Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day (Proper 11)Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Havecompassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for ourblindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you andthe Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lessons The First Reading: Genesis 18:1-10a

CommentaryWhen God first spoke to Abraham, telling him to leave his homeland and journey to an unknown place, the call camewith a promise of descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. However, many years passed and Abraham's wife,Sarah, remained barren, so Abraham and Sarah decided God's plan needed their help. Abraham slept with Sarah'smaid, Hagar, and from this union Ishmael was born, but Ishmael was not the child through whom God's promiseswould be extended. Now, when Abraham and Sarah have left child-bearing years far behind, God will present themwith a biological son, Isaac. Much of the Old Testament prepares us for God's revelation in the New Testament; themiraculous birth of Isaac foreshadows an even greater miracle, the birth of Jesus Christ. The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. Helooked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, andbowed down to the ground. He said, "My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little waterbe brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refreshyourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said."And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it,and make cakes." Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastenedto prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood bythem under the tree while they ate. They said to him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" And he said, "There, in the tent." Thenone said, "I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son."The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon The Rev. Paula Griffin

The Nicene Creed 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Lightfrom Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things weremade. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnatefrom the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death andwas buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seatedat the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom willhave no end.

St. James Mission StatementTo invite all people to know and receive the infinitegrace of God in Christ, and together grow in love of

God and neighbor through service, worship, and study.

St. James Vision StatementOur vision is for St. James Parish to be a committed, loving, supportive parish family that provides oppor-

tunity, encouragement and nourishment for all toknow Christ and make Him known.

The Epistle: Colossians 1:15-28CommentaryIn Colossians, Paul stressed the supremacy of Jesus Christ, and in these verses he listed ways in which Christ issupreme. Paul described Jesus' superiority in relation to deity, creation and the church. The ultimate purpose for Jesus'life, death and resurrection was the reconciliation of all things to God, and the cross of Christ made reconciliation pos-sible. Paul referred to the mystery that was now revealed: Gentiles could be fellow heirs of salvation with Jews, unitedin and to Christ by faith in His superior, redeeming work.Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earthwere created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been cre-ated through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of thebody, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in every-thing. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himselfall things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were onceestranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to pres-ent you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him—provided that you continue securely established and stead-fast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed toevery creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. Ibecame its servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To themGod chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ inyou, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that wemay present everyone mature in Christ. The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

THE

GRAPEVINEST. JAMES PARISH • WILMINGTON, NC

WEEK OF JULY 17, 2016

NO SUMMER VACATION FOR CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY.Over the past six weeks, my family and I have experienced a warm welcome and incredible hospitality from St. James Parish. Our transition from seminary and the busy life of Northern Virginia has gone smoothly because

people have gone out of their way to ensure that we were welcomed both in our new home and during services at Lebanon Chapel and the Downtown Parish campus. On behalf of my family, I would like to thank St. James for welcoming us into the parish community and Wilmington. We feel incredibly blessed and grateful to be here and look forward to the ministries that God has in store for us!

In the midst of unpacking boxes, finding our way around Wilmington, and adjusting to the coastal heat and humidity, I have witnessed Christian hospitality when a new person enters a new community. Hospitality is not something new to the Christian faith because it has been around since the Old Testament and occurred throughout the New Testament, especially when Martha welcomed Jesus into her home in our Gospel lesson on July 17. Jesus never asked for hospitality but he received it unconditionally and with an open heart. We can learn a lot not only from Martha’s hospitality but the way in which Jesus embraced her welcome without question and allowed her to take care of him.

We can welcome others in the name of Christ, but also allow others to welcome and take care of us. I know this is a difficult thing to do since it is easier to take care of others rather than allowing others to care for us. (If you want proof of this, just ask my wife, Whitney, about taking care of me when I have been sick). Jesus did not need to let Martha

welcome and take care of him, but he did it anyway. Later, Jesus showed Martha and all of creation how much he cared for us by dying on the cross. I believe that God is challenging us to let others care for us because hospitality is a two-way street that involves giving and receiving in all situations that we encounter in our lives.

What makes Christian hospitality unique is that it never stops. It never rests. It never calls in sick. It is interwoven into our lives and faith no matter where we go and what we do. We demonstrate hospitality

in our homes when guests come over for dinner. We show hospitality to our co-workers and colleagues when we help them with work. Even when we go to the grocery store, we can show hospitality by smiling at complete strangers and store employees. Christian hospitality is a part of our lives even when we do not realize it. It is a gift from God that we carry with us!

Hospitality and welcoming others occurs all year long. No matter what season we are in, no matter where we go, or what we are doing, we demonstrate God’s love to others by welcoming and embracing others. As we continue our various journeys during these long hot days, remember that Christian hospitality never takes a summer vacation.

