ADVICE FROM ANGLIAN WATER ON DEALING

WITH BURST PIPES IN FREEZING WEATHER

With winter well and truly upon us, it pays to be prepared for any household emergencies and Anglian Water offers this advice on dealing with burst pipes. No-one wants a burst pipe.As emergencies go, they can be a real nuisance so it’s a good idea to put some thought into what you would do if you had a burst pipe in your home.

If your pipes burst, try to minimise any damage by:1. Turn off the water supply:Turn off the main stop tap. This could be the external stop tap located at your property boundary and/or the internal stop tap which should be in the cupboard under the kitchen sink or at the point where the service pipe comes into your home.

Drain the cold water system by turning on all your cold taps. Keep an eye on your ceilings. If water has been leaking for a while, there may be some damaged plaster waiting to fall. Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out if it starts to bulge.2. Turn off water heating systems:Switch off your central heating, immersion heater and any other water heating systems. If the central heating uses solid fuel, let this die out. Once your water heating has shut down, turn on the hot taps to help drain the system.3. Turn off the electrics:Don’t touch any wet electrical fittings such as lights, sockets or appliances. Switch off the electricity supply straight away and call an electrician.4. Call a professional to repair the damage.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWSfrom County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

[email protected] or 07968 897235Dear Residents of Holt County Division,Even though I am not writing this on ‘Blue Monday’ it would perhaps have been more appropriate, as I am afraid this month’s report is not as upbeat as I would normally like.At the time of writing the Police and Crime Commissioner is out to consultation about proposed increases to his element of our council tax. He reports that in order to maintain levels of policing at their current level he needs to ask for increased contributions of 46p per week from each ‘band D’ and above household. Considering that this time last year he promised us an increase in police numbers if we agreed to a maximum increase in precept payments, I wonder how he squares the circle? We were told then that we would see greater numbers of officers on the streets of North Norfolk despite the removal of PCSO’s, but just where are these officers? We are lucky that we have committed and dedicated beat officers in our local towns but even with the best will in the world they cannot be everywhere all the time. I am completely dismayed by Norfolk County Council’s decision to close Holt Children’s Centre, who provide such a range of invaluable services for our youngest residents and their families. Even more so having met with some of the team delivering those services, who despite this major setback remain resolute they will do all they can to maintain service levels for those they work with. I will be staying in close contact with them over the coming weeks as we learn more about the alternative

service proposals and will do all I can to support them.Last night I attended an official hearing for the proposed Orsted wind farm development which was held at the District Council offices. Sadly, the number of officials and representatives of the Orsted company vastly outweighed the number of official representatives or members of the public; but I do think this was down largely to the way in which the event was publicised. We continue to push them for more engagement with the communities this proposal would impact the most on, the villages of Weybourne, Kelling and High Kelling, asking for more information on the phasing, the route planning and most importantly when we can expect a decision about the system they will implement AC or DC.As my colleague Marie always says, ‘onwards and upwards’, until next time.Sarah, County Councillor for Holt Division(Aylmerton, Barningham, Bessingham, Cley-next-the-Sea, East Beckham, East Runton, Gresham, High Kelling, Holt, Kelling, Matlaske, Metton, Runton, Salthouse, Sustead, Upper Sheringham, West Beckham, West Runton, Weybourne)

Budgens of Aylsham’s charity cheque was presented to Nelson’s Journey Volunteer, Lynne Burrell, by Mr Baker and Budgens Aylsham Manager, Shane Woolston.C T Baker Builders’ Merchant concluded a successful year, one in which it was named a finalist at the Builders’ Merchants Awards for Excellence, by raising £500 for the Norfolk & Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group. A charity cheque was presented by Mr Baker and C T Baker Builders’ Merchant Area Manager, Paul Pamment, to Chairman Nigel Gardiner and Welfare Officers George and Jill Siely.“I would like to congratulate our staff for their innovative fundraising events, which have resulted in a record giveaway to local charities,” said Mr Baker.Looking ahead to 2019, C T Baker Group looks forward to working with the following charities: Norfolk & Waveney Prostate Cancer Support Group (Bakers & Larners), Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk (C T Baker Budgens Holt), Walnut Tree Health & Wellbeing (C T Baker Budgens Aylsham), Mundesley Lifeboat (C T Baker Builders’ Merchants).

AID AFRICA UPDATE….At this time of the year, in rural Malawi, so many are hungry, but last week hundreds received maize, soya meals and soap to help them through to the next harvest. Families within our ‘target group’, those caring for orphans, living with disabilities, the elderly, or AIDS-affected, thronged to our site early in the morning to patiently wait their turn to receive. At that point, life became vastly different, and hope restored. In Mthowa Village, life has changed in another way, the Community Centre we built is now the new social hub

of the area, providing superb facilities for education, health checks, civic meetings and social events. And it all started with a little nursery school, with 41 children from 4 villages, taught under blue gum trees, by 5 voluntary teachers. They had no resources or building for security, or to protect the kids from the rains, so thanks to the generosity of Holt & district supporters, we were able to help. This amazing Community Centre was just one of three we built last year (2018), in addition to three bridges, three houses for the frail, and over 50 roofs

destroyed by storms. We repaired 19 boreholes bringing safe, local water back to about 20,000 people, sponsored 106 children in secondary education, and gave out small business loans to empower people with the opportunity to work their way out of poverty. Elderlies Luncheons were prepared every fortnight, our goats’ milk and phala (fortified porridge) distributed to vulnerable babies, we gave out male goats from our dairy herd and continued to urgently plant trees for fuel, green manure (to improve crops) and nutrition. Apart from food, we continue to help local people in distress, funding emergency medical/dental treatment and transport, funeral help, sleeping mats, primary school uniforms, vegetable seeds, and we gave out over 500 pairs of glasses along with knitted blankets and jumpers.

