Chimichuri
Run (Trippi) in third. Rivarine was twice Group
1-placed as a juvenile but had struggled in five
Group 1 runs since, including well-beaten efforts
twice in this race in 2017 and 2019. He is the first foal
to race out of River Jetez (Jet Master), who performed
with credit on the world stage with placings in the
Dubai Duty Free (Gr 1, 1800m), Singapore Airlines
International Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Beverly D
(Gr 1, 9.5f) after she won the J&B Met (Gr 1, 2000m)
on home soil. Var stands at Avontuur Stud.
Four for PomodoroA surprise victory for Golden Belle (3 f Pomodoro
- Juvenescent by Elusive Quality) in the Camellia
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Turffontein yesterday
provided Pomodoro (Jet Master), South Africa’s
leading first season sire in 2018, with his fourth
individual stakes winner. Sent off a 25-1 chance
having been well beaten on each of her last
three starts, the Sean Tarry-trained three-year-
old made a mockery of those odds as she got the
better of Schippers (Var) by four and a quarter
lengths with Dancing Queen (Mambo In Seattle)
a further half a length adrift in a well stretched out
field. Dual Grade 1 winner Pomodoro stands at
Klawervlei Stud in his native South Africa.
119 for Cape CrossThe William Haggas-trained Nkosikazi (5 m ex
Whatami by Daylami) landed the Hoppings Fillies’
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) under Tom Marquand at
Newcastle yesterday and in the process became the
119th individual stakes winner for her sire Cape Cross
(Green Desert). Making all, she was challenged in the
final furlong but asserted in the closing stages to beat
the favourite Virgin Snow (Gleneagles) by two and
a half lengths while Look Around (Kingman) was a
further length and a half back in third. Tried in Group
1 company as a maiden on her third start at three,
Nkosikazi has won two handicaps from 15 previous
starts and gained small black type when third in the
River Eden Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m5f) at Lingfield
last October. Darley’s Cape Cross died at the age of 23
in 2017 due to the complications of old age.
64 for Sea The StarsGodolphin runner Volkan Star (3 g ex Chicago
Dancer by Azamour) took the honours in the Fairway
Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Newmarket yesterday for
Charlie Appleby and became the 64th individual
stakes winner for Sea The Stars (Cape Cross). Ridden
by William Buick, the three-year-old saw off the
challenge of the previously unbeaten Thunderous
(Night Of Thunder) to win by a length and three
quarters with the runner-up some 12 lengths clear
of Do You Love Me (Galileo) in third. An impressive
winner at Goodwood on his second start last year,
Volkan Star was unplaced on soft ground in the
Zetland Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) on his only other start last
season. He was gelded over the winter and returned
earlier this month to take second in the Newmarket
Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) to Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f)
entrant Mishriff (Make Believe). Sea The Stars stands
at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland where his
fee for 2020 was €150,000 (AUS$245,000 approx).
97 for SilvanoSouth Africa’s four-time champion sire Silvano
(Lomitas) closed in on his century of stakes winners
when Imperial Ruby (3 g ex Ruby Necklace by
Sadler’s Wells) moved him on to the 97 mark
courtesy of his win in the Bidvest Gold Bowl (Gr 3,
3200m) at Turffontein yesterday. Dropping down
from Grade 1 company, the Corne Spies-trained
three-year-old posted the fourth win of his 15-start
career when beating Factor Fifty (Marchfield) by a
head with Top Shot (A P Arrow) another two and
a quarter lengths back in third. Silvano, whose son
Hawwaam won his fifth Group 1 race earlier on the
card, stands Maine Chance Farm in South Africa.
Australia-bound Hawwaam wins fifth Group 1South Africa’s top galloper Hawwaam (4 h Silvano
- Halfway To Heaven by Jet Master) added a
fifth Group 1 win yesterday when he landed the
Champions Challenge (Gr 1, 2000m) at Turffontein
for the second consecutive year. The Mike de Kock-
trained Hawwaam defeated stablemate Soqrat
(Epaulette) by three and a half lengths with another
length and a half to Tierra Del Fuego (Skitt Skizzle)
in third. It is likely to have been Hawwaam’s South
African swansong, with the Sheikh Hamdan-owned
galloper set to go the long route out of the country
through Mauritius with an African horse sickness
audit delayed due to Covid-19. He is likely to be seen
in Australia at some point in his career.
Back-to-back Criterion Stakes for LimatoLimato (Tagula) landed back-to-back victories in the
Criterion Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket yesterday for
Henry Candy. It was the eight-year-old former July
Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and Prix de la Foret (Gr 1, 7f) scorer’s
first win since taking the contest twelve months ago.
