Introductions

• Sauna, is a Finnish word referring to a small room or cabin designed to help individuals experience damp or dry heat sessions.

• They can be categorized into two major types: the infrared saunas and the convectional saunas. The difference between these two types is that, the convectional one warms the air while the infrared type warms objects.

Purpose of Sauna

• The sauna is used for health purposes to clean out toxins and impurities from the body.

• This is because it is a form of heat therapy that opens the skin pores and facilitates sweating. They are also used for relaxation and stress relief.

History of Sauna

• It was first invented in Finland over 2,000 years ago as a way of bringing satisfaction to the innate need of being clean. Since the Finns were nomads, they could erect underground sweat houses wherever they settled. This was referred to as Savusauna.

Evolution of Sauna

• The Finn later brought improvements on the bathhouse by creating a more advanced metal woodstove heater instead of the stone stove. A chimney was also introduced to the cabin.

• The Finn took this culture along with them to all the places they went.

Sauna in the age of Electricity

• The age of electricity brought about advancements and thus the creation of the electrical sauna. Under this technology, electrical coils are used to heat the rocks thus replacing the use of wood fire.

• The electrical stove made it possible for individuals to get the original rural Finnish experience in urban places such as apartments, health clubs and hotels.

Latest Evolution of Sauna

• The latest evolution involves use of Infrared technology which was discovered by Dr. John Kellog. In this case, air is heated using an invisible band of light.

• The electromagnetic radiation received here is like that one from the sun or wood fire. The infrared type has a more valuable advantage of detoxification.

Conclusion

• The use of Sauna has had a long journey from the enclosed fire to the infrared type.

• Today, they are available in all sizes and types to meet the user's desires. They have also grown in popularity due to the great health benefits that come along with their use.