We’re not reporting all this to ‘blow our own trumpet’ but to show the life-changing impact that we can bring about together when resources are carefully invested with wisdom and local knowledge. If you’d like to help us continue, please make a point of bringing in donations to the shop, either monetary or goods for sale. We’re urgently in need of both, and warmly invite you to join us in changing the lives of some of the poorest people on the planet!Thank you for your help and support!Using Amazon ? LATCHED ON BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP

IS MOVING TO SHERINGHAM!The local and popular breastfeeding support group ‘Latched On’ is moving to the Sheringham Lighthouse; its first session in the new location is to be held on Saturday 9th February!‘Latched On’ is a well established breastfeeding support group and clinic that has previously been held in Holt. In 2017 three local mums identified the lack of services for breastfeeding families in North Norfolk and lead by filling the gap themselves with ‘Latched On’.In their first year (2017-2018), Latched On was visited by 64 families in total, 27 of whom attended multiple sessions; 5 of those families were antenatal and 4 returned for support with their new babies! On average we have in attendance 5 families per session. The group offers a safe, secure, nurturing and FREE space for women and families who are breastfeeding, will be or are considering breastfeeding, would like to find out more about breastfeeding or, have breastfed in the past and would like to offer support to families breastfeeding now or in the future. Sessions are free and on the second Saturday of every month from 10.00am till 12.00noon, offering free teas and coffees. Each session is led by a qualified Lactation Consultant and supported by professionals and other mums. For further information, email [email protected]

Happy Valentine’s

Day

HOLT WI NOR’EASTER MEETING Holt WI recently hosted a meeting for the Nor’easter group of WIs, when representatives from five local WIs came to an illustrated talk held in Holt Community Centre. Simon Kinder, Head of the History Department at Gresham’s School, came to speak about ‘North Norfolk-England’s Achilles’ Heel?’. The North Norfolk coast has always been recognised as being vulnerable to invasion. The Romans knew the area, Queen Elizabeth 1 planned an extensive defensive fort to be built on the coast at Weybourne. Napoleon considered this area for an invading army, when we know the only defence at the time were two rusted old cannon at Cromer. Even Hitler knew of the suitability of the area for a landing site, due to the depth of the sea and the availability of extensive accessible shallow sandy beaches. Moving on from the geographical disadvantages of the area Simon then talked about other influences in more modern times. ‘The Riddle of the Sands’ by Erskin Childers, published in 1903 is an early example of the espionage novel and was extremely influential at the time. Erskin had a son at Gresham’s and was so well known and liked he used to land his plane on the First X1 cricket pitch. ‘The Invasion of 1910’ by William Le Queux a journalist was serialised in the Daily Mail and sent a very strong message of ‘Be ready .. the Germans are coming’.Because of these publications, local people became very suspicious of anyone with a foreign accent. Sir Edgar Speyer was an extremely successful businessman and philanthropist but he had been born in Germany. He financed the London Underground and saved the Proms from collapse and had built ‘Sea Marge’ at Overstrand, but at the start of the 1st World War it was said the tennis courts were spaces for Zeppelins to land and the Underground had tunnels full of German soldiers. So he became an object of suspicion and harassment and had to leave the country. This was later recorded in the book ‘Speyers - Banker, Traitor, Scapegoat, Spy?’. It is also said that a Mr and Mrs Dodds, who spoke with a German accent were arrested at Weybourne Mill and never seen again! Mr Kinder also outlined the role of Donald McClean, one of the Cambridge Five spies, who had attended Gresham’s School and was recruited by Arnold Deutsch when he was at Cambridge University. Others who had attended Gresham’s and became spies or double agents were Ken Cross, Bernard Flood, Peter Flood and James Clubman, the latter being responsible for turning many students to be pro-Communist and who started the first National Teacher Union at Gresham’s. So it can be seen that some of those who were educated in North Norfolk also posed a threat to England. This was a fascinating and very detailed illustrated talk which is hardly given due credit in this piece. I would highly recommend if you have a chance to attend this lecture yourself ... take it!

SANTANDERDear Caroline,It is often that I despair of decisions made by people who are far removed from the source of a problem but the decision of Santander to close their Holt branch has moved me to do everything in my small way to halt such a ridiculous decision. When visiting probably once a week there are always people in front of me, others in the office and usually someone on the inside cash machine. The staff are delightful and go out of their way to help. How can Santander say there are more people using online banking than visiting a branch? Please let your readers know that there is a book in the branch to sign and they can login and send a complaint via their account too. I did this yesterday and received a phone call today from the Complaints Investigative Team who I asked to pass my complaint onto the people who made the decision. They have told me someone will be in touch within five to seven days, let’s bombard them!People of Holt don’t let this happen, stand up and fight.Yours sincerely, Brenda J Hines

THANK YOU FOR A KINDNESS

Dear Caroline,A few days ago a neighbour of mine was in the Holt Fish Bar purchasing chips when she became unwell. The owner of the chip shop tried to persuade her to sit and rest and he would call a doctor but she just wanted to get home. So, very kindly, he helped her back to where she lived and I bumped into them. I guided him to her door and she gave me the key and we went in. Another neighbour called the doctor and her

sister. At no time did the young man make any rush to leave her even though he had customers waiting.I just want to say a huge thank you to him (sorry I don’t know his name). In this world where there is so much unpleasantness it is heartwarming when something like this happens.Good luck to him and his business.Yours sincerely,Shirley Whitehouse

DOG FOULINGDear Caroline,During the past few weeks there have been frequent incidents of dog fouling in Holt on the Cromer Road footpath.I think it must be a local dog because it happens so regularly. Please, please could the owner clear up after their dog, as it is quite horrid.Yours sincerely,Peta Benson