Held up by Adam Kirby, he took a gap and quickened
clear in the final furlong to win by three and a half
lengths from Happy Power (Dark Angel) while
Turjomaan (War Front) was a further three quarters
of a length back in third. Tagula (Taufan), now 27,
stands at Rathbarry Stud in Ireland where his fee for
2020 was €4,000 (AUS$6,500 approx). He is also the
sire of former Coolmore shuttler Canford Cliffs, who
now stands at Highlands Stud in South Africa.
Vale ManduroDarley last night announced the death of three-time
Group 1 winner Manduro (Monsun) at the age of 18.
Best known as the sire of champion stayer Vazirabad
and Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2f) winner turned
Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) conqueror Bonfire,
Manduro dies as the sire of six Group 1 winners, 35
stakes victors and the earners of almost €19 million in
prize-money. He suffered a fatal heart attack at Haras
du Logis in France yesterday morning. Darley’s
director of stallions Sam Bullard said: “Manduro has
been a wonderful servant and will be greatly missed
by the team. He has been a reliable source of winners
and stakes performers for breeders."

The heat is on in the race to be
champion trainer with front-runner
Ricky Yiu feeling the burn at his
back after closest rival Francis Lui
maintained his excellent form with a double at
Sha Tin yesterday.
Yiu had to sit and suffer on Wednesday night
when a Lui four-timer lifted the unassuming
chaser to within two wins. That became a
slender lead of one after the Lui stable’s brace
this afternoon but Yiu was keeping his usual
cool after 26/1 longshot Alcari (All Too Hard)
helped his cause.
“Every single win counts heavily!” Yiu said,
with a shrug, after Alcari’s score in race nine
took him to 62 wins for the term; Lui hit back
with Water Diviner (Equiano) in the finale to
end the day on 61.
“Francis’ four wins on Wednesday was
amazing – two of those wins were supposed to
be Vincent’s (Ho) and Zac (Purton) didn’t have
a ride but he got those two, so it was fate,” he
added.
But Yiu, who has led the pack for most of the
season, is hoping his sustained approach and
hard work will draw the fates his way through
the season’s final five fixtures.
“I’ll keep my head down, keep focused and
do my best, then there’s no regret,” he said.
Alcari earned his first win in two years
off a run of hitherto modest form in 2020 that
prompted Yiu to send the five-year-old for a
revitalising sojourn at the Hong Kong Jockey
Club’s Conghua facility.
“He’s another one from Conghua; only
Conghua can explain why he won today. Quite
a few of my horses have run well after going to
Conghua so I have to believe that’s the same
with this horse,” he said.
Matthew Poon, victorious on the stable’s
Jolly Banner (Lonhro) in the Premier Cup (Gr 3,
1400m) last weekend, drove Alcari home in the
Class 3 Lamma Island Handicap (1400m).
Lui, meanwhile, had close ally Vincent
Ho in the plate for Winston’s Lad’s (Churchill
Downs) early-card triumph in section two of
the Class 4 Peng Chau Handicap (1200m), and
then turned to Jack Wong – without a win since
suffering an injury in April – for Water Diviner’s
deep-closing victory in the Class 2 Lantau
Island Handicap (1400m).
“Water Diviner was a big surprise but if you
see how he ran last time, you can see he has
that ability; a lot depends on the situation with
him and today the pacing and the light weight
suited him,” Lui said.
The handler has nailed 10 wins in June to
pile the pressure on Yiu but he too is looking
over his shoulder as he attempts to seal an
unexpected first career championship.
“It’s exciting, of course,” he said. “I just don’t
have much left but the horses are in form. I try
my best, I don't want to focus on who is doing
what – even Tony Cruz is also there.”
Cruz continues to creep into contention
as steadily as his silver locks are lengthening.
The two-time champion trainer relied on Party
Everyday (Snitzel) to take his tally to 58; the
gelding came up best in the Class 4 Tung Lung
Chau Handicap (1650m) to give jockey Karis
Teetan his 23rd win this term on a Cruz stable
galloper.
The battle for the jockeys’ championship
is still on but Joao Moreira was able to pull just
one win back on Zac Purton.
The Brazilian rode a double to Purton’s
single score but that still left the Australian six
wins ahead with five fixtures left, one of which
Moreira will sit out due to suspension.
