The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters
Vol 30, Issue 11 November 2013
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Wow, what a couple of eventful months PHP has had. As
some of you already know, Redwood Elderlink has been
our painting location for some years and has gone through
some financial changes. We have known since the first of
the year that they lost their funding, so it seemed we were
waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it finally did! We
no longer have the use of that room. They tried to let us
use another room they have called Dittus Hall but alas it
just did not work out. We will meet, at least for the next
few months, at San Marcos Mobile Home Park. Teri
Hayes has been out beating the bushes looking for a new
spot for us and we have some real possibilities. When we
have chosen a place, we will let you know.
So, Marty Robson's class in November & our Christmas
Party will be at my place. Also I have to tell you because
of this, the date of the Christmas Party has been moved to
SUNDAY Dec. 8th. I sure hope this will not be a problem
for anyone.
Bobbie Takashima's class in Oct. was fantastic. It was
such a fun class. Bobbie is such a knowledgeable artist
and teacher. She always has so much to share with her
students, you really come away with a good feeling. She
is our best, local teacher and you should all take the oppor-
tunity to take from this world-renowned teacher right here
in your own backyard. Check out her website for classes
and pattern packets www.bobbieartstudio.com.
November is upon us already, and I am looking forward to
Marty's class, as the “winter scene” is so beautiful. And
besides that, we will also have our project vote for next
year. I know we have some wonderful pieces submit-
ted. So even if you are not taking the class, you can come
by and at least vote for next year's slate of classes. I know
we are planning on online voting again this year.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (continued from Page 1)
We are having a Potluck at our November meeting, so if you are coming and want to bring something, con-
tact Jeanne Robert as she is handling the list.
858-576-7163 or [email protected].
Also, we have Election of new officers in November. Here is the slate of officers for 2014:
President ··························· Charlotte Hicks
1st Vice/Programs ······················· Sue Bond
2nd Vice/Membership ············ Cynthia Megill
Secretary ····························· Mary Weflen
Treasurer ···························· Joanne Schutz
If anyone wants to hold a committee chair position, please let me know what you would like to do. I know
we need someone to do the Raffles. Joanne & Joyce have done such a wonderful job but they have had it for
2 years & now it’s your chance to take on this wonderful position. It can be a group of friends that paint to-
gether. You can give things to people to paint for you. We have a budget for you to use. Think about buy-
ing for our raffles at our convention coming up in May here in San Diego. How fun would that be?
We already have someone for the Mystery Paint-In for 2015, but we need someone for the 2014 Christmas
Party. Think about what you want to do to help with your chapter for 2014, as we need all the support we
can get. So please, please volunteer and help the chapter!!
See you soon, Sue

1st V.P. of Programs News :
This popular class is almost full. Contact Charlotte Hicks asap ([email protected]) if you want to join
in on the fun. Parking is limited at the San Marcos Mobile Estates venue so you might want to look at the list
of ladies who are attending and consider carpooling.
The following are signed up and paid for the class: Neva Anderson, Linda Silvasy, Virginia Davies, Karen
Ortman, Jeanne Robert, Joanne Schutz, Sandy Garcia, Deborah Lakin, Nancy Wozniak, Leslie Pilcher,
Jackie Hegle, Charlotte Hicks, Renee Molloy, Cynthia Megill, Sheila Elliott, Charlene Butler, Candy Sciar-
retta, Teri Hayes, Carol Voyles, Karen Krause, Roxanne Walker, Carol Ganzi, Kenna Perrin, Carol Fossett,
Linda Eastom, Linda Miller, Linda Howard, Donna Johnson, and Anita Lane.
Holiday Party: The date and location have changed to SUNDAY, December 8th at the San Marcos Mo-
bile Estates club house. The committee (aka, volunteer elves) has been hard at work on the menu, theme,
decorations, and program. The cost is only $15.00 per person, thanks to partial subsidizing by the chapter.
Don’t forget to sign up and join in the fun.
January class with Bobbie Koelsch: We are thrilled to have Bobbie on our program schedule as she is now
so busy with travel teaching and her work with David Jansen. Please look forward to beyond the holidays
and sign up to paint her adorable little pine warbler.
Location, Location, Location (again!): The November paint-in and the Holiday party will be held at the
San Marcos Mobile Estates club house. Please make a note of this. We are still looking for a consistent
painting location for the new year. Please let us know if you have any leads. Thank you to Teri Hayes who
has been out beating the bushes for us above and beyond the call of duty.
Project VOTE for 2014-2015: We have received project submissions from eleven wonderful local and
nearby artist/teachers and this is going to prove to be a tough vote again this year. You have two voting op-
tions to give everyone the opportunity to participate: (1) in person at the November 9th paint-in location,
show up any time during the class time, or (2) vote online. The online vote material will be loaded onto the
website on November 9th. Look at the photos and project descriptions, and either print out and mail the vot-
ing sheet to Charlotte, or email your choices to Charlotte. Please only vote for projects that you wish to
paint. Look carefully at the photos and descriptions so that you are not overlooking some “gem” pieces. It’s
wonderful to have the projects to see in person, but some of our artists were only able to submit via photo.
Consider the opportunity to learn a new technique, learn from a new artist, or paint something that might be a
gift or auction donation when making your choices. We have only seven class slots to fill this next year and
a wonderful variety of creative submissions to choose from.
Don’t forget to VOTE!
Submitting artist/teachers include: Vicki Allwardt, Carol Ganzi, Sandy Garcia, Lori Hillstead, Diane Jensen,
Robin Mani, Linda McFadden, Karen Ortman, Jack Ragland, Keith Sluder, and Onya Tolmasoff. (applause)
Looking forward to painting with all of you soon,
Charlotte