“As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus

entered a village where a woman named Martha

welcomed him into her home.” (Luke 10:38)

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS UPDATESt. James Parish would like to announce that we are partnering with Advanced Youth Outreach to provide space in the Lee Parish Hall multi-purpose room for their six week basketball clinic for middle school age youth. The youth will be coming to St. James on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM beginning July 12, after they finish with a mentorship and tutoring program in English and Math each day. The program is designed to provide middle school age children a place to go for academics, counseling and some fun in the form of a basketball clinic, skills camp in the multi-purpose room. The Advanced Youth Outreach program is run by community leader Vance Williams and is located at 1310 Dock St.

ST. ANNE’S CRUCIFER PICTURE PROJECTThe restoration of the crucifer pictures hanging in the Great Hall began last fall when parishioners sharing Sunday breakfast began to notice the extent of damage evident in our historical pictures. Dating back to 1908, these pictures have suffered from moisture, fading and scratched frames whenever they had been stacked. Janet Ward (St. Anne’s president) together with her husband Everett, investigated what could be done. St. Anne’s voted to undertake the project with an initial $400.00 commitment.

Our rector and the vestry were impressed enough by the first restored prototype to commit the funds necessary to restore 80 of the 93 pictures in need of repair. Each picture received attention to the frame, acid-free backing and digital remastering when necessary to restore lost images. When replaced, the originals become part of the St. James archive at UNCW along with a CD of all our acolyte pictures, including all Christmas pictures taken since 1999. The total cost of this project ($1286.08) was reduced through the generous donation of time and equipment by Warren Tucker of The Frame Outlet, as well as the hard work in disassembling the frames and cleaning the glass by the Wards. St. Anne’s is thankful to have become a part of this aspect of St. James’ commitment to honor our past and preserve our future.

ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN

Are you seeking to deepen and grow your faith? Education for Ministry just celebrated its 40th anniversary and uses a

curriculum designed by the University of the South - Sewanee. Trained mentors facilitate the EfM small seminar groups. EfM

helps participants develop the skills and insights to understand their lives through a theological lens that can shape their

actions and ministry. EfM participants commit to one year at a time, and the full curriculum is covered over four years.

“My four years of EfM have significantly contributed to my spiritual growth, enhanced my theological understandings, and enriched my life with wonderful classmates in a supportive learning community. EfM is highly recommended!

“EfM has allowed me to get to know the scriptures, our faith, and my fellow parishioners---my friends---so much better than I ever expected; it's quickly become a highlight of my week.”

“EFM has made me aware of the Holy Spirit working within me to help me understand the significance of Scripture and how to have a true relationship with God.”

SIGN UP NOW FOR ADVENT MEDITATIONS:St. James is planning a series of Advent meditations

based on the book of Isaiah, which is the source of this year’s Old Testament daily lectionary readings.

Here’s how you can be part of this project:

1. Visit stjamesp.org and navigate to "Advent Meditations Sign Up" in the navigation bar. Choose an available

passage. First come, first served for sign ups. Please only sign up for one day. We want as many voices as possible.

2. Use the passage as your inspiration to write a brief (not more than 300 words) meditation or reflection based on what that passage says to you. This isn’t about what you

should/ought to do (ex: God is gracious so you should be gracious, too). It’s about exploring how the passage

intersects with your life (ex: how have I seen God’s grace in my life and what difference has it made?)

3. Please know that clergy and communications staff will edit as needed. We will consult with authors about any

edits.

As a parish family, we have the opportunity to explore together the many ways in which we can enrich this season of expectation, so choose a passage and start

thinking Advent!

ALASKA WILDERNESS MISSION EXPERIENCE 2016JULY 6 – 16, 2016

On July 6, twelve people loaded their luggage and began their journey towards Alaska. This is our 6th year of working with the parishioners of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Wasilla, Alaska and we have some amazing work to do! We will be building an addition to the Church, splitting firewood for the large homeless population and helping a woman whose husband died of cancer. We will also be learning about the history and heritage of Alaska, “The Last Frontier.” We will travel to Kantishna in Denali National Park, explore Talkeetna (the outpost for Denali Mountain Climbers), cruise to the Surprise Glacier near Whittier and work with 27 Iditarod Siberian Huskies learning about dog sledding and the history of the Iditarod. We will worship next to rivers, on glaciers, under the “midnight sun,” as well as with the parishioners of St David’s. Please pray for us while we are in Alaska, for the work that will be done and for God’s Healing and Loving Presence in our lives. Thank you, St. James, for your loving support and for your prayers!