GREETINGS CARDSDear Caroline,Do any of the readers of the Holt Chronicle have an address to which to send old greetings cards?Morrisons used to have a ‘12th Night Appeal’ box, but has had to cease this facility as the glitter was blocking up the machine!Yours sincerely,T. Cooke

THE MISSING MESSIAHDear Caroline,I am wondering if any Christian readers of The Holt Chronicle would know why Christianity has two Messiahs symbolised as two olive trees and the two lamp stands at (Revelation 11:4). They have clearly been harvested from Zechariah chapter four; and

altered a little which is what Christianity did. So why was only one Messiah born at Bethlehem, and only one crucified at Jerusalem? My own view is that the two messiahs have been united in the fictional body of Jesus and that the uniting of these two Messiahs into one body was not a new thing for the Church to do.So, if any Christians think that I am wrong I would not mind hearing from them,my number is 07887 793666, send us a text if you want. At the time of writing no Christian has answered any of my other questions. Not one has been in contact with me.Yours sincerely,Maurice Gray

THANK YOUDear Caroline,May I, through The Holt Chronicle, thank the lady who found my keys in the car park on Friday 25th January and handed them into Budgens in Holt.Thank you. I am most grateful.Yours sincerely,Catherine Hutchinson

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLINGThe Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

A FUNNY, THOUGHT-PROVOKING STORY NOT FOUND IN THE BIBLEMenachim, a Jewish father was troubled by the way his son, Benjamin, had turned out, and went to see Rabbi Goldberg about it.“I brought Benjamin up in the faith, gave him a very expensive bar mitzvah; it cost me a fortune to educate him, then he tells me last week he has decided to be a Christian. Rabbi, where did I go wrong?” pleaded Menachim.“Funny, Menachim, that you should come to me,” commented Rabbi Goldberg. “Like you I, too, brought my boy up in the faith, put him through University; that cost me a fortune, then one day he, too, tells me he has decided to become a Christian.”“What did you do?” inquired Menachim“I turned to God for the answer,” replied the Rabbi.“And what did He say?” pressed Menachim.God said, “Funny you should come to me..........”

Dear Friends, If you are looking for a Valentine card there’s no shortage from which to choose. They include the sentimental and thoughtful, the flippant and the crude. They might be expressions of deep, sincere feeling, or indicate an ugly debasement of love amounting almost to blasphemy, given that, as Scripture teaches us, ‘God is Love’ (1st Letter of St. John). You find hearts and red roses, cupids, poems and so-called “adult humour” cartoons, but no image of the saint who gives his name to 14th February. Valentine was one of the many early Christians who were persecuted and killed because of their faith in Jesus. He was martyred in Rome in A.D. 269. We don’t know the actual day he was put to death but it’s possible that this date was chosen to honour him to replace the manic pagan debauchery called Lupercalia practised at that time. There could be no greater difference from that wild bestiality than the genuine divine Love seen in all its perfection in Jesus. One of the most ‘iconic’ sights in London is the statue

called Eros at Piccadilly Circus. It would make a good design for a Valentine card, but it’s not Cupid who balances there with his bow and arrow. It’s not Eros either! Those two mythological figures represent sensual, earthly love. The famous statue is properly called Anteros, or The Angel of Christian Charity, signifying spiritual, divine love and was erected in memory of Anthony Ashley-

Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. (Before retirement one of my parishes was Wimborne St. Giles, his ancestral home in Dorset). ‘Charity’ originally meant the highest, purest love, and then came to include good deeds inspired by God who is Love. It was the Earl’s love of the Lord which moved him to work tirelessly for social reform, for the poor, for children enslaved in mines and factories, for better education and for the care of the mentally ill. Much has improved but there is much still to be done. Jesus warned us that in the last days wickedness would multiply and most men’s love would grow cold. As we celebrate St. Valentine let us give thanks that true love will always bring out the best in us, and rejoice in ‘Love Divine, all love’s excelling’.

HOLT WI The January meeting hosted by our new committee members and President Rita Gee, started with the members standing for a minutes silence to remember a staunch supporter and past Treasurer of Holt WI, Judy Westgate who had died on Christmas Day. Members contributed to a collection in her memory for the EVE Trust. Charles Lewis, a very competent and interesting speaker, gave us an illustrated talk about travelling by coach in Norfolk. Starting in the later part of the 1700s coach travel was well organised with a time table, ticket offices and a series of coaching inns which offered not only refreshments and accommodation but had horses, stables, farriers, blacksmiths and a livery service and so could be described as the first integrated transport system in our country. The main problem was the state of the roads, but gradually a toll system and turnpike roads were introduced. Some toll houses can still be seen today. One of the first turnpike roads ran from London to Chester as this is where people caught the boats to Ireland. The journey in 1657 covered the 195 miles in 5 days. 1681 saw the turnpike road from London to

CBT AT HOLT HOLISTIC ROOMSAneesh de Vos has joined the team at Holt Holistic Centre. She specialises in cognitive behaviour therapy to support people who are experiencing issues surrounding anxiety and trauma. CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) offers a psychoeducational approach for clients, supporting them to not only understand the origins of their fearful thinking; but also helps them to move forward. When a person feels empowered to change their belief systems to a more positive outlook, they can begin to take control of the effects of their anxiety. The essence of CBT is the belief that the way you think affects the way you feel. Within a session a client will be led to begin to identify and challenge outdated beliefs that no longer serve them. This is done by looking at a person’s negative automatic thoughts and the underlying assumptions and rules that drive them. Underneath this there will be a basis of core beliefs which are usually formed in our early years. Such as, ‘I am useless’ (core belief) the negative automatic thought to this could be ‘I always get it wrong’ driven by a rule of ‘If I am not perfect then everybody will know that I am a failure’. Aneesh has over twenty years of experience in the integrative health sector and feels strongly that therapy should be accessible for all. She has a commitment to ongoing study to expand her knowledge to support the clients she works with. At present Aneesh is studying a part time master’s course with the University of Nottingham in Trauma Studies. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching from the University of Warwick and an advance certificate in CBT. She holds a clinic on Tuesday evenings, each session lasting an hour. For more information please contact: [email protected] or 07794 866613.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PART OF SHERINGHAM CARNIVAL?