munity of artists who are dedicated to their craft and supportive of each other even outside of decorative
painting. So please stick with us, be a part of a loving environment of people who care about painting and
each other!!

3 Ways you can improve your liner skills
without practicing....
1. “The brush is a loser!” A good liner brush is either cut to keep a point or made to snap and zip around like a sports car.
A bad liner brush looks like it has been electrocuted
and flops around without snap.
It might just be time for a NEW brush.
2. “The brush should be ALL WET…”
Swishing a liner in water and setting it aside for 2-3 minutes before using will improve the flow of paint,
that's a scientific fact!
3. “A Loaded liner is a better liner…” A well loaded liner brush is key to great liner skills.
Place the bristles onto a thinned puddle of paint ( don't stab at the paint) Pulling back towards your shoul-
der as you leave the puddle. A liner brush is one of the few brushes that should be fully loaded all the way up
to the ferrule... a good liner is designed to release paint to the tip once it's fully loaded.
These 3 techniques don't take any practice, you'll have prettier liner skills today!
Shared by Patricia Rawlinson., Creative Arts Lifestyle in a newsletter email.
More Tips : 2 –4 Shared By Leslie Pilcher….. 2. “A glass top on your painting table is wonderful.” Put round, felt furniture glide stickers between the
glass and the table, so you can slide your instructions and photos underneath. The glass cleans up with water,
vinegar (or Lift-Off) and an old credit card will scrape up the paint.
3. “If you don’t know about Motsenbocker’s Lift-Off Latex-Based Paint Remover”, go to Home Depot
and get some (Paint Department). Cleans acrylic paint out of clothes and off the floor and other surfaces.
4. “The pumps on the empty travel bottles at Container Store” fit the 2 oz. and 8 oz. bottles we use per-
fectly. Buy the big (or small) bottle of Deco-Art Magic Brush Cleaner and replace the top with the
pump. Make sure the straw is the proper length, i.e. reaches to the bottom. You can hold your dirty
brush(es) in one hand and use THAT WRIST to pump cleaner into the palm of your other hand and then
massage your brushes in your palm. You don’t have to put the brushes down to squeeze cleaner into your
palm.

From the Newsletter Editor: Comments shared by Carol Voyles who took Bobbie T’s 2-day seminar:
I had the pleasure to paint at the Bobbie Takashima seminar in Oct. Her
detailed whimsical patterns were awe-inspiring. We wore pumpkin face
moon pins, ate delicious breakfast and lunch selections and tried our luck in
winning many of the raffle prizes. Painting our ‘Pumpkin Moon & Trick-
sters’ and ‘Christmas Tree Frog’ projects over the two days began with dry
brush shading on your design first- using Jo Sonja’s Sure Touch brushes.
We then applied 3-5 values of color- painting in the objects using a dirty
brush until you reached your final highlight of yellow light and white mix.
This is different from how we normally paint- basecoat, shade, highlight.
Her technique gives your piece a 3-D effect.
As the weekend progressed we became Bobbie’s ‘grasshoppers’ as we
learned many tips while painting---why a certain color is chosen or adding
darker values in the shading of your triangular areas. Bobbie’s biggest sug-
gestion to all of us: “You don’t have to follow the pattern lines, loosen up
your edges, give your design a chance to breathe, be fearless!! and do your
own thing”. Aren’t we privileged to have someone like her in our corner of
the world to teach us to become better painters? I am.
Grasshopper Carol
From the Newsletter Editor:
A big “thank you” to Jeanne Robert for taking class photos on
Day 1 of Bobbie T’s seminar. It was greatly appreciated and
she got so many great pictures.
Thanks again, Karen Krause