Moreira hit the mark on the Manfred Man-
trained E Star (Ferlax) in the Class 3 Cheung
Chau Handicap (1200m) before capturing
a satisfying victory on Heza Beauty (Darci
Brahma) in the Class 4 Po Toi Handicap
(1400m) for his main patron, John Size.
“John has done most of the work just to
teach Heza Beauty to settle down properly and
only now has he been able to put it together and
perform, and do it straightforwardly for me. We
know he has ability and he should improve a lot
more from this run,” Moreira said.
Purton enjoyed an impressive win aboard
the Danny Shum-trained Angel Of My Eyes
(Niagara) in section one of the Class 4 Peng
Chau Handicap (1200m). The defending
champion jockey has 137 wins on the board to
Moreira’s 131.

Moore’s Happy for BorgesJohn Moore is moving through the
dimming twilight of his Hong Kong career
without a faltering step and secured his 52nd
and 53rd wins of the season in tandem with
Vagner Borges, a rider beginning to bloom one
year on from his initial brief brush with the
circuit.
Borges has struck up a noticeable
partnership with Moore, who will leave Hong
Kong for Sydney at the end of the campaign.
The duo have secured eight wins together,
the latest two being the upwardly progressing
Beauty Happy (Elzaam), who earned his
third win on the bounce under the Brazilian
rider, and the Hong Kong International Sale
graduate, Touch Of Luck (Hard Spun).
“They gave that race to him on a plate!”
Moore said after Borges set the tempo on
Beauty Happy and eased past the post a
length and a quarter clear in the Class 3 Kat O
Handicap (2000m).
“They let him just dictate, increase the
tempo and you could see what the outcome
was going to be, he was going to sprint in the
straight, for sure. I think everybody there fell
into a bit of a trap, but to our benefit.”
Borges rode five meetings here last term
for no success, but has collected 16 wins since
his return to Hong Kong in mid-March.
“Some owners had come to me and
said they didn't think he could ride a good
2000-metre race, but I tend to disagree with
that comment. His dictating today was right
on song,” Moore revealed.
“I’ve helped him make into a better jockey
in Hong Kong and he’s now getting support
throughout the stables, which I’m happy
about because he is a very nice fella; he does
follow instructions close to what he’s been
asked to do and I believe he’s got a future in
Hong Kong.”
Borges emphasised that point with Touch
Of Luck’s smooth score in the Class 3 Grass
Island Handicap (1650m). The jockey took
advantage of gate two and stalked the pace,
before shifting out and bowling four and a
quarter lengths clear.
“They were two big horses with big chances
and everything went right to get the wins. I’m
very pleased with the support and advice Mr.
Moore has given me,” Borges said.
Caspar Fownes maintained his stable’s
good form when Double Take (Declaration Of
War) grabbed the opener, the Class 5 Waglan
Island Handicap (1650m). Neil Callan drove
the three-year-old to his maiden win, taking
the Irishman’s season’s tally to a healthy 24
before he was stood down after spraining his
left hip in race five.
Racing continues at Sha Tin on Wednesday
with the annual July 1 holiday card, a day
meeting.

Margins: 1.8 lens, 0.1 lens. Time: 2:07.72(last 600m 36.49).Betting: $15.00, $2.40, $4.30.
Then followed: Mississippi Delta (AUS), Humidor (NZ), Noir De Rue (AUS), Mizlecki (AUS) & Taxagano (AUS), last.
Analysis: Disappointing after seven attempts in Melbourne last year, Material Man returned to his previous best Perth form with a clear-cut win here, his eighth stakes and 15th overall against some solid opponents. He settled fifth with a lap to run and past the 1600m raced in the clear one off the rail. From the 1200m he held his position approaching the 600m where he crept closer. Rounding into the home straight he went wider, turning in four deep. Travelling well, he balanced and went after the leaders, was almost abreast at the 200m then took over at the 100m. To the line he was too strong and kept extending his lead, away by a length and three quarters. Perfect Jewel sat second last, one out at the 1000m, tracked the winner from the 600m but kept to the middle in the home straight and finished well without looking to catch the winner. The Velvet King had the run of the race, challenged from the 300m, led but had no answer the last 50m. Mississippi Delta ran on from second last for fourth. [LJ]

Margins: 0.3 lens, 1.3 lens. Time: 2:17.11(last 600m 33.97).Betting: $5.50, $6.00, $7.00.
Then followed: Satono Rasen (JPN), Kaonic (NZ), Le Juge (IRE), Fighting Teo (AUS), A Man To Match (AUS) & Picka Plum (NZ), last.