For the forthcoming Carnival Season, a vacancy has arisen for a volunteer to organise and manage the role of Chaperone to the Sheringham Royal Family. As you may be aware, this comprises the Carnival Queen and Two Attendants. The Carnival Prince and the Carnival Princess are chaperoned by their parents. Sheringham has had a Carnival Queen for 66 years so the role carries with it a great deal of tradition. Obviously, the role also carries a great deal of responsibility due to the potential ages of those in the Family. The role of Chaperone, covers many areas but focusses on organising and accompanying the Family during preparations and on official visits. In addition to Crowning Day, Sheringham Carnival Parade Day and Cromer Carnival Parade Day, these will include, for example, presentations and official appearances at some Carnival events and visits to various establishments such as care homes and other places within the community where they are always welcomed. Some dates outside of Carnival Week may also be included. All expenses will be covered.Being a Chaperone can be busy at times but is always a very rewarding role to fulfil. Full assistance and support will be given to the successful applicant as they learn about the role.If you are interested and would like to know more about the position, with no obligation, please email [email protected] and we will forward a more detailed specification regarding what is involved. We look forward to hearing from you.

Norwich completed but it was not until 1849 the toll road ran from Norwich to Fakenham. Modes of transport varied between privately owned coaches to the ‘Flying Coach’ (1754) service offering a journey time of 4½ days Manchester to London. 1784 saw the introduction of the ‘Mail Coach’, given priority at any toll gate. The staff had to keep detailed records of times taken for the journey. But the arrival of steam travel saw the very rapid decline of road travel. 1844/45 the Yarmouth and Norwich railway opened and, in January 1846, 500 coach horses were sold because the coach system had become redundant. The business of our meeting dealt with Federation events to celebrate their centenary, members voting for their favoured resolution, the collection of the annual fees and starting to plan next year’s programme. We meet again on 20th February at 2.00pm at Holt Community Centre to hear about the West Runton Elephant.

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGUsing Your Loaf!

I must confess to having fairly recently purchased a stand mixer, as I seem to be making so many cakes recently (oops!). What a difference it makes to the time spent in the kitchen, giving me even more time to experiment with recipes. This was one I devised for our recent Curry Night at the Community Centre, as I wanted a little taste of the East, whilst still having a traditional pud that everyone would enjoy. It’s a really easy recipe to do and rises beautifully in the loaf tin. Cardamom is a superb spice to use and a little goes a long way. Thankfully, it is possible to buy it ready ground, which makes controlling the strength a little easier. It’s also a great spice to use if you want to make Pilau rice, so its really handy to have on the shelf, and not expensive. As the cake cooks, the lovely flavour of the spice infuses throughout and sits beautifully with the orange, giving you a lovely, different and subtly flavoured pudding. I served it with a mandarin sauce, which you can make very easily by heating a tin of mandarins in juice, adding a little sugar, whizzing it up with a stick blender and thickening with a little corn flour mixed with cold water. Chill and serve with the cake as a pud with ice cream or cream. Alternatively, this is a beautiful cake in its own right, served alone, and a very good keeper.

Orange and Cardamom LoafFor cake:8 oz Self raising flour, sifted6 oz caster sugar6 oz butter/marg, at room temp1½ tsp baking powderGrated zest 1 large orangeTsp ground cardamom3 large eggs3 tblsp milkFor topping:Juice of the orangeCaster sugar to sprinklePut all of the cake ingredients into a large bowl or your stand mixer and beat until thoroughly combined. Pour into a lined and greased 2lb loaf tin and level with the back of a spoon. Put into your preheated oven on 180° for approx. 40-50 mins, until risen, golden and when a skewer is inserted, it comes out clean. Leave in the tin, and using a fine skewer, prick all over, and pour over the juice evenly whilst the cake is still hot, then dust with caster sugar.Turn out of the tin when cool enough to handle easily, and finish cooling on a wire rack. CURRY NIGHTat The Holt Community Centre

Huge thanks to all who attended our Curry Night in January, what a fantastic evening. We were treated to live music from Stefan on saxophone, who played superbly, serenading everyone as they arrived and through supper, completely changing the atmosphere of the Centre.Following an epic feast of 7 different curries, rice, salads and sides, and a cheeky little pudding, everyone settled into the quiz, with Quiz Masters Jonathon and Anthony putting us through our paces with a selection of questions which ranged from fiendishly tricky to the hilarious.A raffle completed the evening, with some lovely prizes that had been kindly donated to the Centre. All in all, the evening was a great success and gave us a chance to show what we could do with the facilities, to provide a fun, entertaining and affordable evening. This first evening was very much an experiment but was such a great night, and the feedback so encouraging, that many more are planned throughout the year, to help to raise money for the Centre and to get people in to enjoy what we have to offer. The Holt Community Centre was first opened in 1975 and is a registered charity, which exists to provide an affordable space for the benefit of the people of Holt. We are not funded by any other body and have to generate our own income to remain open for the residents of our town. Our rates of hire are highly competitive, to enable all who would like to hold a party the opportunity of doing so. We have a fully licensed and newly decorated bar/lounge area, as well as the huge hall, which, for any of you who have been to the many clubs that meet there, will know to be an amazing space to hire, with a stage area, very comfortable seating and even a state-of-the-art Cinema and surround sound speaker system. We are now thinking of ways in which we can further open up the centre to people and are very happy to discuss any ideas you may have regarding this. Perhaps you have an idea for a new club or group that you may be considering? Maybe you would like to help us to explore how we can use these facilities to the maximum advantage? Please do get in touch with us. Holt Community Centre exists as a charity for the benefit of people and we would love to welcome you on board as a volunteer at some of these fun evenings or in other ways. If you would like more information about the way you can be involved please do pop in to the Centre, call the office on 01263 713427 or call Carolyn Burn on 07789 220256.Carolyn Burn, Chairperson, Holt Community Centre

COMMON SCAMS - DON’T BE CAUGHT OUT!

