Ants In Your Garden ... Are They A Problem?

More No than Yes ... Ants living around your plants can increase the watering needs as they tunnel through your soil creating air pockets and drier conditions. Yet, those same tunnels help aerate the soil. And, if the ants are on your plants foliage, that's usually an indication that harmful sucking insects like aphids or whiteflies are feeding on and damaging your plants. Sucking insects leave a sweet "honeydew" residue that ants love. So, the ants are an early warning of insect problems that need to be addressed. At the first sign of this, control both the ants and the insects appropriately since the ants may actually begin to move the insects around to get more honeydew. If the problem is on an edible plant, be careful what spray you use. Ask us.

Did you know that an investment in landscaping is the only home improvement that increases the value of your home over time? Since fall is the best time to plant, take advantage of these super savings now!

October High Desert Bird-of-the-Month: American and Lesser Goldfinch Both the American (pictured below) and Lesser Goldfinch (pictured here) inhabit our area, though the Lesser is far more commonly seen. The breeding male American Goldfinch has a bright yellow body, black cap, wings, and tail, and a white rump and undertail coverts. The wings have flashy white patches. Bill is pink and conical. The winter American Goldfinch, like the immatures, are either brownish or grayish above. The male may show some black on the forehead. The female American Goldfinch is duller yellow than the male, has olive above and lacks the black cap and yellow shoulder bar. The Lesser Goldfinch is a small finch with dark green back, black crown, and bright yellow underparts. Wings and tail are black with white markings. Winter male is duller. Female is smaller, duller, and lacks black cap. Juvenile is similar to female but has greener underparts. Goldfinches prefer nyjer and premium oil sunflower seeds. They will eat from finch tube feeders, mesh tube feeders, seed tube feeders, hopper feeders and tray feeders. Fun Facts:

● Unlike many birds, the American Goldfinch undergoes a complete molt each spring. This molt requires a large amount of nutrients and energy which probably diminishes their ability to nest earlier in the season.

● American Goldfinch can weave their nest so tightly that it will temporarily hold water.

● Like their cousin the American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinches will delay breeding until the greatest number of thistle, dandelion and other composite flowers are seeding.

● The Lesser Goldfinch is believed to be monogamous with its mate

UPCOMING SEMINARS

October 6: Creating a Fall Bird Sanctuary - Fall is a great time to set up bird feeders. It allows the winter dwellers to become familiar with them before bad weather arrives and gives migratory birds much needed nutrition for their travels. Join local birding guru and longtime Audubon Society member Alan Gubanich to learn about plants that provide shelter, food sources, how to maintain a consistent source of water and how to indentify the many species that will show up in your yard. October 13: Best Trees for Reno - Steve Churchillo (City of Reno Urban Forester) and Jon Bruyn (Moana plant doctor, horticulturalist and certified arborist) team up for this informative seminar devoted to trees. They will discuss which are the best trees for Reno and why plus review the Champion Tree list of mature specimens located in Reno, explaining why they made the list. They will also share the results of the Reno/Sparks Tree Canopy Assessment which analyzed our current tree canopy and the economic and environmental benefits of existing and future tree canopy scenarios. October 20: Putting your Garden to Bed - Moana plant doctor, consulting horticulturalist and long time high desert gardener Jim Stanton will explain what you should and should not do in your landscape to prepare for winter as well as during the coming winter months. Because critters can wreak havoc during the winter if you are not prepared, Jim will thoroughly discuss how to protect your lawn and plants from deer, voles, rabbits, insects and diseases. He will also address winter care of fruit trees and what yard waste can be composted. (A detailed composting seminar will be held on November 3rd.) October 27: Hooray! Hooray! - Applause! Applause!Bring in a few photos of your flower garden/containers to celebrate your season-long gardening endeavors! Long-time gardening expert speaker/instructor as well as published photographer/writer Lainie Vreeland will