Analysis: Recent winner of the Gosford Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Randwick on May 9, Another Dollar did well in adding another stakes victory three starts later in winning here. She enjoyed a good trip in fourth place (one out and one back) behind a moderate pace before improving nearing the turn. She challenged at the 200m and then finished best in the sprint-home to win well. La Pulga had a good run in third place on the rails, got through on the inner to take the lead at 200m and then fought on for (neck) second, finding the winner (who he conceded 4kg) too good. The winner’s stablemate Alward raced outside the leader, briefly went to the front on straightening and then battled on to take third with Satono Rasen holding on four (1.9 lengths) fourth after leading to the home turn with yet another Chris Waller runner and favourite Kaonic coming from second last at the turn for (2.1 lengths) fifth after being disadvantaged by the very steady early tempo. Then followed: Barefoot (AUS), Red Stina (AUS), Strome (AUS), Tricky Gal (AUS), Delectation Girl (GB), Paint The Town Two (NZ), Mewstone Rock (NZ), Shuhood (AUS) & Teleplay (AUS), last.
Analysis: After racing consistently with six wins in 23 prior starts, Sure Knee scored her first stakes success with a Group 3 victory in winning here. She settled near last on the rails from a difficult barrier (10), switched deeper and into clear running at the turn and then sprinted quickly in recording a very good win. It was also a good ride by Luke Dittman. Krone raced in seventh place on the rails, eased wider at the turn, hit the front at the 100m but could not then hold off the late-closing winner to take second in a sound effort. The well-supported favourite Baccarat Baby was wide early on from her difficult barrier (11) before settling in sixth place (one off the rails). She was under riding coming to the turn and then kept fighting on to finish third. Barefoot had a good run from her inside barrier (1), racing in third spot on the rails, challenged at the 200m and then battled on for well (1.3 lengths) fourth. [KB]

Then followed: The Lord Mayor (NZ), Herengawe (NZ), Sully (NZ), Wu Gok (AUS), Primitivo (AUS), Attention Run (GER), Big Duke (IRE), Paths Of Glory (GB) & Mongolian Wolf (AUS), last.
Analysis: Frankely Awesome put up her best performance since two Group 1 placings last season, claiming the lead at the 50m then going on to score by a comfortable three quarters of a length. She was quickly into stride but at the 1600m drifted to midfield (rails) where she remained to the 1000m. From the 600m she moved out to be in behind the leading group. Slightly pocketed at the top of the straight she went wider, found space, balanced and began the chase from the 300m. Within a length at the 200m she was travelling best, ranged up at the 100m then ran clear for a comfortable win, her third and maiden stakes success. Sixties Groove was well back at the 800m, third last at the top of the straight then threaded his way through the field and swooped the last 50m to nab second. Carzoff improved to fifth, three out at the 600m, four wide at the 400m, co-led at the 300m then kept going, losing second on the line. From last, The Lord Mayor finished well through the middle for fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Twitchy Frank (AUS), Bargannon (AUS), Chapter And Verse (AUS), Spectroscope (USA), Star Reflection (AUS) & Ready For Danger (AUS), last.
Analysis: Consistent and well-travelled gelding Inquiry broke through for his first stakes success with a very good win here, his tenth victory (with six placings) in 23 starts. He showed his customary pace to lead and then set a solid pace, held a clear advantage at the turn and then safely held his opposition to win well. The favourite and top weight (59kg) Scallopini settled closer than expected racing in fourth place. He improved along the inner nearing the turn, went to second at the 200m and then kept battling on really well for second after conceding the winner 5kg. Right Or Wrong had a good trip in third place, tracking a quick pace and did quite well in holding on to take the minor placing. Twitchy Frank chased the free-running leader and eventual winner and held on for (2.9 lengths) fourth. [KB]

Analysis: Trumbull was rewarded with his maiden stakes win and career sixth after several solid recent performances, adding a nice effort here. He dwelt slightly but soon rushed up to sit outside the pacemaker, these two clear of the field which allowed him to drop into second (rails) before drifting a shade to settle fourth. He crept forward from the 600m and turning in was right on the leader's heels. When the leader eased away from the fence he hugged the fence and drove through, co-led at the 300m but at the 200m was a length clear and two lengths clear at the 100m from where he was able to coast to the line by a length. Order Again was midfield (rails) at the 600m, handy but pocketed at the top of the straight and did not get clear until the 200m then finished strongly for second. Dealmaker ran up four wide at the 400m to challenge and kept battling on well for the length of the straight to finish third while pacemaker and top weight (60.5kg) Home Of The Brave was collared at the 300m but fought on for fourth.