Scams are schemes to con you out of your money. They can arrive by post, phone call, text message or email, or from someone coming to your home. Don’t be caught out! Some of the common scams include:Prize draws, sweepstakes and foreign lottery scams - You’re told that you’ve won a prize in a competition that you haven’t entered. To claim the prize you have to pay an administration fee. You pay the fee and either get back nothing or get something worth less than the fee you’ve paid.Miracle health cures - Miracle health cures or ‘scientific breakthroughs’ offer you health products to cure a problem such as arthritis, diabetes, or cancer, or to help you lose weight. The seller often promises a no-risk money-back guarantee or a free trial. There are often quotes from doctors and happy customers. These types of products and medicines are unlikely to do you much good, and might even harm you. Talk to your GP before you buy any of these products.Subscription traps - You see an online advert for a free trial of a product (these are often beauty or health related products like face creams or slimming pills). The advert may be on a reputable site, or

appear as a pop-up. You enter your card details to pay for postage and packaging, but end up being debited large amounts on a regular basis. You have unwittingly agreed to a ‘continuous payment authority’ (CPA), this is an agreement which authorises traders to take money from your account. You might not get your goods or they might not do what the advert claims.Property rentals - You rent a property and the landlord asks for a deposit of a month’s rent before checking your references. You sign a contract saying that if the references aren’t satisfactory, your deposit will be paid back, minus a fee for checking the references. Your landlord then tells you your references are unsatisfactory, even though you know they’re fine. The landlord then refuses to return all the deposit.Pyramid selling and chain gift schemes - You go to a presentation and are told that after paying a joining fee, you can earn lots of money recruiting others to the scheme. This is pyramid selling which is illegal. You are unlikely to make any money.Working from home - You see an advertisement offering work which you can do at home, for example, stuffing envelopes or putting together home assembly kits. You’re asked to pay a fee upfront and then find there’s no work on offer, you only get paid if you get others to sign up, or you do the work and don’t get paid for it. For example, you assemble a kit and are told the work isn’t up to standard and you won’t be paid.A genuine home-working scheme won’t ask you to pay money upfront and will explain in writing what you are expected to do, how much you will earn, and when you will be paid. You should also be paid at least the national minimum wage.

Your legal mattersin safe handsHayes + Storr Solicitors handle a wholerange of family, property and businesslegal matters with care and professionalism.

Break-up without breaking downRob Colwell, Director and Head of Family Services, Hayes + Storr

The frequency of separations at this time of year are well documented - family lawyers are inundated with new enquires between New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Getting a divorce can have a major impact on your mental health, and an acrimonious or one sided break-up can result in serious consequences. Some will seek retribution, others won’t accept it, and some will find it difficult to imagine a future without their spouse.Being mindful of a client’s mental well-being whilst ensuring we achieve the best possible results can be a careful balancing act. Our aim is to deliver an outcome which causes the least amount of distress in what is already a traumatic situation. The end of a relationship can be

devastating, and no matter who ended it or when, life can feel empty and frightening - but life does continue and many people go on to live happy, fulfilled lives after divorce. That’s why we keep our clients focused on the future, encouraging them to avoid negative emotions and think practically about the potential outcomes. The lawyers in the Family Services department at Hayes + Storr are members of Resolution, a national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. Our team is guided by Resolution’s conciliatory and person-centred approach, including:

• Helping clients focus on what’s important in the long-term• Balancing financial and emotional costs with what the client wants to achieve• Working with others to find the right approach and the best solutions• Managing stress in what can sometimes be a very stressful situationNot only does this practical approach facilitate our clients’ ability to cope, it also ensures costs are kept as low as possible, avoiding entrenched arguments that have no resolve. Our goal is to help clients adapt to their new situation and look for alternative solutions to court proceedings, avoiding unnecessary stress, costs and delays. If you’re concerned about yourself or anyone else going through divorce or separation, we recommend visiting the Relate website at www.relate.org.uk for lots of helpful resources, and don’t forget you can call the Samaritans free of charge at any time on 116123. They offer 24/7 support every single day of the year and you don’t have to be suicidal to get in touch. You can also get a referral from your GP for free counselling sessions on the NHS. A break-up can be hard to manage, so speaking with health professionals to develop coping strategies can be very helpful. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Rob on 01328 863231. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01263 712835 or email [email protected].

Norfolk, but eventually came back to live here when her husband took early retirement in 1991. She was determined to live here as she liked the feel of it and its nearness to the coast. Her ancestors were all connected with agriculture, farmers, corn merchants, butchers, with a family history which can be traced back to the 14th century. Her education was very varied: a village school; on a farm with 4 other children and a governess; boarding school for 3 years in Cromer and then school in Warwickshire.Bridget qualified as a State Registered Dietitian and she worked in various NHS hospitals and also lectured. She has always known Holt, from before the bypass, and has been involved in lots of things in Holt and in the county. She has always been involved in Health Issues and was a Non-Exec-Director of the North Norfolk Primary Care Trust; Norwich District Community Health Council; and many other health related things. She has been a WI member in Holt since 1991 and President twice, having been a member for over 50 years. She has been a volunteer for the Holt Festival since it started and when a Rep. Theatre company was based at The Auden for 3 years she was very involved. The Arts and theatre/film are great loves of hers. She doesn’t like house work and doesn’t have the time for it either!Booking for these sessions is advisable on 01263 712202. The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. Recordings of past sessions can be found at www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt

WEYBOURNE FOLK CLUB10 YEARS OLD

Weybourne Folk Club reaches the grand old age of 10 years on Sunday 17th February 2019.We first met at the Ship Inn,Weybourne in February 2010. Just a few like-minded individuals gathered once a month on the 3rd Sunday afternoon to sing and play music in the Folk tradition. We met there for three years then moved to the Maltings Hotel where we have been made very welcome by Andy and Ross who have provided us with an excellent private room suitable for our purpose. Entrance has always been free. We usually get a crowd of 40/50 people of which 25 or so will be singers, musicians, dancers or poets of various abilities. Audience are also welcome and it’s not unusual to have listeners progress to performers after settling in with us for a while. We appreciate all types of music/song in the Folk style eg traditional, blues, contemporary, americana and music hall. Some have started to write songs of their own which we hope will help to ensure continuation of this class of folk culture. The popularity of the club led us to attempt an annual weekend of Folk to include music, dance and song also a Ceilidh/Barn dance. The weekend has gone from strength to strength. This year will be our 9th and will be held at the Village Hall on 2nd, 3rd and 4th August. Some of the guests on this occasion will be Rattlebox, a very lively folk group from Corpusty, Kevin Dempsey, an extremely talented guitarist/singer and Julie Felix singer/guitarist originally from America who was on television many times in the early days of the Folk revival. We meet on the 3rd Sunday every month at the Maltings Hotel from 3.00pm until 6.00pm. Further details can be obtained from Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or [email protected].

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILTHE PERFECTED AND THE HOLY

In the letter to the Hebrews it is written, ‘‘For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” (10:14). Jesus is only a fictional messiah whom the Christian Church pretends has made an offering to make men perfect and sanctified (holy). In the Dead Sea Scroll called The Community Rule (IQS) column VIII below we learn the truth, the men of the community were themselves the offering, (not the fictional Jesus) an offering that made them perfect and holy.“It shall be a House of Perfection and Truth in Israel that they may establish a Covenant according to the everlasting precepts. And they shall be an agreeable offering, atoning for the Land and determining the judgement of wickedness, and there shall be no more iniquity. When they have been confirmed for two years in perfection of way in the Foundation of the Community, they shall be set apart as holy within the Council of the men of the Community”. Here is the true resurrection! The Dead Sea Scrolls in English is published by Penguin Books. For more secrets see our book the SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL written by Maurice Gray, available from Crystal Moon Cavern,1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practise and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

ENJOY A DAY’S SINGING AND RAISE FUNDS FOR

TAPPING HOUSE HOSPICE!Fakenham Choral Society Come & Sing Day

Saturday 16th FebruaryFakenham Choral Society is hosting a Come & Sing Day on Saturday 16th February in Fakenham Academy. The day is aimed at encouraging all singers, whether you sing regularly or have not sung for a while, to come along and have fun singing and learning together. Fakenham Academy has plenty of free parking and a large hall. The Come & Sing Day as well as raising funds for Fakenham Choral Society also aims to raise funds for Tapping House Hospice with singers’ donations, a raffle on the day and audience donations all going to the hospice. The day will be lead by FCS’s new musical director Mark Jones, who as a former head of Music at Gresham’s school and of Gresham’s Choral Society, will be a familiar face to many in North Norfolk. During the day the choir will be learning and performing John Rutter’s exuberant cycle of spirituals, ‘Feel the Spirit’. Set for choir and mezzo soprano soloist, the cycle includes familiar spirituals such as ‘Steal Away’, ‘Deep River’ and finishes with a wonderfully uplifting version of ‘When the Saints go Marching in’. There will be morning and afternoon workshops and then a performance at 5.00pm when we invite an audience to come along and hear the culmination of our day’s work. The performance, which lasts about 45 minutes, is free but the audience is invited to give a donation to Tapping House Hospice. The choir will be accompanied by mezzo soprano soloist Rosamund Walton and a small band of instrumentalists to give the right atmosphere to this delightful work. So brighten up a dull winter’s day and release your musical spirit! Come & Sing or Come & Listen but please come along and help raise funds for Tapping House Hospice.Singers should register by Monday 11th February. For more about the day and registration forms go to www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org or contact Rosemary Dear 01328 851776 or on [email protected].

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THERAPEUTIC RIDING IN NORTH NORFOLK

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is pleased to announce the setting up of two new RDA Groups covering the wider North Norfolk Area.At RDA, our horses and ponies provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. Our network of 500 volunteer groups organise activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting and showjumping to over 25,000 people each year. Now riders in the North Norfolk area will have the opportunity to choose between two newly created groups.Norfolk Coast RDA is based at North Norfolk Riding Centre, Walsingham and Worstead and District RDA rides at Squirrelwood Equestrian Centre, Hall Farm, Worstead.Peter Tobitt, Norfolk County Chairman for RDA commented: “It is so exciting to see the expansion of riding opportunities in this geographical area. The two new Groups are run by trustee boards and volunteers with a wealth of experience who are looking to expand the possibilities for their riders. I am confident that each Group is now ideally placed to achieve this and help even more riders achieve their goals.”Previously the whole area was served by one group, North Norfolk RDA, which operated very successfully for 43 years from a number of riding stables, most recently Squirrelwood at Weybourne. Adult and child riders came from various special needs schools and care facilities as well as on a private basis. Now the same trustees and experienced volunteers who ran North Norfolk RDA have taken the positive step to turn one group into two – enabling them to support a much wider area. Existing riders have already been accommodated at the new groups, which are also seeking new riders. Each RDA Group is entirely staffed by unpaid volunteers and they hope to recruit more volunteers to help with this very rewarding equine therapy which benefits the riders so much in so many ways. For further information about riding or volunteering with either of these groups, please use the contacts below:

FLY-TIPPING OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE RESULTS IN A BILL OF £1,557North Norfolk District Council brings successful prosecution over dumped rubbish

A Norfolk resident has been ordered to pay more than £1,500 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to fly-tipping.Shane Bocking, of Sedgeford Road, Snettisham, had left household rubbish, including bin bags, in an open, green space in Wells Road, Hindringham. He was taken to court by North Norfolk District Council for the offence, which was committed on or before 4th January. On 24th January, Norwich Magistrates’ Court fined Bocking £100.00 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £1,327.58, clean-up costs of £100.00 and a victim surcharge of £30.00, a total of £1,557.58.Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “Fly-tipping simply will not and cannot be tolerated and I am delighted to see another successful prosecution that shows that we will continue to tackle this issue and take action against those who choose to blight the

district in this way.People seem to think they can get away with dumping waste, without a second thought to the effect it has on the environment, and that is exactly why we will continue to prosecute those who we have evidence against that commit this crime.”The case was brought ahead of this week’s launch of a Norfolk-wide anti-fly-tipping campaign, SCRAP. The campaign is being backed by local authorities across the county, as well as by the police, the Environment Agency, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the Country Land and Business Association (CLA).

KELLING PROBUS CLUB The chairman welcomed 14 members, together with Terry Cutler, guest of Tom Henshaw and Peter Wenham as our guest speaker. Peter Wenham, Chairman of Trustees, informed members about the purpose and activity of the Cromer and District Food Bank.Peter was only 14 when he left school to train as a junior electrical engineer. His work took him to Scotland Yard and to British Aerospace, where as Plant Engineer, he supported the production of guided missiles. Later he joined local authorities as Director of Commercial Services, before finishing his career as a self employed Consultant. When he moved to Cromer 10 years ago his initial intention was to work with young people on the streets, but quickly discovered that this was a rather less pressing problem in North Norfolk than it had been in Hertfordshire. He then turned his attention to the requirements of the homeless, working in Norwich with the Salvation Army and then with the local Cromer Food Bank. Foodbanks first appeared in Salisbury in 2000, but now there are more than four hundred such Foodbanks, with twelve hundred outlets, all associated with the Trussell Trust. Foodbanks exist to help people with real crises in their lives. Fourteen million people in the UK live below the poverty line, suffering acute food shortages due to redundancy, bereavement, benefit changes and delays, relationship breakdown and low pay. Recipients of food require valid vouchers obtained from such agencies as Churches, Housing Departments, Social services and the CAB. Food banks are not judgemental or discriminating but do take steps to prevent misuse. The service is administered from Cromer Methodist Church and has outlets in Sheringham, Holt, Stalham, North Walsham and AylshamThe public donated 36.5 tonnes of food in 2017/18, assisting nearly four thousand people, including twelve hundred children. Demand for help from Foodbank is increasing year on year and shows no signs of reducing. Peter described many heartbreaking stories that underlie the need for support and explained the reticence and embarrassment, experienced by those forced to use Foodbanks. Foodbank also has the ability to assist with energy bills and Signposting Clients to other vital services.Peter reported that currently the greatest need is for financial support for the food bank, which has a turnover of almost sixty thousand pounds a year, the finance is necessary to cover operational costs, including Project Managers salary, rent and utilities at the church and also essential transport. The day to day work is undertaken by over 100 volunteers, and anyone who feels that they may be able to help may contact Foodbank on 07826 376343.The Chairman proposed a vote of thanks and congratulated Peter on his most interesting and thought provoking presentation. The next meeting will be on Thursday 15th February at the Dales Hotel. The speaker will be Chris Bell of Weather Quest.

FUN AND ADVENTURE WITH BLAKENEY ROWING CLUB

The rowing season continues, despite the variations in weather, with Bluejacket in full use for several outings during the week. The waters around Barton Broad have been well explored by ‘Crabbers’ who are keen to have an active beginning to 2019. See crablakeney.wordpress.com for some pictures of rowers in action or enjoying a brief but deserved break. At the time of writing, Hoi Larntan, the club’s other skiff, is being refitted at Bayfield Brecks before it changes places with Bluejacket. Many thanks to all the club members who have worked so hard at making Hoi Larntan look even more beautiful. On Friday 11th January, a group of skiff rowers from Woodbridge visited Barton Turf to row with members of your local rowing club.

The visitors’ purpose, apart from enjoyment, was to pick up some design points for the building of their own skiff which they hope to have on

the water by April 2019. It was a great day which included a row, a pub lunch and an appreciative look at trailers and the workshop. It’s always a pleasure to meet members of other rowing clubs and we look forward to seeing the Woodbridge skiff on the water. Well done to all who took part in a very sociable event. The forthcoming competitive season promises to be as full as ever. Events on the schedule include the King’s Lynn Hansa Rowing Festival at which Blakeney will defend six trophies, the Great River Race on the Thames, the local regattas, several races in Essex and the Carrow Cup event in Norwich. On the expedition front, a club group will row in Brittany at La Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan between 27th May and 2nd June 2019. This promises to be a fascinating experience!Come along and try rowing for yourselves. No previous experience is needed, just a taste for adventure and fun. You don’t have to take part in any of the race events. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join and coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in experiencing the sheer enjoyment of rowing, contact Tom on 01263 761570. Hope to see you on the water soon.Barry Howes

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

It was a dark and rainy night as I hitchhiked down a country lane, so I was delighted when a car drew level and stopped. Without hesitating, I jumped in and closed the door.As the vehicle moved slowly off, I realised there was no one behind the wheel and that I was alone. What’s more, the engine wasn’t running. Terrified, I remained rooted to the seat until the lights of a pub came into view. I dived out and ran.Once inside the pub, I was regaling my fellow customers with the spooky experience until about ten minutes later when two men came in, out of breath and wet through. Looking round, one of them saw me, nudged his friend and said “Look, Tom. There’s that idiot who got into the car while we were pushing it.”My wife was attending an all-day job fair, so I was surprised when the phone rang and I heard her weary voice.“Everything all right?” I asked.“Yeah,” she said, “I just wanted to talk to someone I didn’t have to be nice to.”I had arranged to take my mother-in-law to the doctor, but when I arrived at her ground-floor flat, she was chatting to a neighbour through an open window. With some urgency, I reminded her of the appointment time and, after further cajoling, she eventually followed me to the car.As I settled her in, she said, “Oh, dear, sorry about that. I hope we won’t be late. You know, that woman just wouldn’t stop listening to me.”When I was a military intelligence, an infantryman teased me about my job. “You lot don’t even have to take any kind of physical training test,” he said.“That’s nonsense. We take one twice a year.”“Yeah?” he said, “Well, we take one every six months.”My primary school teacher cousin asked her class, “Why should you never accept sweets from strangers?”“Because they might be past their sell-by date?” suggested a little girl.

BUILDERS

NORFOLK LIFEThe Norfolk Lurcher by Richard Shepheard

Many a dog has crept into a book, but few can have crept out of one as the lurcher did from the iconic book ‘I walked by Night’ the story of the self-styled King of the Norfolk Poachers (1935). Edited by Lilias Rider-Haggard, illustrated by Edward Seago, it is the narrative of a fly-by-night whose name was later established as Frederick Rolfe. Thousands of lurchers must have been bred as a result of the perceived romance in the life of this reprobate. One of the tools of the poacher’s craft was the lurcher. Rolfe calls this the Norfolk (or Smithfield) lurcher and says that it was a cross between the Smithfield cattle dog (to give it ‘sagacity’) and the greyhound which gave it speed. The poacher would set his long net downwind from where hares and rabbits were feeding, the dog would do a circuitous outrun and then quarter back towards the net driving the rabbits toward the net where the master would dispatch the coneys as opportunity demanded. The Smithfield collie was a drover’s dog and, when droving fell by the wayside, that particular herding dog became extinct. Rolfe’s book never died, however, and reading it as a child I became fascinated by the identity of the Norfolk lurcher of his story. The project was to have the happiest of conclusions a few years ago.I was gazing through a collection of photographs at St Andrews Church, Northwold when I came across one of John Curry warrener of nearby Foulden taken around 1900.* There, in a trap, dickey (donkey) in shafts, sat the stout John Curry, right-arm over his ferret box. A ‘spud’ (rabbiting spade) protruded from the rear of the cart and a long net was folded casually from it. In front of the cart stood his dog which had the stamp of the ‘Norfolk lurcher’ all over it.The picture came home and is on a wall in my cottage. Six feet away, on another wall, is one of Frederick Fuller, local game dealer of Northwold who must have known John Curry. Frederick Fuller was my great-grandfather, and I am pleased to see these contemporaries of Frederick Rolfe in such close proximity on my cottage wall.An excellent biography of Frederick Rolfe entitled ‘The King of the Norfolk Poachers: His Life and Times’ was written by Charlotte Paton and published in 2009. It shows that if truth is not exactly stranger than fiction it is certainly grimmer! I am glad there was a full half century between my reading Rolfe’s work and that of his biographer!*The collection of photographs was the property of Dr. C.G. Goymour of Buntingford, Herts, whose maternal forebears included the Bovills of Northwold, a family of commerce, including photography, in the village.

A LOST WORLDMemories of Briston and Melton Constable

Don’t mention the war! by Leslie KinsleyI was 14 when the Second World War began and had been at work on the farm for about a year.Together with some of my friends, I lied about my age in order to join the Home Guard. Most of us were teenagers but the men in charge were much older. They included a man with a wooden leg, a local seed merchant and my Dad (who had fought in the first war). My Dad was a corporal but we did not obey his orders very well and I used to catch it for that when I got home!We were issued with guns and some ammunition. The bullets all had to be accounted for, but we really wanted them to go after pheasants. The seed merchant had a lorry and as our officer he used to take us over to Holkham for training. We had to go through dykes full of water there which we hated. However, we found spare bullet cases lying around there which we collected. Then we were issued with more bullets!Every week we had to patrol overnight and guard the village from invaders. As we had worked a full day and had to work next day we used to sneak off to a nearby barn and have a sleep. Unfortunately we got caught at this and, in order to keep us awake, we were made to go over to Hindolveston during the night and sign in a book kept by the local policeman. We still got up to mischief though as we were using the Pavillion on Briston recreation ground.A farmer kept his cattle on there overnight and one of the cows was really good tempered. She would stand for us while we milked her and then we would heat the milk in an old copper in the Pavillion.

WEYBOURNE GOODCOMPANIONS

On Wednesday, 23rd January, fifteen members of Weybourne Good Companions Club met at the village hall and enjoyed a fun quiz, which had been compiled by friend of the club, Duncan. Our brain cells were tested on a variety of subjects, including events which had taken place in 2018, true or false facts and picture clues showing vari-ous dog breeds. The winning team were ‘The Cordwainers’, with the others following close behind. The afternoon concluded with refresh-ments and a raffle. Sandy Bailey thanked Duncan and his assistant for entertaining us all. The Good Companions Club meet at 2.30pm in Weybourne Village Hall on the fourth Wednesday of each month and enjoy a variety of speakers and other forms of entertainment. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 27th February, when we shall be celebrating our 22nd birthday party and local singer Gordon will provide the entertainment. Entry £2.50, which includes refreshments. All welcome!

THEN THE FIGHT STARTED....Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage.I hooked the boat up to the truck and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.I went back into the house, quietly undressed and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”My loving wife of ten years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”And then the fight started......
